Forza Horizon’s Ralph Fulton Talks Speed, Style and Redefining the Genre
Written Thursday, September 20, 2012 By Dan Webb

For years racing games have been pigeonholed as either arcade racers or simulation racers, an out-dated view, according to Playground Games’ Design Director, Ralph Fulton. Why is it out-dated, you ask? Because the line has been blurred… that, and Forza Horizon is what they’re calling an “action” racer.

You heard right.

We chat to Fulton about Forza Horizon’s festival-based structure, the game’s unique showcase events, whether the limited fast travel may hold back the game from greatness and, of course, we ask the burning question: what the chuffin’ 'ell is “action racing”?

If you’ve not checked out our recent hands-on with the title either, then do so as we explore whether it has what it takes to be 2012’s supreme racer.

Forza Horizon is scheduled for an October 26th and October 29th in North America and Europe respectively.

This game is looking to be amazing but after reading Webb's piece i am concerned about the possibility of some form of rubberbanding AI. Also, i like how he somewhat avoided the question about fast travel, i can see the achievement whores complaining about this:)

this will not live up to peoples very high expectations. It will fall somewhere in between TDU and NFS/Burnout and that pains me to say it. I'm a huge Forza fan but this is still not going to be the game we racers/car lovers are after. We thought we might be getting it in TDU2 but sadly that game was a massive POS. I don't like how they promised so much but now going back on their original statements. Its now gone from "Open World" to "Open Road" and really their tag of arcade racer really is getting tiring. I'll still purchase it but for me the hype is just far to great. We will be waiting till the next gen machines before we see a true open world, massive map, free to go anywhere type TDU game and I can't wait. This will be just a filler. Just wait for Forza Horizons 2 on next gen, I can see it already :)

I will get a chance to play this tomorrow at the Brit Car 24hr race at Silverstone. Look forward to seeing whether it can compete with NFS Most Wanted.

On a technical note, can you guys talk this loud for all of your interviews? There have been more than a few interviews (mainly at large conventions like E3) where I can barely hear Dan or the interviewer even with my volume settings all of the way up.

@9 - In some cases, the ad is longer than the video. Sold to the highest bidder. Wonder if they should change the .org to a .com?

This video was terrible. I was extremely excited to play this game. The graphics are horrendous and the detail in the cars look nothing compared to Forza 4. This just looks like it's going to be another crappy NFS wannabe.
