New Multiplayer Mode Coming to Gears of War: Judgment

People Can Fly and Epic Games have cooked up a new multiplayer mode for next year’s Gears of War: Judgment.

The upcoming prequel will feature something called “Free for All” mode, which sounds like boring old Deathmatch but could prove to be a little more interesting.

In a teaser for the publication’s next issue, OXM US described the new mode by saying, “Judgment aims to blur the line between friend and foe when the new match type debuts next year.”

A full reveal of the mode is promised in the mag's next cover story, with the first image shown as a tease on the website. We’ve popped it below.

So what could “Free for All” mode be? OXM wouldn’t put a Deathmatch reveal on the front cover, would it? Fingers crossed for something a little more inventive.

Gears of War: Judgment is out on March 19th, 2013

  • There's gotta be something more to this. Random spawning weapons, maybe?
  • The GOW games have never really done a "standard" multiplayer mode really, they've always given the MP game modes their own little tweaks and such. I'd be very surprised if this is just a bog standard free for all game mode. The flip side of that is that I cant really think of too many ways you can tweak a FFA game to make it that much different that it stands out from the crowd. Be interested to see what they've come up with.
  • I can't think that they would put something as mundane as Deathmatch as a cover story. If it turns out to be just that or just a pre-existing game mode tweaked for free-for-all play, I'll be sorely disappointed.
  • I see COG on COG action, which would be cool because the COG characters are much more fun to play as in comparison to locust who lack the COG personality.
  • Too bad it's not really coming out in March. That's what they said about Gears 3, too.
  • I have a bad feeling about this gears of war...
  • FUCK YES!!!!, finally a FFA mode
  • Most likely solo Wingman. But hey, at least now there's the "true" mercenary mode! @ 6 Don't we all? I mean, Seriously?
  • Great a mode to encourage camping. Just what's needed.
  • Agree with #10. I never could recover from the disappointment of GOW2. It tainted 3 as well.
  • @10 you'll buy this, don't lie lolol
  • Hmmm i much prefer co-op to vs modes, But will be picking this up none the less.
  • i really hope they drop the weapon damage back to how it was on gears 1 as the damage on gears 3 on items like grenades for example was ridiculous
  • ... Maybe it will be deathmatch combined with horde mode..
  • @14 Damage is fine, is the range of some weapons they need to fix, like grenades, sometimes your opponents can be swatting right over your grenade and touching it with their anus, and boom, no kill, yet when someone lobs one right at you while you're already running towards them, AND YOU STILL do an entire roll forward to evade it and STILL end up in pieces, that's when I usually reach for the off switch... I always thought FFA mode was missing from Gears, but then again, as usual in Gears, whoever has the better connection will just dominate the whole match anyway, so expect one person to do great, and everyone else to be fighting for 2nd place.
  • “Judgment aims to blur the line between friend and foe when the new match type debuts next year.” Obviously this isn't a plain old Deathmatch mode, if it says it aims to blur the line between friend and foe. Everyone is a foe in a deathmatch game mode. So my money is on it being a Team Deathmatch mode where, players can turn on one another for whatever reason. Or it could just be a plain old DM mode that allows you to join with friends in your party. The whole blurring the line thing may refer to the fact that you can work together with your friends but ultimately there can only be one winner so you will have to turn on each other eventually.
  • I got a really off-the-wall one: a mixed-mode. Like, it's all deathmatch-y, but you still have "teams," except now you can have COG and Locust forces fighting together. I know that technically Free-For-All usually denotes every man for himself, but what if the "free" is actually the freedom to mix and match teams? THAT would be mind-blowing.
  • My idea for a Deathmatch in GOW. Wingman meets Deathmatch meets Gears 3 version of TDM. 5 teams of 2 face off. But only one player can be deemed the winner. Friendly Fire is active the entire time, allowing for betrayals at any point during the match. Give each player only one life per round, whoever has the most kills at the end of 3 rounds wins the match. If any player betrays his/her teammate during a round then at the start of the next round the teams are mixed up and those players are branded as traitors to their new teammates. Its up to them to work together or not.
  • wonder if this means..as a whole....the maps for Judgment will be different than the usual "mirrored image, run the the power weapon and control the match" map design or maybe just for this game type at least. Too much "symmetry" on gears maps. makes things get old. prefer variation and randomness within a specific map.
  • For me Gears died after GOW2. GOW3 felt rushed and boring, I feel no hype for this one so far.
  • I can happily watch the Judgment campaign on YouTube, as I will with Black Ops 2. I'm not buying another Gears game that seems like it's hardly been in development compared to the others. Judgment just looks like Gears 3.5, but set in the past.
  • Gears never needed a ff to start with . This is just a coo to try make it more appealing this game clearly is being made to make quick cash. Microsoft typically
  • I just wanna know 1 thing before I buy this game. Will there be permanent Dedicated Servers? If so, day 1 purchase.
  • As someone mentioned before, for me the Gears Of War franchise died realy with GOW 2 and the way they wanted to addept the Halo way of matchmaking, wasn,t it a blast to start a match and pick your favorite map and everyone that liked this map to could join? Well i did and lots of others to. Not to mention the fact that back then everyone actualy used headsets and actualy talked, nowadays its ruined by pppl being in party chats or some kids yelling and trashtalking the living crap out of every MP they come across, it realy ruined my MP experince. I,m def in for more GOW don,t get me wrong, but after i played all 3 parts of GOW, from the story it just never get me anymore as it did in part one. Now we see the other two iconic figures playing lead roles in the next GOW, as for me i rather had seen some new caracters and somehow a story how it all started. But hey thats my opinion.
  • Blearing the line between friend or foe... well, if it's a free for all variant, well then, it should be a say 4 minuet match with 12 players, devided into 2 teams, every 30-60 seconds, the team boards randomly switch, meaning any friend could randomly become a foe, with random numbers per switch, leaving it eventually a 1 on 1. That would be interesting to try, but I'm still not buying this game until its in a decent sale, it doesn't seem like it'll be a good game from everything released so far. :/
  • @ #6 I'm with you. People Can Fly can go jump off of a cliff.
  • @27 blezinski :)
  • #25: There are two new characters, not just Cole and Baird.
  • @22 Hardly been in development? So when did Epic and PCF start the development of this game?
  • I tried to enjoy the multiplayer for this game but it was all wall bouncing and shotguns. Just not that fun to me, single player is fairly enjoyable, though.
  • Obviously, I don't mean "this" game, but the franchise. Figured I should clarify before someone jumped down my throat.
  • awesome! I am a huge fan of the gears of war series so I will no doubt go and buy this game.
  • well long as there is no retro lancer i am game :)
  • i agree i think GoW wasent as good as everyone thinks it is, i mean sure chainsawing shit is fun but honestly all 3 game look the same the graphics are no different they dont get better its alomst like CoD same shit different color, i only bought number 1 and rented the 2nd and barrowed the 3rd i dont like any of them, and say what you will but id much rather have a BULLETSTORM 2( i loved bulletstorm despite the short storyline ) lol then a new GoW, and aside from that wasent GoW3 supposed to be the last GoW game they ever make? lol
  • Lee Bradley, can you please answer a question that's been going around my friends? Is Overrun going to replace Horde, or stand along side it? Thanks.
  • Im with 6. This games gunna fuckin tank so bad. The dudes that made bullet stprm is makin this game and bullet storm sucked dick so bad. Its gumna be an epic fail. The company is just tryin to make money. And ffa is always gunna be ffa no matter how they do it. Im not even botherin ith this game. I really couldnt give 2shyts about baird or coles past. I just spent a few years goin through fenixs stroy and those 3 games were good but im done with the series.
  • cant wait to see Cliffy B trying to act like he actually endorses this
  • Could be something similiar to Juggernaut in halo :o
  • @ 40 We already have that in Gears 3, all you have to do is play as a Savage Kantus LE or Big Rig Dizzy. ;) But no seriously, it's just solo Wingman. (Or "Free-For-All", as they're calling it.) Also, it's been confirmed that Garron is holding the new weapon; and it'll be revealed soon.
  • @10 I have to disagree. If anything, I think GoW got better. Maybe you didn't like some new features in GoW3, as many people didn't. I'm not sure if it's just me, but I play GoW mainly for its story; it's like Assassin's Creed, the story is what sells the game (imo). The MP is enjoyable for me, but I'm not used to all of the shotgunning and what not. Either way, I think saying the game dying after the first is FAR from true.
  • I think it is unfair to slate this game before it has even released. People are so sceptical sometimes, and should keep their comments to themselves, unless they actually have anything constructive to add. All the gears of war games have been great. I agree that some features in gow 2 and gow 3 were hard to get used to and sometimes annoying, but you cant please everyone in creating sequels. Judgement for me is a welcoming addition to the gears franchise, and a stop gap until the next two are released on the next console.
  • @38 Your comment is an Epic fail. Your spelling is bad and you don't even realize that both People can fly and Epic are co-developing Judgment. @25 If The franchise died after part 2 then part 3 wouldn't have sold as well as it did. Do you not understand what happens to a franchise when it dies? Idiot.
