Greg Zeschuk Leaves BioWare Austin, Studio to be Renamed EA Austin? [Updated]

[Update]

Turns out the rumour was just guff. He's not going anywhere.

Instead, the BioWare co-founder told Gamasutra that he has merely stepped down from his position as general manager of BioWare Austin, in order to assume a broader role at the company.

"With regard to BioWare Austin, I handed off the leadership of the studio to Matthew Bromberg quite some time ago (back in May)," he said. "Ray [Muzyka, BioWare co-founder] and I picked Matthew to take over and he's been doing a great job with the studio.

"My time in Austin was always planned to have a finite endpoint (my family was still living in Edmonton throughout my time in Austin) and now that I've handed the baton to Matt, I will be able to spend more time on a wider range of BioWare games rather than focusing on just one as I did with SWTOR."

[Original Story]

Reports are suggesting that BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has left BioWare Austin, the developer behind the struggling MMO  Star Wars: The Old Republic.

EA claim Zeschuk is taking some planned time off following the reorganisation of the company in May, but his LinkedIn profile suggests otherwise.

On the business networking site, Zechuk’s profile says he left the company in May, while GamersGlobal claims that neither Greg Zeschuk nor Ray Muzyka were present at a recent leadership meeting at the Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic studio.

An internal source claims that Zeschuk and Muzyka’s absence in such a meeting is unheard of.

It is being suggested that Major League Gaming CEO Matthew Bromberg has taken Zeschuk’s position and that BioWare Austin is to be renamed EA Austin.

Greg Zeschuk co-founded Bioware with Ray Muzyka and Augustine Yip back in 1995.

EA has refused to issue any official comment on the story.

Nice to see EA are jumping straight into his bed as soon as he is gone. Can see it now,
"So guys... Has he left yet?"
"... Ummmm, YEAH! Just left now!"
"Nice! So.. Show of hands for renaming it EA Austin?"

I agree. Must be horrible to leave something you started behind. Guess that's what happens when you lose/give control of it to someone else.

If I ever start anything of any worth (unlikely) it'll be mine FOREVER!

I don't have any sympathy for Zeschuk or Muzyka. They knew they were selling their souls by signing with EA. Heh, poor jobless and depressed multimillionaires. SWToR was a trainwreck and so was the ending of ME3. Oh I know what you're all thinking, I know they contributed to the cause of video gaming more than anyone else (except maybe Blizzard) for a decade, but now they need to retire. If only were it on a high note.

This is crappy news for any gameing fan, is that how you react to A co-founder of one of the most consistantly great gaming company's leaving? What's your thinking?
"meh, he served his purpose. We don't need him anymore!"
This article is a sign that EA are just going to swallow Bioware up completely! And for me that is bad news.

My point exactly, but EA couldn't have done so without those two guys' signatures. Keep that in mind. That's the sad thing.

'They knew they were selling their souls by signing with EA.'
You seem to be forgetting that no-one hated EA at the time they signed up - EA were on the back of awesome games like Dead Space, Crysis and Mirrors Edge at that point.
It was only about a year after that all the EA hate started to accumulate, up until that point everyone was primarily hating on Activision.

The EA hate has been around for a very long time, long before Dead Space, Crysis and Mirror's Edge. EA has been hated for the Madden Syndrome long before Activision caught it.

After being indoctrinated by EA and their franchise destroying money grabs, Bioware is nothing but a souless husk anyways. I still look back fondly at Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars KoR, and Mass Effect 1, then I look at Dragon Age 2 and a lot of the issues with ME 3 and just shake my head. These guys used to design some of the greatest RPGs ever, now they've clearly abandoned that in favor of pumping out COD-esque action games.

I don't know what exactly you would class as 'long', but the first instance I recall was with the milking of the Need for Speed franchise in about 2008.
Fifa/Madden/NBA/Tiger woods were admittedly being milked, but nowadays it's somewhat easy to forget, considering most hate is centred around FPS's and games like Guitar Hero and Need for Speed... the yearly sports iterations just seem to get a free pass in the eyes of the gaming community.

And people are surprised by this? When the next game out of a former bioware studio doesn't sell well enough watch EA shut the studio altogether they have done it before and will keep on doing it.

@11 They were looking better that year but it was still dubious to trust them. Think Westwood and Bullfrog.

After Mass Effect 3 and SWTOR, I'm really not suprised by this. Such a shame to happen to one of the best developers there is. Rest in piece BioWare.

EA have the Midas touch most certainly. They need to be careful because soon enough they will have touched one too many things and it will be their undoing.

As has been stated Bioware made amazing games, but all that is falling apart, DA:2 was te start, DICE will follow suit....sorry have followed suit with BF3 and battlelog. EA really don't know how to stop being sick heads do they? They must be proud of being the worst company in the world.

Goodbye bioware, your games will e remembered but as Faustus found out, you sign your soul to the devil and he will come for payment one day

@23 I agree they should have stayed with Microsoft, perhaps they wouldn't have forced MP into ME3 like I'm sure EA did. Personally though I didn't have a problem with ME 2 and 3. To be honest, my favourite of the three games was the second one. Not sure why, perhaps the deeper story, great locations and tons of characters to play with. ME 1 was good but for me 2 was the best. I enjoyed the final chapter in the series, but the exploration was severely lacking and that's what I didn't like.

EA really have all their fingers in all the pies. They will soon take over the whole world if we don't keep them under control. Maybe one day a Dev will reject an offer from EA after seeing what they have done.

HERE WE GO! Been waiting for this news the second EA got its cancer causing hands on BioWare, as it meant BioWare was going to join the likes of Origin, Westwood, Maxis, and Pandemic.

RIP BioWare.

I've hated EA since they destroyed Origin and have not really PC gamed since then. I've stopped buying EA games new since Mass Effect 2, I've either been buying used (Gamefly) or skiiping out altogether. Everyone knew this was coming, tis what happens when you're gobbled up. Vote with your wallet!

I'm guessing most (read all) of you just read the title and posted immediately that EA was killing Bioware? He stepped down to "have a broader role" in the making of Bioware games. And the article says right off the jump, literally in the first sentence, that the rumor of him leaving and subsequent renaming of the studio was just "guff". By the way, guff means nonsense, making the article below the bold-faced type "Original Story" a rumor that was false.

@34, most of those comments were before the update. After the negativity and doom were taken out of it, most folks lost interest and stopped commenting. One guy actually left to finish his master thesis: "How EA Killed My Dog and Made Me Less Attractive: the True Story of How EA Created COD to Shadow Their Own Evil."

He's #1628 on the FBI's watchlist.

The only reason the Star Wars MMo is struggling is because people who play MMO play so much of it its impossible to keep up with them.
