Guillermo del Toro's inSANE Trilogy is Shelved by THQ

In what is actually a generally positive Q1 report for THQ, the publisher has announced that it's shelved Guillermo del Toro's inSANE trilogy with all IP rights returned to the movie director, whose films include the likes of Hellboy, Blade II and Pan's Labyrinth.

“We have decided not to pursue further pre-production on inSANE, and have returned all of our IP rights to Guillermo del Toro," THQ President Jason Rubin confirmed to investors on a conference call. "By cancelling these explorations outside of our core business, we feel we can improve focus on our core game portfolio, which remains unchanged.”

It's likely that developer Volition's work on other projects such as Saints Row 4 and del Toro's numerous movie projects in the pipeline has also put the brakes on inSANE, and it's unclear at what stage the game was at in its production. Based on last year's report that inSANE was still two or three years away, it's possible that it was still in pre-production.

  • phew now pass this on to a bigger gaming studio, preferably not EA tho as they milk you for everythign nowadays
  • What a shame. Should've got rid of that Homerfront sequel instead.
  • I'm actually kind of glad they did this. I feel like they wouldn't have paid enough attention to it to make it decent. Hopefully a better company gets a chance to work on this. Bethesda anyone?
  • The guy is a master of horror, @3 hope better compnay gets a grip on this

  • They're tossing away everything new and trying to milk the old. Anyone else seen how much SR3 DLC they're putting out? Doesn't sound like they're doing well.
  • This looked interesting, what a shame! @2 Couldn't agree more :) @3 Bethesda? I'd prefer a game that arrived in a semi working format and not glitched to high hell, thanks.
  • Like others have said, hopefully some other dev not only picks this up, but makes good of it.
  • Bethesda could be nice, depending on which studio gets the job. id and the BethSoftworks teams are busy anyway, Obsidian would be out of their comfort zone and inXile would be pretty bad in every way - but Arkane Studios could do a great job, as Dishonoured seems very interesting and innovative, and the team would be done by this fall and could move on to new projects, i.e. inSane. Another great partner would be Take2 as they haven't released a bad game in years and they have the creative talent and ressources available, that this game would require.
  • Hope he finds a great dev to get this back on track a del toro and lovecraft video game sounds amazing.
  • And this is why I hate gaming.
  • Another THQ franchise dropped /:
  • Oh yea THQ but let's keep making those RETARDED ASS wrestling games!and cancel what look to be 2 of the coolest looking games we have (Devils Third, inSANE) I swear the only shit that company has now really worth buying is Darksiders 2 cu, there gonna run Saints Row into the ground! THQ is about on my same hate level as Codemasters. Both are POS company's that are scared to make any real money so lets keep putting out F1/Dirt and WWE remakes every year to the idiots that buy them! Go ahead and do the world a favor THQ and just sell to someone that knows how to run a game publishing company. RANT OVER
  • @#13: Scared to make money? You gotta be kidding! Problem is, the F1 and Wrestling are the only things that make money. It's not as if THQ hasn't tried - they risked a lot with the last two Red Factions, Homefront, uDraw, UFC, Darksiders and Metro. The latter two became successful and it's probably not THQ's fault, that UFC sold out to EA. The other gamblings turned out disasterous and nearly killed the company - no wonder they had to diminish the risks for the foreseeable future. As much as I'd love to play Devil's Third and inSane - from a business standpoint it was the absolute right decision. Besides that, THQ ain't that bad: they've still got two Warhammer 40k-games, Company of Heroes 2, Metro: Last Light and South Park: The Stick of Truth - sounds not that bad to me, does it? :)
  • @14 great point guy I totally see ur point. The uDraw was just a dumb move first of all, and yes they still have great games like South Park, and Metro, but what puzzlesme is why keep a shitty military shooter like Homefront that flopped, and dropped 2 games like inSANE, and Devils Third?
  • I do hope that this game gets picked up elsewhere. I was actually looking forward to a Guillermo del Toro videogame. Guess I'll be waiting for a while longer though. I can't wait to see how THQ do with the new South Park game. It looks badass!
  • Shame about THQ. Hopeful other publisher picked it up cos inSANE look like one of most anticipated title in 2013/2014.
  • @7 Name a Bethesda made game that was glitched "to high hell". I mentioned Bethesda and I got thumbed down? lol... I'm convinced the majority of people on this site hate EVERY developer now.
  • Visceral Games please.
  • @15: Well, uDraw obviously wasn't meant for us gamers, it was for the casual audience, that Kinect should have drawn to the Xbox. So it was a gamble, but none as bad as it seems now ;) And the last Itagaki success (or in general: success by a distinctly Japanese game) occured quite a while ago. So from a business man's point of view, Homefront sure was the better option. Besides: Don't count that one out yet - Crytek's gameplay and technical expertise combined with the story and atmosphere of the first game ... who knows, it could turn out to be quite a bomb shell. :)
