Grand Theft Auto V Release Date Still AWOL as Epsilon Program Site Updates
Written Wednesday, August 01, 2012 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

It was hoped that last night's Take-Two investor call might shed some light on a possible release window for Grand Theft Auto V, but alas, a date for the series' return trip to San Andreas is still under wraps with Rockstar Games remaining tight-lipped regarding any information on when the game might surface.

There's even speculation that GTA V could end up slipping into next-gen territory, as Rockstar has yet to even confirm platforms for its open-world opus. Still, according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, Grand Theft Auto V is "in full development and showing substantial progress," so at least that's something.

Take-Two also reported losses, citing slow sales of Max Payne 3 - which has actually shifted three million units globally to date - and Spec Ops: The Line. However, in other GTA V news, the game's brilliantly tongue-in-cheek spoof religious site for San Andreas' Epsilon Program has updated, with a Twitter feed also going live, enabling you to keep up with the cult's insane ramblings. Did you know we all come from the same tree? FACT!

Rest assured that we'll have more on Grand Theft Auto V as soon as we get it. Kifflom!

San Andreas? Are we going to see the whole San Andreas area (San Fierro and Las Venturas as well) or just Los Santos as previously seen in trailers?

I'd be very surprised if GTAV comes out this year. As much as I want it to I'm sure it will be a early 2013 title.

All these fanboys crying over a release date need to shut up. They made the mistake of telling you they are working on the game and suddenly you think they owe it to you to give a release date or more information. Let them work on their game and it will come out soon enough.

And please stop whoring Max Payne and Red Dead articles with GTA release date questions.

Lots of rumours surrounding a release this year, but I don't believe it. I wouldn't expect to see it until the second half of next year personally, at the earliest.

Even if they did issue a release date it would be meaningless - have we all forgotten that GTA IV was dated for October 2007, but didn;t actually see a release until April 29, 2008?

You have to hand it to R*, they manage to produce the best spoof website/videos/marketing campaigns and then continue to release amazing games. As crazy as the video game industry may seem, we can always depend on R*

Hmm a release date for GTA 5 would probably be something around April/May next yeah since the last 4 years Rockstar have had a big release it has been those months.
Max Payne - LA Noire - Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4.. soooo no big surprise if that will be the same thing with the next GTA Game...

What is this 2013 people speak of? The world is ending this year. It would honestly be hilarious if some developers stopped working on games and 2013 hits and they realize they won't make that March release date. lol.

Seriously though, I'm getting pretty hype for this game. Can't wait to play it.

I dont mind if it's next-gen but I hope it's this gen as I wont be able to afford any new systems for quite a while. Bills, house repairs, etc. probably won't be able to grab it for 6-7 years (unless I get a nice raise). New system is not gonna be a priority any time soon. Not their problem, I know. Just hope it comes sooner rather than later.

Q: What's the biggest roadblock to getting the GTAV release date?

A: The rest of the unreleased Max Payne 3 DLC.

See, R* realize that a lot of their fans are not made of money and that they will often choose not to spend on one thing now in order to afford something they want even more later.

If R* were to give a release date for GTAV, all sales on Max Payne 3 DLC would stop because people would save their money for GTA. (The already tepid sales are why they're discounting the things as it is, much to the chagrin of those that bought a season pass.)

There's also the sticking point that Take-Two have promised shareholders that they'll make nearly $2 billion in revenue by the end of March 2013.

As I've been saying, they will not get close to that number without GTAV.

4: I think they told us that only Los Angeles would be in the game, no Vegas, San Fran or midlands between the cities. Kind of depressing because I loved the entire map, and no one individual city.

If they release it in 2013, they might as well make it next gen, assuming the next Xbox will be coming out around Nov. 2013.

I can wait in that case, it will be worth it. :)

@37 - While you are technically correct, R* released GTAIV, Midnight Club: Los Angeles and the 360 version of Bully all in 2008. So releasing more than one game a year isn't unheard of for them.

Also, you've overlooked the fact that R* have had 2 financial failures in as many years - L.A. Noire and now Max Payne 3. Both games had long development cycles and had great sums of cash spent on them that were not returned by retail sales.

I think breaking a "tradition" they never really set would be easy when it means they might actually make some money. I'm sure the shareholders want that as well...

GTAV will release before year's end, just in time for Christmas - I bet they announce it a week or so after the last Max Payne 3 DLC is out.

People need to stop worrying if this is a next-gen title. Rockstar would still release the game on the 360 and PS3, there's just too many consoles out there not to release it on those consoles. Rockstar would be passing on 10's of millions of sales. Plus there isn't even a next-gen system announced yet.

I really wouldn't be surprised if they release GTA5 on the 360 and PS3 next year, some time after May 2013 because of Bioshock: Infinites' February release date. Then Rockstar could have a next-gen version of GTA5 ready to go for (if)when the next-gen console releases late next year or 2014, or whenever that will be.

I'd love it if Rockstar surprised everyone and said October for a GTA5 release. You'd definitely see a lot of dev's and publishers who have games releasing in October panic if that happened.

GTA V will be released in October 2013 on the following consoles Xbox360-Ps3 ????

well richard shouldnt have mentioned it as a possible next gen. MS has said 2015 for next gen. due to kinect & avoiding the rrod stuff. also MS wants to see how the market will go. so no on the next gen crap!

as for this game, i have yet to beat any of the GTA series! so i'm in no hurry to get it. also many companies have said they dont want to flood the market every year. which was a concern after the GH & RB flooding of music games. all & all i'd say next year release. its to early for a 2012 release. its on track for 2013 though.

in the mean time R* has had ALOT of hit titles. so finacial proablems is just a smokescreen.

@#48 - You're totally right about R* having a number of hit games.

The only problem?: Not a single one of them is generating revenue for R* at the moment. Lots of people are still playing GTAIV and RDR Multiplayer, but R* doesn't get any additional earnings out of that activity.

The game that's supposed to be bringing home the bacon - and isn't - is Max Payne 3. Coupled with the fact that L.A. Noire was also a financial bomb, R* have not had the revenue streams they are used to generating. This is not a smokescreen, but the reality of the situations of these two games - them not giving a release date for GTAV is the smokescreen.

They need GTAV to come out as desperately as fans want to play it.

@37 : It means nothing. Before GTA IV, most GTA were released on October (and at first, GTA IV was even planned in October).

GTA III : October
GTA Vice City : October
GTA San Andreas : October
GTA Liberty Cites Stories (PSP) : October
GTA Chinatown Wars (PSP) : October

and then, after GTA IV delay, they decided to go mainly with May releases.

They could keep May or choose a completely different month, it wouldn't be the first time they change their schedule.
