Could CD Projekt Be Considering Multiplayer for The Witcher 3?

The Witcher developer CD Projekt RED is hiring for a 'Multiplayer Programmer' to work on an RPG set in a "dark fantasy world" and its second project: an RPG based in a cyberpunk world. It's thought that the dark fantasy in question could be a follow-up to The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which could mean multiplayer might find its way into The Witcher 3. Erm...

The successful candidate will be required to work with the developer's proprietary RED Engine and must have "experience in developing RPG games", "experience with physics in a multiplayer environment" and "experience creating gameplay systems in a multiplayer environment". They'll also need to have "at least one shipped multi-platform, multiplayer title" and experience "with matchmaking solutions on different platforms".

That means that both CD Projekt's mystery cyberpunk RPG project and what seems to clearly be The Witcher 3 will be going multi-platform, and both could potentially have a multiplayer component. How that will work is anyone's guess, but it wasn't something we asked for in our 'what we want from a Witcher 2 sequel' feature. Never mind. We could still be getting it anyway.

Could The Witcher 3's multiplayer be something worthwhile, or is it a case of shoehorning in a feature that the single-player story-driven RPG doesn't need? Discuss!

  • Wonder what the multiplayer would play like..
  • Risky business. However the innovation of CD Projekt knows no bounds. Undoubtedly this will be an interesting and valuable addition as opposed to tacked on. That or a trial run of multiplayer in the arena mode seen in The Witcher 2.
  • the witcher series should stay sp but a co-op mode might b alright bc i dont think pvp would b good in the witcher
  • As long as it's not actually proper multiplayer and just CO-OP. That being said though some kind of duel aspect would be cool.
  • The arena based minigame would work well as co op. But i don't think any PvP multiplayer would work well. I love Witcher 2 how it is, no need to add real multiplayer
  • I trust CD Project a lot. I think they're one of the best developers in this industry, therefore I'm not too worried about this. I highly doubt they're going to make the entire game co-op... Perhaps a co-op arena mode? Or perhaps it's a mode similar to Dragon's dogma?
  • Loved The Witcher 2. This is one of best games I played this year. So for MP in The Witcher 3? I think better maybe have Coop or MP mode for Arena while Campaign is for single-player only. In my opinion I think PvP or Matchmaking is not right for this franchise. :)
  • Thank God! The Witcher 2 was one of the most amazing games I've played this generation, but the whole time I was like "why in the hell didn't they ruin this game by forcing in some dodgy multiplayer?" PRAYERS ANSWERED!
  • How is Cyberpunk mysterious? They officially announced it (as beng based on the Cyberpunk license) 4 months ago oO
  • No multiplayer unless its coop please! I just finished Witcher 2 for the first time and I would love a sequel, but don't need the MP. Didn't need it in Dead Space 2 or Bioshock 2, we definitely don't need it here.
  • So long as it doesn't detract from single-player..
  • Don't ruin a GREAT single player game, with multiplayer.
  • Hopefully it's some coop. FULL CAMPAIGN COOP!
  • I was just thinking about this last night. I mean, I love Witcher 2, and, honestly, it doesn't *need* multiplayer, but it doesn't mean it's instantly ruined by adding it. I mean, if you've read any of the books or stories, it's easy to picture. Imagine a sort of story-driven Monster Hunter-style game where everyone plays a Witcher. You get hired by kings to kill monsters and break curses and interact with wild beasts and choose whether you destroy them as the monsters they are or let them live in peace. There's really a potential in it that I wouldn't mind exploring. Seriously, give me the ability to make a call like "A Grain of Truth," and I will love it. Just don't shoe-horn it in, CD Projekt. I'm trusting you.
  • Oh great, another developer jumping in on the multi-player bandwagon!! :-(
  • Just my opinion, but... not interested. I know some people were okay with and enjoyed ME getting MP. I wasn't one of them. None of these games (ME, Witcher, etc) are perfect, and until they are that MP funding could be better spent improving the SP, IMO. I'm not big on MP generally though, I fully admit.
  • I guess Witchers don't have immunity to diseases after all, if this turns out to be true.
  • Oh, God no, not another wonderful game with useless multiplayer...
  • it seems like three is the lucky charm for games to get multiplayer. I am sure it could be pulled off.
  • Please, CD Projekt, don't.
  • attention game developers: you do not need to add multiplayer to every fucking game. I'm not saying it will automatically suck, but it just isn't necessary...
  • CD projekt did announce that they are taking on more than one project right? So it could be for the other game and not the Witcher. My guess anyway.
  • Ok, this is why you read before you write haha, looks like I'm completely wrong, sorry guys!
  • Why does multiplayer have to be added to everything. Hopefully it doesn't take away from the main game at all
  • @22 Did they have 2 Dark Fantasy games in the works? I believe the other is Cyberpunk.
  • No! No! No! No! No! No!
  • This is CD Project Red, they won't add it if they don't think it will add to the experience. I have faith.
  • No. If they do this, I will pirate TW3 and all other games they will do from here to eternity. I will not support tacked-on MP even if the single player is good. And I fucking love TW1 and 2. The second crash is coming.. And it will be glorious.
  • Great news, more content in the game is always welcome.
  • Can they please finish porting Witcher I first?
  • @28 So you'll pirate the game because they might add something that nobody is forcing you to play? Some fan you are. OT: I really enjoyed The Witcher 2 even though I found it a bit short. Hopefully they will make this one longer.
  • The Witcher 2 promised much, delivered little. They should spend time making a single player game worthy of the name before they start trying to cash in on online passes.
  • No not interested. Come on people some games don't need multiplayer. Did Assassins creed need it? No. Did Bioshock 2 need it? No. Did GTA need it? FUCK NO FUCK THIS SHIT. These are meant to be Single Player games. Instead of putting in Multiplayer put in more Single Player content. OR better yet, how about Co op local and online if you are going to put a multiplayer option in what is clearly a single player game.
  • @33: My best GTA memories are multiplayer.
  • @33 Yeah you lost me at GTA.. Free Roam is still some of the best fun to be had period. Although the previous two games did have fun multiplayer (especially AssCreed) I can see how people would think they weren't necessary (because they aren't and are absolutely OPTIONAL)
  • 90% sure they're probably talking about Cyberpunk, not Witcher 3.
  • Yay another game that should be single player getting MP tacked on
  • Oh, fucking hell. I am so tired of MP being thrown into EVERYTHING...
  • Yeah, MP in a fairly linear story-based game that follows a single character. Joy... Much rather see it in a new title, where it can be fully integrated from the beginning.
