The Elder Scrolls Online Could Potentially Come To Consoles
Written Wednesday, July 18, 2012 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

The Elder Scrolls Online is an MMO coming exclusively to PCs in 2013, but Zenimax Online studio head Matt Firor has told GamesIndustry.biz in so many words that a console version hasn't been ruled out. THe only thing holding a console version back is uncertainty surrounding the next-generation of consoles.

"There are a lot of rumours swirling around the next-gen coming back together with PCs," Firor stated. "It seems like things are going back to a more standard platform. That being said, we haven't thought about it heavily right now. The worst thing you can do is worry about new platforms while in development."

The studio is looking to expand The Elder Scrolls Online however and that plan could extend to console versions in the future. "We want to do what we're doing right now and then look around for further opportunities. Certainly we're open to new opportunities, and we're going to be looking into new territories beyond North America and Europe," said Firor.

Were there to be a console version of The Elder Scrolls Online, it's possible that it could connect with the PC version a la Final Fantasy XI. "It's the classic desk vs. couch argument, but it is blurring over time. The current-gen and previous-gen MMOs were all about using the keyboard and mouse, and sure, everyone used things like Ventrilo and other voice chat services, but that only works in a small group. A lot of that has been thanks to design problems that people haven't focused on a lot, such as typing and controlling at the same time," Firor explained.

"The 360, when announced was a pretty ridiculously cool device, but it is not so good anymore compared to PCs and even when it was announced PCs were still better than it," he added. "The technology was a little limiting for the size and scope of the world you could have. It mostly comes down to PCs being wide open. Online game development is all about doing whatever you want, pushing limitations, and it's just easier to do on an open platform. Someday, it may all change."

Hopefully this could happen, We need more MMO's on consoles in my opinion as i'm really starting to get slightly bored with the same old shite developers keep churning out.

What ever happened to Guild Wars 2? Heard it may be heading to consoles due to it being a free to play MMO but haven't hears any updates in a while.

This would be an interesting addition to consoles, although I hope the possibility of it isn't stopping progress on a new game for consoles

I loved Final fantasy 11 on the 360 (after not being able to get into it while playing on PC)and made some great friends on there, whether they were 360,PS2 or PC players

I would love for this to happen on the next Xbox, but with Microsoft's current stance on MMO's i can't see it happening(They cancelled True Fantasy, and Marvel MMO's and they wont let FF14 come to the xbox and i doubt the new Phantasy online will be Xbox bound like the first one was)

@13 Can you please explain how consoles are the bare minimum? The only thing that PC gamers have over console gamers that is of any importance are mods and(in some games) more players in a match. So you go have fun with your "superior" PC. I will have fun with my "inferior" console because I don't feel like paying over $300 just to be able to play something for fun when I can get it for $100.

@12 And consoles offer an easier way to control games. I get confused these about what keyboard buttons are needed to be pressed to play the games properly.

@15 Battlefield springs foremost to mind because of how limited the console version is. the graphics are atrocious by comparison, poor draw distance and of course probably the most noticable,64 player multiplayer with smaller maps, les vehicles and less particals. Oh,I forgot to mention maximum 30fps (which is considered unplayable in pc games). 720p resolution too.

@1 my breath is just fine thank you very much :)

Really when it comes to PC vs. console you really have had to grown up with PC to really get why it's so good IMO. I own both a 360 and my current PC which I am in the process of upgrading and honestly it really depends on the specifics. Certain games are better on console and some games are better on PC.

I think RAGE and Saints Row 2 so far are good examples of 360 games that were better on a console. I think the ports of those games were poorly developed on PC considering that RAGE errors out a lot and Saints Row has bad framerate issues.

When it comes to graphics in games I honestly could give a shit less about them. However, When you compare a certain game's graphics on a high end PC to console, they tend to be significantly better on PC. You see it more when you view cut scenes. It seems like on a 360 the lighting is flushed out and somewhat darker.

When it comes to controls I really think you just have to have had years of experience to really get down with a keyboard and mouse, but it's really not that confusing if you get used to it. When it comes to putting an MMO on a console, it really would lack a lot of options if you were stuck with just a controller. The only way I believe you can make a console MMO would be to add keyboard and mouse support (which the PS3 does).

As a PC user I wouldn't mind seeing some MMO's on console if they added a cross platform support like they are doing with Dust 514 and EVE online on the PS3. But I doubt that will happen.

I have been a huge Xbox fan since I got my first 360 in late 2007, but lately after playing games such as Starcraft II and Diablo III... I have been shifting towards the PC. The shift has gotten to the point now where I have decided to upgrade my laptop to a desktop.

I will admit that the graphics and amount of players in these games certainly helped but the defining factor for the PC being somewhat better is the type of games that are on the Pc that aren't on the console like MMOs and RTS's.

The Xbox and PC are both great machines and I will play them both for awhile, but I feel that the future is going to be PC with all the advantages it has over the Xbox.

@18 As I said the only thing on that list that im jealous about is the 64 players. If u think the graphics are atrocious then you must have one of those NASA computers because the graphics are far from atrocious. You can see an improvement in graphics from the console to the PC version, but for me it's not a lot to make me want to get a gaming computer. I also don't know why everybody says the maps are way too big for consoles. I manage to get at least 20 kills per match while playing conquest or rush. I barely use vehicles in BF for some unknown reason. But the game is still enjoyable even with less players.

I think it's pointless having these PC v consoles debate. Use whatever the hell you want and don't try to act like one is more superior, it's all down to personal preference.

@23 ...it's creepy how much that sounds like my situation.

As for this whole Console vs PC debate...I do understand there's people who simply can't afford to game on PC, but it's sad when I see console gamers simply not admit gaming on PC is just flat out better. Mod support, player count, graphics, tweaking, free to play games, exclusive games, exclusive genres (I'm sorry, but playing RTS on console is just...no...although Halo Wars was well thought out) and the list goes on, not to mention you have a damn good computer out of it (if you put a grand into it, although you could easily build one for much much cheaper). Gaming is just simply better on PC, no ifs, ands or buts. And what, so someone prefers a controller? Generally, most games SUPPORT a controller (many actually have native support for 360 controllers, just plug in and play), yes online games you'll probably get rocked, but the point is it's there. This debate shouldn't even really exist anymore.

So I read through the comments and I only Thumbs down one, #38.

Time and time and time again we have to have this argument because ppeople are too stupid to see thr truth. RTS games on consoles are not only, very possible, but also, very brilliantly done and accessible.

Play not C&C3 TW like most people did then immediately think the genre is dead on consoles, because that's bollocks. Play Kane's Wrath, play Red Alert 3. The CommandStick interface works like magic, there are no problems. RTS games did not fail the consoles or the console market, it was the "fans", morons and narrow-minded PC fanboys who abandoned it to die.

Forever destined to be niche and hardcore, Console RTS games are real gems to those of us who have the aptitude to play them. It is shame they failed because it's most likely as a direct result of that, that Westwood Studios was closed. So no more asinine "RTS games are only playable on PC" bullshit, please. It's not true, the games exist to prove you wrong, and if you "prefer" it still on PC, that does NOT equate to an irrefutable FACT that the PC ones are "better" or the console ones are "unplayable".

For a game that has been in development for 5 years, it looks pretty awful and generic. The only upside it has is it actually isn't being developed by Bethesda lol. Which means potentially less glitches. But still, very generic boring looking MMO.

Firstly, @37, thank God someone said it. It makes me wince to read stuff like that all the time. People, words like 'better', 'faster', 'superior' and so on all imply the word 'more' so you don't need to use it. For example if I said 'my jeans are more blue than yours' I could also say 'my jeans are bluer than yours' but not 'my jeans are more bluer than yours'. It's unnecessary repetition (or tautology).

Anyway, back to the debate. Why are we even arguing? As @49 said, good luck to you. If people who game on PC also have an Xbox, they can't be all that bad, surely? But personally I can't see that it's surprising for a piece of kit which costs five times more to be technologically superior. Personally, I'd still rather sit on my sofa and game on the 360. Great VFM. IMHO : )

Yes Xbox are really great, they procure really good entertainment for 350$. But if someone tells me that PC isn't better in terms of graphics, mods and diversity, I wouldn't believe how much of a fanboy he is. The community is different for each, yes, but it's there's not much you can do about it. The PC community is older than Xbox community (in terms of percentages) because it costs a lot to have a gaming PC : you need to work to pay for it (unless you're a rich kid).

eh number 26 your wrong when looking at it from the right view this game has just recently been started. The company that was supposed to make it was in fact not making this game but a fallout mmo, so just to make things straight, elder scrolls online has never been in the making until now. Also when looking back the company that had the rights first never touched elder scrolls online at all, so what, its been in the making for 3 or 4 months Damn I think you just got told get your facts straight before crap comes out of ones mouth GAWSH.

This is a pretty wonderful step in the direction I've been wanting Elder Scrolls to go. I've always wanted some sort of multiplayer with the game series, even if it was only a co-op style campaign. I understand the difficulties in such a thing, but one can hope right?

@56 - Maybe you should get *your* facts straight before crap comes out of *your* mouth?

The game was ANNOUNCED a few months ago. It has been in development for several YEARS.

It's scheduled for release next year - do you really think they started developing it a few months ago!?

Go and do some actual research before making disparaging remarks about others.
