Square Enix has today confirmed that award-winning writer Rhianna Pratchett, whose work includes Overlord II and Mirror's Edge, is the Lead Writer on Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider, covering the origins of a young Lara Croft and how she became the badass explorer/treasure hunter we all know and love.

English-born Pratchett has been involved in writing about and for video games for 14 years, from early years as a games journalist to writing narratives for a range of successful video games. Writing Tomb Raider was a dream realised for the Lead Writer, who grew up with the series.

“I grew up playing Tomb Raider, uncovering the world’s secrets and unearthing its treasures; I have lived and died as Lara Croft, but nothing comes close to the challenge of re-writing her,” said Pratchett “Seldom do we get the opportunity to reimagine and reinvent a legend, so getting my narrative hands on Miss Croft was a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. It was going back to the genesis of videogame action heroines and exploring how to make such an iconic character meaningful and relatable for gamers today.”

Tomb Raider is out on March 5th, 2013. Check out Lee B's hands-on preview for more on Lara's latest outing.

I understand that some people aren't over the moon that their changing the franchise so much, but I think it was really needed. I've played every tomb raider there ever was and I welcome the new look.

Hyped! I liked the story in ME, even if most people feel the campaign was the weakest point. I felt more for Faith and her struggle with a fascist government and largely apathetic society, and her concern for her sister, than I do for 99% of protagonists. I can't wait to play this.

I know it has no relevance in her abilities, but she is also the daughter of Terry Pratchett, writer of the Discworld novels. Just a pretty cool factoid.

The new Lara Croft seems like a pretty good choice. She's well built as well, but i guess that goes for any TR actor.

#5: Never knew, good pub quiz trivia.

This is the second time someone with something to do with this game has been described as English-born (The other being Luddington), is this some sort of marketing tactic? Does it make the game feel more legit and British to people? Seems arbitrary to mention.

@8 They have to do that or the fans will go ballistic if she wasn't. i think it's petty pointless to mention anyways... who gives a shit if they are or aren't.

I simply hit play just to see the girl, and I ended up watching the whole thing; was really interesting.

ANYWAYS, I am very excited about this game; going to be one of my top games in 2013, hopefully

I was more surprised to see Zach Levi there. I knew he was a gamer like us but even he seemed in awe.

This just isn't lara anymore.

Look at this way too many game companyies messing with the game chacters.

Resident evil 1-3 R.I.P
Duke Nukem (blame forever)
Metal Gear Solid
Call of duty 1-3
Halo 1-3
Crash bandicoot
Even the sonic franchise had a few problems for a while.
Or deadspace which didn't need co-op or mass effect with random multiplayer.

You see what I mean? seems a lot of companyies are changing games for the worst.

That guy in the video is so lame!!!!!

@14 Halo 4 is probably going to be as generic as all of the other Halo games. Crash Bandicoot got lame when Naughty Dog sold the rights and CoD changed for the better after 3 it just turned into a flameboy phenomena. Duke Nukem forever played just the same as the rest but the gameplay and lame catchphrases didn't live up to the hype. Sega tried to milk cow Sonic but hes just not as hip as he was in the 90s. Resident Evil did a great thing with 4 and while 5 was fun it just detracted the series from the horror genre that no developers seem fond of these days. The only good examples seem dead space and mass effect which just should have remained single player experiences.
