Kinect PlayFit Launches on US Xbox Live Today

Kinect PlayFit has launched on Xbox Live in the US today and is available for all Xbox Live members to download absolutely free. It'll be launching in other territories outside the US later this week, offering a new fitness dashboard feature that tracks the calories you burn while playing Kinect games.

So, whether you're playing Dance Central, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved or even Kinect Star Wars, Kinect PlayFit will aggregate and track all of your stats, contributing towards your overall position on the global Xbox Live members leaderboard. As well as competing for high scores, you'll also be able to unlock achievements and Avatar awards.

Kinect PlayFit is the first fitness tracking application of its kind on a games console, giving you extra incentive to get shifting the blubber, while earning achievements. Woo hoo and that. Have a look at what the Kinect PlayFit dashboard looks like in the image below.

Where can we DL this from? I looked all over the dashboard and Xbox.com but I don't see anything about it being on the marketplace?

Another American only source of gamerscore? I know I can get it if I am willing to create an American account, but that still strikes me as largely horse crap. Give us a Canadian equivelant if you can't release the app worldwide for one reason or another, but don't get lazy and hope that the rest of the world won't notice. At least Voice Studio got a world wide release eventually.

TigerII's an American, uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh...

Speaking for all Americans, I love Kinect and prefer pizza. Like a mutha-effin Ninja Turtle. Ninja Turtles are true Americans. Wait, what were we talking about again? Oh, right, PlayFit. Looks neat, I wish it was up so I could dl it.

If this can run in addition to other games why can't we listed to last.fm while we're playing a game?

I don't get it. It seems like all the articles I've seen about this Kinect PlayFit thing mention achievements, but I am yet to see a list for it. Does this have its own list actual gamerscore giving achievements or is it just some kind of in-app achievement list that is unrelated to gamerscore?

Assuming it's available I intend to download this and try it out once I get home from work tonight, but it's a little annoying that I can't seem to find out much about it right now since all the news stories I've seen say pretty much the same thing, which isn't much.

Um, it clearly says in the opening lines that this will release for territories outside of the US later this week, why is everyone flipping out that this is US only? The US's media release day is Tuesday, has been for decades. Much of the rest of the world is Friday, so it will probably be released then.

@27 The simple answer is that the non-US release info lacks any real detail (some places will get it eventually), so people assume they aren't getting it unless they specifically say they are. Most recent free items on LIVE (Haunt, Micro Lab Challenge) were all US only, too, so it's not like we are basing it on nothing. If the article does not say where the app is being released, the assumption is "not here."

And the release for media in Canada is Tuesday as well, Wednesday in Australia, I think. So delaying it makes no real sense, particularly since XBLA games usually release world wide simultaneously.

Yes it doesn't say specific countries, the other big gaming countries almost always get the things, those being Canada, UK, France, and Germany. As for the US getting extra, it is true, but I am guessing it is because the US has the most console gamers for a single nation(Notice I said console, because Chinese MMO gamers far outnumber the US).

@29 The key phrase there is "almost always." Not always. And it actually has more to do with short sighted advertising since most games receive outside funding in order to be free. Also probably because a lot of American gamers would flip shit if the situation was reversed.

@20 (myself)

Well I just downloaded this and got the answer to my own question. This app does indeed have achievements, a total of 20 worth 200 gamerscore, the list just hasn't been added to this site yet. While the app itself is free, it does absolutely nothing unless you have other games to use with it, and to get the full 200 you have to have at least 4 of the compatible games, and only 11 games are compatible so far. A list of what the 11 games are can be viewed from within the app, and sadly I only have one of them...

I hope they add additional games. I have two of the eleven that you can currently use with this app (Kinect Sports 2 and Dance Central 2). I hope they add Kinect Sports 1, Kinect Adventures, and Fruit Ninja. Some of the games on the list are head-scratchers (Once Upon a Monster and Disneyland Adventures), but I have played them so I shouldn't judge.

@40 can you list the compatible games for the non-US please? So far I see from your post:

1. Kinect Sports 2
2. Dance Central 2
3. Once Upon a Monster
4. Disneyland Adventures
5,6,7,8,9,10,11 TBC.

Will help people to decide if they will even bother downloading in case they don't have any of the games!

Hopefully they'll continue to add support for more games. I only have one from the current list, but a total of eight or nine Kinect games (so far). They should at least add Fruit Ninja to the lineup.
