Halo 4 Multiplayer Needs an 8GB Install

If your Xbox 360 hard drive is full to bursting, you might consider clearing a bit of space in anticipation of Halo 4's impending release later this year. Why? Because you'll need at least 8GB to play Halo 4's multiplayer according to Microsoft.

That means either having the required space on your hard drive or on a compatible 8GB (or bigger) USB Flash memory stick. Chances are most of you will have more than the required space, but it's worth noting if your hard drive space is reaching critical mass or if you have an old 20GB HDD or 4GB console.

"At a minimum, you'll need at least an 8GB USB Flash Drive or an Xbox 360 Hard Drive to play Multiplayer mode in Halo 4," a Halo 4 Xbox.com product page highlights. "For an optimal experience playing with an Xbox 360 Hard Drive is highly recommended."

It's possible that the substantial Spartan Ops mode will eat up some of that 8GB, as new episodes are released frequently alongside additional maps for competitive modes. So while an 8GB install might seem like bad news, the sliver lining is that Halo 4's multiplayer is going to be absolutely ma-hoo-sive. Read our Spartan Ops preview for more Halo 4.

Halo 4 is out on November 6th, 2012.

  • Sounds crazy, but condier Battlefield 3 needs nearly 5 gig already thanks to the updates.
  • Hefty amounts of content is always welcome.
  • 8GB?! wtf how much did they put there?
  • Halo 4 is going to be AWESOME!
  • Can you even install to a flash drive?
  • not bad my Battlefield is on i think 18-19 gig now
  • if it improves on gameplay then so be it...it still feels like a scam to force people to upgrade HD's.
  • That seems pretty ridiculously large (didn't know BF3 took 5 gig as #1 mentioned though). I have so much crap clogging up my 250Gig HDD that I, without deletions, wouldn't be able to play Halo 4 mutli. I have lots of games installed, huge piles of DLC and the like though. Could make room easy enough.
  • An average install is around 7.8 gig I don't really see the issue? Its probably just rounded off anyway as the capacity of an xbox 360 disc is now 7.95 gig.
  • how much of that is the le maps that were paying for an unlock key lol...
  • should have more than enough room for this. plus once i have finished with a game i delete all data off the box anyways. no point keeping a save for a game i probably wont play again.
  • Its ok though cause microsoft will try to sell you xbox's with a 4GB HDD...o wait, no...shit!
  • @9 They've specified the multiplayer. Which makes me think that Halo 4 will now ship on two discs. One for singleplayer, the other for multiplayer.
  • I hope removing Halo:Reach will clear enough space.
  • @9 That's for a full game this is sounding like it's just for the multiplayer. If that's the case then it guarantees I won't be buying this.
  • 8 GIG? That much Gig means the game is going to play like crap!!!! I'll Pass! If you can't tell, I'm being sarcastic. 8 gig = lots of fun stuff to hold. Halo 4 is going to be the game of the year!
  • Very excited for this multiplayer! If they go back to the basics of Halo 2 & 3 multiplayer I will be so happy!
  • @5 yes you can (the official xbox ones anyway)
  • @13 yea, definitely.
  • @13 - It better do, otherwise the campaign mode will be even shorter than Homefront.
  • fml ive only got one of the old 20gb drives and xbox HDD's are so overpriced that no way am i going to upgrade. 250gb of memory is worth about £40 but Microsoft try and charge £150. No chance in hell. Ill just do without multiplayer.
  • Why does MS continue to waste peoples time with a 4 gig model Xbox when one can't even play their flagship title on it out of the box? I recently bought an old Elite 120G drive so I'm ok for now. The next-gen systems should be shipping with at least 320 gigs for the low end model.
  • Next gen consoles should have a 1TB hard drive, solves all issues and they arent expensive now nevermind in the next year or 2. I mean tv recorders (sky/virgin) all have 1tb hard drive models, my external for my laptop pc is 1tb and cost £30 (western digital)
  • @21 look on Amazon. Old style 250G = £46 and new style 250G = £60 and 320G = £65. I don't know where you are getting 150 quid from.
  • sounds like CoDs Season of Content to me
  • Wow, I assume Multiplayer will be quite complex then. I'm in! H4 definitely should come with 2 discs. I want to see more Multiplayer gameplay pleeaaasse!
  • Thank god I just upgraded from my old 20gb HD to a 120gb HD.
  • @21 the fat Xbox hdd's are super cheap now, even the 320g slim hdd can be bought for £70.... where you getting £150 from ?
  • This is ridiculous!! This means I have to spend £50 on a new game and will have to spend another £50 just to play multiplayer on it as I have the original 20gHDD?? I'm a student, it's gonna be hard enough for me to get the game let alone a new hard drive...shame on you 343...shame on you...
  • @21 i picked one up on amazon for about 60 quid. definitely worth getting one if you need one like i did.
  • 8GBs? The damn disc can't even hold 8GBs.. Not that I care or am mad.. But I just don't see how we are getting 8GBs just for MP from the disc when there is also campaign.. So unless we are downloading a lot of data when the games drop... Then Idk Quite interesting to me..
  • @29 You can get an 8GB memory stick really cheap. I got a 16GB one for £8 months ago. I don't get how people can complain that a game has TOO MUCH content.
  • be more interesting if that 8gb is just multiplayer and sparten ops has only the first week of content on there the rest requires more than and 8gb install with multiplayer dlc and capaign installed we could be looking at over 20gb :D guessing we'll be having 2 probebly 3 disks included with halo then
  • @15 Wait...so having a massive amount of multiplayer content make you NOT want the game? What, where you hoping they would give you just 5 or 6 maps and charge you insane amounts of cash to download the rest as DLC later on?
  • #29: It's summer and exams are over. The game's coming out in November. Get job.
  • While I can understand the apprehension of a lot of people here, I see this as the natural progression in gaming. Games are only going to get bigger as time moves on.
  • @24 and 28. play.com are selling them for £159.99, on amazon £129.99. The cheaper ones look like knock offs. It doesnt matter about the price anyway. Im not going to buy Halo 4 and then spend more than i did on the game buying a new hard drive just to play multiplayer.
  • Cant wait i like the idea of 8 GB worth of data that means the game shouldnt die after a mointh or 2
  • @15 LOL. Seriously not buying a game because it's too big in file size?
  • Can't wait for Halo 4!
  • Expect the usual Xbox 360 console + Halo 4 + 4GB hard drive bundle... oh wait a minute...
  • i hope the new xbox comes with terabytes of storage. one day it will have to when all games can only be downloaded.
  • Ahhh big install, ehehe that ok I got 250GB anyway. :)
  • Did no-one else notice the 'for an optimal experience playing with an Xbox 360 hard drive is recommended bit'? It's probably like the Battlefield 3 HD install, so you can play with or without it, but it will look better with.
  • @35 It's a little thing called university? I'm quite positive they wouldn't want to waste an employers time by getting a summer job, when they have to quit about 4 weeks after starting. OT: Meh, I imagine it'll be 2 discs, but possibly with an optional download on the side, like @44 suggested.
  • Typical cheapskates moaning. If you bought the 4gb Xbox knowing VERY WELL you play online and loads of games regularly, then you're the sucker and deserve to have to pay even more to get a new HDD. You know online games etc take more storage so.. only yourselves to blame. Don't come here slating Microsoft and Halo for your idiocy. There my rants over. ..Oh and, those who moan about not having enough space on their 250GB HDD's etc... Learn to clean up your stuff. It's not hard to delete saved files for games you've completed, 1000g'd, traded-in, sold or not going to play again.
  • ive had a 60gb HDD for 5 years....and ive always kept the shit i NEED on there. i have 28gb left..no problem. bring on halo 4!!
  • I don't get how people fill up the 150g+ harddrives....delete all the shit you don't need like demos and installed games you don't own or play anymore. Just baffles me how people cry about news like this requiring their precious space but then turn around and tell you they have a 250 filled up. Dafuq....
  • 8 gb??? Sweet jesus. Well good thing I still have 120+ gb on my hard drive.
  • @23 you are comparing apples to oranges. the cost of your external 1tb drive is meaningless. look at the cost of a 1tb laptop harddrive, because that is the form factor that the 360 uses. when you realize that the entire system has to retail for around the $400 mark, using a $100 harddrive might not be feasible. its unlikely that microsoft will be going back to using desktop sized harddrives like they did for the xbox1.
  • Trying to force me out of my 20GB HDD and make me buy a new Xbox... Smh
  • Lol me too Jack Flak!
  • Holy sh*t, I've been struggling to maintain an average of 2GB over the course of two years with a 20GB hard-drive, how in the seven hells am I going to get the space for 8GB? I'm not buying a new Xbox, there's no point when they're going next gen in a year.
  • I guess i must be the only one who thinks Halo is childish poopy. I play real games for real men, this game doesn't even has blood does it? Absolute cack.
  • @22 The 4GB model is specifically marketed towards people who don't plan to play the larger games. They aren't wasting people's time, they're giving a cheaper alternative to people who don't want to play the larger games.
  • get a HDD off eBay, that's what i did, got a 120G one for like £20
  • @54 you play real games for real men?! (Suppresses laughter) and your way of telling if a game is for a 'real man' is if there's blood in it? So Soldier of Fortume is the most mature and manly game ever created then is it? Two words my friend...grow up! OT: Don't think the 8GB install is that big a deal, though I bet everybody's feelings on this would be slightly different if it was published by EA, just a thought...
  • @57 Don't cry little boy because you enjoy childish games where you shoot people with 'pretty' pink spikes. The people who play this childish franchise need to grow up. Try The Witcher 2 boy, a game for real men.
  • @58. Lol the halo franchise is by far the least childish game ever. The gamers where young when it first started now they are older.Lots of young people don't play halo that much because of the easier pick up and play games like cod and the witcher . So go back to your lock on games and leave the men and women to battle it out on the halo field.
  • @58 no games are for real men, the clue is in the word 'game', now pick your knuckles up off the ground and slide on. Oh, as an aside, I've finished The Witcher 2, found it alright, not great, but I assume you think it's a game it's 'manly' (guffaw) because of the digital tits?..you're 14 years old aren't you!
  • @60 or maybe it has something to do with the mature complex storyline and the thought process put into making meaningful decisions, not like FLASHY BANG PINK SPIKE BOOOOOOOM. Lol, childish pathetic piece of shit you are.
  • @61 even
  • @62 please just shut up and go die in the hole you came out off. Thanks
  • Never thought I'd be hyped for a Halo game again but I must admit it's slowly happening.
  • @63, thank you! You have entertained me massively, every post is funnier than the last as you continue to display how desperately mature you are. One more thing,, don't worry, someday a real live (incredibly dumb) girl will let you touch her pink bits, and on that day you can tell her what a 'real man' you are because you don't play halo, because it's "poopy" Lololololol.
  • @66 I thought you would ignore the witcher 2 retort. You are a childish boy who plays games for little children. Pink spike PEW PEW PEW. PATHETIC.
  • @66 lmfao
  • Cant wait for this! The multiplayer should be epic!
  • HumanDestroyer is an inspiration. Why can't more people be like you? I will cancel my limited edition preorder for Halo 4.
  • @humandestroyer you think cancer is funny ?? w8 till some1 of your family dies of it and then we'll c if you think its funny then get a life stupid fuck
  • @71 I am glad i have inspired you and you have seen the light. @72 No i do not think it is funny at all, he said to me go die so it was purely a wishful statement i wish upon his mother.
  • @73 Not banned yet.... The mods must be very busy on this site.
  • @73 Don't worry. I was being sarcastic when I was sucking up to you. But someone's jimmies seem rustled. I think you should take a breather and shoot some good stuff up your arm. That's what a REAL man does, right? Call it a day.
  • making jokes of cancer...? you're sense of humor and comebacks are really childish and unnecessary man. anyways, Halo 4 will be awesome. cannot wait!
  • wtf! why not make a second disc (like ODST)
  • @75 REALLLY? I HAD NO IDEA YOU WAS BEING SARCASTIC.....
  • @76 It was not a joke, it was a genuine wish on his mother as he told me to go die.
  • I've got a 4gig slim with the 250 expansion HDD but microsoft really should market a 40 gig upgrade that's more cost effective for people not wanting to shell out another hundred bucks. They also should label this as needing 8 gigs of space for all the moms and pops buying it for their kids who may only have a slim.
  • joke or genuine intent, you're fucked up regardless and act like a child.
  • @81, but someone saying go die is acceptable aslong as they don't specify how? Your moral compass is fucked up boi.
  • @82, I love that your defence for saying that is that you genuinely meant it, and the fact that you don't even seem to comprehend that you've crossed a line, then there's also the fact that you wished it on his mother! That's pretty cold 'boi' and you've ceased to even be entertaining anymore, time for you to apologize and then go away quietly!
  • @80 why should they? you can get a 16gig thumbdrive for sub $15. there is no need for microsoft to enter the small storage market.
  • @83 He told me to go die, so i one upped him. It is how things work boi. It shut him up didn't it therego i win the argument. I am not defending what I said, I just don't want people o think i am joking about it when he told me to go die so i genuinely mean it and want his mother to develop it.
  • @85, seriously mate, seek help...
  • @85 Remember kids that's how a "real man" acts :)
  • I like how you people think it is acceptable to tell someone to go die aslong as you do not specify how. LOL MORALLY CORRUPT!
  • wow this sucks i need bigger hard drive since battlefield has took up lot on my memory no this will take more wtf not every1 has a 250Gb hard drive
  • Back on topic I have a 320gb MW3 console so I should be good can't wait for this game
  • Well that was an interesting argument. 8GB though, glad I got a new xbox my last one would have exploded off that.
  • for those of you complaining or saying its a scam fucking dragon age is a least 15gb even rage, max payne, and la niore have alot of GB and most ppl have a 250 or a 320 GB HDD coz the 250 is standard lol
  • How is it a scam 'Its a free update'
  • Looks like MS is going to have to do something about the 4GB model, can't imagine it flowing well with their biggest IP coming up with this news.
  • @85 You won the argument? LOL! When I read your posts, all I could think of was an eight year old kid cursing like crazy in the lobby of any CoD game. That is never a win, only a fail. Quit acting like a child and grow up.
  • @ 92 dragon age is 4.5 not 15 :P
  • Real men wish cancer upon peoples mother's, and if that is the case, I'd rather just stick to my xbox and play Toy Story or some shit like a child, because even though I'm 20 years of age, I wouldn't want to become the 'Man' that BlowUpDollDestroyer or whatever his name is.. #Douche
  • lot of hostility on here.
  • The game should come with a 8 GB USB stick, not everyone has that kind of space on their hard drive. Unlike me, I'll find space somewhere on my 320 GB.
  • I suppose I'll need a new HDD :P
  • Well, I might have to buy the 320 GB hardrive for this :C
  • Wow that is too much, well i understand the patches and updates. Its just like the PS3 that likes to hog every single GB. i have a 120GB hdd for the 360 with 65 games and half off the hdd used (including 20 arcade games, apps and all these DLC's especially 120 dl songs on Rock Band). on my ps3, 80 gig hdd with 12 games and just 7 gigs left.
  • looks like i'm not getting halo 4 any more because my hd does not have enough space.
  • Why it looks exactly the same as the last 4 games!!
  • Those of you complaining about not having space just buy a cheap usb, I bought a 16 gb HP for $15. If you don't want to pony up for the bigger HDD just get a cheaper USB, they're not very much at all! I just hope no one passes on this game just because of that (like #103)
  • @102: Dude if you're running out of space on your ps3 just buy a bigger SATA drive for it, they're much cheaper than an xbox proprietary drive. Anyway, OT: I'm stoked for this game :)
  • 8 gigs is nothing compared to some of the games for the pc, some can be around 15-20.
  • I can buy a 60Gb hard drive at my job for only $30. Why is there so much QQ over this?
  • @Human Destroyer Sweet Jesus, "man." Give it up and go away. I don't know what the fuck your problem is... Actually, I take that back - I don't know *which* problem is most prevalent. Anyway, please stop participating in anything that involves other people; you'll be doing us all a favor.
  • Hey guys... don't waste your energy with him. First of all... he's a troll (0 Forum Posts). Secondly... if he was a "real" man, he wouldn't be behaving as he does, wasting time with his rants - or hell... playing video games! No... his mother went out for a while, so he left the basement on got on her computer. Damn... I almost forgot what this topic was about! OT: To the poster who said you can't fit 8GB on a disc... I have a game that I installed in the last 6 months that takes up 7.9GB. I suspect that they can cram another .1GB on there! @18 I have a "Memory Master" brand 16GB USB flash drive, and it is fully-compatible with the Xbox 360. Not many flash drives were compatible when you could first use 1GB - 16GB as game storage, but it seems to be improving.
  • its halo so i dont care!
  • im still a little apprehensive, but im going to give this game a chance
  • 8GB's of awesomeness I can live with!
  • Maybe they should hurry up and announce a Halo 4 360 with a massive hard drive upgrade.
  • sigh i only have 8.3 gb
