Call of Duty: Black Ops II

E3 2012: Call of Duty: Black Ops II First Look Preview – Future Soldier

Modern Warfare? That's so old-fashioned, darling. This year is all about future warfare, and with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier providing a (disappointing) vision of the near-future earlier this year, it's Call of Duty's turn to explore the possibilities presented by the military tech of tomorrow. And the frightening scenarios that advancing technology brings to the table will be the backbone of Call of Duty: Black Ops II's narrative, which sees the son of Black Ops' Alex Mason fighting the good fight in 2025.

Our first look at Black Ops II picks up with David Mason riding in the back of an armoured vehicle with a bunch of political Washington types, including a critically injured Secretary of State and the US President herself (yes, her) and his buddies, as they roll down an LA freeway. The concept for Black Ops II's story is a 'what if?' situation that sees the bad guys – namely Raul Menendez and his expansive army - “stealing the keys” to the USA's army of drones, hacking them and turning the entire might of America's advanced armoury against the very people it's supposed to protect. After a bit of expository chatter, the convoy is soon attacked by some of these drones, as a helicopter spirals into the ground, a motorcycle cop pings off our windscreen and the vehicle flips and rolls across the freeway in the first of three intervals where the screen turns black before Mason's vision slowly returns. This is definitely Call of Duty then.

Based on our demo, Black Ops II seems like it's looking to out-CoD previous CoDs, with more explosive set-piece moments crammed into the space of about 15-minutes than we've seen in possibly any other FPS. Ever. Crawling out of the upturned truck, Mason dives onto a SAM turret mounted to an APC that's teetering dangerously over a fatal drop, launching a barrage of homing missiles at incoming drones, jumping from the vehicle before it falls. At the very last second, of course. Knocked back by an explosion, Mason lies face up as a drone closes in on him raining down cannon fire, exploding (at the very last second again, of course) and swooping mere feet away from his head.

Nary five minutes in, and our head's already swimming. There's certainly a lot to take in as you cross the freeway with your compadre, Harper (gruffly voiced by Michael Rooker) in tow. As a big rig speeds into the wrecked cars below the underpass, Mason switches to his high-powered sniper rifle boasting wavescan optics that enable you to see through walls. Packing electronically-charged ammunition, you're able to charge up each shot to increase its penetrative force meaning you can even shoot through concrete pillars and sheet metal. It's worth noting that you have a choice at this juncture too, with HUD markers pointing out where you can either snipe from the freeway or rappel down into the action, while protecting the US President.

Blasting his way through more enemy troops with a high-tech XM8 rifle, Mason finds his way into another armoured vehicle with Harper, and a driving section through the deserted cars and collapsing overpass ensues, leaving a line of Menendez's men as roadkill. Reaching a dead end where an allied F38 VTOL jet blasts a building, Mason is forced to emerge from the vehicle's roof hatch amid falling debris in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles, which has transformed into a full-blown warzone.

It's complete chaos (and sensory overload), as the police desperately try to restore some kind of order only to be coldly shot down while four-legged CLAWs (Cognitive Land Assault Weapon) keep Mason and Harper pinned down with minigun fire. Taking the walking war machines down with a rocket launcher, Mason pops a couple of grenades using his wrist-mounted touchpad, which also doubles as a GPS system and a control device for friendly quad-rotor drones (pressing up on the d-pad marks targets for the drones), before ducking into a shopping plaza.

On the other side of the shopping complex, there's more crashing and smashing scenery as the F38 from earlier bellyflops to the ground leaving Mason and Harper the task of securing the crash site. Here there's more major shock and awe, as skyscrapers explode and one topples over in an enormous cloud of billowing dust and debris. It's time for another blackout, with Mason's ears ringing as the audio fades back in and his vision returns once again. It's time to jump into the surviving F38 and take to the skies over LA for some dogfighting, despite Mason lacking any flying experience. In the future, anyone will be able to fly a fighter jet, apparently. And in case you're wondering, Treyarch is looking to inject Black Ops II with the most varied Call of Duty gameplay yet.

Taking off in the F38 VTOL, there's a lot of dangerous flying between buildings, dogfighting with drones and shooting down helicopters, while protecting the President's escort vehicle on the ground. Inundated by drones, Mason is forced to eject before he's wiped out in a head-on collision, which is where our demo ends. It's not over yet though, as Treyarch takes us through Black Ops II's brand-new Strike Force mode that presents players with missions that run parallel to the single-player campaign. In Strike Force, you're able to hot-switch between issuing commands and setting waypoints using the overwatch camera hovering over the battlefield, to classic boots-on-the-ground CoD FPS action.

It's a mode that combines strategy and good old-fashioned shootery, with you able to assume control of airborne drones and CLAWs, while seizing designated objectives on the map. On the Singapore Docks map we're shown, the mission involves planting hacking devices at control points marked as A and C, before taking over a missile at point B, all while enemy reinforcements pour in. You'll need to manage your resources to succeed, commanding your squad and making use of the technology at your fingertips. Ultimately, the mission is a success if you can launch the missile and guide it towards an enemy cargo ship, but should you fail, it'll count as a failure and affect the single-player campaign's ending.

Each Strike Force mission will tie into the story in this way, so complete failure or total success in all missions – or a mixture of success and failure – will be catalogued and ultimately determine the way in which the main narrative wraps up. It's a novel way of providing added impetus to delve into the Strike Force mode, although it looks like an exciting and interesting new non-linear sandbox mode that should offer something fresh beyond the core single-player, multiplayer and Call of Duty Zombies (yes, Zombies mode is back for Black Ops II and it's going to be “big”).

Treyarch wants to tell a “different kind of story” with Black Ops II, crafting a plausible near-future narrative with the consultation of author PW Singer, an expert in robotics and advisor to world leaders who foresees a future in which world powers engage in conflict over rare earth elements used in electronic devices. It's a bleak but entirely possible scenario given the fact that China possesses around 95 percent of the world's supply of these metals and minerals, and it serves as Black Ops II's backdrop. It won't all be near-future warfare however, as a third of the story will take place in the 1970s and 80s, picking up with Alex Mason, Viktor Reznov and a shock survivor from the first Black Ops.

With a huge emphasis on single-player with the campaign and Strike Force, Treyarch obviously isn't forgetting multiplayer and wants to evolve the experience, “challenging the assumptions” that players have when it comes to Call of Duty multiplayer. While Call of Duty: Black Ops II appears to be more of the same blockbuster action that players have come to expect, Treyarch looks to be pushing the envelope as much as it can without upsetting the winning formula that's made the series such an unstoppable powerhouse. But with such a wide variety of gameplay, Black Ops II might just be one of the most exciting Call of Duty games yet, which is no mean feat.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be running and gunning into stores on November 13th, 2012.

Great... what we need... more explosions to get people with short attention spans attention...

I like the premise of the game, but it wont work nearly as well as it could, because this is CoD, which means that it will devolve into its same old pattern of gameplay before long that's been resold every game since 4.

Being a Battlefield player myself, this actually looks really good, particularly the Strike Force missions and how they affect the single player campaign. The idea of Zombies set in the future also intrigues me, especially after Treyarch points out that it will be "big". But I won't get my hopes up too much as I don't want to be disappointed like the other COD games. I'll be waiting for a review first.

When I first saw the trailer for this game I thought it would be the end of CoD. Now I'm not sure why but this game is sounding like it might have some potential and hopefully they do what's right and make gameplay fair.

The problem with MW3 (partially BlOps) is that every.single.gun. is "balanced."

Why do you think that 90% of the people online use MP7s or ACRs? Because in a game where recoil is dominant, nothing kills quickly, and perks are literally a mixed bag... nothing will be fun.
I'm going to be honest with you; I'd rather play against a team of OMA/Danger Close pro-pipers in MW2 than a team of MP7s. It's just more fun/interesting.

I'm not pre-ordering this... but if I can see that multiplayer is fun again (or Zombies), I'll give it a chance. One last chance.

First Call of Duty game I will not ever play. Borderlands 2, Halo 4 and the WoW MoP expansion will take its place. All three of those games I feel will be better gaming time spent then playing Call of Duty.

Maybe I'm just a Treyarch "fanboy" but it truly seems to me like IW spits out a generic game made from the same old and dilapidated engine and Treyarch finds its way through the cracks and lines to throw new and more intuitive ideas onto the table. First it was zombies, then you had the contract system, you also have the purchase rather than unlock situation, face-paint, etc etc and now expanding that to decisions that you make that change the outcome of the game over multiple game modes and revamping what is already down pat formula. So maybe I'm a "fanboy" or maybe not but in the end I feel they make a game I can enjoy and that they personally deserve a commendable effort. However all of this will be put to the test come November.

'in the first of three intervals where the screen turns black before Mason's vision slowly returns'. They really need to stop doing this, its pathetic how many times people who've played all the CODs have to go through this predictable, annoying and embarrassingly unoriginal feature. No doubt each of these 3 instances also force you to walk slowy along a set path whilst you get pissed off hoping the game will hurry the fuck up and give you full conrol of the character again. Once every game is too much, but every iteration does it 4 or 5 times. Having said that, this looks pretty good and Im looking forward to hearing more about the new zombies.

I agree with @23 as well, so far my favourite CoD's are WaW and Blackops, They also seem to be the less retarded versions. TBH the reason I here most of the time when I ask a fanboy why he like MW more, the answer is usually because it is easier to quick scope...

I'm a CoD veteran of max prestige in multiple games and frankly, if one developer deserves one final chance to break the monotony and push the boundaries: It's Treyarch rather than Infinity Ward.

I'm actually not interested in this game at all. Treyarch is usually good about giving us what Infinity Ward dropped the ball on (except for the tired-ass zombies mode they focus on way too much). But it's really the setting of the game. This futuristic crap. Guess I'll buy Medal of Honor 2 instead.

I don't care for the amount of negative feedback I'm about to receive, so I'm going to state my honest opinion. Modern Warfare (the original) was the ONLY enjoyable Call of Duty title to play multiplayer wise, while all their stories are superb and thrilling, no other CoD has done anything to spark my interest, and although I've bought ever CoD title since then, none have the same type of playability that Modern Warfare did.

All in all, war-based FPS's are losing their touch and I am losing all care to purchase or even test the new ones out. Again, this is only my opinion so I understand if I get hate, but in the long run, we need more Xbox exclusives, creative IP's and less 'run-n'-gun/war-based' FPS titles.

CoD - Most over done franchise ever
Halo - Most overrated franchise ever

I've played every CoD, and will get this. I'm a campaign guy, and could care less (well, no, less that zero is zero) about MP. The last 2-3 have been the same game pretty much. Helicopter crashes, "controversial" segment, running and gunning. I'm fine with that, cause it's what I expect. Enjoyable, albeit short campaign. Zombie Mode... eh, gets boring really fast. Dug the Survival Mode in MW3 tho.

Halo... ODST was the only one I didn't want to smack kittens playing. The WORST campaign stories... just convoluted messes of meandering bullshit. Firefight Mode is fun, once you get around the shitty controls. Oh, I've played every Halo as well.

I say it's time BOTH of these franchises take a break... a good 5 year break. Puking out a game every year (CoD) is tired and boring. Make your fans MISS you, and get truly excited about a new game. Even 2 years between titles would make things seem fresher. Oh, and a new engine would be nice too (CoD and Halo). Same old same old.

@ 23 - Them ideas arent inovation, they're mearly bells and whistles painted on the same formula (most of which come from other games). Don't get me wrong some of them did add to the game, but to list a few modes and superficial things like soldier customization as inovative is pretty lame. And the currency system in blops was BS and pointless, why the need for two currency systems?? (xp and COD points) That doesn't add anything physical or tactical to the game, if anything its just making COD more like farmville.

OT: never get excited about COD anymore, but always try and keep an open mind and i still really enjoy the no brains micheal bay single player

I just hope this time when I play Black Ops the gameplay doesn't feel like i'm holding a toy gun vs the other CoD's.

@Goldyman77 - you do know that IW came up with the engine initially with CoD4 MW, right? Treyarch then borrowed it for WAW and Black Ops.

@48 Why? People are allowed to have opinions, even negative ones. If no one speaks up about how bad the CoD games are getting (some of them anyway) then Activision will continue to spew out the same crap year after year. I'd rather they take a 2-3 year break and work on something that will be REALLY special.

@66 They should do that in a constructive way , publishers and developers don't care for the childish, "this game sucks" comment. It doesn't offer an details on what exactly needs to be fixed. Its rather pathetic to go online, click on an article about a game you don't like, read it and then post immature hateful comments about it. It doesn't do anything but piss off the players who care about it. If you want to go hate on a game go make your own thread/blog about it. Keep the comment sections clean for the fans or the mildly interested.

OT: Single-player sounds interesting, need to see some MP footage though.

@43, Halo is the most over-rated game ever? Well seeing as it's one of the few Xbox exclusives it should be hyped up to what it is. Plus, if you've played all of them and still stand by your belief that they are overrated than I don't even know what to say. Halo's story-line is one of the most in-depth games I've ever played. It's not overrated, it's brilliant.

@majority of above posts

Seems most of you have already played it too :D

seriously though, i'll wait til it comes out and i play it before i find myself passing judgement, though admittedly, i do share the doubt in this title, mainly because of the Call of Duty tag attached, it most likely will be the same thing as previous years only a bit prettier. I never even got into zombies mode yet, bring back WW2, i loved that era of CoD

Call Of Duty Black Ops 2 Meets Ghost Recon Future Soldier haha!
Anyways its good they try something new and yes there is that pesty flying drone the always get us "Detected" in MP in Ghost Recon lol!
I can def imagine for those that loved and enjoyed Black Ops this will be awesome news, i played it aswell and i be totaly honest here, the campaign wasn,t bad but why oh why did they need to add those unlimted spawn enemies points i just mention the "Control Room" part in the single player, that was terrible! So dear developers from Black Ops 2 please spare us with those unlimited spawns from enemies.

I'm fine with a CoD coming out every year, but would be cool is if there were 3 developers. 1 CoD game a year that took 3 years to develop every time. And with 3 different developers I have no doubt that they would all be very different.

I personally can't wait for BO2. It sucks that it comes out almost the same time as Halo 4.

Just an FYI, the Call of Duty franchise purposely make mistakes and hold back their ideas for they can use them in the next game and saw it's "better".

I honestly think Halo is shit, and full of little kids, but I will say I would rather play that than this Call of Duty shit where all these kids learn nothing, but run around shooting like stupid jackasses, the FPS genre deserves to die out, and is basicly overated. Fuck Call of Duty, Last good CoD was WaW, and 4 was good too, all the rest were shit, so I have no plans on buying this.

This game is going to sell well and its going to be better then any FPS before it, but haters going to hate and 1-2 more COD's from now Activision will kill the whole genre.

Battlefield will never make the money COD has or fan base and BF fan boys will forever wonder(and argue) why.

And we can all hope another typeseries of games can intreage us the way COD has.

The story looks interesting ad definately different from past iterations, so that's good for me. I agree with a previous post tho that treyarch versions feel like a toy game compared to MW series but they are still goo nonetheless. My biggest beef with black ops was how buggy and glitchy it was, the story was good and the setting was very different from w@w and MW.

The only thing that is seriously bugging me I the colours, why oh why do treyarch always go for dark pallets? I've looked everywhere for a splash of colour from black ops 2 and all I've found is orange, brown, grey an a mixture of the 3 previous colours.....seriously treyarch a bit of colour makes a world of difference. Mw2 is the most beautiful lookin of all the CoD games

i believe this one will be at least decent, but my only hope for this game is that they eventually release every zombies map to date for this game, then it would definitely be a keeper, i'm also glad to see so many good games coming out from september to december (tekken, borderlands 2, re6, doom 3 bfg edition, forza, ac4, halo 4, hitman, black ops 2, etc)

If people are going to bitch about a game why come on this post, it's like going onto a dance central forum and crying about it.

Millions of people like the game and millions of copies will be sold by the people trying to act clever about colours throwing their cash at it, after all it seems hilarious that so many people complain about it yet it's one of the best selling games.

Anyhoo to change the topic, Zombies!!!

You have to laugh at the haters that take the time to rant about a game they hate and have no interest in. Do they expect they will get other people to agree with them (excluding the other haters that are also doing the same thing)?

I don't care for the "Gears of War" franchise... but I never go into the forums or threads for those and start bashing it. Some people love those games, and that's their choice!

I really don't care for the multi-player part of [most] games. Co-op, yes (and campaign, of course... otherwise, I wouldn't touch it at all)! I liked the "Black Ops" campaign... that was really interesting. I passed on MW3, since it was focused on MP... and I never heard ANYONE I know, talk about how great the campaign is. I'll probably pick-up "Black Ops II" - for the campaign, but the studio should not wait so long to put each of the map packs on sale for it (I am EAGERLY awaiting the half-price sale of all the DLC for the first Black Ops... so I'll finally be able to play it with my friends - IF any of them still are)! Let's kill zombies!!!

COD 1 = solid WWII shooter

COD 2 = Expanded from COD 1, good online multiplayer

COD 3 = Improved from COD 2, liked the vehicle selection in multiplayer and maps good size and variety

COD 4 = No longer WWII, online multi-player amazing. introduced perks, new ranking system and class customisation. Also good variety of maps. (M16 and juggernaut only two flaws I can think of with multi-player as I thought they where over powered)

COD 5 = Finishing WWII, online multi-player different to COD 4 re-introduced Tanks. Zombie mode very good edition. Some maps maybe too big. (MP40 over powered and second chance was annoying in S&D from what I played). I think if this game came out before COD 4 it would have been bigger maybe.

COD 6 = Sequel to COD 4 modern warfare. Expanded well on COD 4 added spec ops which was fun. Online multi-player was good but it was all about kill streaks. This meant player skill didn't have to be as high to do well, due to the kill streaks. It was good at the start of playing online but then people boosted for nukes using tactical inserts which was annoying. Also scavenger/claymore combo was annoying until update where only 2 claymore were aloud. Pro versions of perks good addition it made people use a variety of perks. Removing stopping power also good. Secondary weapons annoying but good try. (Famas overpowered and UMP crazy from what I played. Models 1887 used to be and Spaz 12 unbelievable range also stabbing distance with perks annoying)

COD 7 - Black ops. Zombies!!! what happened. I wasn't a fan of the new zombie maps. Good to try in doing something different with the zombies were you couldn't camp but I wasn't a fan, to much going on (I know other people may have the opinion the change was good). Multi-player online, finally two people can play off of one console. The amount of times me and a mate wanted to play and could only play one at a time (halo 3 allowed 4 off one console which was great). Kill streaks again wasn't a fan of, there pretty much the same as COD 6. Gun game etc... was a good edition. (Can't remember any of the gun flaws because didn't play a lot of COD 7 due to playing COD 6 still with mates) Also call signs improved.

COD 8 - Sequel to COD6. Player skill at an all time low. More kill streaks!!! you can now die and still get streaks WTF??? Not many sniper maps (not sure about the add-on map packs as haven't really played them). Map variety not good in my opinion. Mainly keep same flaws as COD 6 & 7. Survival mode good addition.

5 simple ways to improve COD in my opinion -

Everyone has the same kill streaks progression(3 kills, 5 kills, 7 kills and 10 kills then stop.) and then have different classes of kill streaks depending gun used e.g. 3 kills with SMG = UAV, Three kills with Assault rife = counter UAV etc...

Next no more guns. only have extra guns if they are different to all the others. Playing COD 6 & 7 mainly it felt that most assault rifes were the same.

Maps - simple make a variety in size and openness. This will then accommodate for all weapon classes.

Quick-scoping - How is it skill when 90% of games have someone quick-scoping. get rid. (to counter the loss of quick scope make snipers one shot kill for bolt actions and 1/2 shot for semi auto depending on where it hits)

Drop shot - Make it so when your crouching you cannot shoot at the same time.

Please give feedback these are mainly my opinions. Be interesting to know what others think.

That's not a bad assessment of the COD games. I never played MP after COD4 (I actually played quite a bit of MP on COD4, second only to Halo 2)!

I'm guessing you left out the fact that MP sucked in COD2 when it first launched, because after a HUGE amount of complaints... the patched it - then it was good!

Personally, I'd rather see these COD developers go a completely different route... and have actual wars online - something a little more realistic, where you are part of a nation in a battle for territory, and you have to defend or attack as necessary, to gain or keep from losing cities to win the war. Chromehounds was a GREAT example of this (except you were in mechs, or "hounds" when you fight). Each team would be part of a division, squad, etc.... and you could either play against humans - gaining (or losing) more points in a territory, or maybe a "firefight mode," where you play against a set number of waves of AI players, and probably not gain (or lose) as much points in a territory.

These "wars" could last for days or even weeks... depending on the balance of players, and how well they do. There could be just 2 sides (nations), or 3 (like in Chromehounds) - or maybe have 2 nations, but two different battlefronts - one on land, the other over water... and one nation has to win on BOTH fronts to win the war.

This is just a thought (and a game-play style I could sink my teeth into)!

I should probably suggest this to the makers of the COD franchise (or Battlefield franchise - except that EA tends to shutdown servers at the drop of a hat - which also happened to Chromehounds, even though it wasn't an EA title).

"Call of Duty: Battlefront" - it has a nice ring to it!!! ;-)

I didn't buy MW3 out of principle that MW2 was so bad online. I will be getting this though, Cod5 and Black Ops were very good, although 5 was better in my opinion. Treyarch CoD's are more for people who are actually good at the game, rather than run around with dual shotguns (which in real life would blow your arm off) and many other reasons why CoD since MW2 has become the dirtiest online game of all time.
Despite this, I will buy it and if it is terrible I won't get another on every again. And before you say anything, I had a ratio of 5 on mw2 but it was still terrible, like MW3 - my God that game was a piece of s***

It is true, that CoD is just not as interesting anymore, since it comes out every year. But there is one great thing about them, that hasnt been mentioned, yet. The CoD games still have the good old offline split-screen MP mode. Black Ops was a bit dissapointing, though. Why do you already have everything unlocked and can only play 10 min rounds? But all in all that is one of the main reasons, why I still get the CoDs.

@91 i agree with the quick scoping. Get rid of it. Great summery.
Don't think I'm getting this one or maybe when it's a budget game. Didn't like mw3 to much and multiplayer was somewhat same old same old. As I said somewhere else, this is looking a lot like the yearly sports games, same game new names. Let's go for something totaly different. If that's even possible.

I'd hate to say it but this is going to be what Ghost Recon should have been. Since its TREYARCH and not IW, i know the mechanics won't blow. If i shoot, I'll actually hit something. Seeing warfare like this will definitely bring a new spin to a stale series...if its done correctly of course. Might as well buy it (for me), Gotta see where the campaign goes!
