Gears of War: Judgment

Cliff Bleszinski: Maintaining Game Franchises is Like “Creating Your Own Religion”
Written Thursday, June 21, 2012 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

Cliff Bleszinski believes that developers are under increasing pressure to provide a constant stream of sequels and transmedia content for big franchises, in order to keep their fans engaged.

Indeed, the Epic Games Design Director told X360A that, “It’s almost like you’re not creating fans, you’re creating your own religion over your franchise.”

Bleszinski told X360A that he isn’t concerned about Gears of War suffering from franchise fatigue, despite Gears of War: Judgment representing the fourth title in the series since 2006.

“We’re not annualizing right now or any time soon,” he said, “but we figure that there’s room for a great prequel that has great feature parity with previous Gears games within this time frame. Sooner or later it’ll be time to move on to the next consoles and we want to make sure we have one last Gears game in here.”

However, he does feel that developers are under increasing pressure to keep their franchises in the limelight.

“Industry wide, you’re looking at a world in which a game every two years for some developers is actually… they worry because in our ADD generation we’re going to forget about it,” he said.

“So you’re seeing Dragon Age animated shorts put out because there’s been no Dragon Age game announced recently. They want to remind people about this IP. ‘Love it and work on your cosplay, because there’ll be more down the line,’ right?

“It’s almost like you’re not creating fans, you’re creating your own religion over your franchise.”

Bleszinski recently told X360A that games are getting “easier and more linear.” So with Gears of War: Judgment the Epic and People Can Fly collaboration is dialing up the challenge.

Gears of War: Judgment is out next year. You can read out latest preview here.

It's funny, because this guy is commenting on a game that he has barely anything to do with.

He must just be trying to raise publicity.

I am looking forward to this game! However, I don't feel like there will be any game as great as Gears 3 until the next gen consoles come out... then the devs will definitely make more graphics/gameplay changes, and have room to expand their horizons.

I like to hear games being released years apart, even though we desperately wait for the next one after completing 1 part.

@1

That's a little unfair, I'd say. He designed the series, he laid down the blueprint, and now he's collaborating with People Can Fly to make Judgment. That's a pretty heavy involvement.

Epic still has a sizable part in Judgement (MP + Overrun), PCF is also technically a "part of Epic"... just under a different name.

@1 Great job trolling Cliff Blezinski and completely ignoring the valid points that he is raising.

Like him or not, He knows the industry. And he is well aware of how it works. Both good and bad.

Yeah so explore different avenues and provide different experiences don't just bring us the same game mechanics again and again, there was a real chance with this game to provide something different.

How about they ACTUALLY work on maintaining the ruddy game that came out last year?!? The Gears of War 3 "event ribbon" situation is completely unacceptable, because they just "can't" fix it!

@11 So you read the article?

"the Epic Games Design Director told"

Do you know the definition of the word design, do you now what the job of a Director is? Directors are heavily involved with what they are directing. He is the Director of the designing process for EP's products. Design is a major variable to making anything.

Still waiting for my good Gears sequel. Instead of game sequels made by stubborn babies with deflated egos that people enjoyed playing their game in a way they didn't envision.

So the only natural thing to do when you have a very popular game developers got lucky with and took off massively.. and that's systematically rip it apart and take away all that made it fun.

The fact Cliffy is still not satisfied with how prevalent the shotgun is after all they did in Gears 3 is plain pathetic. I don't know blind he is but the more of these that come out the more I begin to despise my favourite game. Really not looking forward to this at all, too soon to gears 3 and some awful decisions already. Not even Baird being the main focus can salvage it so far...

@12 Yes, I read the whole article. The Epic Games designer. The new Gears game isn't being developed/designed by Epic Games. Do YOU know the definition of developing and designing?

I think the only pressure to put out a sequel so soon is from the publishers. Fans can easily wait 2 years for a sequel, even if they dont want to wait that long at first. If people enjoy the game then they will remember it. Make a good game and you wont have a problem. Hell, even mediocre and bad games will be remembered by some, even for good reasons.

Why is it so bad if we forget about Gears? Will the world have ended? Will CliffyB somehow have made less money? Just because you aren't remembered doesn't mean you didn't deliver entertainment to people. Just because people forget you doesn't mean you never impacted their lives.

Developers need to build a fucking bridge and get over the damn river they've cried for themselves.

@16 He has a huge part in the last three gears and is probably contributing massively with Judgement even though Epic is not the main developer.

OT: Can't agree more with him... Just look at CoD and BF3...

games are getting easier and more linear. also unimaginative and dumbed down. because conveyer belt development has taken over from innovation or labours of love. hell if I wanted my games more linear I'd watch soap operas.

@16 Epic owns People Can Fly, so yea, Epic has a hand in the development and design. Plus, I doubt Epic just handed PCF a Gears game and don't have anyone over-seeing the project and contributing to the design of the game.

Yeah, and then when all the bad guys are dead, you go back in time and OMFGPREQUELSALSKD:A (Translation: We ran out of story, so here's some prequel to keep you paying for our stuff. Also, 5 different pre-order bonuses and nearly $70 worth of weapon skins!@#@$)

I also have a feeling we'll be seeing another Unreal Tournament before we see another Gears on the next console.

@16 Here is a sentence from the other article this site posted on the 19th titled

E3 2012: Gears of War: Judgment Preview – Prepare to Sweat!

"The title is being developed by majority owned studio Epic studio, People Can Fly, in collaboration with Epic themselves and is currently scheduled for a 2013 release."

Okay so you were saying what exactly? That you were wrong on both counts? Yes, yes you were.

Were you right about two things? Yes, yes. Good for you. I hope you enjoy your gold star.

Now can people please stop being a bunch of assholes? :x

i love how once Gears 3 came out we never seen or heard this douche, it was all Rod Fergusson for the last year, while cliffy was telling us how great SKyrim was on twitter every night, now a new game is coming out and they throw their mascot out there to act like hes actually in charge of anything, this isnt being made by the same development team.

so thats another reason why using him is a joke cause everyone is going to expect Gears 1-3 quality, when its going to turn out to be the Treyarch version of the Gears series, not the IWgoodlooking

@38 Your definition of asshole must be different than mine. Because I'm the one actually being calm and collected, listening to your opinions, and not thumbing down.

I think Cliff is annoying, and always will. The point about Skyrim was very valid. He's like Epic's mascot. :/

But whatever, if you people want to be assholes, I can't say I'm surprised. It's just how this site is.

I've often thought about games being easier and spoken to friends about it, while many are easier its not always the case. However having now been gaming for just over 24 years my skill at games must have improved since I first started, surely its the same for some of you guys too

@31 Well you shouldn't be making comments like that if you haven't read the other articles then. You don't have all the facts. Plus common sense would tell you that if he is talking about Gears: Judgment then he has to have some involvement in the game.
