Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012)

Criterion Not Finished with Burnout Series
Written Tuesday, June 19, 2012 By Lee Bradley

What with Criterion's latest endeavours, you could be forgiven for thinking that the developer has abandoned Burnout for good. But that's not the case.

The last Burnout instalment hit in 2008, with Criterion transporting the speedy series into an open world and showering it with DLC support. It was fantastic, but since then EA has had the studio working on other projects.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was released in 2010 and spin-off Burnout Crash! kept the brand busy last year. Both games were different enough to stand apart from the main line of Burnout titles. However with Need for Speed: Most Wanted, announced at this year's E3, Criterion moves perilously close to their previous work.

So does Most Wanted spell the end for Burnout? Not at all, says Criterion. Pressed on the subject at E3 this year, Senior Producer Matt Webster said, "No, of course, not. That's not going anywhere."

Indeed, the studio is now pushing their blistering brand of racing even further. While discussing Most Wanted's open-world, Webster said, "It's bigger than Paradise, but it's difficult that one. It's not necessarily about the square meterage or whatever... There's much more drivable surface in here than we've ever done before though."

So not only can we look forward to more Burnout games, Most Wanted is also sounding pretty damn exciting. Good news all around!

You can read our preview of Need for Speed: Most Wanted here. It's out on October 30th in North America and November 2nd in Europe.

Didn't Burnout Crash release on XBLA last year? Shouldn't that have been an indication the series was still going?

Burnout Paradise 2, Burnout Paradise 2, Burnout Paradise 2! If I say it enough times into a mirror, it should happen.

In proper English, "instalment" utilises the solitary "L".

Seems to be far too common these days, the use of American English.

Just kidding, but seriously, it needs fixin'

I've been wanting a sequel to Paradise since the last DLC for the game. Hopefully that's up next after this NFS.

First I heard this NFS will be open world, I'll give it a look now, didn't have an interest in it until I read that.

Burnout Paradise still looks and plays tons better than all the NFS garbage from the last few years and that's a game from 2008!

They should have stuck with it instead of moving to this Cod-like annual NFS garbage.

The Burnout Revenge servers (for Xbox 360) ARE BACK ONLINE! It was only down for about two weeks. If you don't believe me... just pop-in the game and have a look. Be sure to look at the "Top 20 Clips" - before June 25th 2012 - while you're at it!

I know that the EA web site says it was shutdown in April, but they are currently online (as of this writing). I don't know how long the servers will be online. If ANYONE needs help getting some of the online achievements, you'd better get busy. I'm still helping people get the "Most Wanted!" achievement. Send me a message over Xbox LIVE (NOT a FR), if you need help!

Who the fuck is Gary Barlow? That's a rhetorical question. Since I obviously don't know... it should be a no-brainer to you #17, that I don't give a shit who that is (or you, for that matter)!

Stop troll posting and making comments that are irrelevant to forums!

I am letting people know the Burnout Revenge servers are back online (and offering to help anyone who needs it), since you are posting misinformation... then you fall-back to your usual pranks. Go crawl back under your rock!

Wish they'd just take the Paradise engine and remake Burnout 3 with it. Best licensed game soundtrack ever!

Sorry, Arron. The next time you want to compliment someone... just be straight forward! I also don't know what OBE means, either. I'm not 14 years old (and I'm not saying that you are)... but all these abbreviations people use AND expect EVERYONE to know what they are is ignorant! Please don't bother telling me what OBE means... if it was important that I know, I already would.

@22
Burnout 3: Takedown DID have a good soundtrack! I think that starting song still fits these kids today - the lazy generation!! :-p

I've been campaigning for Criterion to port Burnout 3 to the 360 (not just backwards compatible - we already have that... worthless without online play). I pushed a few buttons at EA about the servers for Burnout Revenge... don't know if the return of it was my doing, or that combined with other people and their efforts. I'm still pushing Burnout 3!!!

@3 As good as that game was, we're seeing too many "remakes" nowadays. Unless its a remake of a game on an old console like the megadrive or something, i really don't see the point

Its stands for Order of the British Empire. its an award off the Queen like a knighthood but lower down. And Gary Barlow is some pop artist who has done charity work and also organised the cobcert for the diamond jubilee.

Id love a new burnout but not open world. I loved burnout 2 to revenge

Ahh... that would mean Arron is probably in (or from) the UK, and this Gary Barlow must be as well (I don't pay much attention to pop stars here in the U.S., and I know less about the ones in the UK - though I have heard of "Adele..." great voice)! I did a search into OBE, and the first result I got was "Out of Body Experience" - which, if it were a recommendation, I wouldn't know if it were an insult or a compliment... but it made me laugh.

I prefer #29's explanation, though my info on the Burnout Revenge servers is not worthy of such a bestowing. I hope that anyone who still wants to play BR online will find out while the servers are still up!

Burnout Revenge basically IS Burnout 3 Takedown remastered for the 360.

However, its missing some keys elements that made Burnout 3 the BEST of all the Burnouts. WE ARE THE LAZY GENERATION! Man, I played the hell out of that game on Xbox 1.

@32 - Burnout Revenge WAS made originally for the Xbox and they remastered it to work on the 360. I happen to own both versions and the regular xbox version was much better than the 360 version. Takedown was never ported over to the 360.

Happy that Burnout hasn't disappeared under the NFS Brand as on the whole I've found the Burnout franchise to be much more fun. Was waiting for news on Paradise 2 but this NFS sounds like it'll do for now.

On a side note, this thread is Facepalm gold.

I absolutely loved Burnout 3: Takedown, because of the detail in crashing. I thought Revenge was ok but didn't like Paradise at all. Skeptical that they will return to the awesomeness that was Takedown. They are a one-song wonder imho
