E3 2012: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC Hands-On Preview – The Vampire Diaries

I personally, genuinely haven’t played Skyrim since before its release last year. After 130 hours in 10 days, I completely drained myself and couldn’t spend a minute longer with the game – it was like overindulging myself with a 60oz rib-eye steak in one sitting and needing a break from it. E3 2012 marked my return to the plains of Tamriel and like any return to a classic game, it just seems like there’s never enough time.

Dawnguard is Bethesda’s first piece of Skyrim DLC and is set to offer 10-15 hours worth of gameplay for 1600 Microsoft Points. We picked up proceedings around three and a half hours into the game, moments after completing the quest, 'Chasing Echoes'. At this point of the game, we’ve assisted Serana in opening a portal to another dimension, to a place called Soul Cairn.

Soul Cairn is a dark and miserable place, with plenty of land and a lot of nothingness. The eerie feel of the huge open plains is nothing like we’d experienced in Skyrim thus far and as a mere mortal, there’s a lot of ground to cover to get to the castle main gate to speak to Serana’s mom, Valerica. Good job we can turn into the Vampire Lord then, huh?

The Vampire Lord can not only easily dispatch the Boneman and Wrathmen with sublime ease with its strong melee attack, but they can also move at a rate of knots too as they effectively hover across the plains. Combine that with their special moves and they can be a formidable force. Using the Bats shout, the Vampire Lord can essentially transform into a colony of bats to move quickly from one location to another. Great for evading. Using the Summon Gargoyle shout, the Vampire Lord can call in a powerful ally. And finally, using the Vampire Grip shout, the Vampire Lord can suspend foes in mid air and drain them of heath.

The main, and only, real mission we were able to complete during our hands-on with Dawnguard was a task for Valerica, who asked us to dispatch three Keepers found at various stone structures located around Soul Cairn. In order to perform such a feat, Valerica gives the player an Elder Scroll, which antagonist, Harken needs – along with Serena’s blood – to become all-mighty and powerful. Whether the circumstances in the demo mirror the actual final content remains to be seen, as it was recently rumoured that you either become a Vampire Lord or get a crossbow, depending on the side you choose. In this demo, we had both, but that might have been intentional on Bethesda’s part to show off all the facets of the new expansion.

Switching to the Vampire Lord form we covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time to stand at the base of an abandoned castle-esque structure. Bumping into a Keeper was a little trickier than we’d imagined it would be, especially after making such quick work of the Bonemen and Wrathmen around the plains. The Vampire Lord, however, isn’t possibly the greatest form to take on these huge beasts, namely because the Vampire Lord’s melee is no match for the Keepers. It was a case of reverting to human form again and whipping out the quick-firing crossbow. It’s a matter of keeping your distance then and taking pot shots to whittle the Keeper’s health down. It’s elementary my dear, Watson. It was then a case of rinse and repeat with the other two Keepers, with one being at the top of a tower requiring use of a portal to get to. Unfortunately, before we could speak to Valerica to end the mission, our time was up.

The Bethesda rep on hand was also keen to point out that Dawnguard was like the main Skyrim game itself and littered with side quests and random encounters galore.

30 minutes at a trade show is usually enough to get in, get your content for a preview and get out, before sprinting like a horse on crack to your next appointment. 30 minutes with Dawnguard flew by and we could have done with another hour or two to really get a feel for what may come. That, my friends, is the sign of a good game though. Always leave 'em wanting more, right?

The world of Soul Cairn might be a miserable place with nowhere near as much beauty as Tamriel itself, but that doesn’t make Dawnguard any less fun. The crossbow is immensely enjoyable to wield, as is floating around as the Vampire Lord and taking advantage of his specific shouts. And with 10-15 hours of gameplay – which is essentially what many games offer for full retail price these days – it’s shaping up to be a bit of a steal for $20.

Skyrim’s Dawnguard DLC has a tentative release date of June 26th and will set you back a mere 1600 Microsoft Points.

Vampires, again? Can't they think of something original? They've been putting vampires and werewolves in every TES game since Morrowind, at least.

Really looking forward to playing this. Just started a new character to get myself back into the game. I really want to know what the achievements for this are though, I can't find a list anywhere. You would think someone in the beta would have revealed it by now...

Dunno what you're talking about. Morrowind added in werewolves again and vampires have always been present. Oblivion didn't have werewolves nor were they ever added in except on PC with mods. Your comment makes you sound as if you haven't actually played the games. Werewolves and vampires are part of the lore of the series, of course they should be represented somewhere and this DLC serves to flesh them out a bit more.

Why do people say stuff like " I don't know what side to pick"? We all have more than one character and we are all going to do it at least twice so why?

@10 I only have one character, just pointing that out. Although I do get what you mean but I think everyone else is deciding who they will go through first.

OT: I honestly can't wait for this. Does anyone know if you're already a vampire can you join the Dawnguard?

Of course my main character, level 72, is a werewolf and i missed my chance to change back. I thought it was a good idea since werewolf WAS better than vampire, but now i seriously regret it...

Never really gotten into TES games, although I realize they are excellent games. I like Bethesda's take on less but larger DLC packs. Why spend (on average) 800 - 1200 MSP on anywhere from 1 -4 hours of additional play, where for 400 more points you get an enormous piece of DLC? Hats of to Bethesda.

@ 12:

Unless you somehow wasted or lost 4 Glenmoril Witch Heads you can still cure yourself of Lycanthropy.

You just need to take one of those Witch heads back to the tomb where you cured the other guy.

I only have one character and I'm a level 30 werewolf, don't know if you can be a Vampire Lord and a werewolf at the same time (I really hope so but I doubt it). I don't have the time to make a second character and get it levelled up though :/ dunno if I will bother shelling out 1600 points for something I won't get the good of fully.

It kind of sucks, though, as I've always hated vampires and werewolves.

I certainly hope you can still get the achievements with a maxed out character, because I won't get the dlc if I have to put in another 200 hours just to get to where I was. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of TES. It is one of my favorite game series, and I can't think of a better single-player experience than I had in Morrowind. But I'm not quite prepared to completely sell my soul to Bethesda. :) Not to mention, I still need to play Batman Arkham Asylum, Gears 3, the last Assassin's Creed, and Red Dead Redemption.

I wouldn't call 1600 points a lot for a piece of DLC longer than most retail games, and it has two storylines as well. Think of it this way, you can buy this or you could bend over for Turn 10 and spend the same for 15 versions of a Porsche 911 in Forza for the same price...

Very excited for this DLC but in the 2nd picture the enemies are just run-of-the-mill draugr and skeletons (at least aesthetically). If Beth are just gonna give old enemies new names and stats I will be very pissed off. I have played Skyrim for over 150 hours and fought every type of creature in the game bar the end boss within the first 25 hours and I was hoping the first DLC would have new enemies to freshen up the game a bit. I hope I am wrong.

There are gonna be new enemies such as: gargoyles, and legendary dragons.

Bethesda really tries to bring complete dlc packages, with new items, shouts, enemies, locations etc.

It seems like a lot of people still haven't really looked into this. Becoming a Vampire Lord will cure you of Lycanthropy; Bethesda has mentioned this in a couple different spots. It's impossible to the a Werewolf and a Vampire Lord at the same time. Also, to increase your perk trees for the Vampire Lord/Werewolf, you use your abilities: Vampire Lords kill people using their Drain Life skill, and Werewolves devour corpses. Even maxed out characters can fill the perk trees without having to level up once. This has also been stated in a couple different places.

I promise I'm not trying to be a douche bag; just trying to clear a few things up that I keep seeing everywhere.

And 1600 MS points for a DLC pack that's longer than the main storyline of Fable 2, that I paid $60 for? That's a heck of a steal right there. $20 is considerably less than $60. Also, your experience will be different depending on the side you choose. In essence, that's a good 30-40 hours for 2 playthroughs to see both sides. And it's only $20. Seriously, that's more than reasonable. The Shivering Isles for TES IV: Oblivion is still 2400 MS points...

#45 made a great point. The price of this DLC is longer than a lot of games, and we are lucky to only be charged 1600msp for it. The achievement list mentioned earlier does look fairly easy, and that's another 250g coming my way. Now, if I could only stop playing Minecraft first.
