Molyneux Outlines His Fears for the Future of Consoles, Says Microsoft “Obsessively” Watch Sony

Reflecting on this year’s E3, former Microsoft Game Studios Europe creative director Peter Molyneux has revealed his concerns about the next generation of consoles and expressed his “shock” at Microsoft’s lack of focus on their PC gaming efforts.

He also said that the Xbox team “obsessively” follows what Sony is doing with the PlayStation platform.

“I would hope the next generation would bring about a new wave of innovation,” he said. “If we don’t do that in consoles, then you will find that those people that want innovation will start retreating to other formats.

“Look at the PC,” he continued. “It’s incredible to me how there’s been a resurgence in PC gaming. There’s a lot more innovation now.”

“I think that’s the other thing about the Microsoft press conference. It’s always shocked me about how little Microsoft cared about the Windows platform. There was hardly a single talk about Windows 8 at all. You would’ve thought, with a billion installed machines, there would be at least some play. And the whole metro interface is much more gamified, but there was no talk about it at all.”

The problem, says Molyneux, isn’t just Microsoft’s. All the console manufacturers will face new challenges with their next generation of hardware.

“It’s going to be an interesting problem for all the console manufacturers I think. It’s because so much computer entertainment is spreading and diversifying over so many different platforms,” he said.

“They no longer have the luxury of keeping us all funneled into these consoles. A whole lot of manufacturers in the industry have been in a luxurious position for so long, where they could restrict the entertainment content to the masses.

“They did a very good job of squeezing the PC out and making this just about three formats and now it feels like it’s sand dripping through their fingers. It’s escaping from them.”

Molyneux recently left Microsoft to found indie outfit 22 Cans. At the time he said he felt like he was being “creatively suffocated.”

  • I think these are the first true words out of his mouth. For once I take my hat off to you sir.
  • It's Microsoft's own fault if they lose in the console market. Almost all their R/D and advertising is focused on the casual audience, and trying to integrate your games with shitty peripherals and apps. True words from Peter Molyneux shows the end is nigh.
  • What is this??? No over-hyping and things that actually makes sense! Aliens have replaced Molyneux with a clone, the apocalypse is upon us, run, RUN!!!
  • 'He also said that the Xbox team “obsessively” follows what Sony is doing with the PlayStation platform.' Well, that's just smart IMO. You'd have to be an idiot not too want to know as much as possible about your competition. I'm sure Sony and Nintendo do exactly the same thing. When I was reading I was expecting there to be something egotistical in there but there wasn't really. Quite surprised.
  • I read the words of a smart man but then see the picture and think he doesn't look all there, reminds me of Stephen hawking in a way
  • @3 Your opinion is inadmissable because you are clearly Peter Molyneux :) Sorry to disagree with everyone (and believe me Im often wrong) but i think this is all bollocks. For a start I think it has been made obvious by the general appathy for kinect, that the public dont necessarily want innovation. COD wouldnt sell by the millions if the industry was about to go tits up through lack of innovation. I think the bulk of consumers actually want bigger, better versions of the games/genres they already like. Please forgive me for my ignorance here but what are these innovative PC titles that Mr M speaks of? To me this all just sounds like a bitter little man trying to get revenge on his former bosses and the console industry in which he became a laughing stock. Just remember the golden rule, if Peter Molyneux says it, then the opposite MUST be true
  • See the thing I don't get about Molli is.. "i was creatively suffocated". At the time he quit he was the head of the uk microsoft team of creative or something like that, so he was basically saying "I wasn't allowing myself to make the games I wanted to make"
  • I'm sure all platforms keep tabs on what the others are doing.
  • @6 lol I think you are Peter Molyneux and you are using reverse psychology on us ;)
  • I for one am excited that Molyneux has left Lionhead. 22Cans and it's current project (look it up and prepare to be in awe of his mad genius) is just the beginning of his creativity and overall statement on the gaming industry. I'll admit, the crap he's said about Fable II and III was really disappointing, but that has all stopped since leaving Lionhead and MS behind. Maybe they weren't so much as suffocating him as putting words into his mouth.
  • Xbox is dying.. Jump ship now.
  • about windows 8 not being mentioned at e3, sure they probably could have. but sony did not start speaking about their 3d tvs during their conference either. at e3 people expected xbox, playstation and nintendo. thats what they got, this was shown with microsofts rebranding of many windows lines to include xbox, such as xbox music. apple didnt come out and announce ios6 at e3, where is the 'why did this company leave out this' argument for them? they announced it this week is why. as far as im aware microsoft is announcing much for windows 8 next week. its called a time and a place, e3 they focused on xbox, some games and features for the future. i feel it was right of them to not cloud it all by throwing future pc tech in the mix. why water down both when you can have a seperate conference for each? microsoft are not ignoring windows like he implies, has he not seen the massive overhaul and effort they are putting into windows 8?
  • also friends close enemies closer. any market in ANY business, if they are smart pay attention to the competition. look at the mobile market for instance. this isnt an act of evil. this is attempting to give the consumer EVERYTHING they want.
  • follow sony yeah right sony follows mirco and nintendo ;)
  • @$ i think its not so much that they are watching their competition as they are just watching sony thus allowing pc games to sneak up on them @6 its not really a general apathy for kinect its one for the titles released on it, kinect could be a wonderful tool for devs if we didnt get a tonne of shitty party games and things that are "better" with it because they have some voice commands that dont work properly and are fester with the controller, if there was a decent and forgive me for use of this word "hardcore" game releases on it that actually appealed to the people who bought the console in the first place rather than trying to steal nintendos marketshare and failing then people would be more willing to get behind it as fir PC innovation, the market on PC games has evolved significantly over the last few years despite EA and microsofts attempts to buy up all PC only publishers the likes of valve with the steam platform have changed the way people buy games and play them and pc only titles are just going from strength to strength
  • Who gives a fuck what Molyneux thinks, he's been talking shit for years, and of course they follow what Sony does with its future consoles, their in a constant war to be the best entertainment console. Only a fool wouldn't be watch the opposition constantly. Idiot
  • So the moron gets fired and crys and moans about his former employer? and i thought this tool couldnt get any more pathetic.
  • @16 alot of people, especially those in the industry. Despite his tendency to over exaggerated everything about the games he works on he is a very smart guy when it comes to this businessand has been around it a long time. plus it doesnt hurt that pretty much every game he touches is a hit its rare to find anyone with a track record like his
  • He's kinda saying truth, i might make the jump too, MS lack of respect for gamers is clearly shown by it's conference this year. Since past 3 years what we see is tons of crappy Kinect shovelware, A Forza, Gears, Halo and Fable + yeah I forgot conference always ends with COD demo and exclusively times dlcs (WOW) They removed their game centric shows from xbox live, Their focus has shifted. They want XBOX to be a Home Entertainment System, which provides games instead of a Gaming Console which provides a few Entertainment services. May be it's a better thing for them but as a core gamer, I want some respect And it seems Sony is giving that to it's gamers. Every year we see new IPs + dedication and respect towards gamers and PS Plus is a healthy service which provides free goodies, not to forget Home for free goodies too. In this Gen I've friends here and I'm used to it but probably I'll cross the line and go towards Beyond (lolz) in next gen. But PS3 please fix your online interface & issues in next gen . They are troublesome
  • he is blind as Microsoft "obsessively" follows Nintendo.
  • i dont mean to sound stupid or start any wars, but can someone please explain to me this hated for xbox becoming a home entertainment system? surely this is nothing but a good thing? rather than having 15 different set top boxes for each thing, i always wanted sky but its just another set top box. then it came to xbox (kind of), as did many other services. people are aware that just because facebook is now on xbox, halo does still work? it hasnt switched it off. i put in battlefield 3 and it plays PERFECTLY fine! i spend all night playing multi player in my party. people say e3 ignored gamers? didnt microsofts presentation BEGIN with halo 4? this is one of these hardcore games fans hammer on about right? just because all this new media got a large mention, to me that is exciting. tying my phone to my xbox is just one of these extra things that i will take, and appreciate, as my desk only needs certain things. i can sell my xbox remote, i can sell my chatpad and just use my phone, less things cluttering everything up! all i can say is imagine moving house, surely it is better to just need your tv, the xbox, and a controller. and not several other set top boxes and tons more plastic? oh and may i add, all these media updates are free and optional. people like me who want them, can have them. and like i said, my games still play fine, bbc iplayer does not switch off call of duty just to show me an advert for doctor who.
  • whatever, aslong as I can play used games, i'll stick with my consoles.
  • @21 its pretty simple, its not what theyre doing but how theyre doing it. yeah games still work but to get to any stored on the console you have to got through several tabs of social and tv apps full of adverts to get to them adding new media is a good thing but it should always be games first media second because first a foremost this is a games console and was sold to us as one
  • @23 I don't get when people say that. It takes not even 10 seconds to get to your game tab. And the ads hardly take up a lot of room, so its easy to just ignore them
  • He is right unless i see micrsoft is focusing on games, gaming and developing great original IPs exclusive to the next console i will be getting only a ps4 to sit next to my pc.
  • @ 21- People are slow to change and want to bitch about it. It's not as hard to play a game as everyone makes it out, a few seconds if its not in the tray or you haven't played it in awhile and I have 130+ games on my HD, another problem is people parrot what they read online in their own comments ,too much of the same complaints.Let um bitch. Just take a look at your friends list right now. How many of them are actually gaming? I have only 8 friends online, I live in the states it's still early here, and 6 of them are on Netflix. Pretty telling if you ask me.
  • Nintendo Sony Microsoft
  • I'm still surprised the original xbox360 wasn't forced to be recalled. Microsoft has had so many chances to get it right, it's only natural to think that they never will.
  • I already bought a PS3 for the lack of exclusives on the xbox. Microsoft better give us some new IP's or else I'm finding it hard to keep supporting them.
  • I somewhat agree with this. So far, there really isn't enough innovation in consoles, and I don't count Kinect or PS3's Move. I've already stated to many of my friends (and to myself) that after the Xbox 360, I'm not buying another game console. It's fun, but not worth the money and time anymore as I have other pressing things that need attention as well as I have other hobbies that'll be more enjoyable.
  • Why does everyone get emotional and write huge paragraphs. Their just games, play them fun and dont bother getting caught up in the behind the scenes business.
  • Surely it's good sense to follow the competition closely. I'm not saying they should just copy and paste the PS4 to make the new MS console, but all it would really take is one killer function on a new console to perhaps get a large swing in the sales numbers. If you can copy the other guys new function will having something else cool of your own design, that is a win.
  • I'm not buying any new consoles until i complete every single game for the xbox360! Period! See what your achievements have done MS!?!? You will never sell me another console again!!
  • I personally thought espionage and spying are common practice in the political and business realms. I personally wish that XBOX would get some sort of web browser,ESPN1/or NFL License. And I have always thought Moly's ideas were just too idealistic.
  • The guy is clearly saying anything to get back in the news. Fact is after he left Microsoft no one cared about him anymore. Also I say the reason Microsoft don't focus on PC gaming is because the overwhelming majority of gamers are on consoles, oh and PC games suck.
  • @ #19 Words of wisdom right there. I'm a core gamer, got my first NES in 1989. I've just been turned off by what MS is doing, they won't even make a new IP and really don't care, they know they can keep making GoW and Halo and it will sell by the truck loads. I have a Kinect and never use it, better with Kinect my ass. At least Activision makes no bones about force feeding us CoD every year.
  • Although I agree with what he's saying, this guy promises innovation in all of his games, yet they get worse with each release. He acts like he invented gaming and is some wise mage. You aren't Miyamoto dude, you're mediocore.
  • @36 Sony aren't exactly making a whole lot of new IPs either. The same argument could be made in regard to the familiar suspects of God of War, Gran Turismo, Uncharted and WipEout. 3rd parties aren't exactly pushing out a whole lot either. Nintendo aren't innocent either, although since there tends to be so many years between each instalment of their main series with a consistently high level of quality, there isn't much to complain about. After all, there was 20 years between the last 2 Kid Icarus games and Skyward Sword is the only proper Zelda title for the Wii (Twilight Princess was a Gamecube game that was in development for so long, it was ported to the new console as a launch title, as well as having a limited Gamecube release) That said, I don't exactly think the PC market is drowning in innovation either. Command & Conquer 4, Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Star Craft 2... (though, again, in some of those cases there has been so long between releases that its understandable).
  • Couldn't disagree with him more. Xbox is currently the strongest it's ever been.
  • Thumb me down all you like, but some people get far too serious over shit they cant control.
  • I'm already planning to jump ship. Using my PS3 more now, even for Netflix. On Xbox, it takes almost 2 minutes for Netflix to boot. When my gold comes due, its going to silver and any online gaming I need will be via PC. 'Nuff said...
  • The lack of respect here for the man that created Bullfrog Studios is shocking.
  • This man is a liar. I believe nothing that he says.
  • Molyneux has the best of intentions - always genuine. His problem has always been exaggeration. This time, however, I feel like he's right on the money. Good show, mate. Hats off.
  • :42 I know, he might exaggerate about everything but the games really do speak for themselves
  • Guy bangs on and on about innovation despite 2 crap fable sequels, that nonsense mylo at E3 a few years ago and now one part of an experiment where a piece of dlc costs £50,000? Guys a joke in the industry and its news to me the console market squeezed out the PC?
  • hahaha what a joke if he thinks the Console industry is going under.. it pretty much it just getting to its peak, yeah sure Xbox 360 is going the wrong direction with the whole Media frenzy crap that keep adding, but thats just because thats how fast our world moves. and if it wasnt in there, people would be saying "oh well how come i dont have Facebook, or Apps, or youtube, or HBO on my Xbox" so hopefully they are just trying to push all this crap onto the 360 so that they can determin wheather or not if they are going to make the NEW Xbox Console around the same concept, or are they going to strictly just go down a Console based solely AROUND GAMING. like they said the 360 was suppose to be about. so we shall see i guess, but i'm not worried.
  • MS watches Sony obsessively... yet everything they do is trying to match Nintendo (smart glass, Kinect). I'm confused. I'm surprised that this is the thing many Molyneux critics are willing to nod and agree with him on, it's more of his recent chicken little act and amongst the most disingenuous stuff he's ever said. You guys understand he's trying to sell mobile games now, right? Doom-saying consoles and the company that fired him (resign? I doubt it with the way he's running off at the mouth recently) is not some objective thing he has no other reason to do.
  • @42 - The lack of respect you speak of comes after years of exageration and nonsense comments with games that never deliver on his lofty promises. All deserved imo.
  • heard from a few friends that worked for codemasters ,who later moved to lionhead, when there studio got closed down that Molyneux was not happy with ms for many things, that it was the final straw, last big thing was the Kinect sensor being dumbed down,ie the the processor being taken out substituted for a emulator running in software ,less powerful, slower resulting in latency, cheaper camera lower resolution unable to detect finger movements, there was big ,big money ppl getting in the way, result was his AI project Milo would never come out in kinect current form.
  • @19 I'm sorry, but I will never understand people like you. Coming onto an xbox site, basically bashing xbox and praising the competition like it's so much better. You say Microsoft shows a lack of respect for gamers this year, when Microsoft actually showed more games than both Sony and Nintendo. True, some of them were multiplat, but they are still games nonetheless. Sony spent 30+ minutes talking about the Move and that game Wonderbook, and yet I'm supposed to believe they care about the core gamer more than Microsoft? Want to know why Microsoft parades the Kinect around? It's because it has made them money, and people actually like it. All because you don't, that doesn't mean that people should follow suit. So, since that's the case, Microsoft should just stop supporting a product that has made them money? Wow, I can't wait to see you own your own business. Microsoft from day one with the 360 has always said that they wanted the 360 to be the ultimate entertainment hub. Unless you just got into gaming this year, you (and everyone else) should know that. Want to know where that trend started? It started when people bought the PS2 because it was a cheaper DVD player, and the PS2 sales took off. Games haven't been strictly gaming consoles since the early 2000s, over 10 years ago. It's funny, I don't remember a huge outrage when the 360 was introduced to Netflix, a non-gaming related service. What's so different about today from back then? Nothing. As a core gamer you want respect? They showed hardcore games at their conference. How is that not showing you respect? Was Sony showing you respect when they wasted time with Wonderbook? Yes, Sony does introduce new IPs every year, but just like Microsoft, they still focus on their tried and true exclusives, like God of War. Anyone accusing Microsoft of milking their IPs can throw it right back at Sony. Also, as I've already stated, if you want to look at hard facts, Microsoft actually showed more exclusive titles than Sony did this year. It's obvious you don't know anything about Ps Plus. Yes, if you become a member, you get those games, but they are NOT free. Once you stop being a PS Plus member, you lose those games, meaning that you have to pay to get them, and they really aren't even yours. Technically they would be rentals. Is it a good service if you want to be a hardcore Playstation gamer and don't mind paying that service for the rest of your life? Absolutely, but that doesn't mean that we can start spreading stuff about the service that isn't true. At least when Microsoft offers you Gold member deals, you get to keep those games, even after you stop becoming a Gold member. Microsoft watches Sony, as Sony watches Microsoft. Where do you think Sony got their trophy system from hmmm? All of the game companies watch the competition, because it's smart. Microsoft and Sony already have core gamers on their team, so they are trying to bring in casual gamers with Kinect and Move. Nintendo is doing the opposite, they already have the casual gamers, now they want the hardcore gamers back. I still fail to see how Sony cares about 'core' gamers more than Microsoft does, when they do the same damn things that you accuse Microsoft of doing, and sometimes it's even worse.
  • @51 Thank you! You just saved me a whole lot of typing. I agree 100% with your post.
  • @24, The ads MOST CERTAINLY are all up in your face all the time 'cause may I mention that the gaming blocks are friggen tiny compared to the usually non-gaming related ADS and like 95% of the dashboard is shity ads.
  • @51 I don't know you will read it or not but still I'm gonna reply. You got pretty annoyed their my friend. I had no intention to do so. First thing: I love my Xbox and I really like it's online community and cross game chat. What I hate is that they don't even try, at least Sony conference opened with a great 3rd party monologue + we often see free dlc for games on PS3 Batman AA, L.A Noire e.t.c Those things are not to be found on Xbox. Sony introduced Heavy Rain, Demon Souls, Twisted Metal e.t.c at least there is 1 new ip every year, what was the last time we saw a new greater IP on Xbox. + not to forget that rehashing same kinda E3 every year hurts fable is a mediocre title and Forza has been milked to death (Although I'm a Forza Lover but it has gotten repetitive), I love Gears and Halo but removing gaming shows restricting game alotted space and then paid online (although it doesn't cost much) are all hindrances(in a way). I know PS Plus service & how it works at least it's a good add on and I like Home too. Yes indeed Ps3 sold a lot as cheaper Blu-Ray player but you are missing the point I ain't complaining about services, I'm complaining focus on them and alotted space to them. When I turn on my Xbox, I wanna see more about games and less about other stuff + please give us exclusive dlcs, may be free content and new ips. And believe it or not I will be Happy, And trophies are no match for Cheevos (Although Platinums are shiny bastards lolz) P.S = And I ain't saying PSN is perfect, the matchmaking has improved but still no cross chat is always hurting + I hate the NXE, I want to be in Home when I turn on Ps3 like my dashboard should be Home Network.
  • i don't want innovation. I want my gaming to stay exactly the way it is, with awesome graphics, deep storylines, and me sitting in my fuggin boxers on the couch with a controller in my hands, my ever-faithful companion Mt. Dew by my side. I don't want Kinect, because I don't want to wave my hands at the tv screen in my precious off-time. I come home from work, exhausted, kiss the wife and kids goodnight, and while they drift off I can lounge with some fallout or lollipop chainsaw (oh wait i said deep story) i mean final fantasy and let the stress melt away. If innovation means I have to give this up in favor of jumping around in my skivvies and my nuts getting a rash from slapping the inside of my thigh repeatedly after a hard day at work...count me out. Suck one, Petey. Gaming is fine where it is.
  • @54 Of course I'll read it, I love debating about games. I fail to see how just simply responding to your post = annoyed, but whatever. They don't even try? Try what, showing games? Once again, they showed more games than Sony or Nintendo this year. Your defense on how Sony is trying is exclusive DLC from Arkham Asylum and LA Noire? Are you serious? The Arkham Asylum exclusive was just a challenge map with Joker, hardly anything game breaking, and LA Noire was orginally supposed to be PS3 exclusive, so it made sense. I guess we can ignore all of the exclusive stuff Xbox gets first before other platforms? The reason Sony got them is because they paid for them to be exclusive. Microsoft can do the same thing, and you want to know what will happen? Sony fanboys will complain that they won't be able to get it. Hell, they constantly complain about Microsoft getting DLC one month before they do, even though they're going to get it later on. I for one, am happy Microsoft isn't trying to buy studio after studio like Sony does (that's why Sony has more exclusive IPs). That means more gamers get to enjoy those games as opposed to Sony trying to lock them down. I find it funny how you think more new IPs = better? If that's the case, then the Wii is the best system because it has more exclusive games than both the 360 and the PS3. Generally the highest regarded games that come out year after year happen to be multiplatform titles. Also, exclusives happen to be based on opinion. Sony may have more IPs, but does that mean that you or anyone else will like all of them? I own a PS3, and the only IP that ever hooked me was Uncharted, which is an amazing series. The others, not so much. You're talking about Microsoft milking these IPs, but once again, you can throw it right back at Sony. They're doing it right now with God of War, and Uncharted is starting to become like that, not to mention, Sonys Super Smash Bros ripoff. The only new real IP that Sony showed this year was The Last of Us. Wow, just one. I know there's Beyond, but until I see some new gameplay from it, it's Heavy Rain 2, which isn't new. When you turn on your Xbox, you're immediately taken to the Home screen, where you start your game. The default selection that your cursor is on is to start your game. Meaning that you can start your game without messing with anything else (or you can set it up to start your game immediately, skipping the dashboard). Also, once again, since the start, Microsoft stated it wanted xbox to be more than a gaming machine. Where were you and everyone else complaining about it then, back in 2005/2006? I don't know why you're praising Home so much. All this time, you're complaining that the xbox isn't as much of a gaming machine but you're praising a feature on the PS3 that is utterly useless, and is removed from actual gaming. Doesn't make sense.
  • /sigh i don't want to play videogames on my computer. if i did i'd become a pc gamer. i don't want to play games on an ios device either and crane to look at a small screen with dodgy controls while the battery tells me it's given up on life. all for a 400 dollar price tag whilst the newer ios games are incompatiable. what i've always loved about consoles is the pace they move at, the fact you don't need to shell out tons of money for extra hardware etc. i'd just like to be able to play my 360 with some interesting titles but i know they don't sell and that's the saddest part. probably a huge part of the reason why sony is in so much trouble is they're constantly taking on new ips from independent studios.
  • @51 no need to go all fan boy the man was talking sense. Just because you own a specific brand doesn't mean you have to bow down to it, seeing all other as inferior. Your PsPlus argument is invalid and so wrong, so what if you have to pay a subscription to keep the free games, it's more than Microsoft give you for free with their subscription. With live you get: Party chat DOTW Online Play Facebook, YouTube etc With Ps free you get: Online Play YouTube, internets etc Meaning all you pay gold for are: DOTW (Borderlands, DLC, sonic, cod 4 map packs anyone?) Party chat Is that worth a fiver or would you rather pay a fiver and get games for free?
  • @57 - Dude, um, REALLY? Where do I begin? Oh, nevermind....
  • Well said Peter, I have to agree with what he has said. The console market, speaking only from my experience as an XBOX 360 user, seems to have turned into a fat lazy cash cow, with a slight personality disorder... I mean look at all the R & D time and money they are putting into, advertising blocks in the new terrible dashboard, a dashboard itself designed to emulate the Windows Phone, not really about gaming then. There just seems so much time and effort into things 'non-gamer' related....Movie services, music downloads, advertising etc...They have lost touch with the core purpose of the console...to play games! Stop trying to steal even more thunder from the PC by adding things we prefer to do on there anyway and focus on what you created the platform for...gaming, I think the terrible E3 outing this year shows that they are more excited about their non gaming related exploits than actually giving the gamers what they want.....dare I say it again?....GAMES!
  • until he makes something with his new studio, then we'll say whos watching who
  • @58 I love how you say I'm a fanboy, yet seem to have not read my post at all, knowing that I've bashed both sides. It's cool, it's all you really have to go on when you can't muster up a decent argument. You say my PS Plus argument is wrong, yet show nothing to show that. If I'm so wrong, why don't show it then hmmm? Everything I said about it was correct. You have to pay a fee to get it's service, and if you stop paying these 'free' games get taken away. Those are the facts buddy. I also love how you completely owned yourself with your response. With PSN I get Youtube, internet, etc....? Xbox is about to get an internet browser later this year, so there goes that. Not only that, the browser on the PS3 isn't that good at all, and I already have a computer for the internetz. Buddy, Youtube is already on 360, and it works better than the PS3 version. Ouch. When I pay for Gold, I get great online play, special DOTW (sometime they suck, sometime they don't), and a cool feature known as Party Chat, that Sony refuses to put on their system, despite the fact that the gamers want them to, yet they are willing to put it on the PS Vita, but not the PS3? Oh yeah, Sony cares so much about the 'core' gamer ::o Yeah, to me Gold membership is more worth it, because at least I know whatever I buy, I get to keep. Can you say the same for PS Plus? Nope, because the 'free' games you get from it are not free, because they get taken away if you stop paying, which means they would be rentals. I'm sorry if I don't want to have a bunch of games that get taken away because I don't want to pay a monthly fee for the rest of my life.
