Speculation: Microsoft muses about the next generation
Written Friday, June 13, 2008 By Joe Robinson

In a conversation with IGN, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of Strategy and Business Development Shane Kim commented on ideas for the next generation of Xbox:

"How [do] you think about next generation? What is that next generation going to encompass? How are you even going to define that? All of that is part of the equation. What kind of geographic expansion do we need to see? Is the world more of an online world than a hardware-oriented world? I think there are some really fascinating opportunities in front of us."

Despite being as non-committal as ever, this statement never-the-less betrays a hint of Microsoft’s interest with online content, and digital distribution.

Many believe that the current version still has a good few years left in it, so it is unlikely we'll hear any more information for a long while.

I think that I'll be happy with the Xbox 360 for another 2-3 years at least.

If mine will last that long, I'll enjoy the 360 for the rest of it's time.

I just would like to understand how Microsoft can make a "better" console. I mean the PS3 and Xbox 360 are one of the most universal entertainment systems out there. By holding photos, playing music, playing games, playing movies and videos. I mean you got a complete home entertainment system. What more could you ask for?

He didn't hint at digital distribution...
I wonder if they will make a single console or make multiple variations on one like they did with the 360, only more varied than just whether there is a harddrive included in the package or not. So you can buy one type of console depending on what sorts of things you think you will get up to but have the opportunity to upgrade it to include aspects of the other consoles. Maybe the hardware could be upgradeable (only without having to ship it off to a distant facility somewhere and get a different console back).

I just think they should make a console that doesn't make you feel like you are playing on the runway of an airport, and allow developers to make games with NO loading screens at all.

You can put porn on the console already, when you hook up a PC/media player to the 360. If you wanted to...

i think microsoft will be VERY cautious about releasing a new console as they will want to avoid creating a load of ticking time bombs like the did with the original 360's. They'll surely think of something to make the console even better than the elite, i just hope they bring out a new Halo (with Bungie) that is as good as Halo 3 is on the 360.

i think that they should take their sweet time to think of a new idea for a new xbox because the 360 is my favorite system and i think that maybe they should remake something from xbox 1 like Serious Sam or something and turn it next gen and do the same until the idea is perfect and unveil it around E3 2010 or so.

no more ELECTRONIC BOUTIQUE. all digital downloads instead of cd's. that would be freakin sweet f&*% the middle man get it striagh from the growers and save a few dollars for the gamers.
next gen XBOX needs full online capabilities and 1 terrabite of storage at the least.

Seeing as I'm still happy playing SNES, PSX and old PC games I'm certainly content with the 360 for a few more years. I just hope they take their time with the next console to make sure it actually works and to make sure it's really great.

#14 I laughed at that comment, nicely done.

I can wait a few years for the next generation. I'm fine with my 360 right now. They should time it with the next Infinity Ward made COD though. Then they'd sell like hot cakes, forget that Halo crap.

*Wonders if there'll be a 360 Originals section on the next Xbox* lol
It better have achievements that's for sure, lol
I'm sure they'll blow us away with whatever they produce in years to come. but like a lot of you are saying, no rush yet, the 360 is riding high and i'm loving the games that are being churned out.

Xbox can last for about 3-4 more years for me also, unless i have to go through 6 more of them. I think that instead of next gen they should be worried about making a working product

I don't think even Microsoft knows what they mean when they say "Next-Gen"

The next console comes bundled with Vista.

if microsoft isin the works of a new game console they need to take there time. the 360 is very up to date with today's techniology so there really is no need to try and shake things up again. maybe around 2015 we might get a new console. i;d say sooner but they really need to improve on the life span of these consoles so that they last a lot longer than they are now.

I think the 360 still has at least 2 years of life in it. I think the next generation of consoles will arrive in about 2010, and I can't wait to see what they have to offer!

The one thing that annoys me is the failure at backwards compatibility. I mean, just look at the list of games they have had to make compatible for the 360 and there are still some that don't work AND the ones that do work have a lot of problems with them.
That is probably the biggest problem with the 360, other than the Red Ring and the Microsoft points system needs to be changed in the next xbox, if there is one. I hate it when you only have 340 points and the download is 400 and you lend up having to buy 500 points but only needed 60.

the only reason I see to make a next-gen right now would be to either A) fix some of the current consoles problems (RROD and make it a little quieter) or B) just to make some more money. The graphics and overall system works great.

When they do make a new one the need to make full backwards compatibility straight from the start...none of this hoping the next update supports Original Xbox XXX.

i think they should just work on a really upgraded version of the 360, mostly like the elite, but with more upgrade than just a bigger hard drive, a new output and a new color. The next console could have an upgraded hardware to make it last longer than 4 months but keeping the software, just updating it each spring/fall to add a little something. And i love how the 360 is right now, they can take their time.

Well i heard there going to make contacts (the ones you put in your eyes) for video games. So you dont need the tv at all and they have created otherr tvs that are better than HD. I think its called Super Wall and there's another one called the Hologram TV.

Personally I'd rather them work on mass releasing really good titles, instead of a new system I love my 360 I don't want anything like a (720?)
