I always wonder how Rockstar manages to somehow overshadow the sequels so vividly. Almost no one I knew played or even heard of Red Dead Revolver, yet Red Dead Redemption was popular among them. Max Payne 1/2 were a bit more well known, being that there was a film and all (with Xzibit, probably the main reason it was mo' pop'lar), but none of my friends played them. But they all bought Max Payne 3. Who'd have thunk it? |

IS that 107.7 a typo ? Or is it seriously just $107.7 |

@4 I think it was Ludacris, not Xzibit. But I'm struggling to decide which is worse. That movie was atrocious. |

| i knew that Max Payne outselling Diablo 3 had to be wrong! i just read on joystiq.com that Diablo 3 sold 3.5m copies in the first 24hrs?! plus another 1.2m that got it free through WoW annual pass, so thats 4.7m on day one, and up to 6.3m by the end of week one.... and if i remember my maths lessons correctly 6.7>3 right? |

@11 - The article very specifically states that 3 million copies of Max Payne 3 were shipped (i.e. ordered by stores) and that that number is "not necessarily a reflection of sales". Personally, I'm more interested in how many copies were actually sold. So are your Diablo 3 numbers actual sales or just units shipped? And, just as a swipe, how many of those Diablo 3 purchasers can even play the game? |

@9 There's no way we'll see GTA 5 this year. Rockstar like spring releases GTA 4-April 2008 Red Dead-May 2010 L.A. Noire-May 2011 Max Payne 3-May 2012 The earliest we'll see GTA 5 is spring 2013. |

@13 your welcome i finished it in 9 hours, it was ok but nothing special imo. I think if remedy did not sell the franchise to rockstar they would have done a better job tho, max payne was missing that style of the first game. i didnt even see any pink flamingos couldnt be botherd with multiplayer after 1 glitchy match. bought it for 60 dollar, at least someone else is happy with it for 35 dollar now. |

I'm surprised that Lee didn't mention that Take-Two has projected to expect revenues between $1.75 - $1.85 billion by the end of next March. Whatever you think about Max Payne 3, you all have to admit that it alone will not rake in that kind of cash. The only way they're going to see those numbers is if they release GTAV. |

lol ships nobody will have to use "shipped" numbers when GTA 5 comes out cause the headlines will be about how much it already sold in the first 24hours, thats after the headlines about how much preorders were made before its even released. |

@4 It was Ludacris and it wasn't that bad of a movie I'm a huge max payne fan I agree Ludacris playing Bravura was a stupid idea but I love the games and 3 is just amazing |

@14, nope thats actual sales, not units shipped http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/3-5-million-people-bought-diablo-3-in-the-first-24-hours/ |

@19 Last I checked, every GameStop (and I assume GAME), Target/Wal*Mart/Tesco, Best Buy, etc. has a POS system on their registers which track inventory sold. Not mention each of these places have web sales that can be easily tracked (you can throw Amazon in this category, too). That's where the actual sales figures would come from... But because it involves purportedly confidential financial info from several companies, the figure is bit harder to determine - but not impossible. And is obviously the more important of the two numbers. The best illustration I have for what I'm getting at comes from the comic industry. Back in the 90s, Marvel Comics re-launched X-Men #1 with at-the-time "hot" artist Jim Lee, and 7 million copies were shipped. Bully for Marvel and all, but the truth is that there weren't (and still aren't) even 1 million avid comic book fans. And even if there were, the assumption that every one would like X-Men and buy 7 copies is just ludicrous. The result was that there were several stores that went out of business with cases of this comic in their stockroom and you can barely give away copies of X-Men #1 now. |

| @21 - Then Diablo 3 trounced Max Payne 3, since whatever the sales figures for MP3 actually are, it still only shipped 3 million which won't even come close to Diablo 3 even if every copy of MP3 that shipped is sold to a gamer. |

| @22 about the X-Men re-launch in the 90's there was 5 covers for issue 1, so atleast 5 comics per person were bought. i know i bought all 5, and so did all my friends. |

| why are we comparing diablo 3 sales to max payne sales exactly? max payne3 isnt out on the pc yet, it comes on june the 1st. In japan it comes out in september on xbox 360. Diablo 3 is available world wide, and there are more people with pcs than xbox 360s and ps3s combined. Because Max Payne is a 3rd installment, they rely mostly on fanbase purchases. Diablo has build up a fanbase way before max payne. but if you just look at sales, than yeh, diablo outsold it, if you look at how fair the fight is, than i dont think its fair. |

| I love how people are debating sales of Max Payne 3 and Diablo 3 like they have some sort of stake in the company that makes those games. Acting like you are going to profit or benefit of witch one does better, GTFOH |

@24 - Yes, I'm aware of that, I was running a shop at the time. I am also aware that there were actually only 4 covers that made one piece of artwork when set side-by-side, and the 5th was a double gatefold that just featured the other 4 covers on one book. I just didn't want to bog down the illustration with rather pointless details. Because it doesn't matter that there were multiple covers and that you and your buddies bought 5, that still didn't come close to the 7 million copies Marvel shipped. Even if every collector in the US at the time had bought 5, which is unrealistic and would never happen, it still wouldn't. Out of curiosity, do you still have those copies? Have you tried to sell them? :D @25 - I wasn't comparing the two games sales figures, I was just trying to point out that there's a difference between units shipped and units sold and I asked the Diablo guy for clarification on which numbers his were. I am interested in the actual sales of Max Payne due to what I mentioned in another post - if Take-Two expect to rake in almost $2 billion in revenues next fiscal it won't be on Max Payne (or BioShock Infinite, or whatever) - it'll be because R* releases GTAV. |

| @25 @25 the only reason i bought it up is because there was an article on this site a few days beforehand saying MP3 had outsold Diablo 3, and that just sounded wrong to me, because of the very reasons you stated - its worldwide, and on a platform much more people own. im not trying to say one is better or any of that kind of shit, just pointing out that the figure i thought sounded wrong, was indeed wrong. i wasn't just trying to draw comparisons of random games for no reason. |
