Devil's Third

Opinion: THQ Had No Choice But To Drop Devil's Third
Written Wednesday, May 16, 2012 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

Following the announcement of THQ’s intention to drop Devil’s Third, the future of Tomonobu Itagaki’s long-awaited action game hangs in the balance. But this isn’t another example of a publisher playing the bad guy. The truth is that THQ doesn’t really have a choice.

Beset by development troubles and set against the backdrop of THQ’s perilous financial situation, doubts have surrounded Devil’s Third for quite some time. It’s a title that represents a significant gamble for any publisher. But for a company in THQ’s position, it’s a risk that they just can’t afford to take.

So what is that position? Earlier this year, THQ laid off hundreds of staff and sliced their CEO’s salary in half, following a sharp decline in its licensed and core games and the disastrous performance of its uDraw gaming tablet. To this day, around 1.4 million units of the peripheral sit gathering dust in warehouses.

As a result of these previous missteps, the company now faces the very real danger of being delisted from NASDAQ, if by July 23rd it hasn’t raised its stock price above $1 for 10 consecutive days. With just over a month to go, the price is currently hovering at around 0.60¢ per share.

Such is the position of the company that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently said that he believes THQ will be dead before November. He later apologised for his comments, but tellingly, he didn’t retract them. We think Zelnick is wrong, but THQ’s precarious position is undeniable.

Which brings us to Devil’s Third. The first game from Itagaki’s new outfit Valhalla Game Studios, Devil’s Third is a sci-fi, third-person shooter that marks a dramatic departure from the veteran’s legacy of games like Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive. Bolstered by Itagaki’s reputation, it’s a highly-anticipated prospect.

Yet despite this, concerns for the commercial viability of the project remain. Itagaki may have spawned some huge franchises in the past, but his name does not guarantee healthy sales, especially in the West. We may know who Itagaki is, but he has far less cachet with the wider gaming public.

These worries are accentuated by the waning popularity of Japanese titles across the world. While many commenters point to a decline in the quality of games developed in Japan, even the stand-out examples struggle to pick up much of a following. They’re just not as popular as they once were.

With titles like Shadows of the Damned failing to make an impact, even well-received, Western-influenced action games like Vanquish don’t perform particularly well. It costs so much to bring a mainstream title to the market that sales figures comfortably in excess of a million aren’t just a luxury, they’re a necessity.

Coupled with the fact that Itagaki hasn’t created a successful new IP in some time - remember Trapt on PlayStation 2? No, us either - Devil’s Third was always going to be a big gamble.

None of this is to say that Devil’s Third won’t be a wonderful game, of course. Perhaps it will be. But publishers are just as concerned with marketability as they are with quality. Games have to make a profit. And for THQ, that need is even greater. The stakes are high.

There’s more too. In THQ’s recent earnings call, CEO Brian Farrell explained the publisher’s decision to drop Devil’s Third by pointing to a number of other factors in the development of the game. Factors that neither THQ nor Valhalla could do anything about.

According to Farrell, Valhalla’s engine provider went under recently, necessitating a costly and time-hungry shift. In addition to this, the Japanese Yen has substantially appreciated against the US Dollar, meaning that development costs have crept up and up. Ultimately, Farrell said that continued investment in the project just didn’t make sense against other titles in THQ’s lineup.

Despite this, it’s not all doom and gloom for the publisher. While it recently recorded a $240 million annual loss; the restructuring of the company, a big upswing in digital sales, and the decision to drop licensed kids titles in favour of big core games has changed their outlook. Sales figures for the last financial quarter exceeded expectations. Things are looking up.

Saints Row recently became THQ’s most successful non-licensed franchise, spurred on by sales in excess of 4.25 million for Saints Row: The Third, while the game’s revenue from digital distribution channels exceeds that of any console title in the company’s history. Add  Darksiders II’s pre-order figures to this, which come in at five times that of its predecessor, and the publisher’s renewed focus has them back on track.

Unfortunately for Itagaki and Valhalla, however, this new approach leaves no room for Devil’s Third.

We would love to see Devil’s Third hit retail, fly off shelves and sell millions. We hope it finds a new publisher and that Itagaki has another hit franchise on his hands. We also believe that the industry should stick its neck out for games of this type as they contribute to the diversity of the medium. But it’s not the right game for THQ. Not now.

No, what tipped them over the edge was uDraw and their investments in licensed titles.

Devil's Third doesn't deserve to pay the price for THQ's mistakes, but I supposed it must to keep the company afloat.

Hopefully someone picks it up as it did look very promising and Itagaki doesn't disappoint.

I really feel like darksiders 2 has a lot of promise. The fan base is building rapidly while the release date approaches and I personally feel that once DS2 hits, things will be much better and they may actually be able to start developing this where they left off.

@8 Seriously dude? You're tired of people expressing their opinions? Karl Marx called, he want's to know if you are still on for the communism seminar this weekend.

OT: Makes a lot of sense for a company trying to rebuild from a massive misstep to not take a gamble this big right now.

Just don't think about closing those doors till after you get Darksiders 2 shipped, THQ. After that, I couldn't care less. They are completely responsible for the mess they have gotten themselves in, and they have trashed some promising series along the way.

As long as Darksiders does good, I have no doubt someone else would pick it up, if the worst happens for THQ.

as long as d2 isn't as short as prototype 2 was right? Really d2 looks like a another cash in on dlc. That pisses me off. d1 was a great single player adventure with no dlc and a good 30-50 hours of playtime. I'm concerned d2 has been butchered to accommodate future dlc instead of a great lengthy single player campaign. It seems they are really counting on it to save them don't forget about sr3 dlc debacle. $20 pass to save $3 on 3 packs that only took 3 hours altogether. Plus that new expansion pack whatever that is. So it looks like sr3 will be a $100 game. Wow well played thq. That's how u are going get out of the red. Hey I'm not buying it!

I want to point out that Trapt wasn't really a new IP, it was really another game in Tecmo's Deception series. Personally I think Itagaki is an overrated creator. You can say his leaving is the reason Ninja Gaiden 3 sucked, but you can also say that its more like Devil May Cry 2. They tried to make the game more accessible for new gamers, and it blew up in their face.
And lets be honest here, Dead or Alive was a solid fighting game, but in no way close to Virtua Fighter or Tekken in terms of substance and playability. The ability to counter endlessly was frustrating and took a lot of the fun out of things.
Itagaki thinks he's a rockstar in the gaming world, but if he's a rockstar, the most comparable person is Axel Rose. A tool who looked better thanks to the talent around him.

@#8 - That's only because we didn't have the man power before Lee came on board. Oh and FYI, we've always posted up rumours. Always. And one of Lee's jobs is opinions. Opinions, which may I add, are spot on. Like this here article.

maybe udraw would've sold better if they'd supported it with more titles, i bought one (picked it up for half price in a post-xmas sale), but there's only 2 games that support it! my kids got bored of it faster than kinect.

@#8 : So, this opinions thing is being pushed now because Lee B is here?

I just find the whole "Opinion..." form of the titles to these topics quite off-putting. Also, is this just Lee B's opinion or X360A's?

It would help me come to my own opinions about these articles better if I knew.

And one more thing; opinions are ten a penny on the internet and I thoroughly endorse and applaud free journalism like this, but Games Journalism, as a part of the greater Gaming Industry, is dying on it's arse and although this may seem harsh, rightfully so.

Blogs are great, review sites are great, news is great, but opinions? Just take a look at any gaming forum and you'll want to smash your keyboard within minutes. Everyone's a critic nowadays, and just because you have your own site, it doesn't make your opinions more valuable in most people's eyes. Conjecture and speculation are trivial and rarely ever worth reading or acknowledgement. If you're going to post opinions, stick to dreams and aspirations (for a franchise or gaming in general). Farting in the wind by posting "opinions" as primary news articles rather than Features just... yeah, I'll end this here. If I carry on, I'll unintentionally cause offence.

I'm really surprised that Brian Farrel is still the CEO after the entire debacle over UDraw. He should have stepped down with honor saying 'Yep, I fucked up, it's my responsibility', or at least the board could have kicked him out. It's sad to see another new IP briefly be put on hold due to the continuous failings of THQ. I do look forward to Darksiders 2, I think that will be a great win for them and hopefully put them back on the right path to creating better games. Minus bad leadership.

You are absolutely right, opinions are ten a penny. But the backbone of this piece is journalism.

Trawling through investor reports? Journalism. Getting facts and figures on NASDAQ prices and uDraw units? Journalism. Threading in relevant reports by this website? Journalism. This article includes enough actual news for three or four news posts.

You've concentrated on the very first word of the headline to make your point, and it's a good one. Pure opinions are ten a penny. This isn't that.

@#20 - Most of what you read has someone's opinion in it, whether it's news, whether it's a review (that's all opinion, in case you didn't realise), whether it's previews, whatever, the whole reason they have opinions in them is because each person is different. Has different beliefs. Are enthusiastic about different subjects. I want each writer to have an opinion, have a voice... if not, we may as well just throw press releases at you. I know a lot of people appreciate our opinions and they come here because we're opinionated. We're honest. We tell it like we see it.

These are Lee's words and they may be his opinion, but the truth is, a lot of the above is fact. Lee just ties them all together with his words and the odd bit of opinion. And yes, us writers talk. We discuss features. We discuss angles. One piece will be read multiple times by multiple people who offer counter-points, offer different topics that need mentioning and so on. We do this across most facets of the site. In short: we're a team, that's what teams do.

You can say what you want, but the reason we have a site and we have an audience is because we have a voice and an opinion. You don't go onto the forums to read a review by Joe Blogs, you come to the main page to read our review. A person's opinion. You say that doesn't make our opinions more valuable than their's, we're not saying that, what we're saying is that people obviously want to hear our opinions, read them, know them, because otherwise, they wouldn't read them. Let me tell you, they get read. A lot. It's an opinion that you may not appreciate, but hundreds of thousands of users do. Take that voice and opinion away from any site and you may as well get fed PR lines from every publisher.

I am big fan of THQ, they have been making WWE since I have been playing it, and for what its worth I liked every single one of them. I have played Darksiders too, and hope Darksider 2 does some serious business, so that not only do we see Darksiders 3 but also WWE'13.
I had hoped Devil's Third would come out, but I am sure that once THQ gets back on track they would reboot this.
Fingers crossed on this one.

I have a new found respect for this site. I already enjoyed the site and articles written by everyone involved, but its nice to see you stand behind your writers and your work. You guys do an amazing job here and I know I can count on quality reporting when looking for news/reviews on any game. Keep up the good work.

OT: I agreed with Zelnick when he made the comments. Its a shame but outside of Darksiders and Saints Row, people aren't buying games from THQ. Every year, WWE sales drop off more and more. I've heard a few people say the final nail in the coffin was how terrible Homefront was. While that was bad, I thought it was them canceling ATV and Red Faction. ATV was still pretty popular and I really enjoyed Armaggedon. The main reason it didn't sell out here was because no one had heard of it. There was no hype/publicity for the game. The few people who did play it came back satisfied and now that the game finally dropped in price, its selling even more. I'd like to see THQ stick around but I really doubt its gonna be happening.

Hey guys, I work in the retail games sector and I see every title to flow through those doors, I think that THQ have been wearing some BIG SHOES for a while now and after taking risk after risk, I've really come to appreciate their work.

For example the U-DRAW tablet, I think it's great, there are obvious ways to improve that area of the market and its overshadowed by the functions of real tablets and software, but every step they have taken, has tried to push the market in a new direction lately. The only issue here is that the market has just crumbled beneath their feet.

Don't get me wrong there are reasons why everything has led to this point, but nobody wants to see THQ go down, and this industry needs THQ. They are the big, little guys... Anyway clear skies ahead and im definately in line to support their upcoming titles.

@ Webb and Lee, don't worry about the haters. I appreciate all the hard work you guys do and I regularly read the news section here. I would rather read about rumours and opinions than have nothing at all.

OT, hope nothing bad happens to THQ, they have been around for years and it would be a crying shame. They just need to change their gameplan. The SR3 dlc was pretty appalling and short from what I've heard, so I never purchased it. Maybe they should concentrate on bigger/longer games, than cutting content to release as dlc like so many others. If you plan on dlc, make it epic in size, and worth the cash outlay instead of making it a cash cow.

Back when i joined rumors didn't get posted much as far i can remember, but now every single rumor we hear about gets a post. it's like someone got bored and looked on N4G to find something to post about.

@#24 : Late for a reply, I know, but I was finishing my first run on DXHR yesterday. Prepare for tl;dr.

Lee B was quite defensive, but hey, he's young so that's to be expected.

Anyway, I come on to this site because you tell me how to get those impossible or challenging Achievements. Believe it or not, that's why most people come to this site, plus it's run by British people mostly and I can't stand the sensationalism of US written sites. I do not tend to attribute any importance to reviews and such because after over 2 decades of gaming, I know what I do and don't want to play already.

Don't take it as an insult, but every day I see and hear from kids (14 - 20 year olds) who want to make it as a "Games Journalist" and the internet has only increased their hopes for such a job. Yet, there is a massive amount of over-saturation of the market for this profession, too many of these people think that there will be A : Enough money (ie market share) for them to have such a job and B : That people and gamers in general will want to hear another financially-endorsed "official" opinion.

Yes, I know lots of the words I used there could be misconstrued, but financially-endorsed basically means they're getting paid for it (which alludes to stating only popular opinions and that the journalist is getting paid for doing something which isn't really a unique talent, as the market saturation is evidence of). As for "official", I know you're an independant site, but you're a large entity now. Most 360 gamers know your name and your site and that carries gravitas and responsibility with it. Your "opinions" are all "X360A's Opinion", not a specific writer's. Everything you upload as an article reflects on the entire site and will only be remembered as such by the majority of people who pass through this site.

As one final point, Lee B has been posting up the majority, if not all, of the "Opinion" articles thus far. If this is really just Lee's opinion, why don't we see more articles from you, Webb? Or Rich? Sure, you're busy with your respective lives and Lee B is trying to break through as a writer, so he does most of these extra articles, but I'd love to see something dischordant. You know, 2 staff members both posting differing (or maybe even clashing) opinions on the same thing. That would make a refeshing change to the usual "Each article speaks for us all" ethos that seems to be endemic within public-facing institutions since the dawn of man.

Food for thought, I hope.

To be honest Lee Bradley's post are the ones I always fully read.(No offense intended to any other staff members). I like to hear opinions on games and developers. I also like to hear the rumors. Yeah some might not always turn out to be true but he's always pretty clear about his thoughts on the likely hood of a rumor being true. Keep writing Lee.
