No plans for Blu-ray, says Microsoft
Written Monday, June 09, 2008 By Joe Robinson

Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division, quashes rumours about Blu-ray tech on the 360.

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Bach confirmed that Microsoft were not looking at switching over to Blu-Ray, but rather focusing on delivering HD content over Xbox Live:

"[The] Xbox 360 has a great ability to deliver [HD content] through the Xbox Live service."

He also commented that there hadn't been the great "acceleration" of Blu-ray media that everyone expected after HD-DVD was put out:

"You have to look at how fundamentally compelling the difference is between a progressive scan DVD player and the picture that it can produce and what you get on a high-definition player.”

“The reality is there is some difference, but most people look at it and say, "I am not going to pay extra for that.""

Well, that settles that then. But when one rumour falls another one rises, and Bach was not so quick to stifle the whispers about a certain motion sensor controller…

"We have people working on a lot of things."

He did however also comment that they had no "specific" plans on technology for the 360. Whilst they're not apparently working on the ‘next’ 360, there's enough to keep them "more then occupied for the foreseeable future".

Not an awful lot of years left on the 360 I reckon, so that's a bit worrying... (First post on x360a website :D...and before I get flamed it just coincidentally happens to be first post on this article)

Oh damn!

I really wanted a Blu-Ray player. Got my HD one for 360, and wanted Blu-Ray to go with.
Humm, back to DVDs then. Mind you, i personally don't see Blu-Ray replacing DVDs, most people don't have a large enough screen to actually make the difference mean anything. I think you need something over 50 inches for a difference, and it has to be True HD, rather than HD Ready.

It's probably a pride thing. Even though Microsoft's side lost, their not about to go an back Blu-ray now. They'll keep facing off against sony any way they can.

Hence the DLC focus. It's much cheaper simply to download HD movies then it is to buy a player.

@Pancakes: If you read the interview, you'll see why they've got no plans for the next xbox - they forsee it lasting quite a while longer yet.

I give give a damn about blu-ray but expect to see M$ using either blu-ray or something aside from DVD's for its next console, possibly all digital media (doubtful.) I just hope by the time the new system rolls out it actually fucking works. I don't expect to see the new console until '11 though.

While the Blu-ray discs are undeniably better quality, it doesn't seem worth it. While the HD option by Microsoft was an idiotic one, I'm happy to see Microsoft sticking to their guns. Screw Blu-ray, screw Sony.

If you people were smart you would just download all the Blu-ray to WMV HD conversions (not to mention any other HD movie in WMV HD) on usenet or wherever you get them. Just so you know that is the same codec M$ uses for their movies on marketplace. Burn onto a regular DVD-r and bam HD movies you get to keep for what like 5 cents a disc. Do some research and start getting your movies like that.

Oh well I use for my 360 for gaming, not WATCHING movies. Well I do watch movies but not ALL the time. Plus if I can see my picture fine thats good with me. I don't need no CRYSTAL BRIGHT picture. And plus buying a Ps3 just for the Blu-Ray? Wow, "Hey guys if the Blu-Ray doesn't get on the 360 the world is going to blow up". You can see your dvd picture just find on standard.

in my opinion, blu-ray will meet a similar fate as UMD, when the terabyte discs come out, we will laugh at the limits of blu-ray.

So are HD-DVD and Blu-ray, but there was still a 'war' to find out which was better. Business Semantics. Gotta love em.

How about you do some research before you make yourself look like an even larger idiot. Any Full HD TV comes with a native resolution of 1920x1080 (and generally comes with a built in HD tuner). This is true for ANY 1080p TV's, even the small 40" ones. "HD Ready" means the TV is capable of displaying normal HD, eg, 720p (1280/1366x768x768) if it is hooked up to an external HD source, and does not come with any built-in means of displaying this resolution, even though the panel is capable of it.

Hell, you can get 30" LCD monitors that display 2560x1600, so Full HD on a 50"+ TV's is actually quite shit in comparison.

Well, let's see. Blu-Ray is here right now and a Terabyte optical disk is VERY far away! They just made the 1TB HDD not that long ago so I doubt people are going to put of Blu-Ray for the next 3-5 years in hopes of something better. Especially not with the prices of 1080p TV's dropping so fast and the more people buy Blu-Rays, the cheaper they become, just like DVD's did. Remember when DVD's were said to fail as they were too expensive and player cost over $1000? There are WAY more people into home theatre then there is PSP fanboys with UMD's!

The Blu-ray disk if a step above DVD, the UMD is a step below. Do the math.

I don't know anyone who's really desperate to see movies with that slight difference in definition for the price it is. It'll be a long tie before Blu-ray overtakes DVD.

You don't even have to convert anything to WMV HD. When I get them they are already in WMV HD format ready to burn to a DVD-r! I burn them with nero burning rom as UDF discs and click the little box that says Force Xbox compatibility mode or some shit. Hey this beats anyother way of getting HD movies to watch on your 360. Oh here is another trick for ya, get a 1 gig or higher USB drive format it to FAT and then get a regular movie in Divx or plain WMV, and then you can transfer it to the USB drive and watch movies straight from that. The 360 is a great multimedia device that take full advantage of. If you would like me to help you use all these "advanced" functions of your 360 PM me always here to help!

That's all well and fine, if you have enough hard drive space on your 360. If you're like me, maybe you have a few TV shows downloaded because they never expire and they can eat up some space.

I wouldn't have bought a Blu-Ray for the 360 anyway. I am fine with downloading HD movies on X-Box Live. That along with my Comcast On-Demand and I'm set for all the HD I want. They look great and there's no need to return them! I think Blu-Ray has about 5 years of life until it is replaced by some sort of "box" that sits near your TV and you can download movies with ease. Several companies make these so far. It's just a matter of time until it goes mainstream. No media form will dominate until it is super easy for the average Joe to use. Sony has by far the most to lose when downloads become mainstream. Which is why they are pushing Blu-Ray so hard.

LMAO @ ezekiel 08.

Blu-ray & PS3 is STILL doomed for a couple of reasons, the capacity limit compared to terabyte discs/hdds is quite obvious.
As to regards to the visual end, the hologram projector is just around the corner, so who will want HD movies, when there will be Holographic movies out there.

Why do you think Microsoft left the HD war and isn't trying to rush a Blu-ray player out, because from a business perspective, its suicide.

Simple for non-Sony fanboys to see.

I'm glad that MS is shunning Blu-ray, but please, for the love of God, don't let them incorporate motion control into a standard controller. I move around when I play, and my most natural gaming position is with the controller behind my head. It's why I can't play most Wii games.

The GH/RB "Star Power" is annoying enough, I don't want any more.

With the huge acceleration in todays technology it would only be a waste of time to make it with a blue-ray anyway. You know as soon as that is realeased with the 360, blue-ray will become obsolite. So why waste your money

I was hoping that they would make an integrated blu-ray player. That way someone can hack into the 360 and make it play ps3 games. I probably am dreaming because most of the ps3 games requires a install and the 20 (or the 120) will be full in no time.

Good. I don't need to pay ten to twenty bucks extra for a movie that looks just fine on normal DVD. I mean, come on, does the experience really change that much when watching it on Blu-Ray. I will admit that the discs look cool...Blue is one of my favorite colors. But all that money for a forgettable change in picture. I have friends with Blu-Ray, not impressed.
