Crysis 3

Crysis 3 First Impressions Preview – Rumble in the Jungle

Like many a third offering in some of the franchises that we’ve seen in recent years, Crysis 3 is looking to blend the best bits of Crysis 1 with the best bits of Crysis 2. This isn’t something that Crytek are readily admitting or one of their PR lines, but come on folks, Crysis 3 is set in a jungle… an urban jungle. If that isn’t a killer give away, I don’t know what is.

Taking place 20 years after the events in Crysis 2, Crysis 3 throws you back into the Nanosuit as you play Crysis 1’s Prophet – yes, we know what happened to him in Crysis 2, but all that’ll be explained in due course – after New York city has become a shell of its former self. With “Nanodromes” now placed by Cell Industries over the major hubs of the Ceph invaded world, New York’s ecology has been accelerated vastly, and as a result, has created the “urban rainforest” which becomes the centrepiece of Crytek’s latest visual masterpiece.

In the hands-off presentation we pick up with Prophet deep behind enemy lines at a Cell defence post in Chinatown in a mission called “Hell is Right Around the Corner.” Tasked with the objective of accessing a nearby observation tower – a standard FPS objective then – Prophet starts off at the base of a set of stairs inside an overgrown interior, a click or so from the objective. With water dripping down through crevices in the ceiling, dead bodies littering the base of the dimly lit structure and large Ceph ships flying past the outskirts, it’s clear that stealth is key in this particular instance.

Here we get our first glimpse at Crysis 3’s new urban rainforest and Crytek’s “enhanced version” of the CryEngine 3. Despite being a night mission, the surrounding environment as Prophet hits the surface is a combination of thick dense jungle, artificial lights and stagnant swampland. Crytek are looking to instil the “7 wonders of the urban rainforest” into the Nanodrome encapsulated New York environment, with 7 distinct environments keeping the setting fresh from start to finish – the swampland setting near Chinatown is just one of those 7.

One of the few notions that Crytek are pushing with Crysis 3 is that you move from being the hunted into becoming the hunter – a popular move for many a franchise sequel. It’s probably why Crytek have placed an added emphasis on stealth then, meaning you can stay cloaked and snap Cell and Ceph neck without decloaking, as well as firing the new hi-tech bow with decloaking too – more on the bow shortly. They also want you to assess your surroundings before you react too, and so Prophet scouts out the nearby Ceph with his binoculars as he plans his route to the tower.

Staying cloaked, Prophet is able to use his composite bow to take down a nearby Ceph stood at the top of what looks like a lookout tower - a scene complimented with an ace slow-mo kill cam - before dropping down into the swampland and taking down a few other Ceph silently with his trusty blade. It’s about now though when the shit hits the fan and Prophet has to go loud, opting to bust out the big guns and take the fight to the surrounding Ceph.

The aforementioned bow is obviously one of the big new weapons, what with its auto-reload and ability to fire from being cloaked and remaining cloaked, but being able to attach different warheads means it can be used on the loud-offensive too, clearly demonstrated as Prophet attaches explosive heads and dispatches a group of Ceph rangers who are alerted to his presence. Crysis 3 allows players to pick up Cell and alien weaponry this time around too. The three big examples here are the amazing Typhoon gun, which can shoot an incredible 500 rounds a second; the monstrous plasma Ceph rifle; and the Ceph heavy mortar gun, which can decimate a small area of enemies as well as kicking off some impressive plasma particle effects at the same time. Beautiful stuff.

The next few minutes of gameplay flies by as the game opens up somewhat. Quick on the scene are some of the new enemies, the Scorchers, which like Ronseal, do exactly what they say on the tin – scorch stuff. The napalm-esque substance that these new beasts spit out lays flame to the ground beneath them and Prophet has to step back and put some distance between them before he himself becomes a charred corpse. The Typhoon, however, makes rather quick work of them with its 500 round burst and Prophet is quick to resume on his path to the mission objective.

One of the other new things in Crysis 3 is the Nanosuit’s ability to hack and manipulate certain elements within the environment to assist with your progress and turn the tides in your favour. In this instance, Prophet hacks a defence battery to turn on and distract a group of nearby Ceph, allowing him to sprint towards the objective without the preoccupied cephalopods being aware of his presence. The whole sequence ends with a bang too, with Prophet reaching the objective, being inundated by Cephs, being surprised by a Pinger and causing wanton destruction with the Ceph heavy mortar gun, all within a blurry few minutes of frenetic gameplay and cutscenes. It was an explosive end to an explosive debut showing.

Surprisingly, in combining elements of the first game with elements of the second game, Crysis 3 actually feels like a fresh new take on the franchise – you know, blending the beauty of the first game with the prowess of the second. It definitely seems more open than Crysis 2 did, but not as sandboxy as Crysis 1 was, hitting home somewhere in the middle – well, this scene did, in particular.

It’s shaping up to be a beautiful behemoth of a game with the enhanced CryEngine 3 strutting its stuff and a plethora of new hi-tech gadgetry to wield as you take on the Ceph and the Cell along the way. It’s looking like it’s more geared to stealth gameplay this time through and our inner stalker-from-within couldn’t be happier. Plus, history has taught us that anything or anyone with a bow can’t be deemed anything but cool as hell. Just ask John Rambo.

Crysis 3 is scheduled for a spring 2013 release.

@5, yea but they say that's going to be explained, i.e. We don't really know right now.

But as zombieash says it's "prophets mind" so it could be the original Prophet... in a way.

OT: loved the 1st, loved the 2nd, can't wait for the 3rd.
So far it's looking and sounding good. EA better not screw this up!

@6 it very clearly says you play as prophet from Crysis 1, not the hybrid that's left at the end of Crysis 2, who is NOT the same character from the first game. Not how it seems to me anyway, but I could be wrong.

I'm playing thru Crysis 2 now, but I'm aware of how the game ends.

@10, the only problem is *spoilers* the Prophet from No1 put a bullet through his head at the beginning of number 2.
OT: looking forward to the jungle/city hybrid location but the bow seems a bit outdated, trying to take down metal enemies??

Both Crysis games were way more enjoyable for me than most of the shooters I've played so far. This one looks to be a day one buy, same as two was when it was released. Thanks for the look Webb, you've made my "inner stalker-from-within" happy also.

@8 so it follows the same strategy of EVERY OTHER SHOOTER as far as campaign goes....

Who would have guessed?

And halo ripoff enemies? Halo didn't invent aliens -_- Just because they share the same color palette doesn't make them generic copies >_>

OT: Looking forward to this game. Now that I got my 1000/1000 in Crysis 2, I can pick up Crysis this summer, and then play Crysis 3 next year. Crysis 2, despite the criticisms, was still one of the best looking games on the console and one of the smoothest games I've ever played. Sure, it had achievement glitches. And Crytek needs to learn a thing (or five) about customer service/support. But the game itself was a blast and played beautifully.

It's still not a bloody crossbow...

@5 Dude...
SPOILERS!

Prophet died in Crysis 2...right at the beginning of the game. He shot himself right after putting the suit on Alcatraz. He lives in the suit's deep layer code or whatever they call it in game.
/Spoilers!

I really would have liked to have seen Nomad come back as the main protagonist though.

@#20 - Tom-ay-toes, tom-ah-toes, if I want to hold it sideways, I will =P

As for the whole Prophet stuff, some of you have pretty much nailed it... it's Prophet in all but body. That be dead, yo. A man is defined by his personality and not by his body, after all. The new character even has his voice.

@21 : That is still backwards-ass and totally ridiculous though. I agree with #20, I'd rather see Nomad back. This is just lazy "reviving" Prophet, almost like the writers realised that they'd killed off a good character so they just made some crazy shit up in order to bring him back.

I'm all for great characters, but when someone shoots themselves through the head and their "memories" remain in the suit, that does not equate to having Prophet essentially "possess" Alcatraz. At very most, it should be symbiotic, but no, Alcatraz might as well never have existed. It seems all too much like they weren't sure where to go with the canon, so they just dug up the "badass" guy and threw caution to the wind.

I just want some well-written consistency is all. If you're going to put emphasis on the story, do it well or don't do it all. Do not screw around with your own lore but it'll just end up biting them in arse and disappointing their fans.

I'm really hoping for a more non-linear approach to Crysis 3, it's where Crysis and Far Cry excelled in my opinion.

However, the story aspect seems a bit lazy; hunting down the rest of the Ceph.

@20 Nomad can't return.... but it'd be great to see Psycho, from the first Crysis

Good to see another Crysis, just hope they fix the online achievement problems. I think #17 said it best.

I wish more FPS's were like this and less like the military shooters that over saturate the market. The environment looks a little different from Crysis 2, hopefully different enough. I like the sci fi aspect of the game, still need to play the first tho.

@ 28 it is being made as a multi platform so it will be linear and be garbage the second was ok it was no first first was pushing everything with graphics then second it had the name so that sold it and the graphics were alright for PC but now I doubt EA will even try and have them push it. Why these companies don't realease on there own when you have a name like cyrotek do's do it on your own so your the boss and you will be amazing. i will rent not buy the second was a rent game it was garbage I honestly thought compared to the build of the first the first I baught xbox and have 2 copies for PC

As much as I had fun with Crysis 2, it was anywhere near as good as the first game.

But then tbh, I thought Crysis: Warhead was much better than the main Crysis campaign.

I'll take Psycho over Prophet, Nomad or Alcatraz thanks.

@28 Why can't nomad return? :/ Killing him off in a comic is both A. Stupid and B. Not really an excuse since APPARENTLY Prophet can resurrect himself, so why not Nomad >.>
Even without Nomad, I'd rather take Psycho..or Alcatraz again. Or anyone really.. I'm going to assume Prophet didn't age somehow so I won't complain about him being uber old. Maybe he's a clone. Or king of the Ceph. lol.

Both 1 and 2 had great single player campaigns. They were a little bit different from each other (1 being more open world and 2 being more focused) but they were both great. Now Crytek is combining the two types together, its gonna be sick as hell.

Lets just hope it doesnt take forever to get released

*spoilers about Crysis 2 ending*

In response to everyone talking about it, I've always wondered what the truth about that is. I was under the impression that the ending was hinting and making a reference to the ending of Crysis 1 where Prophet goes renegade. He reveals that the suit, after prolonged exposure, reeks havoc on your mind and eventually drives you crazy. At the end of Crysis 2, I always took this to mean that Alcatraz was just a fabrication of Prophet's mind and the gunshot to the (Prophet's) head just symbolized that he had lost his mind to the technology of the suit and that he had gone mad. That is why I think it was always Prophet the whole time, but I could be wrong..

FYI I lovedddddd Crysis 1 and 2 and I can't wait for 3! Looking forward to seeing their new engine, and was very disappointed that not too many people played MP on 2 very much... I thought it was/is one of the best MP's on the 360! I play it with one of my closest friends all the time, and we are both bummed that hardly anyone plays it. It so hard to get into the other gametypes and I'm sad that the DLC is useless simply because they are in separate gametypes (which nobody plays). Would loved to have seen extra achievements in those as well...

@46 Wow, you made up a odd theory that I don't really think the game points to at all.

SPOILERNESS

Prophet is infected and kills himself, but somehow his consciousness is also in the suit. (He said something like "Got the break the link" when he killed himself, which I suppose meant only he could operate the suit and that it was linked to his mind) Alcatraz is the one in the suit, but he is severely wounded. Because of his wounds, he can no longer speak. Prophet speaks through the suit to Alcatraz, and at the end of the game uses it to audibly speak. I haven't played it in a while or referenced anything while writing this, so it may or may not be off, but this is pretty much it. Alcatraz and Prophet are both alive, except that Prophet's body is the suit, while Alcatraz is still a living (though barely) human.
