Prey 2 Development Reportedly Suspended Since November

Bethesda released a statement yesterday, confirming that Prey 2 hasn't been cancelled and is still on the cards for release. It won't see launch this year however, which could be down to rumours that development on the FPS has reportedly been suspended since November 2011.

An anonymous source close to Shacknews has revealed that the work hiatus on Prey 2 is due to contract negotiations between developer Human Head and Bethesda parent company Zenimax. The developer apparently stopped work on the game in an attempt to broker a better deal, which in turn saw staff being laid off. Human Head had planned to rehire those staff if the contract was resolved favourably.

The future of Prey 2 had since been uncertain, as negotiations "quickly soured" around March. Zenimax declined to shed any light on the subject however, beyond yesterday's statement, telling Shacknews, "we aren't commenting on the game's development beyond what was said in the statement that was released..."

Bethesda's statement released yesterday claimed that "the delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards". Whether Human Head will be kept on board as Prey 2's developer is uncertain, but it's entirely possible that development duties could change hands.

  • Does it matter at this point? I can wait till next year..... so can my wallet.
  • I don't know what to think of Bethesda recently. They pull out amazing games like Skyrim/Fallout and say that they are a very community based, fan friendly company. Then, they go piss on a fan and try to file a lawsuit against an individual for having a fan site and generally promoting their game..... I really don't understand them. I guess if Prey 2 didn't meet their standards i really don't know why they decided to release Brink.......... Prey 2 looked for the most part amazing. Guess we will have to wait.
  • @3 You bring up a very good point with Brink...... one of the biggest disappointments of all time.
  • Ufff... Since November, that's a loooong time to be put on hold! Hope they can sort it out eventually, I kinda liked the first one...
  • Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww we have hugs to Prey because Prey 2 are now safety!! At least Prey 2 is still in our heartful safe. Thank you Bethesda for not decide cancelled!! Really pleased that leaks and fakes stories are blew up since Prey 2 not cancelled now!! 2013 seem right for Prey 2 coming into. Human Head Studios, please forced and take time to not rush of it when in devs again on it. :) Come on Prey 2!!
  • Bethesda dont start me on your game quality. Where were your quality with brink, rage and demons forge ? and not to mention your all other games have shitloads of bugs. perhaps spending a bit more on a game might make it better dont you think?
  • Wow, so how many people actually read the article? Its basically saying Human Head tried to get more money and it backfired. Nothing about Bethesda/Zenimax being greedy. And the recent press release is pretty much to say that it isn't dead, but the developer isn't doing their job properly. Also the fansite thing isn't a big deal. They own the property, he doesn't. It doesn't matter how big a fan you are, or that they aren't charging for anything. Hell, for all we know the guy who ran the site was selling email addresses or other info to people you don't want having that kind of info.
  • It frightens me that games like WET and New Vegas and Brink pass their "quality control" but yet this game has to be delayed for it. Was the game THAT bad or are they just making excuses?
  • Wasnt this reported in November anyways?
  • @7 I'm just going to fight Bethesda's corner here. Out of those 3 games, only Brink was less than brilliant, and even then wasn't bad. The others were great games, filled with that wonderful word quality. And the rest of their games with bugs can only mean Fallout and Elder Scrolls, which are open world. It's hard to make an open world game without there being some glitches. The devs who have games that dont glitch are ones with linear levels. So please, sir, don't start me on complaining about game quality. I bid you a good day!
  • @11 - Brink wasn't that bad? Did you play it the first week or so it was out? You actually COULDN'T play it for the first week it was out because it was so choppy and buggy it was unbearable. I agree the idea was pretty good and I heard they eventually patched it to be playable but I was extremely disappointed with the way that game was released. I've been a HUGE Elder Scrolls fan since Morrowind and the way Skyrim was released was disappointing as well. I haven't played that since December because of all the broken quests I had. I believe the most recent patch fixed most of what was wrong with my game but that means I waited FOUR MONTHS for the game to be playable. For $60, that's inexcusable...
  • I'm pretty sure a I got a little advertisement thingy for Prey 2 in my Skyrim box...So Prey 2 has been suspended since November and yet they were putting ads for it in games that same month...Hurray for the right and left hands not knowing what each other are doing!
  • Release the breaks. Let Prey 2 development continue. I just want to see it happen. Bethesda has a wonky track record. Games dev'd in-house are generally awesome. They're farmed out games to other developers have a less than stellar track record sadly. I'm still going to give Prey 2 a shot.
  • @7 IDK what your taling about with Rage. The game was great IMO.
  • "did not meet quality standards" So I'm guessing Rage and Brink both met these "quality standards" that Bethesda have? Protip: those two games sucked
  • @2 yes it matters. when do games with tons of delays due to developer drama ever turn out good, especially when the developer gets swapped out midway through the development cycle? this is more than just an issue of waiting, this is really bad news.
  • It's Duke Nukem all over again. First Mirrors Edge 2 and now this. GREAT!!!!!
  • liiiiiiiiimmbooooo. see you in 2019 prey 2! also #16 how the hell can you throw rage in with brink? playing through rage now and it's a great game. i mean besides being the best looking game on xbox, it is pretty damn interesting/involving. especially being an fps with little to no rpg, it's no fallout but it hardly sucks
  • all that matters is that it's coming. take long as you need to make it great!
  • I am glad to hear it is still coming.
  • @16 RAGE had fantastic gunplay, just failed in the story department. It did the whole "body parts react to getting shot" thing better than Killzone which I really enjoyed. I'm surprised many people care about Prey 2 after it was announced there would be no gravity gameplay and would simply be another linear FPS. Yawn.
  • The delays and problems with the first Prey are the stuff of legends. Sequel's just trying to live up to that.
  • OK, maybe they finally decided to can it as Prey2 and soon enought start adverstising it as different title, but pretty much same game? I hated the idea of Prey sequel from the get go so that would be a step forward=)
  • hurry up prey 2, duke nukem and aliens colonial marines are waiting for you to join the party
