THQ Will be Dead Within Six Months, Says Take-Two [Update]
Written Friday, April 06, 2012 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

[Update]

As some of you have noted, Zelnick has since expressed regret for his words. He hasn't, however, retracted them.

"While discussing our strategy I spoke out of turn about someone else’s," Zelnick told Game Informer. "It was inappropriate and I regret it."

[Original Story]

The CEO of Grand Theft Auto publishers Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, has said that THQ will cease to exist within the next six months, owing to their current financial problems.

The statement has prompted an angry response by THQ’s corporate communications vice president Angela Emery, who has suggested that Zelnick “would be better off commenting on his own business.”

Zelnick made the claim at the MIT Business in Gaming conference yesterday, indicating that poor quality games and an abundance of licensed titles are responsible for THQ’s troubles.

"THQ's strategy was licensed properties, first and foremost. License stuff from other people, whether it's UFC or WWE or a motion picture property, and make a game around that," Zelnick explained. "And our approach, since we took over the company, is 100 per cent owned intellectual property."

Zelnick said that making licensed games leaves publishers at the mercy of the license holder, who has complete control over the contracts. He added that although THQ has begun to change direction in that regard, it will still take a long time for it to come to fruition. Too long, in fact.

"The most important difference is quality,” said, comparing the two publisher’s fortunes. “Take-Two has the highest quality ratings among third-party publishers, according to Metacritic and most people in the industry. Quality really, really, really matters. THQ has had some good games, but their quality levels aren't even remotely... the quality hasn't measured up.

"THQ won't be around in six months," he concluded.

Zelnick’s comments have prompted a response from THQ, who were far from impressed. "Obviously, Mr. Zelnick's perception of THQ is outdated and inaccurate,” said corporate communications vice president Angela Emery. “His comments are irresponsible and false. Perhaps he would be better off commenting on his own business."

Regardless of either party’s comments, the fact is that THQ are struggling financially. The publisher has had to lay off a number of staff following the poor performance of some of their titles. They also recently scaled down plans for a Warhammer MMO, developing it into a single-player game instead.

If this is what's truly going to happen, it's a good thing I didn't buy any stock when it was $1 recently. I was thinking of snatching up a bunch.

Wether or not that is the case with THQ, maybe he should just keep his opinions to himself and concentrate on his own work/company. THQ do release high quality games, so I don't see any reason for him to slate them as he did.

Im with number 8! I have always enjoyed saints row alot more than gta! obviously games before saints row 1 don't count because there was nothing to compare gta to.

Also I reserved darksiders 2 just a day or two ago. They better not die because i'm going to want some quality DLC and updates. They need to stay alive to support the game!

You know, I love the UFC game too, but the quality of the online servers of ANY THQ game make me say, "Maybe he's onto something." I don't know about THQ folding entirely, but they're definitely not in good shape.

I used to like THQ but after the disgrace that was the WWE12 servers, (that still dont work nearly 6 months later), I hate them with a passion, atleast the other money grabbing comapanies like Ea and Activision release games that actually work.

It just sounds like he's trying to downplay saints row 3's success like they have been since it it was close to release, in order to stay relevant. It seems to me like they want to aggressively maintain a monopoly on free roam crime shooters. Why else would they release GTA V's trailer a few days before saints dropped after years of keeping it quiet? I think the dont like competition because it makes them feel threatened. And if he wants to talk "quality", yeah their games are violently fun but pre-Red Dead I didnt see much quality in their graphics department.

I think THQ will be fine. That's not to say they don't need to rethink quality though. They have been slipping over the last calendar year or so. I'd hate to lose a competitive publisher to something so stupid.

There may be an element of truth though in what Zelneck has said. THQ do need to sort their lives out when it comes to anything other than the Saints series or anything to do with the Games Workshop licenses.

UFC doesn't interest me one bit and that's one of the other franchises that I can think of. Red Faction has died on it's arse, but I think that's because they tried to take it in the wrong direction. If they had made a bigger and better version of RF: Guerilla, than they might have had a massive sandbox hit on their hands to rival that of Saints or even GTA.

If they do die on their feet, it will be because of all of the movie tie-in games that they have released and haven't sold very well.

It will of course be a shame. No-one wants to hear of people losing their jobs.

That's down to opinion. I frankly find Saints row extremely boring. The cops are FAR too incompetent, which basically removes any aspect of fun from a rampage. San Andreas is still vastly superior, In my opinion, in terms of fun compared to Saints row, or GTA IV for that matter.

THQ has fallen on hard times but I don't think they're beyond saving. Darksiders, Saints Row, Metro 2033, Warhammer 40k, Red Faction (I know the series is on hold indefinitely), and even WWE are all franchises worth keeping alive and that more people probably should be playing. I think they need to up the quality of some of the titles they are publishing and market them better. Here's to hoping that THQ doesn't go under anytime soon.

Their marketing division has been really flawed lately. First U-Draw, which I have no idea why they segmented a market for people that want a tablet just to play like 4 games (The ideas for U-Draw would have been really limited anyways, success or not.)

They also spent a lot of money on Homefront, a game that's just another Call of Duty/Battle Field in terms of Multiplayer FPS catering. Releasing a new franchise in an already over-saturated market with a Campaign that is forgettable, it's flirting with disaster.

THQ needs to re-evaluate their marketing strategies is all which they've done well in Saints Row: The Third. I've always enjoyed their games and respect them for not trying to be one trick ponies all the time *cough* Activision *cough*.

"And our approach, since we took over the company, is 100 per cent owned intellectual property."

I was not aware that Take Two owned MLB, NBA, and Nickelodeon. I'm sure there are more, but those are licensed games I know of that Take Two has published this past year. If he wants to talk Metacritic scores for publishers I believe Take Two ranked 4th or 5th amongst 3rd party publishers this past year, not first

Lee, is referring to a company as a group of people a British thing?

I'm not saying you're wrong, It just sounds weird to me. Im used to referring to a company as a single entity.

So for examle as a single entity:
THQ is having financial problems.

versus a group:
THQ are having financial problems.

Like i said, not saying you're wrong. Just wondering if its a colloquial thing.

Considering the backlash from Saint's Row 3 poor story and disrespect to the fans as well as its poor DLC. I have no reason to belive THQ can make a comeback. Saint's Row 4 will not sell as well as 3 because they ticked off a lot of fans and the WWE and UFC games can't save them either.

THQ needs to stop making movie based games since most are know for being bad.

i can see this happing to THQ. dumb idea on warhamner, THQ would make a mint off of an MMO. heres why;

take the MMO WOW (world of warcraft). after watcting TED TV on netflix, heres what WOW makes. 748 million on game sales. 83.5 million on sub fees a month. cost to produce game is 80 million. so just off of a month of subs. they make their money back. not to mention how much they mske in sales too. the smart move for THQ is to make wzrhammer an MMO. MS has to strick a poilicy to put an MMO on the 360. but it would work for PS3 & PC. facts not fiction. warhammer has a big enough following to make close to the amount WOW does.

we wont see anouther MMO on any MS system unless MS changes their ways. champions online was proof of that. cryptic eventually said the proablem was MS wanted a seperate server for CO for the 360. this would be costly too. not to mention the other things MS has in place. which prevents MMOs to work on the 360. things like file sizes need to be a certain size or MS will charge for them. ie free patches, extra. but this is what THQ needs to do now! make a really good MMO or sink. they are sinking so they need to make a move soon to save the company.

@8 gta has quality that saints just could never match. Saints row has always felt like a really half assed game to me. Cars appear and disappear out of nowhere, the game is plagued by constant game breaking glitches and the second you hit an open area the framerate slows to a crawl ( the opening mission in saints 2 on the boat was so awful I had a really hard time continuing playing ). GTA shines next to saints in terms of overall game quality and quite honestly everything saints row does feels like a shitty rehash of gta San Andreas.

@34 Dont know if you know it but there was an Warhammer 40K MMO planned called "Dark Millenium Online" last week it was i think THQ announced that it isnt an MMO anymore - they didnt get an investor and just dont have enough Money to produce it... :/ I fear when THQ falls Activision will get the Warhammer 40K license and if that happens we better brace ourself for a shitload of annual mediocre releases :/

i personally think that grand theft auto is a let down. Saints row 3 has been funnier and more entertaining. Company of heroes was an absolutely great rts and i really think thq need to focus all their attention on smashing another rts out of the ballpark. i think dawn of war 3 or some other new sci fi rts would be extremely refreshing if done correctly with base building, heroes that can be levelled and a persistant unlock system. Please dont die thq i love rts games.

@47 The story was dumb and didn't make sense at many points, main character being killed for no reason, lazy missions that are just activities, Angel was a bad character,Season pass was a rip off and false advertisement.Disc locked content, weak customization.

Saint's Row 2 was just an all around better game. Great story, vaste customization, more activities and diversions.

SR3 was just a bad game to be the third one in a series if SR3 was the first game in any other series then it would have been better.Saint's Row was never supposed to be anti GTA it was a serious story with jokes. Sr3 is just one big joke like BulletStorm only BulletStorm was trying to have bad humor.

U-Draw put them in this mess and licensed games (which was most of U-Draw) didn't help.

I was pretty pissed about them killing the Red Faction series but they have published some quality games like all 3 Saints Row games, Red Faction Guerrilla, and Metro 2033. I really want to see Last Light released.

I am wrestling fan, and a gamer. So THQ was one of the first publisher I knew of (Apart from EA). Besides, WWE, THQ makes Darksiders, UFC, Saint Row. I really don't think (and pray) that it won't close down. they just need to improve their Online Servers (WWE'12 was ghastly in that respect).
But all in all I am a loyalist, and I don't see THQ sinking just yet.
