GRID Freezing Problems Acknowledged By Codemasters

GRID Freezing Problems Acknowledged By Codemasters
Written Tuesday, June 03, 2008 by Dan Webb

It appears more and more people are having slowdown issues with their copy of the latest Codemasters game, Grid. Gamers are making their issues known on the Codemasters forums in a huge 11 page thread.

Fear not wannabe drivers,  Codemasters are already working on a fix according to the Grid's Executive Producer. Forum staffer, Uncle Chewy who we presume is Gavin Raeburn said "We're close to getting to the root of the problem and we will be including a fix and a backup workaround option (just in case) in our forthcoming patch due within the next few weeks or sooner. We think the issue is due to specific drive hardware, possibly with bad blocks /sectors."

What should gamers do in the meantime? Chewy suggests that "The best temporary measure is to copy your gamertag to a mem card, remove the hard drive and run the game that way. Replays and caching will be disabled, though instant replay will still work as this caches to memory."

Sit tight race addicts, the patch isn't far away.

Was going to get this tomorrow but not now. No excuse for Codemasters not to know - don't they test?

it's impossible to catch every problem that may exist on the multitudes of different hardware that exists in the world

its not hard to test for console games since they all have set parameters and you don't have to worry about different graphics cards, cpu, etc. that you have to worry about with PC. This was more than likely a bug that they found late into testing and decided that it wouldn't be a big enough problem, especially one that won't delay the release of the game. Probably didn't happen to enough of the testers either to warrant them to delve deeper into the problem.

Unacceptable. In the days before updates this game would be considered broken. I hate the way game makers are launching titles that still need work only to update them "within the next few weeks." In the meantime gamers can GFY and wait with their broken games. Why the hell would I buy a memory card to play this? I'd return it and buy it "within the next few weeks" when it's cheaper on the used rack and they have finished developing it.

@MrRedrum:
I work for a company that does QA testing for games. You would be greatly surprised on how different consoles, even on the same hardware and firmware, react. Some consoles just do not work properly, no matter what you do with them. Also, you cannot account for what 1+ million people have the opportunity to see once the game is released, especially when the amount of testers on the project amounts to about 20 people. Even if the issue only happens once during the testing cycle, that possibility is expanded 3000x+ after release.

Just food for thought on that aspect. It seems to be related to caching from that comment, which is actually a common problem that is not encountered during testing.

Hmm... Didn't Codemasters release a game a few months back, Sensible World of Soccer or something like that, that also had problems similiar to this right at release? If so, that's starting to be a bad track record for the company.

Having had a single problem for the two days i've played it, like 10 hours or so actual play time.

Well Circuit City has all there copies of GRID delayed through online. I don't know what the reasoning for it is, but it could be related to this.

Regardless, I sadly had to cancel my pre-order for GRID to pay for more important things

Continued...

You have no idea as to how many issues that you run into once your game ships (even with the best QA Department in the industry). Some of these issues will not occur during the testing process.

How can you say that? Maybe you don't like their games, but you can't call them the worst when so many awful companies exist. You might not enjoy their games, but you can not question their games technical aspects to such an extent that they are labeled the "worst"

Well, at least they can fix it. Everyone should simmer down at least they're doing something about it (still waiting on my split screen mr.driller action on XBLA but I know I'm not gonna be getting that).

@Shadow Kisuragi

I know the processes for testing as I was a video game tester for too long. I never tested the 360 or PS3 so I can't say how testing goes for it, but with the testing I'm familiar with, you would run on released consoles in conjunction with "testing consoles" running off of roms, hard drive, discs, etc.

Anyways, I'm fully aware about how consoles will run into problems, I was just merely stating that they don't have to go through the same problems that PC games have to go through. Also, the reason why I am sure that this came up in testing is because it got big enough to warrant an acknowledgement. Depending on how many testers were actually testing I'm sure it came up at least once and was duplicated, thus resulting in a write up. I just didn't want to write more a

I've had no issues but there again my gamer profile is on my Mem Card. I think its the same with each game e.g. GTAIV because it never happens to everyone but usually older consoles struggle.

This isn't a massive problem. It's just like the machine is caching, you get a seconds pause or so, completely randomly, sometimes it'll go an hour without a hiccup, sometimes it won't. I didn't find it particularly prominent in the actual races, but it did affect the replays.

All the doom mongers, please get a grip! It's by no means a deal breaker and unlike some dev's, Codies have put their hands up and got straight on to fixing the problem. That's what a decent dev does.

The game is mint, and I have enjoyed it thoroughly so far, hitches or no hitches.

Oh, and Boofarama, if you think Codies are the 'worst' developer out there, then you clearly live quite a sheltered existence. Colin McRae, TOCA, Dirt, Grid, good Lord if you are as old as me then the likes Dizzy too, all classics.

Go and play tripe like Jumper, VP: Party Animals and Avatar, then put the ol' grey matter in gear before speaking next time...

GRID.... Terrible game... sorry guys if that upsets you, just my own personal opinion.... no setting up of your cars, they handle terribly with STUPID spinning around and around in circles!!! Oh and dont even dare touch the grass a little bit otherwise you'll spin around and around... hang im going dizzy... sorry but GRID isn't all it's made up to be... unlike DIRT (quality game)

@morgenes 47 & Anyone else who say something like they don't test

The freezing isn't something constant, this is actually the first I've heard of any freezing, I've not had any problems with it what so ever.

@Whitewolf

GRiD is probably the best racing game out now in my opinion, tuning your cars isn't a nessessity, it's just nice to have the option, not everyone finds it as fun as you may do, the handling is a bit off but if you're racing in real life and you touch the grass in the wrong way you're going to spin, you don't always spin when you touch grass because I've gone right across sometimes and had no issue, you spin because one or two wheels touch the grass and that side now has less traction than the wheels on the tarmac, meaning they're able to move forward while the ones

Excellent game even if there are a few early teething problems. I have personally have done the majority of this game apart from 5 of the achievements but can only see 1 of them giving me some challenge at all. so all in all quite a easy racing game from codemasters. Only problem i have had with faults with the game though are that i had 500 miles on the clock of one of my cars and then all of a sudden the game freaked put my clock back to 0 miles and everytime i have driven the car since the clock hasnt moved from its 0 miles.

People slam developers/testers far too easily these days for these types of things. They work ridiculous hours round the clock to put a product out there for us to enjoy. Mistakes are inevitable and we shouldn't be so quick to point the finger. GRID is an awesome game which Codemasters should rightly be proud of bringing us. Okay it has this problem, but no doubt they'll fix it and all will be forgotten. Everyone makes mistakes right?

This happened to me. I simply moved my save to my memory unit for the time being as there are no freezing problems.

It caches the data to the hard drive (replay data) but doesn't do that when on memory unit. It is preferred to be cached as you can rewind/fast-forward a lot more smoother when cached on hard drive. It still saves the replay to the internal memory (RAM, I guess?) but when you rewind/fast-forward it doesn't feel as smooth.

I have had the game for some time, and have no freezing problems. Codemasters are one of the oldest developers out there. Before Sony and Microsoft even thought about gaming.

Give them a break, The game is Awesome, Funny with you friends and beautiful to boot.

What more can i say, For once europe get it first. And i for one am glad.

Enjoy the game for what it is. A Pick up and play Car game, with excellent online gameplay

Funny, there was a similar article about Grand Theft Auto and freezing, and people still bought that by the ton, and also had issues with Bully before that. But you say Codemasters is bad and they suck for putting out a niche racing game that won't sell anywhere near the amount of copies GTA4 did?

Heck, I bet half the people complaining weren't buying GRID anyway, so why waste my time.

No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
