Dragon's Lair

Dragon's Lair Heading to XBLA With Kinect Controls
Written Tuesday, March 20, 2012 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

Most games are happy to exist on the one platform, but since its original launch waaaay back in 1983, Dragon's Lair has made its way to no less than 66 platforms. Now it's setting its sights on the Xbox Live Arcade as the 67th, with the animated Don Bluth adventure in the offing.

Dragon's Lair on XBLA will be enhanced with Kinect support, which will be optional, and will enable you to play through Dirk the Daring's ubiquitous tale of derring-do with or without motion control.

Kinect should offer a nice new way to play through Dragon's Lair for the 67th time, and it looks like the action will be aided by little silhouette icons, as shown in these first screenshots below. Check 'em out, then look forward to more Dragon's Lair XBLA details, like a release date and price, in due course.

Is this Kinect only?

That would be a fairly large disappointment, were it the case.

@1 - It did state that the feature was "optional". Apparently not everyone can read or are just too lazy.

I remember trying to play this game in the Arcades when I was too little to comprehend the controls. After several failed attempts I resorted to being one of those kids that woudl play other games in the arcade and watching/re-watching the Dragon's Lair video clips. I would probably pick up this game just to catch up on the stuff I originally missed with this classic.

I can't believe people are more interested in being first than actually reading the article. I mean, just skim reading the article would answer your question and would probably be just as quick as writing a comment.

So anyway, I've never played Dragon's Lair in my life and I'm looking forward to see how this one turns out.

@7 I would spend hours at my local arcade playing and watching this game.

Here's hoping theyll be bringing out the Dragan's Lair animation. Dirk the Daring spending each week trying to save Princess Daphne... Classic

This game was stunning back in the 80's when it came to the local arcade. There was always at least a dozen kids crowded around trying to watch. The game play kind of blew though. Just a matter of shifting the controller in the right direction when something flashed or timing the attack button.

It would be worth it for nostalgia if it was priced right (400 MSP)but after a playthrough it would be forgotten. Like the guy above me with all the thumbs downs said, it s kind of one long QTE.

Use to love this game was never good at it though, roughly around the same time there was another game big screen with a gun done in movie clips very mafia/gangster theme based. It would show a clip of a man bringing in a box and depending on what you did when opened would be a box of roses or a machine gun! Then you would proceed to the next clip.maybe not the best way to explain it but would be great if anyone can remember what it was as I thought this was very hi Tec at the time and would love to see this come to xbla.

@15 Time Gal was awesome. The intro was awesome too.

Road Avenger and Cobra Command were the same sort of game too on Mega CD - Road Avenger was my favourite of the three (and it also had an awesome intro, although very cheesy).

Going to have to crack out my Mega CD and play those games after thinking about this! :)

Or rather #6 isn't very good at reactions at all.

I love games like Dragon's Lair, the main thing isn't about the gameplay, it's more about the story and how well an animated game can turn out.

When I posted (#1), the "which will be optional" was not there.

"Enhanced" was misleading, so I asked.

Get over it, people.

I never really understood the point of having this as a 'game'. It's basically just a film that you interact with at times. But that's just me.

I am betting you could find this on DVD for cheaper than whatever it will be on XBLA. But god forbid you don't get achievements for it (inb4 'lol it's called xbox360ACHIEVEMENTS' like I can't read the name of a NEWS site).

Cue "Thumbs Down" for opinions.

Hope they release Space Ace as well. It was a better game, as there were several paths you could take in the game.

Think Space Ace is already out on PS3, so it shouldn't take much to port it over to the green side!

So many great memories of this game. I recall the arcade game didn't last too long due to the cabinet being bashed about a fair bit due to players not knwing how to control Dirk. Mostly played the Commodore 64 version at home as a kid.

I've been wondering when a game would come along that I would consider playing Kinect with...maybe this is it?

Whatever the cost, it's a day 1 buy for me.

I had played Dragon's Lair on Gamecube back in 2003 when launched and I enjoyed cos this got lots of action/platformer but new XBLA title got more of QTE and less action for this. No buy thanks but will try out by trials first. :)

Never got to play this on arcade but had it on home computer as a kid and apart from looking amazing (don bleuth animations always do) the game was a broken mess considering its a one button game the response time was dire and was impossible to enjoy...kinect has a lot to prove with no must have games as yet, strangely this could really work for both the game and kinect fingers crossed it's playtested this time so can enjoy what I missed not playing the arcade version...:)
