Kinect Star Wars Preview – Using the Force or Fit For the Sarlacc Pit?

It’s been quite a while since we’ve checked out Terminal Reality, LucasArts and Microsoft’s Kinect Star Wars. It’s safe to say that things weren’t looking that great way back in July of last year when we last saw the game, so we went into Microsoft’s Spring Showcase very sceptical, but with our minds completely open. We wanted to believe. We wanted to be swayed – we love Star Wars, after all – but based on this latest viewing, it’s hard to see how it’s going to appeal to the inner Jedi in us.

That’s not to say that Kinect Star Wars is looking as terrible as it did last time, oh no, Terminal Reality looks to have tightened up the “controls” and responsiveness and it looks a hell of a lot better, but it puzzles us as to who Microsoft is appealing to with this title. It’s not the core gamer, that’s for sure.

Kinect Star Wars is a multi-faceted title but the main pillar of the game is the Jedi adventure, where you jump into the shoes of a Padawan and take the fight to the Empire all over the galaxy. Set after the events of Episode I, leading up to the Clone Wars, Kinect Star Wars takes you on an adventure that sets up some of the events that take place in Episodes II and III, so it’s looking sure to appeal to Star Wars fans.

Starting off on the Wookie planet of Kashyyyk in the Jedi base experience, you’ll visit places like Coruscant and Felucia, presumably on your way to becoming a fully-fledged Jedi. We pick up proceedings with a Jedi of the Twi'lek variety, kicking ass and taking names with the Wookies on Kashyyyk. You’ll even get the chance to fight against comparatively lesser races in the Star Wars world, like the Trandoshans who appeared in The Empire Strikes Back.

Utilising Kinect you’ll be able to use your hands to control the force, wield a lightsaber, force push, grab guys, lift them up, jump over enemies, throw enemies, break through things, lift up and throw objects as well as kick. The extra development time seems to have done the game a world of good, but whether that’ll be enough, only time will tell.

The other major aspect of Kinect Star Wars is the game’s pod racing. LucasArts likens it to a whole driving game on its own, although that might be a bit of a stretch, although you are able to upgrade your pod as you race across 4 different planets with 8 different races on each – visiting a variety of locations referenced and seen in the Star Wars films. In short, think the races that Anakin gets involved in against Sebulba on Tatooine in Episode I. That’s Kinect Star Wars’ pod racing mode right there.

Players will be able to pick up power-ups, knock womp rats off their pod, boost, and even choose between the ideal race path or even venture off to find shortcuts. You’ll also find similar experiences with the speeder bike, the land speeder, even space flight, all within the full Jedi campaign. In terms of controls though, simple about sums it up, reminding us of how Kinect JoyRide controlled… and we all know how that turned out!

Other than that, players can get involved in a dancing mini-game with a half naked Princess Leia, cause havoc with a Rancor in Mos Eisley and even partake in Jedi duels that don’t necessarily fall into the same timeline that the rest of Kinect Star Wars does. These quick-time event style gameplay duels allow you to wield the force and different powers to take on formidable opponents like Darth Vader and you can even crank on the 3D if you’ve got a compatible TV and experience it all in stereoscopic 3D.

I’m going to come right out and say it now though, but a Kinect-only title that will appeal to the core gamer out there – the kind of people that frequent our site – and be solely controlled by Kinect may never be possible. It may be a sweeping statement, but what we’ve seen from the device since its release, in terms of titles, has done nothing to sway us or persuade us otherwise. The way forward for Microsoft surely has to be hybrid controller-Kinect titles – look out for the Steel Battalion preview in the coming weeks, it may surprise you like it did us – because the device doesn’t seem to have the depth that core gamers want. That said, we’ll reserve our final judgement on Kinect Star Wars until we’ve had chance to blitz through the whole game when it ships in April, but until then, we’ll remain cautiously sceptical. Whatever we say though, Star Wars fans will flock in their millions to buy it, if only to be able to dance with a scantily clad Princess Leia.

Kinect Star Wars is scheduled for an April 3rd and April 6th release in North America and Europe respectively.

I want a cool-looking star wars Xbox 360 white console with 3P0 controllers! It's a must-have for me!

'Star Wars fans will flock in their millions to buy it, if only to be able to dance with a scantily clad Princess Leia.'

It just isn't true though, is it? I'm not having a dig at Webb, because the rest of the article is very good, but people just won't buy this game (People with any sense, that is). People want good Star Wars games such as the Force Unleashed series, and the old KOTOR games. Kinect Star Wars? I just don't see the appeal.

i get what you mean Dan. lets take mass effect for example, it would be fucking cool to controll shepard with your controller and then be able to throw a grenade using hand motions, that way you can still move but also use actions with kinect, if that sort of controll was utilised properly i will buy a kinect instantly, but whilst they churn out zumba or kiddy games like this i shall pass

This for me is where a great concept has not materialised. We had massive high hopes for a great kinect enabled star wars game since its release.

They have strung a long and the end product is a mediocre kinect title (something that im hearing a lot of since it came out ) and some stupid filler content.

Yes it maybe fun, but so is shoplifting . It doesn't make it right though.

Says something when the best kinect titles are shooting plastic cowboys and slicing fruit in half.

@#3 - The informed and the uninformed in terms of consumers are two different things. I consider 99.9% of the users here as the informed, so no, chances are we won't buy it, but we make up a small percentage of the overall market. To me, anything with Star Wars on it will sell... even Episode 1 on Blu-Ray =P

#3 - yeah, they (we!) do. i'd love to play a star wars RPG like KOTOR, although a story during the galactic civil war would be even better. but games like star wars kinect make sense too. maybe it's not me, that will play these games, but lots of people like such arcade games. and remember, that they also aim at teen (and younger) audience, with this one.
nevertheless - i'm looking forward to some star wars RPG like skyrim or fallout.

@4 so true!
@3 we all said we wouldn't support lucas after he added hayden ballsac over the end of jedi yet here we sit and Lucas is still doing the same crap

OT: back when I first heard about this I was so excited, then I saw it and was less excited, then I saw the special console and got REALLY excited, then it got delayed and I couldn't care, then The achivement list came out and I almost cried, and now this.... dammnit Lucas listen to your fans!!!

It will take time to be honest. I am very excited for this game and I think it will be fun. I am not expecting a Halo, Call of Duty, Mass Effect or gears of war experience. I am picking up the bundle when it comes in.

"Whatever we say though, Star Wars fans will flock in their millions to buy it, if only to be able to dance with a scantily clad Princess Leia."

Honestly, the dance part of the game has me the least excited. I don't really care about it as I had already purchased Just Dance 3 as part of a Best Buy promotion back in the fall knowing I would get the star Wars XBOX bundle.

Overall, I am looking forward to it. I am not, along with the kinect, expecting earth shattering changes. It is a step in the right direction but will take time.

The main reason (among others) i'm probably not buying this game is I would have to dance in sections of it. so much for trying to appeal to players with a scantily clad leia

@8 and 9 Good points, well made. I stand by my opinions, and I am aware that people will still buy this, no matter what people say or think about it. A Star Wars RPG like Skyrim would be awesome, but the Star Wars The Old Republic game that Bioware did is very good. If you get the chance, play it.

Agree with everything #10 said on topic. With the way it's looking I might not enjoy the main story, but if you get the console, you get the game. Doesn't mean you can't give it back :)

Only getting this game because it comes with the r2d2 360, which is what I really want out of this whole deal. I have a feeling that many gamers are going to get this game only because it comes packed in with the system. I am taking delivery of a brand new 1911 the week before this comes out. I hope my first use of that is not blowing large-caliber holes through this game.

Just to nitpick... there was no "empire" to fight between episode 1 and 2. That's not me being star wars geek, my 6-year old often points that truth out to me.

Speaking of 6-year olds... I think this game is partially designed with young gamers in mind, and I intend to pick it up just for my kids... but I'll probably find some fun in it as well.
