Come home, want to play online (buying OP if I haven't got one already) only to find out they shut down the servers.
More reasons to vote against online achievements and Online Passes.
I didn't want to buy KoA Reckoning at first knowing this garbage company was the publisher but I do know now that it was the last EA published game I'll ever buy.
No loss for me, voting with my wallet.

However, games with an online pass are a no buy for me either (unless I bought them at release or close to it, like BF3).

Do you really think they would shut down servers of a game a lot of people are still playing?
Reducing costs by shutting down the servers of the games listed in the article is what every person in their right mind would do, that way they can support the more popular games and invest money in new ones.
EA Servers (BF3) over any Player Hosted Server (COD) any day of the week!
So stop bitching.

@35 what a completely uninformed and worthless opnion. if you knew anything about running servers and server maintenance. then you would understand the VERY VERY little ammount of money to have 1 or 2 dedicated servers running virtual server clients that could run and maintain dozens of games at a time (since the player base is lower). EA makes plenty of money to keep a dozen or so dedicated servers for their older games even without the online pass which is sold extra. this is a greedy marketing stragety to DEvalue older (and likely used) games and force you to purchase the newest title (and hopefully another online pass) the sports games are teh worst because online multiplayer is a big part of a sports game expierence. and EA is pretty lazy about comming out with genuinly NEW features to the games(mostly just roster adn stat updates that could just as easily be done with a downloaded update) ITS JUST WRONG and i will be boycoting EA games in the future i think. as a consumer dedicated to their product YOU ARE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. companies like EA think its your privlage to pay them more and more for less and less and your only way to protest is with your wallet.

Presumably, DLC like the Midnight Club in Saboteur authenticates to unlock the feature in the game? If that's the case, then we'll just lose access to content we have on our HDDs? Crazy, EA.. you HAVE to sort this out.
Forget online passes - some of you need to be smart about what you rally against - the concept of losing access to things we already paid for and have using up space on our consoles is paramount. I don't really believe that online petitions serve much purpose, but has anyone got an SENSIBLE ideas on how EA take note of this and give them enough time to put anything in place to fix things such as the Saboteur DLC issue?

It sucks everytime EA shutdown their servers of some game. I hope this doesn't happen soon to titles like Brutal Legend and Monopoly Streets. I still need the online achievements on those two.
I think that, everytime EA shutdown their servers, they should lanch a patch that would make all games Player Hosted Matches instead of official servers. That way, we could get the online achievements after the official servers shutdown.

Everyone quit your whining against EA. From a business standpoint it makes perfect sense to shut down servers that aren't being played much. As #51 said, 7 people were playing that game...7! If that's as low a number as it takes then clearly a majority of games are still going to be up and running for a long time.
Online play has spoiled so so many of you. If there's a game that you haven't played in one or two years, then there's a good chance you're not going to go back to it anytime soon, or at all whether it has online play or not. It's a simple fact for any company to shut down online play.
As for everyone complaining about online passes - buy the game NEW then you don't have to pay extra! If you don't want to buy it 'new' from a shop for 40 pound then just wait a week or two and buy it 'new' from Amazon or somewhere where they drop the price but still have the game un-opened with the online pass intact. It's not that big of a problem, people like just complaining about everything these days it seems

The idiots supporting EA for making a "sound business decision" are overlooking an important fact: it is EA's choice to host their own servers. Why do they use their own servers rather than MS's? So they can track your game usage and market to you better. It makes EA more profitable, but when it is your money they are using as profit, don't sit there and take it blithely, you fucking sheep.
Note: this does not even take into account just how little money it takes to run an online server. Sorry, but EA does not get a pass on this one.
Buy EA games used. If you absolutely must have an online pass, buy it from Ebay. Share those games and the online passes with everybody you can. EA does not care one bit how you feel about them, but they damn sure care about money.

As for the shutdowns, my friend will be gutted about Burnout Revenge, but I honestly can't see many people mourning the titles listed.
Saboteur doesn't really lose anything (nude scenes and a mini game)
EA MMA nobody was playing apart from a handful of dedicated boosters (small community straight from the off)
Godfather 2 multiplayer - Nothing of value was lost
EA Sports active - Never played, but lol kinect as most people tend to say on here anyway
Spare Parts was fun, but short. Can't see anyone losing sleep over that one.
Need For Speed - I can't comment on as I've never played it. Would imagine it's dead though now anyway - it's difficult to get games on Hot Pursuit which came out after that.
I know Burnout still has a small community, and that people will be sad to see that one go, but it has had it's time. If you still need the achievements for it, it's not like you haven't had long enough to get them.
As far as shutdown lists go, this is probably the best result we could have got. Much less annoying than previous years shutdowns. I get that people who paid for online passes would be mad though. I see the point of the system, but clearly it's flawed.

@56 and others like you:
You're all being stupid. What if people don't buy a game until after it's been released for a little while, or what if people simply don't want to buy the game at a full big price of $60 or £40 or what have you?
There are plenty of games that are not necessarily worth the full price that games are. I've bought plenty games new and full-priced but I've also bought plenty later on, etc.
It's stupid things like this trying to force people to give the maximum amount of money -- e.g. buying pre-owned then requiring a pass. Further, if you don't really know about a game or you just decide to buy it down the road, look at that: I'm sure more than a decent amount of people have bought some of these games lately and they're learning that online will be shut down in just a few weeks.
It's plainly unfair, and everyone complaining that EA is losing money--don't give any of us that shit. It costs them next to nothing (comparatively to their profits) to host a few servers for older games, ESPECIALLY when they claim that server demand (i.e. number of players) is low. That means the cost is even LESS to host the servers.
EA has enough money to be set forever and they will never bankrupt at this rate. So they have no need to shut this shit down other than to pocket extra funds and let people waste hard-earned money on this crap.
Take note, none of these games even remotely affect me. But it's a horrible principle.

You have to know that some readers aren't reading beyond the headline before unleashing the hate. The headline shouldn't help them get to that point.

Now for those people who say "its business" I have a newsflash, when you charge people $ for a online pass and then you take the ability away from them to actually play online, then that's a bad business decision..that will set them back in the Future

Godfather 2 and The Saboteur have no online achievements, Burnout Revenge came out 6 years ago, and NFS: Prostreet 5 years ago.
The only one people should take issue with is the MMA game, but it didn't sell well, and the community was very small right from the get go. A failed experiment if you will to try and tackle the THQ UFC games.
People are getting hot under the collar about something that most likely doesn't even affect them, just because it's EA.

so you buy the game, and you wanna play it online, but wait you cant, because no one else is playing it online. even if the server stayed open forever on some of those games doesnt guarantee that you'll get a match. if you're the only person trying to play it you wont find a match.
and they are giving advance notice to everyone about the shutdown, which they dont have to do either. you now have 3 weeks to play these games online. go to town. the announcement actually helps people who recently got these games and want to play online because now maybe they will find some matches before the shutdown.
here's a tip to all those complaining: go play your games online and you wont ever have to worry about them being shutdown. if every person on this site that is bitching and moaning about the server shutdown were actually online playing the games they are complaining about being shutdown then they wouldnt be shutdown in the first place.

With the Saboteur I think that only applies to those who buy the game after the cut off date...meaning that you won't be able to have access to the Midnight Show.
@#55 If you haven't played Saboteur you should pick it up. It was a good game, a mix of Mercenaries and WWII shooters. Also probably easy to pick up under $20-15 new at this point.
As far as the Midnight Show, it's just a basement club under the Belle. (strip/cabaret club) your first safe house in the game. If you don't get access to it, you're not missing out on much,a game where you throw knives at a spinning wheel to win a gold car (which doesn't stack up to the race cars you'll unlock) and some one on one videos of 3 girls dancing topless (there are still boobs in the upper club so chill out kiddies)

It's the principle of the matter that people are complaining about.
EA are closing down servers for games that require an online pass. DESPITE, in the fast, going on the record and stating that the Online pass will safeguard the features of a game for a few years.

I can see both sides of this argument but it seems that those who argue the most against EA are those who are completionists(for achievements). Well the only thing I can tell you is to get the game ASAP and get those achievements so you don't have to worry. I mean it's not the end of the world and it's not EA's responsibility if you don't get those achievements. It does make sense for EA to shut down servers when rarely anyone is on to play those games. However, it does suck for gamers who purchase the online pass and get screwed by not being able to access the online after paying for it. Maybe EA should rethink their strategy and have an expiration date as soon as a game comes out or guarantee 2-3 years of a game being online before shutting down servers. I don't know just throwing out ideas. There's no reason for some of you to be so hostile, it's not the end of the world that EA is shutting down their servers.

I think next time Command & Conquer 3 will be on the list, hopped online for the first time after getting the game a while back and it said 20 people were online.. Bad Company 1 seems to have a quite large max ranked player base, always end up in a game with full ranked enemy team when I play. The official stats page is gone unfortunately. :/
But yeah, online passes have nothing to do with ensuring server longevity. Just another way to grab quick revenue.

I've been done purchasing EA games since in Madden 09 when a player on mine got injured and the game offered me to "fix" my player for 160MSP. I will not support such a money hungry company. I do rent their games, because some are definitely worth playing, just don't want anymore of my money going directly to them.
The only games I purchased/will purchase by EA was/is BF3 & Dead Space 3.

If EA spent more time worrying about security and stopping the FIFA 12 money laundering scam and less time worrying about closing servers, everyone would be better off. But no, it's all about the money, making as much money as possible while screwing the customers.
It's bad enough to close servers for older games in a series, like Madden and other sports games. But it's horrible to close servers for unique games. I loved Create and loved uploading my creative puzzle solutions for all to see and learn from. Now that'll be gone forever. It's pathetic. :-(

Fuck all you people who say they do it to re coup lost revenue from pre owned sales to pay for servers etc, this proves that to be nothing other than a piss poor excuse to rape customers even more. The mass effect series and kingdom of armalur are most certainly my last ever purchases of an EA published title. Im a guy of principle and I will not tolerate this cowboy company anymore. I will also vote with my wallet. Developers like bioware and DICE should break away from these arseholes before their reputation gets flushed down the drain. |

This is terrible!
First they kill Skate (which I played a lot even after Skate 2 came out) Now Burnout Revenge. That was a ton and I mean a ton of fun online.
I don't care when it came out, fun games are always great to go back to. I'll never be able to get 6 friends together to race in one of the best racing games out there ever again. That is what is upsetting. I shouldn't have to play my games every single day for EA to consider them worthwhile.
I love spending rainy days or long weekends revisiting classics that I own. Sports games should get their servers cut if anything, but Burnout Paradise is nothing compared to Revenge and thats just wrong.
I'm done with EA, seriously done.

To be honest its not just EA trying to get some extra cash from us gamers to have us buying on-line passes or the famous season pass, why the heck would anybody buy them when in some cases you still gotta pay half of the points it cost regular (in this case Saints Row 3) I don,t know been watching this whole thing for awhile now: Elite,Season Pass, On-Line Pass, and still when i watch the stuff you actualy getting for free or better said the stuff you actualy realy want or not then its just a overall bad thing. I can imagine some are far better off just buying the maps and extra content they actualy realy want seperate then trowing their money or points into all these passes. Even more bothers me the news that EA is planning something simular to COD,s Elite. And last but not least i don,t get the whole point they complaining about having something against used games but still offering those same used games buyers the ability to let them buy an needed on-line pass and then after coming with the news they shut down the servers..well to say it lightly i would be pretty pissed!

I'm not an owner of any of these games, or have ever been affected by server shutdowns. But I feel for anyone who has spent money on a game with closed servers already, or will be soon. I only have 1 EA game, Mass Effect 2. So I'm not affected by that. But how long until the release a patch to stop that game working, forcing me to buy Mass Effect 3? Or put a a piece of code in a game that gives it a timed life span?

They should just allow individuals to run a server from their 360 maybe, once the game has lost most of it's following. At least keep some online functionality, my misses was pissed when they closed Tiger Woods 2010, 100+ people played that together on a daily basis.
As for people saying "they wouldn't shut down game servers lots of people play" Well yes of course they WOULD or why would you go buy the newest version if you were happy with the first one.

82: You're right. I'm so sorry. Being incorrect about the date of release of EA MMA by a few months totally renders my argument invalid, and deserves for you to thumbs down my post and make me look retarded.
Fucking trolls... sometimes I don't even understand the point anymore.
Okay, so EA MMA didn't come out less than a year ago, it came out seventeen months ago. HAPPY, ASSHOLE? Either way, if people are enjoying the game (I'm certainly not one of them, but if you are, then more power to you), and especially if you've forced players to pay for an online pass, then just let the servers be. You really make yourselves look like a lightweight company when you can't support any more servers than the ones that exist for the current season of games. I know, you have to support NCAA Football and Basketball 12, you have to support NHL, Madden, and NBA 12, and probably some others, like Nascar or something... that's really not enough to justify shutting down servers for games constantly.
If you want to shut down old, inactive servers, fine. Do it. There is one exception though: IF you've forced pre-owned gamers to pay for an online pass, shutting down the servers for that game is no longer an option. People have paid directly for that. Leave them alone.

The thing that absolutely infuriates me about this is that EA had very plainly stated that the purpose of these bullshit payed Online Passes was to fund the maintenence of servers for said games. It's already irritating enough having to do my homework before I buy an older title to deduce whether or not I'll even be able to earn the online achievements, I thought that the whole online pass deal (which I can understand, but I'm not a fan of) would be the end to that. It's too bad everyone continues to support EA financially; they're only growing stronger. Terrible customer service, Steam integration online (which I could give two shits about, since I'm primarily a console gamer), etc...
