Deus Ex: Human Revolution

GDC 2012: Eidos Montreal “Truly Sorry” For Deus Ex Boss Fights, “Kind of Forgot” About Them

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a brilliant game. That much is certain. If there was one criticism levelled at it though, it was that the game’s boss fights were, for want of a better word, duff. Eidos Montreal know this now and are “truly sorry” for not putting enough effort in them.

Speaking at the “Reimagining a Classic: The Design Challenges of Deus Ex: Human Revolution” talk at this year’s GDC, Deus Ex’s Senior Game Designer, Francois Lapikas, spoke about them in great detail.

“The problem with boss fights... Remember the production sheets I was talking about at the beginning,” said Lapikas, referring to an earlier slide which broke down every aspect of Human Revolution at the pre-production stage to an incredible amount of detail. “We didn’t have one for boss fights. We kind of forgot about it.”

“It shows how important they were because we didn’t have these sheets. We didn’t know what we were doing with boss fights. For us we saw them as a way to break the pacing, more of a way to test the player’s skills. That’s a big factor why you cannot go through them using social or stealth.”

Unlike everything else in Human Revolution, the boss fights were missed out in pre-production and put together at a much later time of development.

“We also waited until the middle of production before we tackled them,” continued Lapikas, “There was no designing during pre-production, it was during production that we started design on them. So we were also pressed by time.”

“We thought by putting enough ammo and enough weapons in the room, that would be enough for players just to defeat them and go, “That was nice, let’s go on. Playtests did flag the boss fights as a problem, but they did not flag the severity of them.”

“It was only once we shipped that we fully understood, but it was a surprise to us actually. A big surprise, not a good one. I don’t really have a solution regarding boss fights but next time we’re going to think about it more. They were a big part of the game and we should have put more effort in them, so we’re truly sorry about that.”

So there you have it… the next Deus Ex – which there will almost certainly be – will have a lot more care and attention put into the game’s boss fights. Can I get a “Hellz yes!”?

It's okay, I forgive them. Deus Ex was a fantastic game. It was in my top5 games of 2011 for sure. Probably my favourite shooter of 2011. Hopefully they don't go away from the things that made this game such a blast to play in the sequel (I'm looking at you bioware).

Just a shame I can't play my dlc unless its in 1 go. The save feature is completely broken. No mention of fixing that then? No? Ok fine, I just won't buy anything from them again. Ruined the experience for me.

At least they admitted it. I forgive them. 20 minutes of a little dullness compared to 5/6 hours of fun. It's buffs out. :)

@3: I bought the Missing Link DLC when it was on sale a month or so ago and just recently started playing it, and I've had no issues with saving my game.

They weren't that bad. They were just a lower standard than the rest of Deus Ex, which isn't an insult as Deus Ex was a fantastic game. Really, really dame good.

However, fair play and they at least acknowledge they we not up to the standard they wanted.

Its nice to see this. An acknowledgment of the only flawed part of the game. The bosses reminded me of MGS they were shit as well. Sorta forced. Though Kojima never came out and said " that boss fight with vamp , yea sorry about that. oh and vamp , yea sorry about him"

Its nice to see. Looking forward to the sequel / prequel, this was one of last years stand out games for moi.

@11 You said Vamp twice.

OT: I haven't gotten around to playing this though I did pick it up for cheap during Christmas sales. Glad to hear mostly positive things about it though. After I finish Mass Effect 3 and then Rage which I am almost finished with then I will probably move on to this.

14 - That would require a massive undertaking to redo aspects of the game. Its not fiscally viable or practical. Chalk it up to lessons learned. Although it would be a good note to keep in their hat for future DLC or games. Technically they already did that with the Missing Link, since you can approach the final encounter many different ways.

16 - I believe he was suggesting the apology should be two-fold. One for the boss fight with Vamp, and the other for making the character Vamp. I always thought he was a little out of place, even for a Metal Gear Solid game, personally.

One thing I wish they'd addressed was how the endings of the game were fairly token. I did appreciate the idea behind each of them, but I wish there was a little more substance to them than just push a button and watch a cinema. I'd have liked your decisions throughout the game to have a little more weight, too. But hey, pipe dreams.

One of my top games is Deus Ex, it looked great and played really well. Yeah the boss fights were a bit basic but that didn't detract too much from the game, imo. Can only mean a sequal will be that much better.

Fantastic game, and fortunately the boss fights dont take up too much time, even if they were a pain in the backside. It certainly changed the pacing of the game though :-/

Nice to see them hold their hands up though, i'd have bought the next DE without issue, but that just nails it for me, they at least recognise something to change for the next one :-)

Never played it, but did here horror stories about the boss battles. I find it hard to believe it was play tested and they didn't realize it's severity, more likely it was already being printed and they weren't going to hold it back for that, especially if the rest of the game is as polished as I read/heard. I'll probably still pick it up in the future.

Boss fights were just one problem with the game. There seemed always to be a "best" choice when upgrading, regardless of character build. On an achievement website, I feel it's fair to point out how problematic some of the achievements were too. It's a fine game, especially if you like short plots with poor endings.

I got through half this game but then my HUD dissapeared permanently. Haven't played since. I need to give it another try.

Another problem is that you aim down your sights with the analog stick. I can't get used to that.

First run through on the hardest difficulty I HATED every boss fight. Eventually I figured them out but they did seem like they were boss fights from a different game. It was fine though, after that first run the bosses were easy (lol...maybe because I played the last 2 play throughs on casual). I had fun with the game though.

@28...what achievements were problematic? I unlocked them all just fine. I did have to play through it once more than I would have liked, but I did not use a guide the first 2 times. Were people experiencing glitches with them?

Awwww Eidos Montreal, don't worry about bit mistake with bosses fights. Eidos, you done fantastic job with this game and players and myself who had played this game so far are proud of you Eidos. :D

I enjoyed few bosses of them. I understand lots of complaints on it. Yes and yes this game is fucking amazing and one of best games in 2011 and of course this one is one of my top 10 best 2011 game titles.

I look forward their next Deus Ex title in future with better bosses fights, little bit more RPG elements add in and allow you returns place and areas after game complete that will be nice too. :):)

@31 No, I believe he is on about they were to hard for him. which is fine for me. they're called "Achievements" for a reason. And you do feel a sense of achievement once you have done them. I did on AC1 Anyway Lol.

Spend some time Metal Gear developers. They know how to make a Boss Fight cool with a heap of options on how to approach the boss too.

Come on, they weren't THAT bad. There's been much worse boss fights in countless other games. I think the issue is that the game set its standards way too high already so players expected more from them.

to boss fights weren't that bad, but seeing as the final boss can be done on the hardest difficulty in less then 20 seconds, without really taking a hit, that needed work - BUT, made the pacifist cheevo easier :P not grumbling here

Achievements were piss simple, bosses were hilariously easy even on hardest setting, played the game twice on hardest setting without firing a single shot or killing anyone with my augs almost maxed(only one not done was hacking reveal thing).Overall the game was a bland, boring vague rip of metal gear with one of the most annoying dlcs ever,in terms of bosses I would rather they were easy like deus than stupidly difficult like that crawmerax asshole from the other game with the worst dlc EVER(mad moxxi) borderlands. No originality, boring and suffers from the fact that everything is golden tinted the same colour as the pick-ups so half the time you cant see them. Why does every game do this?,highlight the pick-ups with a different colour that stands out for gods sake and stop littering games with things that look like the collectables but are just background art, really fucks me off.
