Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

GDC 2012: Gamers Complained Reckoning Was Too Easy, Yet Two Thirds Played on Easy
Written Monday, March 05, 2012 By Dan Webb
View author's profile

Speaking at an AI Postmortem for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning at GDC today, Big Huge Games’ Senior Programmer, Michael Dawe, said that one of the biggest complaints about Reckoning was that it was too easy, yet two-thirds of the game’s players played the game on the easiest difficulty.

“Here’s a picture of our forums, three days after the game launched. I wanted to see how our players are reacting to how difficult the game is,” said Dawe, pointing out the threads on the first page of the official forums that were complaining about the game’s difficulty (or lack of it) – it was by far the most popular topic.

“Is that bad, necessarily, because single every one of those threads has a post in it that says I think the difficulty is fine, so who do you believe?”

“How do you balance a game for difficulty that could be 3 hours long if you’re just doing the main quest or 200 hundred hours long if you’re doing everything?”

“It’s not a simple answer,” said Dawe, “In our playtests when we asked how difficult they thought the game was... it’s sort of about a 4 on the 1 to 10 scale,” which according to the game’s Lead Designer was about right.

“It turns out about two-thirds of our players played on the easiest difficulty,” he confessed, “So I’m not going to say to you that you need to make the game easier or that you need to make it harder, but you need to think about who’s going to play your game.”

Dawe proceeded to highlight various instances in the QA playthroughs that pointed out how hard it was to balance considering it was an RPG, which complicates matters further.

The Senior Programmer highlighted a couple of examples that showed how clever players were able to learn the ins and the outs of the game to an extent that they could completely dominate the opposition.

In one example playthrough, a designer on the team had killed only 27 creatures from start to finish, investing heavily in damage resistance and health regeneration. They beat the last boss in 15 seconds.

Another designer maxed out their blacksmithing skill and was able to stack buffs on one piece of armour that allowed him to do 5 million damage with one hit. Considering the last boss has “tens of thousands” worth of HP, that’s one hell of a hit.

How did you find Reckoning? Too easy? Did you play on easy? What was your most powerful hit? Sound off in the comments.

I'm playing my first playthrough on normal and am finding it just fine. If you're playing it and finding it to easy just turn the difficulty up. I think sometimes people are afraid to play outside of what they think their capabilities are...

I'm playing the game on hard mode, and it isn't really that hard. I find it pretty comfortable difficulty which I like when I play RPGs.

I agree with @1.... A statistic like that doesn't mean anything. I bet around 2/3 of people enjoyed Mass effect 2 more than they enjoyed Mass effect 1.... That doesn't mean anything, it just means it was more dumbed down for a broader audience to enjoy... in reality, ME1 was a far superior game when compared to ME2.

Same thing with this case, the people who complained to you were the other 1/3 who actually make up your core community.

Then again maybe the ones playing on hard did so expecting a challenge and were disappointed, so they're likely the ones most vocal about the lack of difficulty. I don't see people choosing "easy" then complaining that they got what they asked for. Besides, with the right gear, "hard" is damn near effortless, I have to say.

I'm currently doing my first playthrough and i'm playing on easy. I do it for every game I get just to take in the story and have a good idea of what and what not to do for the hardest difficulty.

I'm sure there a lot of people that are the same as me.

I played it on Normal and then Hard. Hard was pretty annoying until I got to a certain point (near the end of the game). Enemies would take out giant chunks of your life bar. The bosses though, they were never a challenge as you just pop Reckoning mode and they're dead in a matter of seconds.

I am playing the game on easy, because I want to enjoy the game and see everything without having to worry too much about dying. I plan on playing a second time on hard, just the main quest to get the achievement.

I don't see what the big deal is with people who don't like people who play games on easy. I want to enjoy them, not have a super hard challenge.

I started the game on easy, because of what they said before hand that the speed run was 200hrs on easy,so i thought i will stick it on easy and get a nice 200hr game(like i have time to play all these games as it is),a lot has come out since then that they meant 'everything in game' in 200hrs(i was thinking speed run as in main quest only-start to end)

plus those saying Hard isn't hard and there was an achievement for beating it on hard,so i started again on hard...see how i'll go with it

If people want to play it on easy though, that's fine...its a great game whichever difficulty you have it on

What happened to people just playing on normal? Normal, as in how the developers wanted it to be played? Easy should be for people who struggle or aren't familiar, hard should be for the hardcore who want the challenge.

You don't play a game on easy then complain its too easy....dumbest shit I've read all day.

The game is fine on normal, imo. It has it's easy moments sure and like every other RPG there is a point where your gear/stats will beat out what the game throws at you. But I feel normal is fair with easy moments and challenging ones.

Also word on the street is the house of valor arena matches are very challenging on normal/hard.

The Problem nowadays is that developers dont give you credits when playing on a harder gamemode, like it was in Diablo 2 with better loot and more money.

im playing on hard and i think its perfect. Most games are meant to be played on hard. Im confused as to why, when you lvl up, there was difficulty selection in the first place. If you cant beat an area or boss, you go grind out a couple of lvls and come back later.

2/3 of gamers accePt a game for what it is and make the most of it, 1/3 go online and find anything they can to complain about on forums, that's the way I see it.

started on hard and im close to the end, it has been the best RPG ihave played in years i found it more challenging than skyrim in some parts sometimes you maybe able to take on 6 at once then other times 1 alone will be enough to cripple you i carry a ton of health potion just in case 1 boss may require about 15 health potions :D

The game was way too easy. If you do only 20% of the side quests you can finish the game with hardly any challenge because your character is way too powerfull. And yes I did play it on the hardest setting.

But this is not something only Reckoning has, basicly any game with character progress like this has it. Be it Fable, Skyrim, Reckoning or any other RPG, in the end your character is just way too powerfull.
Which is why I don't get people who oppose what a game like Oblivion did, with scaling enemies. You might not get the "I am a God" feeling but at least it keeps things (somewhat) challenging from start to finish.

I'm playing the game on normal and am sacrificing high defenses and strong attacks and invested in stealth and long range with emphasis on daggers and a little in magic. Doing so I get to play the game the way I want and when i'm able to get an assassination kill its well deserved and satisfying since when I have to take on lots of enemies at once or just one powerful one im in for a fight! The boss fights have also been challenging on my end (fighting Airemer and 2 Crudoks at once was a hell of a fight for me, but my ice mines and arrows did me good).

I think this game is better then Skyrim in that sense and am getting every dollar I paid out of it! With the promised DLC of an entire new continent to explore on the way i'd say KoA:R is a game no RPG fan should miss!

I finished it yesterday on normal, did every quests and every dungeon in the game as a mage , from start to f inish it was really easy.KoA isnt that great , story was light, graphic outdated and almost everything in the game was from another game, no original idea in the entire game.

I'm sitting about half way through the game on hard. It's difficulty seems to be pegged just about right IF you play above your normal comfort Zone. I.e I normally play through on normal, but after 3 hours found it far too easy, so bumped it up to hard, and the challenge feels just about right.

I play on easy and have no need to complain. If I wanted a challenge, I'd play on a higher level. I don't though. I play to enjoy myself, not to make myself rage quit, which happens far too easily. Trials HD is a swine for making me do that.

Anyhow, all I need to do is get too far ahead of myself and I can get my ass handed to me easily enough. I haven't touched the main quest since finding Arden's corpse in his house, choosing instead to concentrate on the side missions.

5 million damage? That's a fair amount.

But I would have played the game on easy first, then played at a harder difficulty later. I do this with every game. Deus Ex and Mass Effcet 2 are gettin a harder run. Already done with with GoW games. Just a shame I couldn't get into the game demo. Was looking forward to it. Might get it when its cheaper

I always play first on normal and then on hard if time permits (which it usually doesn't). I want to have fun, but also feel some sort of accomplishment once I'm done and I would only recommend easy for my grandparents... Exeception is CoD, I always finish it on veteran first time around. There is something totally satisfying when I finish the whole game not knowing what to expect at every corner (which was a pain in W@W due to infinite spawns....)

lol, difficulty has nothing to do with whether or not you are a "casual" gamer. Casual gamers are people who play when they can here and there. If a person plays 40hrs. worth a games a week, but always plays on the easy setting, is he "casual?" - I would say no. Games are played for fun, and a lot of people, fun is just wanting something to play without having to worry about any significant challenge. Determining whether or not someone is a 'casual' or 'hardcore' gamer, has little to do with the difficulty setting they play games on, and more to do with simply their love and knowledge of games and the gaming community as a whole.

If anything, people who play games solely for the challenge, or people who need a challenge in order to feel satisfied, are the niche audience.

Oh, and playing on easy also has nothing to with determining if you are a "hardcore rpg player." "Hardcore" rpg players, are most likely playing for the rpg aspect of these games, which has nothing to do with the difficulty setting. They also probably engage in pen and paper games, or did at one time. A "hardcore" rpg player would also have no problem selecting "Story Mode" for Mass Effect 3.

Played through it on Normal because I didn't realize there was a secret achievement for beating the game on Hard until I was 10 hours in. Got all the achievements except for that one, which took me 60 hours and was a lot of fun. I then blew through the campaign in 9.5 hours on Hard and got the full 1k/1k.

The game was not difficult on Hard. If I'd known it would be that easy, I would have played on Hard from the get-go. But regardless of how difficult the game was, it was always fun, which is far more important.

It is incredibly easy, but that's not a bad thing. As much as I hate the game, Dark Souls wouldn't be what it is if it had any sort of easy option, its difficulty is central to the game and the experience. You have to match the difficulty to the experience you want the player to have. Amalur is a relaxing, laid back, chilled out game, nothing too intricate, nothing too complex and no part so difficult that it requires any more than basic level attention. Even the rpg/levelling/skills are simple to use once you get into the game. Its masterfully done in my opinion, and I don't think it would be half the game it is if it was overly hard.

I'm not a hardcore gamer nor one that can usually beat games on a harder setting or take the time. I started on hard only because I knew the achievement had to be done. And imho it was very easy. The start was a little challenging which is expected on hard but after the 1st town I believe it was pretty easy even on hard.

Hey guys,
i played the game first time on hard difficult and i must say: its really to easy. i get all achievemnts without problems (only the "A Wink and a Smile" is missing cause i dont level the Persuasion attempts ability up ;-) ). So i dicided to play it again on easy to get this achievemnt. but i didn“t get any different between hard and easy. so i wish it could be more harder because its a real nice game ;-)

An Insane Mode (or Reckoning Mode) would be awesome... beat it on hard, first playthrough, after 30 hours of gameplay with 40 ach's...other then the difficulty not being harder, which I would have preferred, it was an awesome game and i would recommened it to anyone/everyone....

i normally play my games on normal but since there was an achievement that required a hard playthrough i tried to play it on hard. and tbh my hard playthrough felt like i was playing on easy =/ Might have died like 1-2 times in the beginning but later on i even didnt use potions anymore ;O

I really enjoyed the game even if it felt way to easy for being a hard mode. people who are looking for a challenge on hard mode wouldnt be satisfied. like the person above me said, an insane mode would do the trick :)

The game was amazing, The only problem I'd have to say was the double jump, I have never felt the need to play a game on easy, Most companies leave out some juicy points, And for those to play on hard, Add in alot more, Easy as stated above for people that don't want a challenge or want to learn the game...Playing on hard now, First time playing it, Gonna 100%, And I give it a big ole 9/10 Great game. Gotta really aggree with #46, Also have to aggree with 37 But, the reason I got this game is because ea games wasn't afraid to rip off WoW or fable in there attempts to make a better game, while also importing from there own games, Just a good mix thou.
