Assassin's Creed III

Assassin's Creed III Story and Gameplay Details Spill Onto the Web

Some industrious little so-and-so over on NeoGAF have got their hands on the latest issue of Game Informer magazine, which features the full skinny on Assassin's Creed III, with story and gameplay details galore. According to GI's feature, the game's new hero is a half-English/half-Native American assassin called Connor and he'll encounter and interact with a number of key figures from the American Revolution period, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.

Assassin's Creed III will be set in and around New York and Boston between 1753 and 1783, which will see Connor growing up from a young boy on the American frontier, where he's raised by the Mohawk before leaving to confront the Templars after his village is burned down by white colonists.

Ubisoft is apparently also aiming to make Assassin's Creed III feel more like Assassin's Creed 3.5, with a completely overhauled engine allowing for improved facial animation and large battle scenes featuring loads of soldiers on screen at once. And not all of the game's British colonists will be pure evil either. You'll meet some nice ones too.

Check out the full details here, boiled down by NeoGAF and taken from CVG. Stay tuned after the bullet points for four new screenshots, via AGB. Now, strap yourself in, grab yourself a drink and wade on through this lot.... There's loads to get through here, folks:

  • New hero called Connor/Ratohnhake:ton (pronounced Ra-doon-ha-gay-doo). He has an English father and Native American mother.
  • More details about the protagonist/scenarios: You will experience Connor's childhood on the American frontier as he is raised by the Mohawk. The Mohawk eventually clash with white colonists who burn their village down, causing Connor to dedicate his life to confront tyranny and injustice.
  • A new traversal approach that has players leaping and climbing trees and mountain cliffs.
  • Uses a new version of the Anvil engine that can "depict thousands of troops engaged in bloody battle" along with highly detailed face close-ups.
  • They later imply that if they used version numbers, they would be like going from Anvil 1.0 -> Anvil 2.0 or something of that nature.
  • Combat is focused on putting you on the offensive and based on speed/momentum.
  • The main character has thousands of new and unique animations (no carry over from other titles) to support the new combat system.

Character details:

  • George Washington: Interacting with Washington is one of the core relationships of the game.
  • Benjamin Franklin: He's not a convenient inventor a la Da Vinci.
  • Charles Lee: His role is a mystery.
  • The game is set between the years 1753 - 1783 and is centered around the cities of Boston and New York.
  • "It's not just going to a historical building now; it's going to a historical event."

Event examples:

  • "You will see the great fire of New York. You will visit Valley Forge as a location that is currently occupied by Washington's forces. You will visit these places in the moment that they were important, and hopefully, experience the reason why we know where they are today. That's the goal."
  • Connor is in the heart of major battles, and they can now have a couple thousand guys on screen, whereas before it was capped at about 100.
  • The overall story is still centered around the Assassins versus the Templars and Connor's journey.
  • Not all the Colonists will be cast as good people, and not all the British will be cast as evil oppressors. They're trying to focus on how both the Assassins and Templars viewpoints exist in a gray morality as the Templars really believe they're saving the world.
  • The French and Native Americans will also feature in the game, as was probably really obvious.
  • The modern day stuff relates to that location in New York at the end of Revelations.
  • There will be all sorts of wilderness in the game referred to as the Frontier.
  • The map of the Frontier is 1.5 times bigger than the entire map of Brotherhood.
  • The Frontier is not empty like in Assassin's Creed 1, but features a third of the game's missions and gameplay content.
  • You can hunt animals for resources, and how you kill them effects your reward. A one hit kill on a bear gets you a much more valuable pelt than stabbing it eight times.
  • The wilderness traversal plays a big part in the gameplay in the Frontier, allowing you to use trees, cliffs, ledges, and more to set up kills and combat.
  • Connor does have a hidden blade.
  • The world changes as time passes, so a field where a battle happened in one year may just be a series of empty encampments a few months later.
  • The entire world will change with seasons, so the cities and the wilderness will all exist in both Summer and Winter settings.
  • In the winter, soldiers will move slowly and stumble about in the snow, and lakes and rivers will freeze over allowing you new terrain to work with. This gives Connor an extra advantage since he can still use the trees and wilderness pretty effectively during this time of year.
  • There are all sorts of clubs and groups who want you to join and give you quests. These are separate from the mission system. These clubs will contact you based on what you do in the game. For example, hunting a lot will get you an invitation to the hunting society.
  • There will be a goods based economy, a new property system, and more Desmond stuff.
  • There's going to be some new puzzle thing like the first person Tetris.
  • There's a new Animus database known as Animus 3.0.
  • They're not unveiling anything about the multiplayer yet.
  • There will be more platforming levels.
  • Full synchronization returns, but with major tweaks. Missions have checkpoints, You also get significant rewards for doing these tasks instead of a 100%. "Imagine a leveling system in an RPG, except there's a finite amount of XP to find. The more in-sync you get, the more you fill your sync bar. Within each mission, each activity you complete has a value". You can replay everything to increase your score.
  • They imply there is something resembling the Brotherhood system of picking up fellow assassins.
  • Aligned groups are gone, but something new is replacing them in regards to factions. They don't say what.
  • There's a new notoriety system that is more hidden and doesn't penalise you for exploring risky areas.
  • The game has fast travel because the game has more traveling.
  • Don't expect more den defense.
  • You can upgrade Connor's gear and costume as the game goes on in an attempt to make it feel more authentic.
  • The cities have a lot more subtle detail now in terms of ambient things that happen.
  • You can now leap over wagons or slide under obstacles, including navigating over and around moving objects. The free running stuff also has you jumping through windows to trees and then on top of church roofs. Basically, expect the free running stuff, but more fluid and presumably generally closer to the ground.
  • Connor enters battle with two weapons. The game uses the same controls in and out of battle.
  • The tomahawk and knife are a "constant presence" in battle. They also let you do double counters and multiple takedowns, and you can chain kills.
  • There's no more target locking, it just automatically detects your target. Counter/defense are the same button to prevent turtling.
  • You can use human shields and other context sensitive moves.
  • They want you to constantly move in battle.
  • There are lots of secondary attacks like the one shot pistol on the Y button.
  • There's a new dynamic camera to track the action and make it look as cinematic as possible.
  • There is a new sprinting system also, so you can hold the button to instantly turn around and start fleeing from combat. They also let you kill people while still moving so you can keep chasing a target. They kind of imply you can even leap off of them after you kill them, though I'm not sure if that makes you faster or just doesn't impede your movement.
  • They really, really, really want you to constantly move. I mean like they say this every four sentences. Not just in battle, but in every section of the game.
  • They also try to keep you more in control of the combat than ever before.
  • Game Informer really loves their animation system.
  • There are around 2.5 hours of character scenes in the game that are fully acted and recorded. They mean this in Naughty Dog style where they have the actors being mocaped while performing on a set that resembles the scene in the game.
  • They're aiming for accuracy by having historical dialog consultants and actual Native American actors.
  • This game has the longest development cycle since AC1, and has twice the production capacity (in terms of work hours) and budget of Revelations.
  • They want the game to feel like AC3.5, and the game will have its first version complete in just a few more weeks, at which point they're going to spend the rest of their time refining it.

Assassin's Creed III is out on October 30th, 2012. Now, here's the four new screenshots:

[Thanks, Grif]

Wow looks and sounds great thus far :-) I love the AC games so I'm pumped for this release. The overworld sounds somewhat like Red Dead Redemption with the (bear) hunting, tasks, clubs and side-missions. This game sounds big =D

Also love the setting of the American Revolution, the later time period in comparision with the first two settings!

Psyched!

"aiming to make Assassin's Creed III feel more like Assassin's Creed 3.5" seems like there still a bit behind considering this is the fifth game.

Kinda reminds me of how MGS3 got turned up in a similar way, with the hunting and all new environment. Though I think Capcom have done that mocap on sets more than Naughty Dog have.

How will you deal with the fact that every enemy will probably have a firearm? So what, since they'll all have muskets, will each bad guy be dangerous for one shot and then he spends the next 30 seconds reloading? I know they aren't going to be whipping out their swords if they don't have to.

The second game was fantastic, Brotherhood was pretty alright and with a fun map but Revelation was just boring and really felt like a cashcow.
This both looks and sounds like it can restore my faith in Assassin's Creed!

Yes. Yes, more of this. Even though Revelations sorely disappointed me (the ending, den defense, first-person Desmond-ing, tiny map, the MP being worse than was introduced in Brotherhood, etc), I still have a lot of hope for this title. And I personally am liking this protag a lot.

Now imagine how awesome this game could have been, if they had, had all of the man power that was spent making Brotherhood & Revelations, on this game instead.

Honestly Ubi, after revelations, I was pretty ready to give up.
But I am not ashamed to admit, I was wrong from what I've read here.
If this is the same level of awesome as AC2, then I will be more than happy.

@32- The game's story picks up where revelations left off. Desmond is using the Animus 3.0 to use the memories of Connor to unlock the final secrets need to "save the world". The info given is more about the new assassin, setting, gameplay changes, etc. Don't worry, it's still about Desmond. ;)

Ubisoft, do the right thing.  No multiplayer achievements.  Make real SP add-ons (if there are to be any) and package MP maps with them if MP is still in this game.  It'd actually mean something though to make the numbered entries just focused on a great SP experience.  And try to make Desmond something other than a cypher.

The idea of no red zones feels strange, but given the setting maybe it's because enemies are going to be on the move making the red zones obsolete.  Everything else sounds great and I'm warming to this.  I had hoped they'd travel a different route but I doubt anyone cares about my prospective conclusion.

October can't come soon enough!

At first when I read news about AC3, I was a bit worried about the settings, but now, I'm really, really excited to see all those upgrades and improvements, new combats, new people, new world, new settings.

Glad to see the trademark hidden blade will be kept, but does that mean the hidden gun will be no more? And if everyone starts to use guns, why use a bow which is even less "advanced" then the crossbow?

I don't mind Ubisoft charges me more, but I just hope they can wrap everything neatly, even if that means the game will be seperated into 2, or even 3 discs.

@9 technically, it is the 5th game. But in reality, this will be the 3rd build. AC1 was great the way it was. Until AC2 came out and upgraded the game in every way. ACB and ACR are more like 2.1/2.2. While they continued the plot, the actual builds of the games weren't major upgrades. They simply polished the engine and gameplay over the course of the 3 games. AC3 is looking to upgrade EVERYTHING over the previous entries like AC2 did to AC1. And then some. So they're calling it "3.5" to give you an idea of how much as been improved/changed.

@12 the same way you dealt with guns in Revelations....

@29 having all that extra staff would have been redundant....they'd have had multiple of every position and people fighting over their perspectives. They used a full team on this project....its not like they used half a crew.

While I was planning to buy this anyways, it went from "yay a new AC game" to "2nd most anticipated game this year".

If the game is that big, there's no room at all for multiplayer. At least that better be the case. I'm sure Connor's spin-off games will have the multiplayer though, or if Ubisoft really liked their fans, just create a separate multiplayer spin-off.

Ok, this is what a sequel should be! They're willing to overhaul the formula and change it to fit the setting and aesthetic, but keep the same feel of the overall game.

This article really feels like Ubisoft giving a middle finger to the comparisons that have been drawn between Activision's CoD franchise and the Assassin's Creed series.

You know what, sounds great. This could habe been a GOTY contender had they mot milked Ezio's teets for the last two years with brotherhood amd revelations (seriously, how excited would you all be if this was the first assassins crred since 2? We'd all be going crazy... u isoft did yhis to themselves though).

Judging by it this feels like assassins creed meets read dead redemption, can't wait to see some actual gameplay, can't wait for it to be released. This is going to be epic!!

Except

"There's going to be some new puzzle thing like the first person Tetris"

fuck!

Can't wait to find out how this is going to wrap up the storyline. It's going to be interesting with the continuous movement for combat and non-combat. I much prefer climbing and stealth bug it seems they've more or less ditched it. At least we'll get to watch New York burn.

@28 It's amazing how offended most of us yanks can get if you point out that glorious image was of men sneaking across a river in the middle of the night on Christmas to kill men who were sleeping in their beds.

i think i'm in love with this new direction they are going towards. cause even though istanbol was fun to run around and climb the same looking buildings over and over, i'd like a more rich enviroment, and old-style games which protrudes the late 1700's i'm totally down with. hopefully they just dont make that era look retarded though and they really nail it.

Sounds promising, but still disappointed with yet ANOTHER game based in the US. We've a whole world to explore, and after the first 4 AC games, I was hoping somewhere a little less well known, with more than 200-300 years of history . . .

Worth keeping an eye on though!

I was scared at first, but now it sounds like they are doing a good job on it. Though I'm sad about no den-defense. I thought they could have done better on it, but if they redesigned it somehow, it could have been pretty good.

Just from reading all the bullet points and seeing the screenshots, this is looking to be the best AC yet. I love the fact that it's incorporating some American History into the AC universe. I loved the settings of the previous games, but being in the good ole USofA during a pivotal point in it's history just sounds amazing.

#90-I saw that and got excited as well. Den Defense was my least favorite part of Revelations. I've never been a big fan of tower defense gameplay.

I will definitely be placing my pre-order on Monday.

Of course it'll feel like AC 3.5. Brotherhood felt like 2.5 and Revleations something like 2.8. They re-used a fair amount from 2 in them, so 3 will feel MUCH better than Brotherhood and Revelations COMBINED. Looking forward to it.

People really don't get the "3.5-thing". Ubisoft says that they will have a first version of this game in the next weeks. They will call it "3" and then work on it, polish it, add things, make it perfect and call it for themselves "3.5"

hmmmm dont think they should have taken it to america just yet. i mean in the 18th century the american revolution was important history but Europe was pretty much still the powerhouse of the world. perhaps they should have done Britain fighting the french during the Napoleonic war of 1812 and then moved to america at a more recent time period. or keep as is and then bring it back to europe during ww1 or 2

Ok the game look fun.
But, hey, i don't want gun... I wanna be a "silent" assassin.
And American revolution ? I most prefer be an egyptian (Pharaon period) or an asian (Gengis Khan period)i think the american period it's to "recent".
But afterall it's assassin creed and I know i will love this game.

I can imagine the developer staff at Ubisoft Montreal had not an easy task ahead to pick a new setting for the new assassins creed, as there very intresting time periods to fall back on, Roman Empire, French Revolution ect. Just to name a few. That they went for the american revolution period isn,t a bad choice at all as there is Benjamin Franklin that can fit the role perfect for inventin new items for our main caracter. Ofcourse as someone already mentioned, the fact that the lead caracter now faces firearms makes it intresting to see how Ubisoft will tackle this, but my geuss is that it has something to do with speed and evasion to dodge bullets and make your attack. But sinds the main caracter is still an assassin there probly missions he act like on and using stealth kills mainly and try not to get discovered. The assassins creed series now remind me alot of the young indiana jones serie where indiana meets all these historical figures like mata hari, baron von richthoven, ect. Makes me wonder what more ubisoft has in store for the serie, but at least they not have to worry for running out of ideas for it. Keep up the good work ubisoft montreal :)

@123 either its the lead caracter in younger years so a flashback or whatever, but the other pictures actualy showing you the main caracter, not to be missed by the now famous pointy hood design. i reconise parts of a uniform in his outfit, even so i somewhat think that layout for his outfit not realy fits what the given time period but my geuss is the developers wanted to have a reconisable part in the game that makes it unmissunderstable an assassins creed game and thats ofcourse the pointy hood (form taken from eagle head)

Surely this is the last AC anyway, they said it was going to be a Triligy (may have made that up) and its all to do with 2012, so why would they even make an AC4 and tbf if they did make AC4 i would buy it, its one of best franchises in gaming history imo and its the most consistant too, for me it does live up to the hype :D

This game sounds Frickin awesome! not sold on Connor though, should have been a more native american sounding name in my personal opinion, something like Isha (Protector) or Dyami (Eagle)

@116 I was thinking exactly that, I hope they make AC4 and have it based in europe around the ww2 period, plenty of infamous/famous historical figures around at that time eg Hitler, Churchill, Stalin, Mussolini etc

Great article. I hope all these points result in a great gaming experience.

For the first time since Assassin's Creed 2, I am excited to play this latest new iteration. This is a very fresh locale, setting and protagonist.

I've read the stories about Brotherhood and Revelations and liked the plot and its twists very much, but, I never played either for very long. What ruined these previous two games imo was multiplayer. I feel certain games do not need it and this series is one of them.

Hopefully, the developer will wait and add multiplayer next year (I doubt it) because, much like Brotherhood, we all know there is a sequel to this title coming.

Why are they using the name Connor? What is the connection to eagles in the name Connor?

The best part has to be that they are accualy reboting the system, which is good since gameplay hasn't changed since Brotherhood.

I also like that it ISN'T set in an old itallian town, it's new scenery "The Forest". Looking foward too this FOR sure.

Oh god, there is nothing but good in this post. Even the worst of the series, Revelations, wasn't bad at all, and they're looking to do everything right this time.

Ubisoft, I hate your anti-piracy-and-used measures, but I can't get away from these games.

I really like the changes they have made, according to what I've read. Sounds like I can have more fun between missions instead of just climbing on buildings and collecting stuff. This is definitely my most anticipated game of 2012, after I have gotten my hands on Mass Effect 3 this week.
