Could This Be Your Assassin's Creed III Protagonist?

Richard Walker

Some art that's supposedly promotional material for Assassin's Creed III has popped up online, depicting a Native American assassin holding a tomahawk with a blade shaped like the Assassin's Creed symbol. He looks suitably badass, perched on a rock, tomahawk in one hand, flintlock pistol in the other, as rain lashes down upon his blood-soaked robes.

In short, it looks completely awesome, and if it turns out to be legitimate - which we're hoping it is - then you can colour us very much interested in Assassin's Creed III. If the artwork proves to be on the level, it also means that rumours of the game being set during American Revolution are actually on the money.

The image below was apparently snapped by a Best Buy employee and sent along to Kotaku, with news that there'll be pre-order incentives on offer (a no-brainer that one) and more info forthcoming on March 5th. For now though, we have what may or may not be a kosher piece of promo artwork, and a date for Assassin's Creed III from Ubisoft. October 30th, 2012 folks. October 30th... Check out the artwork below.

  • AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!
  • Damn it, there better be some serious Desmond sections. Thats where the real story of the series is. I haven't finished 2 and will only play these games in order so I haven't yet had to suffer through the des puzzles in the newest game, but I can't wait to be able to kick ass as Desmond in modern day! Still, this is pretty awesome. I was hoping for a slightly more modern period, though I'm not a fan of western themes and I'd rather have seen this in 18, 19th century England instead.
  • I don't know what im looking at exactly.
  • This would be my ideal setting for Assassin's Creed!!! Being part Native American, this excites me so much! I love the setting as well!
  • I really hope that there is some major innovation in ACIII. All of Ezio's games felt the same gameplay wise while the step up from AC 1 and 2 was huge and hopefully the jump from 2(and brotherhood and revelations) to 3 is just as big.
  • This just feels right!
  • Just started AC-2 last night. It's a me, Mario.
  • I WANT that tomahawk, seriously. So much. Want it.
  • I would like to see it set in American during civil war or revolutionary war, it would be fun .
  • I hope this is 100% legit! Playing during the civil war as one of Desmonds ancestors would be out of this world. Bring on Oct. 30!
  • Interesting. I just hope you are granted magical Native American powers, or something stupid like that.
  • *aren't
  • This looks really good....but not for AC 3. They should finish up Desmond's story first and then work on this.
  • Damn that's awesome. I'm curious to see how it'll work in that setting. The series has always been knowing for being set in beautiful cities and I don't think the colonies were that pretty to look at lol
  • You can kind of see the Ubisoft emblem at the bottom right corner. Im thinking this might be a legit picture. If it MEANS anything, thats another question.
  • No mention of the bow & arrows on his back. This looks extremely cool. As long as there are no more sh*tty first person block puzzle, I am so in!
  • Civil war? no, american revolution you dummies. this looks really cool :) i was hoping for either a colonial American based one or a russian one. nice.
  • America!
  • There's not much of my bloodline left that Assassin's Creed won't turn in to wonky, plothole ridden assassins vs templar bullshit. Hopefully he won't be Blackfeet, or all the 12 year olds on the reservation are going to turn in to little shits with hidden knives and emulating whoever this new assassin is (Probably a name akin to "Thunder Cock"). It'll be yet another reason to avoid the shit out of Montana.
  • Well, Im wonding what I am going to be climbing. But could be a lot of fun. I like the series and the multiplayer potential with this era could be fun.
  • I wanna see a modern day AC featuring Desmond as the main assassin...still I know I'll be playing this day 1
  • How exactly does this finish up the planned trilogy by going back to the American Revolution? It'll be a lot of fun scaling two story wood buildings, I can't imagine there were a lot of tall structures in America at that time. Picture looks great but I don't see how this will all tie in...but I suppose they had 3 years to work on this.
  • what would he climb, exactly?
  • oops, i see this is already being questioned. pardon me.
  • @23 buildings of course... lol
  • I hope it is American Revolution. That would be fucking awesome!
  • Has it been rumored he would be Native American? Looks like Mel Gibson as the Patriot wearing the AC coat. Just saying.
  • what reason is there to go back into the animus desmond said he knows what to do now, we dont need an assassins creed of the mohicans, still it should be interesting
  • @25 I believe what he meant was typically when thinking about the American Revolution, buildings don't really come to mind...at least in my case. I imagine the battles and so forth, not a huge city to climb around in. Of course they could branch off of that and make the environment itself more suitable for climbing...which would more than make up for it. We've had huge cities for the past three games and the past 2 haven't had much of an environment outside of the cities they take place in. We'll see what they do, I just don't think we'll see another massive city for this installment...probably more settlements however and some forts.
  • It's seems that the rumours about an assassin women in Egypt is nothing... I wish that for once we could play a girl...
  • @28 I'm sure they will find a reason but honestly I wouldn't want a Desmond only experience. The AC games are made to experience a time and place that most games don't explore. So walking around as Desmond in let's say modern day NYC is not really unique....or entertaining
  • That is the coolest looking assassin I've ever seen.
  • THE AX LOOKS SOOOOOO SICK!!!!!
  • I am excited for this. Can't wait to hear more news on it. I heard a rumor a while back that this game was going to be based around the American Revolution. Can't wait til it's comfirmed.
  • Never played Brotherhood or Revelations(never will) but I am definitely getting AC3 if this is legit.
  • This would be so cool. Kinda be like a Red Dead Redemption/Assassins Creed style game
  • @#35 Great Scott! You may be on to something.
  • why do i have the feeling this is going to ease in a FPS
  • aww american gay :L no offence to any american here but i am sick and tired of every game having a american in it
  • @36 If you've played the first two and are a fan of the series why the hell would you skip two important chapters of it? Not to mention the fact that they have improved gameplay over 2.
  • To those of you who think there won't be anything to climb all over, think Boston and other major British colonies at the time. We may even get England or other European cities to explore.
  • This guy won't beat Ezio's Badassness sorry...
  • @39 Because you're an idiot This is definitely the best Assassin yet! As for what to climb, I'm thinking natural things, like rock formations
  • Washington DC and the Freemasons story line please, also that gun, holy shit this would be amazing.
  • Why are people mentioning the civil war and Abraham Lincoln? This is the American Revolution. Wrong war, and time period.
  • @43 I was tired of Ezio halfway through Assassin's Creed 2....he had NOTHING on Altair....and this guy looks to fall between the two. Besides, who's to say his role will be as big as in previous games? Desmond knows most of what he needs now...he may simply need to jump into the Animus for a couple chapters to find out where exactly he is heading. I wouldn't be surprised if 50% or more of the game is played as Desmond. If that's true, that would also answer the "what are we climbing" questions everyone has. In Desmond's time, there are skyscrapers :)
  • @40 You spelled offense wrong. :P Simply put, this new Assassin looks BADASS.
  • Interesting if true but it looks like it could of been made by anyone on the world wide internets.
  • @35 Don't even think about trying, Abe Lincoln is a vampire hunter now. :P
  • lame. Im so bored of this franchise. I bought revelations and could force myself to play it, because its the same as the past two. I can't wait until somebody says something about Call of Duty.
  • This game looks worse the more I hear about it.
  • Jeebus I'd love for this to be real
  • @46 The reason most people are mentioning that time period is the few references that have been made. At the end of the DLC of Brotherhood, there were a series of coordinates that seemed to match the site of the Battle of Saratoga (a major civil war battle). Then in the new DLC for Revelations, there is a sequence where Abraham Lincoln is repeating the Gettysburg Address (again, during the Civil War). Coincidences? Probably. But they are there.
  • Playing the first AC right now. I'll boost all of them in sequence. can't wait to complete all of them. :D
  • Playing the first AC right now. I'll boost all of them in sequence. can't wait to complete all of them. :D
  • This is a very slick picture. Release date is far too far away.
  • The American Revolution was definitely my first choice for where to take the series next. The Russian Revolution would have been a close second. And while the setting is pitch perfect for the series, I think the are going to have to make some advancements in the gameplay.
  • Looks pretty sweet apart from that flag...
  • @60...What an idiot
  • Assassin's Creed III is just keeps getting better and better!!
  • Oh freakin awesome. Well done Ubisoft. Drop the multiplayer and I may return to AC
  • It will need to have some real Innovation to interest me, as a big fan of this series I was a bit let down by revelations as I felt like I had done it all before too many times and couldn't stay interested enough to complete it.
  • bit shit when you are not american though
  • YES! Finally!!! Can't wait to see a trailer for this and get some more info, this could save the series and blow us all away. Couldn't be happier to be headed state side and away from the Italian peninsula. Who's excited to run around revolutionary Philadelphia or Boston and to hear those shots heard around the world??!!
  • Did the just use Ezio's model and only slightly alter it? That could be Ezio for all we know.
  • i wonder what game in the series they will have an assassin in irag or afghanistan, killing terrorists? maybe thats what desmond is leading up to, a modern warfare assassin
  • Nice, would be a pretty cool new setting! @65: why is that? I'm no Italian but I really loved AC II and Brotherhood.
  • While this is pretty exciting, and Colonial America deserves the attention... I was hoping for the French Revolution to be the third arc. :( Oh well, perhaps it'll happen someday.
  • @#69.. Altair was middle east dude.. the holy land.. sure not exactly afganistan or iraq.. but close enough... and didn't revelations have constantinople or babylon or something? i think one of those is in iraq...
  • @71 Dude you need to look at a map. AC1 takes place in and around Israel during the Third Crusade. AC:R is in Constantinople or modern day Istanbul Turkey. Not a single city is near Iraq.
  • Why is it going to be AC3? shouldn't it be AC5?
  • @73 if i remember the story on the naming right. ubisoft envisioned it as a trilogy with each game having desmond reliving a different ancestor but the ezio character was such a hit with fans that they created 2 sub games (i like to call 2 brotherhood and revelations 2.1 2.2 and 2.3) for that character.
  • @1 AMERICA FUCK NO ! ENGLAND FUCK YEAH
  • if this is real i will NOT be getting this bucket of crap, make one based around london we are far better
  • ops i meant @#68
  • @#72.. i said sure not exactly afgan or iraq.. but close.. its middle eastern countries... mid east arctitecture for that time frame... but as close as your gonna get to Iraq or Afganistan..
  • I was actually hoping England/European dark ages... more along the lines of AC1's Acre...
  • Seriously people? If you're a real fan of the series, (Played all 4 and loved the settings/story) then the setting and time period wouldn't matter. You'd love it no matter what. Simple as that.
  • @80 i agree with you and personally the only thing that i was hopping for was to play as a woman assassin. the era didnt matter though looking at desmonds story this fits best i think. and @78 you did say "i think one of those is in iraq..." sorry i had to correct you on that part not them being in the middle east
  • @80 Personally i agree with you but i would like to see some gameplay before hand to say i'd like it or not.
  • This just made my week He looks like such a baddass fit to carry on the series
  • I'm thinking if this is real, it's a spinoff game like Brotherhood, but to bridge the gap for wherever the locale is for the next full release. Only it'll be cool for the spinoff game to feel "new." Ubisoft has to believe people are tired of the Italy setting. Unless Dances-With-Axes up there in the picture uses time travel to go back to Italy....please no.
  • @72 looks like i need to look at a map more lol most of the citys in ac1 are in syria lol though there were two in israel so i wasn't completely off
  • The flag indicates Colonial America, probably going to be Revolutionary War era. Probably cities like Boston or something like that, lots of forts out on the wilderness? FORESTS!? Really hope this is legit news. Because I'm actually excited again for this series. I was getting bored to death of Ezio and those stupid fucking bards always getting up in my face. They are definitely more annoying than the beggars and retards from the first game.
  • @84 with the coordinates of the grand temple being in upstate new york this setting really isnt that much of a surprise to finish desmonds story and if i remember right (only beat it once playing through again now) when desmond gets out of the animus at the end of revelations they're at the site of the grand temple (at least that is how i'm understanding it)
  • Oh look, it's 1700's America, once again another great game is absolutely fucking ruined by being Americanised, come on, what building or landmarks are there to climb in 1700's America? NONE, seriously, this franchise was much better off staying in Europe. But NOPE, they had to go and shove it in America as well, this is one franchise that is now dead and buried to me, good job Ubisoft, you've gone and fucked up!
  • Need somewhere unexpected and a female assassin would be nice to see.
  • @86 you do make good points but i could see the wilderness being more of a "kingdom" type area sectioning citys like new york boston and philly (i could also see montreal in there as some kind of joke)
  • That will be awesome
  • I've only played the first one..what's the next best one to pick up? I'm tempted by brotherhood but the multiplayer puts me off.. Also is there a reason they all wear white hoods? I'd like to see a different look If not..
  • Sorry but i gotta agree with 60, the flag ruins that for me. I know its probably only for promotional reasons to hint at where the series is going but it just seems way too in my face and looks out of place. The assassin himself looks very bad ass though. Personally i was hoping for Victorian England but I'll settle for this as long as the whole American patriotism isn't too in your face...
  • what really gets me about this stuff about everyone hopping its not all america in your face is that its developed my ubisoft montreal all the flags for is showing an era the assassin isn't even caucasian hes a native american. this game wont be over the top american patriotism there is no point in them doing that. as for @92 try playing them in order (at least thats how i like to do it) while the later ones have things you will miss once you use them you'll miss some important story if you dont and you do get to change your colors starting in 2. as for the hoods think of it this way what better way to kill from the shadows if no one sees your face?
  • personally i didnt care about what era desmonds new ancestor would be from i thought all the rumors would have interesting things to do and see but the more its thought about and the more i play the other four the more i see how this setting will help bring desmonds story to a close. what i really wanted to see was a female assassin as the lead. oh btw i want to know more about desmonds mother. some of the things bill says makes me feel that shes the one that has altir ezio and this new guy in her lineage. and i want to know how desmond and 16 are related. at first i thought brothers till they released 16s name so i'm guessing cousin or something like that
  • I still need to get Brotherhood and Revelations and give them a go. Played AC2 last year and loved every minute of it, so obviously want to follow the story. As for what to climb, well, not every assassin needs to climb a 10 story building. Yeah, its fun, but even if they only had smaller buildings then its not all that bad. Either way, nothing is confirmed yet.
  • While I think this found be an interesting change for the series I think the art style for this poster seems very comic book like and wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be an extra story which will be produced in a comic book format as several other game series have done e.g mass effect gears of war
  • @97 that vary well could be too and it wouldnt be surprising they already have done some ac comics
  • That is awesome on so many levels.
  • Can already tell from the image that AC3 is gonna shove yawnfest American patriotism down our throats. No thank you, Ubisoft.
  • I've only played the first one, but man, is that picture cool looking or what?
  • I can't believe that some people are saying that this game is already shit because it's in America. Have you guys ever thought that it might not even be a game, but a comic book like a previous post stated. Also, tell me why a Native American would show American patriotism(especially in the 1700s).
  • Not that I'm not against it set in Revolutionary America, which could be a really good time period to see, I did like that the series had had its roots in Europe and the Middle East. The history and the culture of these places has far more to draw from than America which has had only 200-300 years worth of *documented* history compared to thousands for the rest of the world. Remember when they were thinking about doing a Samurai AC, or a King Arthur time-period AC?
  • im sorry but that just doesnt look right
  • blah...that blows. American Revolution...seriously? What are we going to do? Run around in the forest? Jump off of trees?
  • @105 my thoughts exactly
  • Considering there was only originally 3 games in the series this kind of pisses me off. I love the series, dont get me wrong but a supposed trilogy and now a new version every year?
  • They're skipping like 200/300 years of pretty cool stuff by going from Constantinople 1500, to America 1700/1800. I would have really liked to see a version where Desmond had a relative in England during the jack the ripper era, since that would have seemed new and exciting and not make people reminisce about Red Dead Redemption.
  • Wait...how the hell can Desmond have a NATIVE American heritage if his lineage started in EUROPE??? Take note on the word "NATIVE" because I don't see how it's possible to come from one place then have a lineage that also started across the planet???
  • OK, first of all, I am not going to argue about which timeframe would be better, American or Russian revolution, or the logistics of jumping from the Middle East/"Holy Land" to the "New World" However, as a member of the Sicanju Lakota Oyate, all I can say is: LELELELELELE (that's a war whoop) Just remember, Native Americans are the ONLY group in the world to EVER make the United States sign a treaty of SURRENDER!
  • im bored of this series anyways, i used to rant about the first one from reading a tiny article in a magazine, never shut up about it, then i got it n was like wow this is such a good looking game, i rinsed it (admitedly i wouldnt of if there was no achievements, as this game was the one who got me addicted to them lol) then i waited for the second one n that came out n i was like OMG this is 1000 times better this is awesome... then brotherhood came out and they added multiplayer (a pet hate of mine hate tacking on multiplayer to a single player game grrrr)) i played it through n thought hmmm this could just of been DLC or something then revelations came out and i didnt want it but i got it anyways eventually, played a couple missions and thought wow they are milking and killing one of my fav franchises and iv done a few missions n just cant be bothered now this one has been announced n im like meh whatever
  • Benjamin Franklin bo staff weilding assassin go! Just like in my dreams...
  • God save America!!!!!!!
  • for those you wondering what he would climb... look up newspaper drawings from the revolutionary era of Philadelphia and Boston. I am hoping for Philadelphia to be the main setting.
  • this will be fucking shit, fucking american cunts!
  • I really hope there is an achievement for shooting someone in the knee with an arrow.
  • One question... Why is everyone saying he's a Native American? How can you tell? He has a tomahawk and a bow, yes, but that coat definitely has some European styling to it, as well... How do we know he's not a colonist?
  • @107 You must not love the series that much, if you can't comprehend why the plot of the games actually DEMANDS one this year. Hint: The upcoming modern day 'event' in the series... it corresponds to a certain upcoming 'event' in real life.
  • Killing redcoats sign me up
  • America > England. Go drink some tea and get ready for a great American story bitchesss :)
  • where on earth are people getting the idea that there were no cities in the 18th century?
