Team Fortress 2 DLC Headed to the 360

Team Fortress 2 DLC Headed to the 360
Written Thursday, May 22, 2008 by Alan Pettit

Shack News has a chance to speak with Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi at the EA Spring Showcase last week, and he had this to say about TF2 content:

"We're looking at bringing the Goldrush (map) and the new achievements and stuff out to the 360. How and when is still sort of being determined, on pricing and that kind of stuff. On the PC it's sort of wide open, you can release stuff whenever you want. On the console there's a little bit more of a pathway. What we've been waiting for is until we had a critical mass of new content to put out, so we feel like we're kind of there now. We'll probably be making some announcements pretty soon on what will happen with the 360 stuff."

Now, he mentions the achievements they added to the PC version (and before everyone asks, NO, these do not go toward your gamerscore, these are only shown on your Steam profile); however, adding new achievements to the 360 version would be a direct violation of Microsoft's policy. Currently they require 1000 out of the box and an extra 250 through DLC, sure. But, they have set a max of 99 achievements per game, Orange Box being the first (and the reason) for the new rule.

Also, Valve was famously quoted as saying this about content:

"You buy the product, you get the content," TF2 designer Robin Walker stated. "We make more money because more people buy it, not because we try and nickel-and-dime the same customers."

So why are they working out pricing? Why are they trying to bring more achievements to the game? Looks to me like Valve doesn't know heads from tails with Microsoft's DLC policies. Which isn't a shock, considering they've long been a PC-exclusive developer, only porting a few games to the original Xbox.

It should be interesting to see how this all pans out, but for the time being at least know you'll have some extra content, if nothing else.

I ain't getting the FLC if you have to pay for it! It's free on the PC, why charge us just because we're on a different platform? I was thinking about going back to PC TF2 as the games are less 'full of cheese-kiddies' and Goldrush is just too much fun! This may swing my decision.

Love this game but I need so many achievements in it that it gets daunting ... few people I know have it, tho.

tf2 was fantastic. one of the few online games where 98%of the time i would finish top. but i lost interest when i ran out of achievments.

Yeah to bad you will probably have to pay for the DLC. So glad I traded OB in for the PC version. Already have been playing with the new medic weapons.

I wonder if MS will allow them an "exception" to the 99 max achievements policy since you can argue OB was really 5 games in 1.

Please, don't give us any new Achievements. Some of those Achievements looked difficult and only-by-chance type of Achievements.

As much as i would like to love team fortress 2... it sucked, there was no longevity to it... especially after the easy achievements for it were unlocked.

I still haven't played TF2 which is a shame, hopefully the DLC is good and MS lightens up and lets EA add achievements

Have they fixed it yet, it was barely playabale when i got it and after weeks of trying to endure it, it just ended up pretty much broken in terms of lag, such an interesting concept and a great addition to the orange box. I might get this if TF2 doesn't lag like hell.

Funny how its over a year after this was posted and Valve has show its self to be an idiot again.

Like when they said we'd have all the HL2 episodes by Christmas 2007. Or how they're thinking of Left 4 Dead as a game that people will play for years to come with added content instead of sequels. Or how they said I'd have my Half Life 2 Episode 3 by now!!!! Yes I already said that but where the hell is my episode 3?!?!

Damn you Valve!! *shakes fist*

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
