First Sleeping Dogs Live-Action Video, Screens and Details Are Pure Martial Art

Square Enix might not allude to it directly in its press release, but it looks to us like Sleeping Dogs is indeed the publisher's take on True Crime: Hong Kong having bought the rights to the game off Activision last year. Announcing the game for real with the first four screenshots and a blistering live-action video that's like a trailer for the best martial arts action movie never made, Sleeping Dogs is a Hong Kong crime story that casts you in the role of undercover cop, Wei Shen.

Like past True Crime games, Sleeping Dogs is an open-world action game set in the vibrant neon-soaked Hong Kong, where Wei Shen finds himself embroiled within the inner workings of the Triads, and a story of loyalty and betrayal unfolds. And as the trailer suggests, there'll be plenty of intense gunplay and visceral martial arts action to get caught up in.

"Sleeping Dogs has one of the best melee combat systems out there - it's super brutal with devastating takedown moves, and when added to UFG's proven heritage in driving games, a first class story and the vibrant backdrop of the Hong Kong underworld we get a fiery recipe with fun written all over it," said Lee Singleton, GM of Square Enix London Studios.

Said melee system will enable players to wield weapons and engage in bone-crunching combos, as well as performing nasty executions with refrigerator doors, circular saws, incinerators and phone booths. Nice. Sleeping Dogs is scheduled to release later in the year. Check out the debut live-action trailer and first four screenshots below.

This is one of the best live action shorts in a long time, certainly up there with the halo live action shorts.

I'm kind of glad that Activition droped it and Square Enix has bought the rights looking at the screen shots, they look a look better than when we last saw screens of the game when activision where in charge of it. I'd also like to see some gameplay footage to compare to the gameplay footage we saw from Activition.

I'd buy the hell outta the dvd if they ever made that short into a full feature film!

From the screenshots and what i've read about the game it sounds like it's going to be like the ps3 exclusive Yakuza except going the opposite way and starring an undercover cop instead of a yakuza member (or should I call him leader?). Good stuff if so!

This just means that Activision will see renewed interest in the product and pull out some ridiculous reason to sue Square Enix a month from release. Just like they did with Brutal Legend.

Thank GOD they're going to spend their time on something (hopefully) good, rather than wasting resources on a third K&L that they'll just muck up further.

Holy shit, that short was better than half the full length movies I've seen lately. Anyways, can't wait to see how this turns out, if it's near as good as that trailer was, it'll be a day 1 buy for me.

When it got cancelled the first time around I almost cried, but this is music to my ears. And now that it is in Squares hands I know it'll be even better than before.

I'm loving this so far, and am really excited for this, but I can't help but feel that "sleeping dogs" doesn't really fit as the name...

So that trailer was fuckin' HOT! Right!? Well as much as I enjoyed it, how about some gameplay footage, cuz lets face it, if the game can't even live up to half of what that trailer was, than we might be looking at a dud. LETS HOPE NOT!!

Loved the True Crime games! Also, from the game's Facebook page:
"To ensure we accurately communicate the universe of Sleeping Dogs, the team at United Front Games worked directly with Goldtooth Creative to ensure Wei’s actions reflected those made possible during play. In short: yes, you can get creative with a meat cleaver." Read more about creating the trailer on the official Sleeping Dogs site.
