This Week on the XBLA: Penny Arcade Adventures
Written Monday, May 19, 2008 by Alan Pettit

I thought about putting the entire title of the game in the title of this news post, but it would have looked a bit daunting. Probably not as daunting as the price tag that comes along with it though.

"Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One" will be this week's game at a whopping 1600MSP, aka $19.99 USD. However, the game promises 7-10 hours of gameplay, so that is definitely worth it in my opinion.

seems rediculously overpriced, i mean how long can it be when its an arcade game, you can get alot of retail games for that price

I want it bad. But I am iffy on the price since this is episodic. I think 10-15 bucks would have been more appropriate.

I'll wait for a couple reviews before I look into this, but if I manage to pick up 1600 points I'll think about it.

Though if there are only 200 gs points... :P

I love how everyone is saying they won't pay $20 for it because it only has 200G. The achievement system sure has changed things.

It has 7-10 hours of gameplay, that's what you're really paying for. I've seen plenty of people pay $60 for games that have that little gameplay.

RPG is my favorite genre, so if my wife lets me, yeah, I'll be getting this.

Monday, May 19, 2008 @ 08:27:33 PM

1600 points? Do these guys REALLY think their game is worth double or even quadruple other Xbox Live Arcade games?

I've read their comic and it isn't really funny. Will DEFINITELY be skipping this game.

Monday, May 19, 2008 @ 08:34:02 PM

Jeesh. The complaints about pricing. I mean everyone is entitled to their opinion but is that what matters know. Things cost money, FACE IT. Since when do achievements negate pricing? Are any of you even familiar with the game? This is not your typical XBLA game. $20 is a reasonable price for what I think is gonna be an awesome game.

Not looking to denounce (even if it seems i did) anyone's opinion, just letting off a few of my own. I am an achievement whore, but i will be picking this up because its gonna be a GOOD GAME.

:-)

its not the gamerscore im thinking about.. its the fact its a arcade game.. not paying 20 bucks for that.. period. gameplay is alright,, but when u pay 60 bucks for a retail game.. your paying for the name of the game.. and graphics and everything else.. i dont even buy many games new. the thing is arcade games are games that dont have the graphics and name and full game gameplay and next gen everything.. so there is a reason they shouldnt be more then 400-800 at the most.. i think this is a hugh moneymaking scheme and i go down to there level.. there are plenty of cheaper games on the arcade to keep me happy for that amount of time..

Monday, May 19, 2008 @ 08:38:40 PM

Actually I'm surprised it ended up being 1600--I thought I heard they were considering 2400 a while ago.

I DO wish there were more than 200 points available, but for $20 I might consider it if the demo was good. Puzzle Quest was, what, $15? And it was some of the best XBLA money I've spent so far.

Monday, May 19, 2008 @ 08:40:26 PM

An xbox orignal costs 1,200 ms, so why does a Arcade game cost 1,600 ms?

yes its made from a comic series but i dont think it would be worth more than a orignal. Orignals get more than 7-10 hours and some have Live/muilty-player.

you could get 2 800ms arcade games along with 1,400ms arcade game.

Its not going to be worth that much. perhaps 1,200ms, but not 1,600ms.

Pants is right by the fact that achievement pts has changed the system fo buying games, although the price is steep, if the gameplay is worthwhile then it's a buy. Though I wonder why not just make it a regualr release and not arcade???

Charging $20 for episodic gaming is ridiculous. Assuming they follow Sam and Max's lead and make around 6 episodes, thats gonna be over $100 for 1 full game. There must be a price drop if they expect anyone to take this game seriously.

Alright, look at it this way (and before I start, I also agree that Gamerscore has changed things for the worse and the better...)

LOST: Via Domus was perhaps $50-60 and offered just over 3 hours gameplay.

Eragon, Surfs Up, Avatar and even Gears of War (multiplayer aside) all cost between $50-60 and all offered less than 6 hours singleplayer time.

So for a $20 game to offer 7 to 10 hours? Seems like they have out more effort in than some "real" games developers.

Of course....it all depends how it plays.

I'll give it a trial but the 1600 points does throw me off a bit. I haven't even been buying arcade games much anymore.

But I do agree with Pants, think of how many games we buy for $20+, many times $60 for a 5-10 hour game. But I also see a price drop happening for this whenever they decided to do that for arcade games again.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 @ 12:32:06 AM

Agreed, try the demo if you are unsure and then make your opinion on how you want to spend your money!

I agree with what Pants and others have said about the gameplay, the real problem here is that XBLA is seen as JUST short little arcade titles that are worth $5-10. They have no place to sell full priced games in their marketplace (unlike Sony's store).

Yes they did create a separate XBox originals to hock the old crap, but hey complainers, that's 1200 points for games with NO achievements that you can usually get the retail disk used on all of those games for cheaper!

Twenty bucks for a game based off of a crappy webcomic? And it brags that it only offers 7-10 hours of gameplay? Screw that, I can get an Xbox Originals title for five bucks less AND get at least double that many hours of play.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 @ 01:21:37 AM

Castlevania: SotN is half this price, and probably has far better RPG elements in it. Also, depending on how you want to play, can be a far longer game than 7-10 hours.
(... I usually beat it in 40 minutes, but I see people on my list who took 20+ hours. Just sayin'.)

And Penny Arcade fans say that Tim Buckley (CTRL+ALT+DEL) is a sell-out. Even if he is, I think Gabe and Tycho just kicked his ass in a selling out competition if there ever was such a thing.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 @ 01:47:13 AM

I'm mildly amused by the outcry here; if the game was sold in-store for 20 bucks (or even for 30), people'd eat it up and congratulate everyone on a good bargain game. Just because it's a downloadable game doesn't make it any less of a "real" game; also, as noted above, there's plenty of games I've paid 60 bucks for that didn't last as long as this supposedly will (or even close), and plenty more that were just drek instead of something that is likely to be very well written and generally entertaining.

And so I say: try the demo. If you like it, pay. If not, let those of us who do enjoy such things in peace instead of hollering about how everyone's a sell-out and the end of the world is nigh because a solid piece of entertainment cost 20 bucks.

I'm buying this. I love games that I can sit back, enjoy and laugh my butt off. You say 20 bucks is too much, right? Wanna hear my math. Using movie ticket price against movie length, you should pay 7 dollars for every 2 hours of content, if you're lucky.

This game has an achievement for finishing off an enemy with a cat who licks himself. The Fruit F*cker is in it for cripes sake! And I'm sure I'll replay this game and get more out of it and its future episodes than I did out of any full priced game.

And don't talk to me about them selling out when anyone would love to be able to help create their own game. Tycho writes it, Gabe creates the characters and settings and then the team make the game based off that.

Also, this game got an 8.5 in OXM and I expect more great reviews. An

I've been pretty excited about this game for a while being a Penny-Arcade fan and all. The game seems like it'll be something I'll enjoy, based off the content and how it'll play. $20 only looks like a lot to pay, but I think it's a fair price for the amount of game we're getting.
I'll be happily playing this on Wednesday

"Do you people even have jobs?"

Comments like that are irrelevant. As is this- I work full time for The Home Depot, for $14/hr. Neat, huh?
That said, I still don't feel like spending $20 on an arcade game, since, the arcade was meant for, you know, arcade games. If this was released as a bargain title, I would probably buy it.
I really don't want to see more $20 arcade titles in the future. I think if this sells well that it'll make more developers think "Well, perhaps 400/800 pts is too low. People would pay more for this, right?".

yea im going to pass the whole thing of it costing 20$ is where it starts, where as the game only boasts 7-10 hrs of play, you could spend 60 on oblivion and get 200-500 hrs if doing all the sidequests and so forth. orange box works well also. or hell buy a football or even invest your money. that interwebz is my two pennies.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 @ 06:02:45 AM

Sigh, this won't start anything. Well, maybe they might bring the Sam and Max episodes to Live Arcade which I would love, but thats all. Castlevania sold great, but you didn't see a sudden rise in 15 dollar games, did you? No, and this isn't going to change anything either. At least not price wise, but you might see more companies willing to try different kinds of games.

If you're not into this game, then obviously you won't pay 20 bucks. Thats fine. They expect most of their sales to be via the PC anyway, so its no biggie. All I ask is people try the game and see how it is.

Oh, and speaking of Orange Box, I find it funny you're outraged at this price and Valve was making people pay 20 bucks for Episode 1 and 30 for both episodes together. And they only last 5-10 hours. You may think

Stop complainging about the "arcade game for 1600 points" because this is more than an arcade game. This is a whole game. It got the go ahead from MS to go over their file size limit for arcade games, and it is actually going to be multiple Episodes, that you can download and carry your files over between. So in the end, it can very well end up being a 60 dollar game, but with 8-10 hours per episode, you can be looking at a 40+ hour game...

Some of the things included:
• Create-a-Player System lets you design and develop your own character, seeing it come to life in 3D and in the comic-style 2D cut scenes
• Dynamic turn-based combat system, over-the-top animations and team-up moves during enemy battles
• Classic adventure game play combines with RPG elements to unravel the game's m

think about it $20 for this game up to 10 hours even if they make 4 games like this thats $80 or if they make 3 $60 now thats going to be 40-30 hours for the game now what you can do is get a real RPG and get Lost Odyssey everything a good story needs drama comady love ect. for $60 thats cheaper then this game is going to be in the end and with the 40 hours of story and up to 65-75 hours if you want to do all side mission and get everything now thats sounds like a good deal to me and yes i do also think this is just a scam of trying to make money from all the fans and 1600 points no thanks
