If we can't lend mates a game then that will suck MAJOR balls.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:12 PM
I like my 360 right now, but I won't mind a new console in a couple years or so.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:13 PM
Anti-used games detector? So pre-owned games will be worthless? That will suck.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:14 PM
LOLWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:14 PM
yeaowch no more borrowing games then =/Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:15 PM
Every major games retailer just shit them-selves.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:16 PM
LOLWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:16 PM
sounds like a download only future im hoping this isnt true otherwise that would suck so badWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:17 PM
So they expect us to pay £50 for a crap game, that is not worth £50? Stupid, If this is the case, I'll stick to my xbox 360.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:17 PM
if this is true about the used games thing, i will not be getting the new xbox and will probably stop playing video games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:17 PM
I'd like it to play Blu-Ray movies but I'd rather not play games on that format.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:18 PM
hell, renting and borrowing games helps with future purchases.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:18 PM
If I can't borrow games from friends, then what's the point of having friends...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:19 PM
So if I want to lend my girlfriend a game to play in the other room she wont be able to? Fuck that.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:19 PM
If this is the way that video games are going I will bail. I have been thinking of just getting a PC set up for strategy and the odd FPS and with this and the limited time I have nowadays I think I will do just that. Greed.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:19 PM
if it comes with an anti-used device i won't be getting one. i'll get a good PC instead.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:20 PM
I don't see this happening for used games...I see this more as a feature to stop people from being able to burn pirated copies of games and play them on modded systems... seems more like a way to keep people from modding games to me. There is no way they would alienate the whole used game industry. We all know that sharing games also leads to game sales because people share games to try out and can later buy if they want to.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:21 PM
Love how people are assuming / speculating on something which might not even be true.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:21 PM
we'll all say we're not gettin it but we'll still end up gettin it when we see them in the stores lolWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:22 PM
Really hope this isn't true. This will mean the only way to play older games will be via GoD. NOT a good thing, especially if there is a version with a small hard drive.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:23 PM
Ok, basically for me its pretty simple, i'm a multiplatform gamer, i own a PS3 as well, if however the next Xbox included some kind of anti-used game feature and i couldn't buy pre-owned (i can't afford to buy new games all the time like alot of gamers) or even borrow games from my brother/friends then its boils down to one simple solution....................ill be done with the Xbox brand altogether. Im sure many others would do the same and prefer to buy a rival console that allowed borrowed/used games to be played on them.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:24 PM
If this is true i'm not buying the new console that is just plain stupid..Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:25 PM
I highly doubt the anti-sharing thing will be included. There would be a tremendous backlash if that was the case. Just think of the repercussions of that. It would take business from may places; i.e. Game Fly, All rental stores, Game Stop, Pawn Stores, etc. I would also be willing to say that it would take profit from developers and publishers. Here's how. I'm not sure I will like game X. So I'm not going to spend $60 on it. I see it at RedBox and drop $1 on it for the night. I go home, realize I love the game. Take it back to Redbox the next day and go buy it. This would not happen if this Anti-used game thing was included. Personally, I would buy far less games. The only way I would buy the same amount of games if if they drastically reduced the price of a new game and that won't happen.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:26 PM
Anti-used games? Did Microsoft get bought out by EA? Looks like this last generation of consoles, as rocky and crappy as it is, will be the last one I will buy into as a gamer. I'm content with my PS1 and Super NES.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:27 PM
Anti-Used Game system?? I'm wonder why this is...probably because Microsoft or any of the game publishers dont make any money on used games, just the retail stores...I'm sure retail stores dont like this news....Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:28 PM
i hope none of this is true , anti-used games? , limiting yourselves to an old storage format? All seems very blinkeredWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:28 PM
I hope they don't do the anti.used thing that may have quite a large impact on the global economy! Imagine how many people who would lose their jobs and have to shut down their stores/sites=people lose their jobs=less people who pay taxes and are unemployed and start begging the government for money=less money for the goverment=less roads, less houses less money for the schools wich equals in uneducated people and the circle goes on...2012 The day the earth went bankrupt...THANKS MICROSOFT!! i know i'm exagerrating abit but still. P.s sorry for bad english I'ma swed.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:28 PM
I won't get it at all if it's like that I still kept my phat xbox 360 over the slim one.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:29 PM
Anti-used games will only ecourage modding and pirating.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:29 PM
Doesn't Sony own the Blu-Ray format? It seems odd that they'd want to give Microsoft any advantage in that area really.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:29 PM
If this "anti-used game device" is real then MS can kiss my ass with the next xbox. I don't want all the aggravations of PC gaming but none of the benefits. I've got the feeling I'm gonna go PC next gen, it's becoming clear the consoles are being turned into a joke.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:30 PM
Anti-Used bollox? Going by what they're trying to say, that means I can only play a brand new game once, because then it becomes used and invalid?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:30 PM
@31 no Sony does not "own" the Blu-Ray format...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:30 PM
New games only. They'll abandon that when it sells nothing at launch. How much money do they think the average young student gamer has?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:31 PM
Thanks Microsoft, you just made it easier to pick a next-gen console! Unfortunately, it won't be yours...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:33 PM
Blu-Ray would be good as DVD is completley out-dated and it would save those damn horrbile scratches on disc's. (:Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:34 PM
@31 No Sony DO NOT own the Blu Ray brand, they are simply one member of the Blu-ray Disc Association, they do not control who can and cannot use the format.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:34 PM
This would truly alienate the majority of gamers out there. My friends and I plan on which games to buy so we can borrow games to eachother or play co-op together. Im sure everything would be online download only so buying used games wouldnt be as a big of a deal but it still makes me very concerned. Without used games there would be tons of titles you would miss out on because they only carry the new stuff in stores.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:34 PM
On the subject of used games I personally think that retailers are ripping us off- Just check out the prices of preowned games in GAME etc. It's only around £5 more the new game. Plus the amount they give you in trade is disgusting. Though if this did happen with future consoles then we will be seeing most specialist stores go out of business and/or branch into other avenues of income. Preowned is a large share of the income for a lot of the retailers.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:35 PM
@37 is limiting yourself to Blu-ray for the next console any better than what the 360 did with the DVD format?50 GB might seem like a lot of storage today but 3-4 years down the line?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:35 PM
the more rumours i read the more i hope they are not true, blu ray rumour aside.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:37 PM
Gamestop will finally be shutdown! :DWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:38 PM
anti used game software is a reason for me not to but it, I have 2 xboxs, one i use the other my kids use so they will no longer be able to play my games. that means i have to buy 2 of every game. i am really hoping this is not true.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:38 PM
I smell more monopoly... This is kind of like SOPA here, piracy means companies get no money from us who have no money, if you buy anything used than the company gets no money from us who have no money. Everyone wants to rip us poor people off cause we have no money, the government does this, and everyone in big corporations do this. We must tell the developers of such material that enough is enough and perhaps not buy the xbox -720. I love Sony, and hope they do not follow a similar path, but then again these ARE rumors, and most are always either false, or just scrapped by the developer. We shall see what is true and what is not when the next-gen console comes out. For Microsoft's sake, I hope it isn't true.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:38 PM
No more used games huh? Well their goes 90% of game retailers supporting Micro$hit. Unless Microsoft made every game 100% downloadable, then they wouldn't be able to sell a single fucking copy. Gamestop would drop them and stop selling their brand, as would every other used game retailer. I predict some BS PR statement within a few hours from Microsoft.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:39 PM
God yes!! Destroy the 2nd hand businesses!!!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:39 PM
Blu-ray cool. Everything else is getting a bit out of hand. I've been borrowing games from friends since 1997. Why would anyone want to stop that?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:42 PM
If the used game thing is true, I'm not buying one. I'll stick to the 360 thanks very much :) Regarding bluray... I don't want bluray, I do not NEED bluray.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:44 PM
Damn do people really still borrow games?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:45 PM
would be better if everyone has to buy the games original imoWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:45 PM
@47 If you destroy the 2nd hand used game market, and even destroy gamers ability to borrow games from other people then you basically destroy your own console brand, Microsoft would lose way over 50% of there users of the xbox brand and they would probably retire from the games industry altogether. If Microsoft did implement this then all Sony would have to do would be to allow used games on the PS4 which would ultimately make PS4 the undisputed console wars winner.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:46 PM
I can see them adding an anti-pirated game detection doohickey. Something that will no doubt be circumvented on the drop date. However, to remove second hand use is crazy...and in my opinion will never happen. The season pass has been implemented and integrated into several developers games. This will remain a way for the software companies to draw revenue on the reselling of games for several years to come.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:47 PM
Gamefly won't let that happen. It would literally put them out of business.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:47 PM
This reliable source crap is a bunch of bs. The fact all these gaming news sites are reporting on this in a manner as if it is news and not a rumor is pretty pathetic. First a 6670 then a 7000 series, now blu-ray, and the wording using anti-used game doohickey, really? How about the way PC does, activation keys tied to an online account maybe? Either way, sounds like a bunch of bs.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:49 PM
@50, yes people with a brain still borrow games, im not stupid enough to go out and pay full price for a game i could easily try first or even play for free.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:50 PM
If they have an anti-used game feature, I won't buy it, simple as that. Most of us can't afford to drop $60 on EVERY new title that comes out. That would be an incredibly short-sighted decision by MicrosoftWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:51 PM
Bullshit overload...BULLSHIT OVERLOAD!!!!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:52 PM
Cool, so when your Xbox 720 breaks down, you cant even play your own games on another console. Great! Not being able to sell my games will result in me buying only the top games I know are great. Not gonna buy "maybe" games anymore. Because in case it sucks, you cant sell it on. Microsoft has no idea how stupid this idea is. I'm not gonna pay 60 euro for à game i'm not 100% sure about, and cant sell on if its not my kind of game. Serious reason for not buying the next Xbox if it is true.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:52 PM
You know how much trouble it is getting your DLC moved over to a new console, can you imagine the pain it will be trying to get Xbox Support to get your disc games to work when you have to replace your system?? And I am against bluray as a game format. That's my biggest issue with the PS3, the slow read rate, which requires the huge mandatory installs. I really don't like waiting 1/2 hour to play a new game, which is why I play my 360 instead.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:52 PM
I've seen this coming for a while. Developers and publishers have been whining for years about gamestop and the like selling used games. Yeah this system won't be in my house if this is how MS wants to play things. I already have the PC, and have been using it more than the 360 PS3 or the Wii, so yeah I think I made a good early decision to start back into the Steam gaming circle. I give it 6 months if that system is included, and they will do one of 2 things, they will either kill the ability, or the next gen xbox will be announced as an epic fail.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:52 PM
I agree with the Bluray addition completely, would be nice to have it. As for the "anti-used games" detection. Bullshit. Microsoft, or any publishers, are not stupid enough to want to kill off the used game market, or do anything close to it. They want a piece of it, but killing it off or hurting it too much is bad. If someone buys Bad Company 2 used and enjoys it, they may end up buying Battlefield 3. Buying used can always lead to future games being bought new for certain customers. No used market would be horrible for any of these companies, and they won't do anything built into the console to hurt it. Especially Microsoft, since they don't get hurt by used game purchases much, if at all.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:54 PM
Uh, I'm pretty sure that bullshit about anti-used games will not happen! I really don't care because when I buy games, I buy them new. HOWEVER, I do rent games sometimes, and wouldn't this in effect make all rental games useless as well, seeing as how they're the same as "used" and same as lending a game to a friend? There's NO WAY Microsoft would be allowed to just say all these businesses, like Gamefly, Netflix, Redbox rentals, used games on Amazon, etc. would have to just shut down their gaming business because Microsoft wants to demand people buy their games brand new at retail. Fuck that bullshit. What I want to see is stricter anti-piracy taken into effect so no one can get away with modded systems anymore. Taking away the right to buy games cheaper for people that don't have a lot of money will seriously drive their customers away.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:55 PM
I agree with #57.. That would be very selfish of them. It would also put other companies like Gamefly & possibly Blockbuster completely out of business. I would probably make the switch to Sony if they did that. Also, Kinect 2?? They haven't even done anything with the original Kinect yet. I have honestly only played 1 good game on it...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:56 PM
@56 of course people like me who buy every game original are idiots. we just are able to read reviews and know what we like. also there are demos out there. its a no brainer that if the new xbox will have this feature, the ps4 will have it to. this could be a request from the companys as well since they loose a lot of money on 2nd hand games. people need to pay for the games they want, there is a lot of work behind it and its also important to earn money to make new games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:57 PM
PS3 did this exact rumor about the anti-used games thing, it won't work, MS will lose out on too much money if they do this, and Sony will take full advantage over this, I say the only thing I care about in the next Xbox is that it's region free! I bet that is what almost everyone wants, get 1 Xbox and it does for every type of gaming.. rather than having to buy an Xbox for a certain region to play certain games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:58 PM
Anti-used-games-detector means that if you buy a game, play it at home, and then bring it to your friends house, or just lend it to them, IT PROBABLY WON'T WORK. THAT IS BULL SHIT.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:58 PM
If they plan on actually not letting you lend people games or play used games, Ill stick with my PC gaming only.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:58 PM
LOL @ Anti used games system. What a load of crap.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:59 PM
Wow, anti-used? Seriously? That's gonna do a number on a LOT of retailers. The fuck? If that is true, gonna stick with my 360 and probably become a more PC gamer.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 01:59 PM
Anti-used games?! That's all i really play....ATM I only have a game collection of 4 games I want to keep atm(trade/sell everything else) so this rumor would limit the number of games I bought significantly.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:00 PM
no used games, no new system. Simple.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:01 PM
Yea, what the hell, who would make an "Anti-used game system". That would basically drive Gamestop out of business because the only reason to go there is for their cheap, pre-preowned games. Don't be silly with that Microsoft, just have backwards capability for ALL past Xbox games and win the hearts of many many fansWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:03 PM
And here we have more people not understand what the word "rumor" means.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:03 PM
Sucks for Gamestop and other retail stores that sale used games lol but I doubt they'll actually put that anti used game bullshitWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:03 PM
#54: What's your point ? Rental is forbidden in several countries for years now. What most of you fail to see, is that the game stores are the greedy bastards. Ridiculous trade-in prices only to put said game 5$ below new price. It's about time the companies put some pressure on this filthy money-grabbing business. No more used games, or start paying fees for every sold used game to the relevant devs. Stores have to put in jack shit to maintain the used business, pure profit... and it's downright obscene compared to what effort other businesses make to manufacture/sell/... products.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:04 PM
@#50 - Of course people still borrow games! Don't you have any friends that say "hey let me borrow that game to try out?" "Cool, take your time with it, it's an awesome game!" Hey I didn't know you had this game. I've been wanting to check it out. Do you mind if I borrow it?" @#60 - XBox definitely needs to upgrade to Blu-ray. I'm tired of having to switch games on multiple discs, which I install all of them anyways, which takes up more space on the hard drive than a single install of what the PS3 requires, ex. Rage (all 3 discs on 360 = 22GB install); Rage on PS3 (1 blu-ray = 8GB install required). Not only that, too many times the 360 has had to compress their video for certain games in order to fit on discs where the video ends up looking SHITTY, whereas Blu-ray it looks pristine. Truest example of this is Final Fantasy XIII. Enough said! Games are only going to get VASTLY larger in size and the specs are going to be even greater on games coming soon and DVD will not cut it unless they seriously want to dumb down the quality of cutscenes and textures in order to make them fit on as least amount of discs as possible. If you seriously can't wait 10-15 minutes for a blu-ray to install, you need to slow down your life a little.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:05 PM
i hope if their is a anti used game detector no one buys that system just to show them we will not support something like that if i pay money for something then i have the right to give it to someone elseWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:06 PM
If they do that anti-used game thing, I will personally call Microsoft saying 'up yours bitch! you just lost a customer'Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:07 PM
So... If the console can't play "second hand games", that also means its not backwards compatible too ;-) This is madness, I totally agree with the statement that it will only "encourage piracy". I often sell my finished games as a means to buy new ones, without this ability I can't afford as many, in the ling run this can only hurt me more. Imo. I expect a clarification in the next few days.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:10 PM
@77 Blu-ray is great storage wise for todays game but for the future? you already stated in your post that games are going to increase in size but your happy to limit the console straight away?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:12 PM
The times, they are a changin!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:13 PM
Lets all make plans to make a post on microsofts forum if their isn't one all ready if we tell them now they may decide not to do it if it's true in which case this gives them a good out they can say it was never true since were still in the rumor fazzWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:13 PM
blu-ray = nice!!!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:15 PM
Let's not forget that these are just rumors and nothing is confirmed. The only way I can see this happening is if games use a cd key feature like pc games but, as bad as it sounds people are still going to buy it regardless because Microsoft is going to find someway to milk these cows.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:16 PM
Anybody stop to think this is just being said to PROMOTE used-game dealers like Gamestop to cut in the developers? There was talk a while back about a possible deal being made, but the retailers wanted all kinds of incentives. THIS idea will stifle the used game retailers a little bit and hopefully lead to a fair deal between retailers and developers. At least that's what I'm hoping :) If not, its not a deal breaker for me. I buy 95% of my games new...sucks for my friends who take turns borrowing games though :PWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:16 PM
The anit-used thing. Is AMAZING! For one, it will probably put gamestop out of business.. It will sell more new copies generating more revenue It could lower the price of a new copy by 10 bucks best of all it means your game, is linked to your account. I bet if the game if offered as a Game on demand you can download it for free with proof of the diskWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:16 PM
Chances of bluray on next xbox 99% Chances of unboard kinect 90% (might try to sell it seperatly for money) Chances of used game detector 7% (anyone can see it would kill the xbox) Chances of no one bitching about rumors 0%Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:17 PM
All I want to know is what will happen to my achievements?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:19 PM
If the anti-used games thing is the case then I doubt many people will switch to this "new console" besides no one likes change especially when the change sucks :LWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:20 PM
Now that i think of it, I really bet this is just a way to tell if you are the owner of the game, for the Games on demand like I said above. I really don't think they are going to just kill off used games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:20 PM
Honestly dont buy into any of the crap thats flinging around. All these "sources" are doing is flinging speculation around. Until Microsoft comments on things, its best not to pay attention to rumors like "oh you aren't going to be able to play used games" or "theres going to be blu-ray oohh". To me, after seeing three Rumour posts in just the last couple days, it sounds like A. the guys on the internet are throwing ideas on what the 360's successors features will be or B. in the case of this recent rumour, that guys are stating stuff that riles people up and fuels the fire. At the very least maybe guys making authoring posts here should cutback. Kinda meaningless to put up a topic on a rumor that OBVIOUSLY is going to fuel the fear and is very likely NOT going to happen. First its Microsoft points being scrapped, then its what the 720 will be powered by, now its not being able to play used games. Whats next? Halo 5 will be controller free and you HAVE to have a Kinect?? The cost of the 720 will be near a thousand bucks? Seriously, until the actual MAKERS of the system come out and confirm the specs and truths of the console, you shouldn't buy into all this BS.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:21 PM
The anti used game thing sounds like it might involve having to purchase a pass to play a used copy of a game, in the same way that we have to purchase passes to access online features of used games. Lets hope if this is the case then they dont set the price of the passes too high. I think thats pretty much the best case scenario if this anti used game thing is real. Game will be fucked if this comes to pass, as will a lot of smaller chains and independant shops around the world. Some free advice, if you have shares in Game... SELL SELL SELLWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:22 PM
No used/rented games? Then this will be the first major console I will never buy.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:23 PM
I highly doubt that anti-used games thing. Microsoft can't be THAT stupid...right? RIGHT? Oh shit...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:24 PM
As for #13, completely agree. I have several games in my collection I bought solely because I loved the rental of the game. Borderlands, Red Dead, Assassin's Creed, Child of Eden, Gunstringer, etc I ended up buying new solely because I rented it and liked it. I'm not about to take chances on unknown games since demos are hardly a sure thing.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:25 PM
' but the possible inclusion of anti-used game measures that could involve linking games to your Xbox Live account sounds like it could be a massively divisive and controversial feature.' If that's true, then it also sounds highly possible that the PS4 might not have it, and if that's the case, I'm afraid Microsoft can suck my c**k. If it ever comes to this... I weep for the future of gaming. Fortunately, not everyone will be able/want to play online, so Microsoft are fools if they think they can push this idea.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:26 PM
It's funny how everybody is assuming Gamestop will go out of business. As if used 360 games are the only thing they sell.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:26 PM
I really could see an activation key being implemented on the next generation of consoles in response to used game sales. A lot of negatives would occur--too many to be worth listing at the moment. If that were to occur, however, I mine as well just ditch a console and play games on my laptop and/or keep my Xbox 360 around. It would be so much more convenient.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:28 PM
I just don't see how anti-used game technology can even be implemented. For example, what happens when I take my gamertag over to a friends house to play some splitscreen coop or vs game. Does my gamertag become associated with his copy permanently? What happens if I happen to have the same game and play with people online later? Am I only able to save progress with that copy? The whole thing sounds suspect. I buy alot of used games, I have a Gamefly account, but I also buy a brand new game or two a month. I am against piracy and welcome measures against that but not being able to trade games with friends and rent titles from Gamefly will seriously impact my willingness to buy another Microsoft console. I have a feeling I won't be the only one either.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:29 PM
@98 Look in to most gaming store and you'll find that the majority of thier used games are xbox 360.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:33 PM
Anti-used ? If thats so, definite must not buy.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:33 PM
So obviously if it's blu ray that rules out backwards compatibility? (sorry not really in the know about blu ray) That's a shame If so as I'd like to Carry on using my 360 and carry over my gamerscore etcWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:34 PM
If you can't play used games then it's a no go for me! I have plenty of older games on my 360 to play before having to jump ship. Microsoft - don't screw this up!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:34 PM
I hope it comes with a giant port in its backside where i can stick my pecker in and fill up the hard drive with man-goo. seriously, the anti used thing will cause rioting in the streets. I will burn down my gamestop in a fit of psychotic rage even though it technically would be on my side and all.... ok, maybe i'll burn down walmart instead.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:34 PM
I give it two more hours and we'll have yet another topic titled "YET EVEN MORE XBOX SUCCESSOR RUMORS"Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:34 PM
@104 blu-ray is just a storage medium , it will have no affect on backwards compatibilityWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:35 PM
according to my friend who work at microsoft headquarter in seattle, the new xbox 720 looks like dreamcast style. it has a small screen (LCD) on the controller.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:36 PM
Doesn't bother me. PS3 won disc data fight long time ago and MS must embrace it eventually. Instead we are stuck with games spanning up to 3 discs at times, where it only takes on Blu Ray.. Also I am actually happy to hear that they are thinking about implementing something like anti used games block. I always by my games brand new, be it on release day or few months later and I would rather see something like this than increase in initial cost of new video games for next gen consoles...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:36 PM
Haven't read any of the recent comments... but it seems like they're trying to make console gaming like PC gaming... no pre owned games. I'm fine with that of the price of new games drop like PC games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:37 PM
@109 Hmm, thats strange. That sounds awfully similar to the Wii U.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:37 PM
I like how they never ask the consumer what they really want.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:38 PM
I know it's only speculation, but if the anti-used games thing is true I probably wouldn't fork out for the next-gen Xbox console.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:43 PM
If the anti-used game turns out to be true it would probably put a lot of companies that sell used games out of a profitable market such as Gamestop, Best Buy, eBay and Amazon. What are people suppose to do with used games now if they can't turn a profit? Just throw them away since they can't give them to a friend or relative?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:43 PM
This would surely mean then that once a game is played once it's value becomes zero. I pray this isnt true.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:45 PM
Seriously where do all these rumors come from!!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:48 PM
I wouldn't be too worried about the whole "Anti-Lend" feature. Sony advocated HEAVILY on this feature before the Next Gens were released. According to the old rumors, you would NOT be able to play anything that wasn't initially "installed" on your system. Which pretty much said "NO LENDING! NO USED! NO RENTING" unless you planned on playing THAT disc only. It obviously tanked. They'd be much more inclined to finally do Download only titles which would utilize the same half and half feature on the HDD and console that Add-On's and Arcade Games do. You can't bring your HDD to someone's house and expect to have all your content. Part is IN the hardware, the rest is on the hard drive. Not worried. Though, I don't lend/borrow much anymore anyway.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:49 PM
That's just great. Kill rental and used markets at the same time? That's just what the industry needs. And who said that eliminating the used market would keep next gen games from being more expensive? Do you really think that's the case? Are you truly that naive? This would be nothing but bad. If they do something like this and Sony doesn't, I'll be getting a playstation 4. Screw M$.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:51 PM
I doubt very seriously that they will block used games. They would only be able to do this if every console was connected to XBox Live. Without that, they have no way of checking if that particular disc has been played on another system. My suspicion is that this is really just a built-in mechanism for online passes. Similar to how XBox Live provides the framework for multiplayer gameplay, this "doohickey" would provide a standard framework for an online pass.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:53 PM
I love my 360, and I am pretty interested in the next gen system from microsoft, but if they do in fact impliment "anti-used game" programming/software on the new system, I will NOT buy it. My girlfriend and I live together and are both gamers, and with the exception of Borderlands (and Borderlands 2 when it releases), we have no need to own more than one copy of a game (with the case of Borderlands, we have two 360's, one in the bedroom and one in the living room, so two copies of the game are needed to play co-op together sans split-screen). In fact, we recently combined our games and traded in all the duplicates. Tying a game to your gamertag or console via a serial number or ID, forcing 'multi-gamer households' to buy multiple copies of the same game is ridiculous. I'm really hoping that they will either drop the idea all together, or they have come up with a way to allow multiple gamertags to access the same disc. I'd be okay with not being able to buy used games so long as we only have to buy one copy of the game, though honestly, buying games used from Gamestop (7-Day, any reason, full refund on used games) is our main way to try out games we're not 100% certain we want (especially if there's no Demo for the game on Live).Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:53 PM
It's got to be a load of BS. If it was true then what is the point of having roaming profiles.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:53 PM
And if anything, the Anti Lend feature will most likely be gauged towards online features to titles. I'm sure lending your buddy Darksiders which is SP only wouldn't be too industry damaging.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:55 PM
There is no way that I know of outside of digital distribution to block the use of a game. If its on a disc it can't be blocked unless you are required to enter a code for the game that is only good for one person. This has been utilized on PC games, mainly mmo's, but is completely useless without the internet. Blocking used games would be more of a game publisher deal and they probably wouldn't do it unless there was at least a 70% or higher install base for online players otherwise they would lose money from all the non-internet people who can't get the game.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:57 PM
Anti second hand games will make me go back to PC and get some decent graphics & cheaper games, terrible terrible idea. Shame on you MS if this is trueWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 02:58 PM
Wait and see time. That anti-fun doohickey sounds ominous.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:02 PM
Sony must be happy, every new game on blu ray disk under licence =££££$$$$Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:03 PM
well, i've been playing ps3 a lot lately and if this happens i'll just stick with it.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:05 PM
Finally blu-ray comes to xbox if this is true but on the flip side if they have some anti-used game feature gamestop would probably sue the shit out of them! No way could they get away with them....I hope.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:10 PM
If Microsoft could actually get their head out of their ass and create a good console I might actually switch back to Xbox gaming...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:10 PM
A reliable source told me that the new xbox was going to have a smoothie machine and the ability to launch tactical nuclear weapons from my backyard On a slightly more serious note, seriously why is this "news" It's all rumor and speculation, is the gaming industry really that slow right now?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:11 PM
Really look forward to Wii U, Xbox 720 and PS4. I don't care about stuffs in it. All I care is about my account, watch movies, friends list, achievements and play games on them. This perfect fit for me. :)Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:14 PM
I will buy new console anyway.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:15 PM
It's funny how many 'Gamers' show their true colours, when they realise they might have to pay full price to play games. If you love gaming and playing games, stuff like this (WHICH MIGHT NOT EVEN HAPPEN) shouldn't matter. I will continue to buy games Day One. And an Anti-Used system is really not that big a deal. It's to combat the used games market, which is killing the industry. So if you had any actual sense/knowledge, you'd be all for this.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:16 PM
what does the anti-used thingy do though? If it constantly pops up a message where it says "Cannot launch game. Has been previously owned" then that sucks nuts. If it just senses that you bought it pre-owned and prompts you that you have to buy an online pass then that's somewhat okay cause lately gamestops been ripping off developers and giving an online pass out for free with games that need passes to play online. Either way its gonna be taking lots of our money if we have to buy em all newWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:16 PM
No microsoft, you will NOT be adding an anti used game detector....Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:17 PM
"it offers 25-50GB worth of data storage rather than the 9GB offered by a DVD", Bitch please...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:17 PM
I highly doubt this rumor as microsoft would be screwing over smaller games developers. How many times have you seen a game you might want to buy beacuse it's looks quite good but your not sure. But you might completely avoid it now because your not willing to take the risk because you might be stuck with a rubbish game. Not to mention the effect on the environment...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:19 PM
The used game arguments here are ridiculous..."I'm not paying $60 for a new game"...that same game is $55 used. When it gets cheap used, its still about $5 more for new. Like others have said, this is a rumor, and should by no means be taken as FACT. MS has been moving to a strictly digital platform anyhow, so it might be as simple as a rumor starting because someone said digital games would prevent used game sales.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:23 PM
Sounds like they're out to destroy the game rental industry.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:24 PM
Anti-Used game in Xbox 720 = PS4 for me.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:25 PM
Next it will mandatory accessory that you'll stick in your rectum in order to power up the XBOX. Bottom line is no used games no new system. The more games I get for my PC the less I play the inferior console so who knows if I'll get a new system anyway.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:26 PM
No used games NO BUY NEW CONSOLE.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:27 PM
I have been a loyal Microsoft fan this generation, but something like this would be enough ammunition to make me switch it up...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:28 PM
surely they arent this stupidWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:29 PM
haha i have 3 kids in my house all with xboxs and ps3s if they think i am buying 4 copies of every game then they can kiss my ass i would say goodbye microsoft hello ps3 or ps4 my new favorite games console that actually cares about the consumer and doesnt want to milk them dry.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:30 PM
I find both of these to be extremely unlikely. First of all, blu-ray is a Sony technology, which Microsoft will never, ever adopt even if Sony green-lights it (which will also never happen seeing as they are competitors). Second, I doubt microsoft would put in a feature that may very well lead to the failure of their new system. The publishers have been playing the role of the villian quite effectively with project $10 lately and I doubt microsoft would want to take over that role, nor do I see how doing so would benefit them. I don't know who this "reliable source" is, but they're making some pretty odd claims.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:30 PM
This thing will be the biggest failure since the Virtual Boy if it starts bitching about used games... Online passes are already a painWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:33 PM
The implications of an anti-used game system are a potential nightmare for thousands of people that work in the retail industry. Many people could be put out of work or business just because Microsoft somehow aren't making enough money from us already. I know it's only a rumour, but I really hope it isn't true. Major retailers have already said they wouln't be against paying something to developers on the sale of preowned games, so why not explore that route? This will just kill off many gamers who either rent,or choose to wait to buy. They won't just "find" the money to buy new all of a sudden, so games won't be played as much as they are - surely a bad thing.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:35 PM
Well looks like this is going to be the end of GameflyWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:35 PM
I might be wrong here, and I'm sure they could be a fix to the problem, but lets say there IS an anti-used game w/e... and then your console breaks.. wouldn't you have to buy all new games? No one would buy a system if they had to do that.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:36 PM
@135 Yes, but it also means people who brought the games full price can't trade them in if it emerges the games are complete s***e. It means people can't lend buddies games anymore - Damaging for the industry itself, seeing as this is one of the surefire ways word is spread about new franchises. It also means that if your account happens to get hacked, you're totally stuck without a games console for days. Oh, and the concept that the used market is somehow 'killing the industry' is a load of rubbish, in the same manner as 'the ozone layer is still depleting' is a load rubbish.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:37 PM
The likelihood of them doing the "anti-used game" thing is very slim. I'm sure it came up as an idea to combat piracy, but I'm sure it was nothing more than that. Think about it. If they do this, it will start a vicious cycle ending with Microsoft losing it's base and money. We all know how M$ likes its moneys. It's funny how hard they fight against piracy... the harder they fight, the more of the problem there is. Oh god.... think about Gamefly.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:41 PM
Danm I read about the first 77 responces and had to stop. These are just rumors, but M$ has and probably still is looking into how to bipass the used games "issue". Their are alot of valid arguments posted by everyone here regarding why they should or shouln't add this so called "doohickey". My thoughts... 1) You can still try out a game at a friends house by playing it on his box with his account. In addition if said doohickey is implemented im sure developers would then release some sort of demo for most if not all games. 2) Maybe said doohickey will result in less revenue lost and more revenue for developers which will in turn lower game prices for us? I know im reaching here... 3) Digital Downloads (Games on Demand) This is how you will buy older games no longer in stores and I imagine the longer a game has been out the lower the price. Maybe after every year they will autimatically decrease the price by a certain percentage and then cap it at a predetermined "lowest price". By doing this they essentially control the used game market but still allow us the consumers to purchase their products at a lower price over time.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:42 PM
I think it will be related to your xboxLive acount not the console you are playing in. So if the console "burns" you can get a new one and still play the games you have. or it won't make no sense! :)Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:54 PM
What will happen to game renting?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:58 PM
If they really do find a way to block used games I wonder if that will be seen as a lower initial sales price for games? I doubt this will happen because of this thing called greed, but part of why games are £50 new is because resales make the company no money and likely account for at least half of all game sales. If you get rid of used games then all sales contribute to the companies finances [allowing for lower prices.]Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 03:58 PM
there were rumours of this sort of anti used game rubbish at the launch of the PS3. Look how that turned out. Not going to happen.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:00 PM
Everybody here needs to relax, I think the blu ray is a great idea no more disc scratches and swapping disc, As for the Not being able to play used games there'll probably find another way around it where you can play rental games and not used either they might scratch the whole idea period, Right now this is just all hear say till its set in stone then sit and moan and groan hey worse comes i'll jump to the ps4Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:03 PM
@54 Totally agreeWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:04 PM
At this moment its all just speculation, but until Microsoft releases details, (presumably at this years E3 event) I'll be looking forward to the new console. Unless the "anti-used game doohickey" is true. Then I'll stick with my faithful 360. I mean I do like buying new games, and supporting the developers in making more quality games, but without the option of buying second hand, my Xbox 720/loop (loop is just ridiculous) collection would probably be no bigger than 5 or 6 games until the release of the next thing. Talk about cutting your dick off to spite your balls. Here's hoping the "reliable" source is as reliable as a chocolate fireman.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:21 PM
I'm hoping that it only links online functionality to an Xbox Live account. Otherwise, I will not be buying a system that does not promote playing games at another person's house. Could you imagine if movies had an anti-used function? People would pirate movies more than ever just to watch them anywhere they want and not just on one disc-player in one house.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:26 PM
Well for a start I would have expected nothing less than blu ray in the next xbox or else it would be shown up by sonys over half a decade old hardware. As for the no more used games thing, well if thats true it would be cheaper long run to invest in a good pc. If the next X box ends up going for comparatively light weight hardware to lower the entry price for casuals, churns out tons of kinect crap whilst releasing only the odd halo game(all of this I wouldnt be surprised about)then you bet im going over to the ps4 unless sony does the same then I guess its the pc route for me. Still the xbox still has afew years of life in her and microsoft hasnt completely abandoned its hardcore audience in favor of the casual market. yetWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:27 PM
probably not true on the game locked thing. thinka about Lovefilm and gamefly. im sure at least Lovefilm will have somthing to say about it since they have there own app on the current xbox and they rent games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:29 PM
I shudder to think how many game rental companies will lose money if they bring this in :(. xxWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:29 PM
There is absolutely no possible way that Microsoft would be so stupid as to include anti-used game devices in it's next system. If there is any truth whatsoever to this rumor it would be that somebody at Microsoft thought they could throw it out there and see how reaction to the news goes. Obviously the news doesn't sit well with us. There are dozens of scenarios and reasons that make this a bad idea. I've got a 360 in the living room and one in the furnished basement. It's not bad carrying a hard drive from one floor to the next. I refuse to carry a console up and down stairs for years or to buy two copies of the same game because of this stupid idea. I would even go so far as to say that this would never hold up in court. I forgave you for the RROD and E74 fiascos, Microsoft. Put this device into the next generation machine and you and I are done.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:33 PM
To all of you defending the anti-used game feature you also need to consider that not all games are equal. This could also put some lower level studios out of business because customers won't buy their shallow games if they can't sell them back. This in turn will drive down their sales and hurt profits. This idea, though noble, has way too many flaws to be considered viable. The fight against used games needs to go against gamefly, Netflix, Gamestop, etc.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:39 PM
That's right, Microsoft. Make it so everyone HAS to buy three or more copies of the same game... and goodbye used trade-in service at our retailers... assholes.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:41 PM
NOT worth the weight if it forces you to link a game to a specific console.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:41 PM
Sweet guess I got out of the Gamestop game at just the right time.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:50 PM
OK, so basically I could be a reliable source since I would say the next xbox will have a Blu Ray player and a new, improved kinect sensor. I would even come up with the whole anti-used game "doohickey" since it was rumored that Sony was going to implement that into the PS3 when it was released.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:54 PM
if they stop used games then ANONYMOUS will hack them just like they did SONY for 23 million account/credit card infos ... A.k.A ( Headbuster 80{was max cap} on pc mmo Everquest 2Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:55 PM
I sure hope this isn't true. I have two 360's and I RARELY play both of them at the same time, let alone the same game. Do they honestly expect me (and many others in the same circumstance) to get two copies of every single game I get???Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:55 PM
ooo and i was one of the 23 million that got hacked so ....Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:58 PM
Anti-used game detector? Really?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:59 PM
Its not going to have an ani-used game doohicky lol, it would loose more money than it would generate we live in a monetary world based on statistics, the numbers just dont add up with that kind of move. It wont even be an ani-pirate game detector, because it will be removable so anyone who can pirate a console will be able to remove a part of the device, again useless waste of money Like the idea of blu-ray i guess, but it'll just mean more nice looking shiny games, but with all that time going into looking good were in for even more lack of innovation in the industryWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 04:59 PM
So that means I'll not be able to rent a VG?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:00 PM
I am w/ everyone else on this boat. I loved getting used games since I can use my GameStop card to get an additional 10% discount. I also own a PS2 and a Wii if I need to move on to something else. IF they do this and is in fact true, then they will learn the HARD way especially since game prices have moved up as well (remember the time when it was no more than $50 a game for any system? I miss those times).Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:00 PM
It'll be like PC games. You can't lend those out either. I know it's a big deal, but you tend to forget it's already in place.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:01 PM
So I pay £40 for a game, then I get bored of it and so i'm stuck with it. I sincerely hope that isn't true. Alot of businesses rely on second-hand games sales to make a profit. Please don't let this be true.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:05 PM
In my house my wife and I both own Xbox's. So, if we wanted to play a game we'd have to buy two copies. That is serious garbage...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:05 PM
anyone on ATM on live i got a question about haveing my pic up top mine isnt showing plz send me a message in game im on atm Greedypoet ;)Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:09 PM
IF this is true its gonna be a lot of butthurt angry gamefly/rental fans because they can no longer get games designed for kids just for points anymore without buying it new now lol. I despise the idea of used games(you dont know what some shmuck been doing with that disc plus you are supporting crooks like gamestop(USED NEW GAME=55$ NEW GAME=60$ lol) and renting(dont get me started)so microsoft...BRING IT ON BABY!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:11 PM
If the anti-used game system is real and is in the next Xbox, I'm quitting video games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:11 PM
how do i get my gamer score and pic to show !!?!?!?!?!?!?!? anyone plz im on in game plz send me a voice invite plzWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:12 PM
I'm pro Xbox but if this anti-preowned thing gets through I will completely go anti-xbox.Possibly anti console entirely.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:16 PM
Anti-used games detector? So pre-owned games will be worthless? That"s bullshit. This might make me go PC and PS3, or super nintendoWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:18 PM
so a cd key with every game...WTF?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:19 PM
How could they get away with an anti-used games feature? The disc isn't pirated, it's a legit copy. My DVD and CD player don't refuse to play discs I got at somebody's yard sale. If they do that, all Sony has to do is NOT do that and be able to dethrone Microsoft in the blink of an eye.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:21 PM
"I'd like it to play Blu-Ray movies but I'd rather not play games on that format. " Why? It's the same thing as a DVD, just more storage. It's not like you have to pay more for it. Skyrim for the PS3 costs the same as Skyrim for the 360.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:21 PM
ya there's no way this anti used game crap could be real or even make it past the discussion table. Something like that would cause one of the biggest backlashes in gaming history and could very well destroy the next xbox.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:28 PM
dangerousWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:30 PM
These articles are made to generate more hits on a website. Trolling the trolls. GG.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:31 PM
So if I buy a game, I can't lend it to my brother so he can enjoy it too? Bullshit.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:34 PM
If this anti-used games thing is true i wont be buying the next console i'll just shift 100% to the PS it's not as if microsoft has an impressive collection of exclusives anymore.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:37 PM
im staying with my 360Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:37 PM
A friend of mine works in GAME (UK) and says the rumours going around there is that the next gen consoles games will be download only doing away with discs completely. This is so they can make the maximum amount possible as well as doing away with pre-owned, rented or borrowed games. Although, first things that spring to my mind are, what about people with no internet (admittedly, not many of us, but there are people who don't have the luxuries most of us do) and secondly, wont that requite UNBELIEVABLE sized hard drives? This is just what I've heard from a friend, simply passing on the message.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:39 PM
How exactly could they block a used game anyway? The disc doesn't get altered when it gets traded in.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:42 PM
If you can't buy used games, Microsoft is going to lose a LOT of money. Nobody will buy the next Xbox if it has that ability.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:43 PM
Well, I'm shifting to PC gaming, catch yeez!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:49 PM
once again, I don't understand why they don't use hd-dvd format for games. wouldn't this cut dramatically down on piracy? who owns an hd-dvd burner really? Or blank media? They should focus on streaming for movies.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:53 PM
@185 That was one of the most idiotic things I have ever read.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:56 PM
If we can't buy used games, rent games or borrow games from our friends.....well that would be the worst thing to happen to gaming since motion controls and region locking.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:57 PM
Cant see there that anti-used game feature being used it would kill established businesses like Gamefly and GameStop. GameStop makes its money off its used products not its new, if this is true we'd start seeing locations closing because the cost of keeping locations versus the revenue they make wouldn't be close to equal.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:59 PM
this would be by far Microsofts worst company decision ever, BUT by the way they have allowed game company's to charge for being able to play they're game online. I defineately would NOT be suprised by this little BS scheme. who in all honesty buys 1 single game and doesnt take it back to trade it in adventually when you REALLY dont got the cash at the moment for something else you want? like if you cant buy pre-owned games, you obviously cant trade games in. which would be the WORST idea ever. I think this would effect Gamestops revenue in a overall yearly income too. because there is ALOT of people who wait a little bit just to buy a game USED just so they dont gotta pay $60. Microsoft is just money milking company who looks to rip off all and any customer they can pull in with their bs marketing.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 05:59 PM
Could this be the end of xbox? What a stupid idea, if thats the case whats the point in buying games at all what just 2 throw em away. Now im a true gamer ive spent £1000s on my xbox and i wont be buying the new1 if at the end its gonna be worthless so suck it u robbing c*nts ill stick 2 my pcWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:01 PM
I'm a fan of both the xbox and the PS3, both have its perks. but as of the next gen systems. if xbox "whatever you want to call it" has a anti used game thing then I'm going to the one that doesnt have that. that is a bad idea. good idea is a way to know if its a burned game that was not paid for, that would be fine by me. And I'm not a fan of the tablet rumor eitherWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:12 PM
So this anti used shit is pretty much the same as a PC, where you register the game and then can't install it on any other PC. I don't really see an issue with it, I don't buy used games, and I don't sell back my old games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:13 PM
I think the bluray thing is pretty cool, since it'll shut the PS3 guys up, but the used games detector is BS, fast forward 5 years when some of the games are out if print, how are people supposed to play them?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:14 PM
Download only games are not a viable option for cruddy countries like NZ, as we simply do not have the Internet service available (at a decent price anyways) to float it. With small datacaps for stupid prices, I for one will not be too keen on having to download my games. I understand this is merely speculation (or scare mongering, you choose), but if they block 'used' games that would cripple the second hand games market. EB Games etc etc will lose a lot of revenue, and surely Microsoft wouldn't alienate the companies that keep people playing their games (and buying DLC etc.) Only time will tell. As I'm new to Xbox360, I'm more than satisfied for now and will stick with it until the future becomes more clear :)Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:16 PM
Settle down idiots its just rumours LMAO jeez Laughable that its even news.........Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:29 PM
Wait...So no more borrowing games? ♫ Gamefly and Blockbuster is gonna lose some money real bad ♫Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:32 PM
the anti used gams scenario could make the games market go several ways scenario A: will destroy all used games vendors, seller, rentals etc scenario B: it could drive the cost of new games down, say for instance a new game is released and gets panned by critics, it'll just lower the price over time.. and to be fair most games this current generation get reduced pretty quickly, in the past month i've bought spider man edge of time, king of fighters 13, rayman origins, brink, dead island, dungeon siege 3, marvel super hero squad, la noire new and all at around a 60-80% discount from original price so i'd say it can only be a good thing and eventually it'll inadvertantly drive down the cost of gamesWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:32 PM
Gamestop = Sell new game for 60 bucks. Buy used new game for 20 bucks. Sell used New game for 50 bucks. profit 90 bucks. Only way microsoft could keep used games from being tradeable and stuff is making CD keys or code it into the game to go into the system to log then connect with net to communicate to make sure its not used elsewhere. Hard to do with a console. People who play offline and never connect to net will have problems. and after a month or so of a game being out CD key generators will be created for games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:32 PM
The world is gonna end in December 2012 so it won't happen anyway..right? -.-Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:34 PM
I already have a blu-ray player..and as for the used games..if that is true that's a load of crap! If that is the case they can keep the 720 or what ever they are going to call it.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:37 PM
No. I am outright not buying this if it means no lending of games, nor buying second hand. Then again.. I might pick one up second-hand, with games already assigned to it. *insert troll face at Microsoft here*Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:42 PM
I'm actually really pumped about the speculation for the next Xbox. The rumor about the jump in processing power and all that is just what I wanted to hear...more is better! Blu ray? Yes please. Release window of Fall 2013? Awesome. This is when I feel ready for the next gen. It's too early to be pushing for it fall of 2012. Anti-used measure? This one is half and half. Not being able to borrow games from friends sucks, but I sure don't feel sorry for people who buy used games. The difference in price between new and used is so minimal to begin with and no money from the purchase of used games goes to the developer...so why would you ever want used games? Plus, Gamestop and the like rape and pillage when it comes to used games. They give you nothing when you sell to them, but turn around and sell them 5% under retail usually. They price gouge so bad it is ridiculous. In any case, I say bring it on Xbox 720!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:43 PM
Xbox Forever B******S! This will divide the rich from the poor, no more annoying kids in halo, the parents control the wallet and will just buy them 2nd hand wii games insted. YeeehaaaaWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:45 PM
@11. I agree completely. If this is true, then full retail games should only be costing about £10-£15 quid otherwise, I'm out.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:48 PM
I'd be down with the anti-used system if it only stopped used game stores, but no lending of games. For example, if you had to confirm that your friend's gamertag could play your game, a game could only be connected to a limited number of Xboxes (like Netflix and its instant streaming devices, or just like a PC install code), or if you could transfer licenses. It would be great to fuck with Gamestop and their crazy prices for buying and selling used games. But, this could also hurt a lot of games retailers as used games are probably one of their most important income generators, so jobs could be cut as a result, which would suck. We shall see what happens, I suppose.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:48 PM
@135 You sir are either a troll or an absolute fucking retard. "killing the industry"-bullshit. The vast majority of big Publishers (and an increasingly scary number of high end devs) are out to make as much cash as possible over putting out a decent product and caring about fan base. All these bullshit things they've implemented in the last year or so: online passes, episodic content, pre-release DLC, assaults on the used game market, DRM locking for PC gamers and now this nonsense with actually locking used games out via the console-this, you moron, is what's killing the industry. The last used game I can remember buying was TES IV back in 2006 and that was only because they didn't have any new ones in stock in GAME, and it was the only game I wanted as my free game with my xbox. I have since bought probably in the region of 90-100 more 360 games since then, all of which have been brand new. This however is down to personal preference and financial situation. As someone who was medically discharged from my last employment and now unable to find work, the used game market is a viable option to continue my favourite hobby as it is more cost efficient. In short, you don't know what you are talking about and you can certainly count me out from paying for this puddle of wank. My Xbox 360S suits me down to the ground.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:50 PM
Oh, and I just remembered, this would just totally FUCK Gamefly altogether. Their entire market is used games...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:59 PM
I like poniesWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 06:59 PM
if an Anti-used game is the case, Might as well PC game instead.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:05 PM
if that thing uses anti used game whatever whatever i'll throw it out a window and go buy a gamecube before i shell out 60+ dollars for some terrible title with only 8 hours of actual gameplay... im looking at you L.A. Noir 2Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:06 PM
@87 'It will sell more new copies generating more revenue'. And how do you suppose a lot of gamers fund most Of their new game purchases? Usually buy selling or trading Games they are finished with. This would pretty much destroy the smaller games companies, as people will buy a lot less games and be very very choosy, usually only purchasing the AAA titles. At the moment I don't mind buying a game that might be a bit shit, because I know I can sell it on later. No way I would take that chance if I couldn't get any money back for it.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:06 PM
Guys, you'll be able to share games with friends. BluRay is also a win.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:07 PM
Next thing will be you have to pay for storage usage on your hard driveWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:09 PM
Thats the rental market gone too, which the games companies do make money from if its true. I think if it is true though MS will probably lose as much as they think they will gain from the backlash, and like others say what about familys who have 4 accounts with the gold family pack?Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:19 PM
they will gain way more money. people will be buying new disks left & right.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:19 PM
One thing I really hope Xbox 720 not gonna screw up like million players and myself who got red rings of death just less or year later after launched (for me got it after year later) Let hope Xbox 720 isn't face horrible deadly RROD. I am sure it wouldn't happen since Mircosoft learns the problems so 720 should not affect but who know then. I wish RROD stay out of our lives forever lmaoWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:23 PM
@234 Actually, 90% of the games aren't worth 60 bucks. The multiplayer games = 60 bucks worth, RPG's amassing over 100 hours = 60 bucks worth. EVERYTHING ELSE, is pretty much not worth it. Doing this forces the progress of gaming into a very narrow boring field versus a diverse one full of fun but worthless games.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:48 PM
This is horse shit. What if our system fries and they have to send us a new one? What if WE have to buy a new system for whatever reason? Fuck that.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 07:52 PM
I agree with #17 Also, I don't care about kinect, I don't want to pay for it if I'm not going to use it.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 08:05 PM
Hmm, not being able to play used or borrowed games? Somehow I don't even think MS has the cojones to try that. The main thing they want to do is make a return off their investment, pissing off that much of your player base is not going to make that happen. AFAIK most people are perfectly happy with the 360, adding another hurdle (besides the price and questionable backward compatibility) does not make sense, no matter how much publishers wail and gnash their teeth to the contrary.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 08:16 PM
I will accept the idea of that anti-used game thing as long as the games are not that damn expensive and half the price of todays' videogames! But since it will be too expensive then screw this stupid anti-used bullcrap!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 08:18 PM
If the "Anti-Used Games" program is real they won't sell many on release, well other than to the people looking to hack a bypass for it.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 08:25 PM
sony does not own blu ray tech how ever they do own a bunch of patents for blu ray so microsoft will still pay them for those unless they go nintendos route and use another high capacity dic format to avoid paying sony or any other blu ray patent holder any feesWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 08:30 PM
So I pay $60 for a game, and cannot sell it? Talk about a hole in the water. Gamefly will go out of business in no time. If Microsoft does with they did to arcade games, and becomes that greedy, and possible charge $70 for their cod and halo and knock offs of them, I will not even consider buying one. X360 will be uber cheap when 720 comes out. So I would continue using until they discontinue service, or possible change over to Playstation.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 08:34 PM
I don't think this anti-piracy thing might not happen in the way most people think and I hope it doesn't cause in the summer time it is easier for me to by used to catch up on some games that I have had to pass on in the Fall and Winter and with the Blu-ray that can be good and from what my nephew told me and from what I have read the it take about 1 hour and 22 minutes or more to install a game on the PS3 and on my 360 it takes me about 25 to 30 minutes to install on the hard-drive. But lets wait and see what happens before we blow this news out of proportion.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 08:37 PM
The only way to speak out about this that Microsoft would actually care about is with our wallets. If it does come out with some kind of anti-used component, the I will not be buying it. If you don't like the idea of anti-used, then you should do the same.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 09:12 PM
All these comments about rumours broke the page!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 09:12 PM
I think the online pass system could be reworked without the need for anti-used game tech. I will not be buying this with that feature, it is just ridiculous, I'll be starting my PC gaming career if this makes it next gen.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 09:18 PM
There goes gamestop businessWednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 09:38 PM
I am most likely going to be disappointed when a new console comes out IF you can't transfer your 360 account to the new console and play 360 games on this new console. Here's why; Reason 1: ( my major reason ) My gamerscore. All the time I put into it will have been for nothing. Now that's not true but I'm sure I will feel that way. When every e goes to buy this and theres only hardcore xbox 360 fans still around like me and all my friends are playing this new console, well I'm going to want to buy one. Reason 2: There are some great 360 titles. I would love to be able to play them on a new console. Most of my games are used though so I don't know if I could now. Now it seems places like Gamestop would be going bankrupt if this were true. Well this is my opinion and thanks for reading it.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 09:52 PM
Don't kill the Xbox Microsoft!!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 10:00 PM
I was a PS3 Hater, but if that is true, I will buy the new Playstation instead of the new Xbox...Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 10:09 PM
damn that sucks about the used disc shit. when ive finished my games i always pass them on to a mate to have.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 10:18 PM
I doubt they would do that. Then gamefly, blockbuster, and redbox would lose sales because those are all used games played by everybody. Then Microsoft would loose alot of money, which they don't like, because they will lose business with those three major markets.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 10:42 PM
I understand the need for the gaming industry to make money (and used games obviously doesn't make them any) but I buy just as many new games as used! To take away the ability to borrow or rent a game you're not sure you'll even like will kill the next-gen Xbox. Hopefully Microsoft is listening!Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 10:54 PM
I do not buy used games but this would mean the end of gamefly, trading/lending games to friends, Used games for stores, and renting games. This is a horrible idea.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 11:16 PM
The used games thing would blow, not because I buy used games (I do, but not enough to miss the option) but because we have 3 gamers and 2 xboxes in the house. It already blows when we can't play a game save on the other system because we started it on the system where DLC is licensed to the console and another family member.Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @ 11:43 PM
So can we possibly assume from there comments to the rumors that the next one wont be for a few years and some more "great" games will be coming out?Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 12:01 AM
Sounds like yet even more bullshit from Microsoft and all of it somehow not surprising, especially given the amount of crap we've been force feed lately.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 12:03 AM
This will probably land them more big name exclusive games if the developers know they would get profit on every copy sold. I can understand trying to cut the used profit industry out of the equation, but they have to figure out how to do it without punishing the gamer. One thing they could do is allow you to enter 5 additional gamer tags that could play your copy on another console. This would still allow people to lend games to five friends or family on a different console.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 12:14 AM
Rumors crack me up, I call bullshit. There is no way they are going to take away the used games market. They'd be causing substantial harm to their biggest retailers. MOST people do not go to a game store solely for new games, you think anyone wants to pay full price all the time for some of the garbage that gets shoved out the door? If they'd even begin to CONSIDER doing anything like that they'd have to; 1. Reduce the cost of retail disc based game price points. OR 2. SIGNIFICANTLY Reduce the price, and go ALL digital download like they had made reference to a few years back and hard drives would have to be humongous. Neither option would earn many fans. OR 3. Sit back and do nothing while they watch themselves sell half the games they used to, unless they institute some kind of lemon law on electronic entertainment. Curiously looking forward to the REAL lowdown this summer/fall.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 12:14 AM
This smells like a trial balloon to me. Seriously, are they really THAT willing to piss off one of their major retail partners (Gamestop) by stripping them of their major business model? This is not worth worrying about yet. I have far more questions on why a next-gen box is even necessary right now.......Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 12:28 AM
Anti-used games? How could you do that without having a writable portion of the disc set up so that it could mark the disc with the system's serial number? Think about this. Also, MS has stated that lending friends your games is the best way to get word of mouth sales. This would be suicide if they implemented it. As long as they allow me to sign in with my gamertag on the new system and the 360. (when you signed on to live on a 360 it wouldn't let you sign in on a regular xbox anymore-this is what I don't want to happen)Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 12:31 AM
These are starting to sound more and more correct, or at least more logical as what this thing might actually be/have.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 12:57 AM
Will not be purchasing this system if they lock out used games.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 12:58 AM
@262 I also think they can't prevent you to play even offline without a writeable potion, but they could have like a game serial number, that gets attached to your profile kinda like a DLC license now and when you are live its checking if this license is already attached to another profile and if it is you won't be able to play online / play while signed into xbl (unless you buy another license for 800MSP?)Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:10 AM
@65 douche much? the anti used game thing will not fly!Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:12 AM
WOO COMMENT 265!... damnThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:13 AM
Two hundred and sixty sixth... FUCK!Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:16 AM
So if I end up owning two I'm only going to be able to play on one?? So what if the 720 has an opening failure rate like the 360 did??Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:23 AM
hey mam, ur going to the mall? yes why? could you get 3 copies of bf4? why 3? cuz you have 3 kids remember? *bitch*Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:36 AM
wow... so not only did they start charging you extra to play a used game online , but it seems if you buy a pre-owned game, rent it from a video store, or borrow from a friend, you are going to wind up having to pay to play it at all, and then pay to get an online pass too! what a move they made with this one! check-mate you greedy basturds...Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:43 AM
Well I can say that for me and most of my friends that if the whole "anti-used games measure" is a reality then we will not be buying anything more from Xbox. Although I can't see them alienating most of their userbase I can see something where every game has an online pass so if you buy a used game then you need to pay to play online. If they try putting something in where you need a key like a PC then the next console is going to be a massive failure.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:47 AM
Let me give you a timeline November 2012: Microsoft release new generation of Xbox complete with anti used games detector. December 2012: Reports say that Microsoft have beaten the sales records for release of both previous consoles January 2013: Sony release PS4 WITHOUT anti used game detector. February 2013: Sony report largest ever sales record for a console release in history. March 2013: Microsoft report major unprecedented financial losses as nobody else has bought their system since the release of the PS4. August 2013: Microsoft announce they are withdrawing from the console market in an attempt to stop bleeding money due to severe financial loss and the largest quarter on quarter stock drops ever recorded by a company. A little exaggerated, I grant you, but the point remains salient, if the next xbox is released with anti used game detector tech, Sony will release the ps4 without one and utterly dominate the market.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:51 AM
Yeah I can't see this happening at all. Already people here are mentioning all the things that won't work and people won't accept. I for one will not buy this system if this holds true. I have 3 kids and a wife all with their own accounts. I have a brother with whom I regurlay swap games after finishing them, I already buy 1 or 2 games a month retail plus occaisional XBLA games top of that. If they try to force something like this on me, well I guess X360 will be my last MS console then....Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:52 AM
As for those saying the anti-used device won't happen. Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft all want these devices. They don't receive any revenue from used games, and if they do it's very little. There's been rumors about a device like this for years. Gamestop has been worried about this. They make the majority of the their profits from used sales. Just take a look at the tend that is going on now. EA/Bioware uses codes in order to get full access in certain games. You buy used, you have to purchase a digital code, which could cost just as much as a new copy. This strategy detracts some customers from buying used. It's about the bottom line to these companies. I disagree with it and I don't like it but I think it will happen very soon. I wouldn't be surprised if the technology is used in the next gens.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:53 AM
Geez people Sony does not own the rights to Blu-Ray..... They are on the board for the Blu Ray Disc Association with 18 other companies.... So I am sure the next xbox will have blu ray without a doubt... They will probably just have to pay a bunch of money and join the contributors or the board. Not like they don't have the money to do so.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 01:58 AM
An anti used game detector will never work, it would cause even more job losses and ruin the Xbox. I pray this is just a rumour, I never believe rumours until I read the official statement from Microsoft but to of even heard such a rumour is sickeningThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 02:00 AM
Anti Used game detector basically means no new xbox for me. At least half of my game library is second hand i would say and i lend people games all the time.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 02:08 AM
If this is true then I'll run my 360 to the end of its life and stick to the old reliable PC. It's never failed me yet.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 02:10 AM
So what happens when the new Xbox bricks and has a failure rate like the 360 did? Anybody that bought launch games will have to re-purchase them because they'd be considered "used" on their replacement console? Yeah, I don't they'll implement this ridiculous idea. If so, I'm out. *dusts hands off*Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 02:14 AM
That's fake we could let friends barrow games or that would put gamefly and other places out of businessThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 02:43 AM
@280 The article said they'd be tied to your Live account, not your console. Still, there's no way that's true. It's far too stupid an idea, even for Microsoft. Console manufacturers need retailer's support, and stating up front "we're forcing you to kill off a large chunk of your income" wouldn't work. At all. Or if it is true, I guess I'll be cancelling my LoveFILM subscription.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 02:47 AM
The idea won't pass. But let's say it did. Very few would purchase this console. I mean, you see how mad everyone gets about online passes, right? Well, this would be the gateway to the Offline Pass and there aren't many developers or publishers that would support that. Oh, sure, EA and Activision would love to be able to say "if you save $5 on that copy of Assassin's Creed: Tactics, it'll do you no good because without the pass, your account isn't online. And if your account isn't online, you can't play this game" but they're in the minority. As much as Microsoft and other companies would love to deny you features of the things they goad you into buying, it won't work and you'd all be doing what I do: buying any and all games with multiplayer for the PS3. I'm sure even they realize it's a stupid idea, so it won't pass.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 02:57 AM
The anti-used games thing will properly be like this. When you buy a new game you enter a serial key which adds that game to your gamer-tag, so you can then play that game for the rest of your life as long as you play it on that tag. If you get board of it you will still be able to trade it in but for an extremely low price. The store you traded it to will then have to sell the game for slightly more then they gave you because whoever buys that game you traded in which is now used will have to pay an additional payment to Microsoft or the publisher of the game lets say £5 just to unlock that game on there gamer-tag. So they will basically be buying a serial key for the game and because the serial key will be added to the gamer-tag not the Xbox itself, pirates will have a problem trying to hack the games.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 02:57 AM
@281 I think that is the point. greed, greed and more greed yet another own goal by Microsoft. However it is all just rumourThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 03:11 AM
If Microsoft do the anti-used thing then they can go f*ck themselves. Right in the ear.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 03:14 AM
wow there alot of comments.. cannot possibly read them all... i will say this.. i buy alot of games at Gamestop for anywhere from 15-35 bucks... I purposely wait.. so i don't have to buy at full price... the anti used games thing is a joke... and i hope microsoft does it and their gaming department goes out of business... I have a sad story to tell(sad in more ways then 1 lol)... About 5 years ago or so, i can't remember exactly.. I really wanted this game...bad. So I purchased Final Fantasy 11 off of ebay for 50 bucks.. with all the expansions... right? Turns out the game doesn't work.. I need a code.. and the code was used..., by the previous owner who sold it to me.. or? maybe by someone who sold it to him.. lol... I'm out $50 bucks, and i have to repurchase the game to play it... Companies fixed this with the introduction of Passes. I buy the used game, then purchase the pass, or online code ect... That situation will happen to everybody if this is how their anti used game system works... Ebay will take a hit...So will Gamestop, Gamefly will die a cruel death... I got a strange feeling this isn't what they had in mind.. but hey, they got a year to work out the details right? Luckily I bought like 20 games from Gamestop for 15 bucks a piece... So my next 2 years are kinda full... sorry Nextbox.. Your gonna have to wait anyways...Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 03:15 AM
I know it is only rumours, but these "Rumours" have a habit of being leaks of the truth to see what reaction they get.....It's a conspiracy MANNNNN!! ;0) I'm going on record that if microsoft or anyone else reads this that the used game ban business is a "Grade A" fuck off from me!Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 03:40 AM
Nearly 300 comments, I dont remember the last time a piece of news/rumour caused this much outrage on x360a, if M Soft ARE testing the water to gauge public response I think they have their answer.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 03:44 AM
Looks like new games will be $70 on the Xbox 720 or whatever they choose to call it. Why do I say this? They'll have to pay Sony at least $10 for every disc due to them owning Blu-ray technology.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 03:50 AM
http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news-10533-Retail-Might-Share-Pre-Owned-Revenues-If-Publishers-Kick-the-Online-Passes.html I just remembered this article. If the news in the above article is gonna happen, they'll be taking even more possible revenue from the games developers with this stupid used game system. Im sure it can't be true, otherwise there will be developers and publishers dropping Microsoft to develop for other consoles exclusively. Not just with article above, but with online activation codes as well. im sure it's all gonna be just rumours, and a head dude from Microsoft will put out a desperate statement saying its rubbish about the anti used games system... Hopefully anyway.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 03:53 AM
"but the possible inclusion of anti-used game measures that could involve linking games to your Xbox Live account sounds like it could be a massively divisive and controversial feature. This comes from a "reliable source" too, so it could be real. It's not just used games that'd be affected here, but also lending a friend a game could be a thing of the past." If this is true then it's goodbye from me. I enjoy gaming. I enjoy playing a number of different types of games. So as you can imagine I rent a lot of games. If im going to be limited to only playing games that I buy new, then im not gonna be playing a lot of games. If im not going to be playing half of what I would like to play then I might as well call myself an old fart and just stop playing all together.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 03:58 AM
No used games would easily mean the loss of 90% of their fan base. Except they mean by that more focus on Demand games, because the disc games will fade out anyway sometime in the future, believe it or not. If that's the case, I think it can't be helped anyway.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 04:07 AM
They will lose in competition if they'll forbid the borrowing thingy. One of their competitors won't - and voila! - Microsoft comes in 2nd or 3rd again.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 04:40 AM
if they honestly pull a stunt like this I will be sticking with this my 3rd 360 until it dies like the 2 that came before, enjoy the 150 or so games I've collected about 50% of which were bought new then go look up what Sony or Nintendo are doing, not only for the fact of if I wanted to be dealing with CD keys everytime I want to get a game I will just use Steam and also I live in ireland we don't have the greatest internet here and if they intend on making download only games available and them going to be upwards of 50gigs? that is my monthly download limit here, 1 game a month from my net and nothing else, no thanks.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 04:42 AM
If microsoft want to sell the 720 they will have to remove the Anti-used games detector, But i think its more likely to be for pirated games NOT used games. Original games yes yes burned up pirated games no no....Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 04:54 AM
Blu-Ray player sounds okay, but no more playing used games? You disappoint me, Microsoft.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 04:57 AM
YES!!! About time we kicked out all these casual gamers & greedy retailers ruining our hobby. Maybe people will consider buying games a bit more now rather than buying, trying & re-selling. This is good because good devs get more money & bad devs get less sales, thus weeding out the huge swathe of mediocre shovelware. Time to reclaim our hobby! I,for one, welcome our new gaming overlords:PThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:07 AM
The used game thing sounds retarded. It can't be true, say a game goes out of production for what ever reason. Getting hold of a new copy will be almost impossible. And if they do do this, New Games will need to be much MUCH cheaper so people don't want used. Most of my games are used because getting new is damn near impossible or very expensive, Only the major games I get new (mostly on release too). Although Blu-ray would be cool.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:14 AM
300thThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:25 AM
I don't think that this will happen. Video Game shops and renting places like love film would take too big of a hit. Microsoft would lose so many customers.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:27 AM
Sorry to break it to you but Xbox will never get blue ray unless they make a similar idea. Sony owns blue ray. And don't thumbs down, if you do your just an upset child.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:29 AM
If it does happen i'm pretty sure prices for games will drop by a ton as well so not really worried about it. But guessing it's not going to go through.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:33 AM
If they make it so you can't borrow games from your friends then it sounds like I'll be sticking with my xbox 360Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:34 AM
302: Hate to break it to you, but sony doesn't own blu-rayThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:34 AM
i think the "no used game" details are shit....wasn't there an article about a week ago about game manafactures talking with used games sale shops (who apparently get every penny on used sales and the makers get nothing) to try and get a throw back on used sales in return for something like cheaper new sales and no online codes???....why have or even begin these talks just to have this come up....AND FOR THIS REASON, AND THIS REASON ALONE, I DON'T BUY IT!!!.....at least i hope its bullshit.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:44 AM
So if I find a rare, under the radar game later that was opened I can't play it? Sorry, Indigo Prophecy, Last Remnant, Yakuza, etc. Guess I will never play the gems that I missed. I sure as hell am not going to buy every game that comes out.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:44 AM
I have never seen half this many comments on an article...this cuts deep. Anyone who thinks this would actually LOWER the price of new games is just foolish. The trend has been +$10 for every new generation as long as I can remember. You honestly see publishers like EA and Activision lowering their new games price on brand new hardware?? No way.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:45 AM
What about rentals what about used game shops they do know they'll be putting people out of jobs!!!Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:45 AM
@302, You're an idiot. Sony don't own Blu Ray, they're one company of a consortium of 19 called the 'Blu-Ray Disc association' that developed the tech and exist to promote business and sales for the tech. The next Xbox would be massive business for BD tech, and even if Sony didn't want them to have it, there are 18 other companies involved to say yes. If Microsoft want it, then they can have it and Sony can't do a damn thing about it.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:50 AM
@306, not quite. the article was saying that some High Street retailers were open to the idea of discussing this issue, at that point they hadn't actually been in discussion and unless I've missed something there has been no word to say that they are now either. @308, I think that's just for around you buddy. Over here in UK, I've been gaming for over 20 years and the cost of a new game now is £40, the same as it was when I was buying games for my Megadrive. I agree with your sentiment though, with no 2nd hand sales to challenge them, new game prices can jump up.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:50 AM
if it's true and playstation don't include the feature, I think the console war for microsoft would be wonThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 05:57 AM
An anti used device? Surely the only way that works is with a 24/7 net connection, how else would it know if the 'serial' has been used, pretty sure it wont come with a blu ray drive that can magically flag on to the actual disc that its been used. For second hand, just buy a second 'Offline' axbox :D Not very feasable, just hope they don't dump the 360 in the abrupt fashion the xbox got dropped, seemed to wake up one day and everything got cancelled on it.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 06:23 AM
Blu ray is a no brainer really. but anti used measures? thats getting a big thumbs down from me, not everybody can afford 40 quid a new game comes out. bad move m$.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 07:02 AM
Oh boy. This makes me nervous. No used games = Xbox disappears and never ever comes back. The 720 will be the next dreamcast. And to whomever said something about this being for pirated games, that's just stupid. A person willing to pirate games would obviously know to take this thing out.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 07:05 AM
@312, how do you work that out? If Microsoft use it and Sony don't, all the gamers will switch to PS3, Microsoft will lose outright.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 07:13 AM
@313 it would also work if all games were bought via xbox market place.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 07:13 AM
anti games? ffs ... they wonder why piracy is on the rise jeeze! im always an xbox fan but this is pushing peeps away!Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 07:14 AM
that's plain f**king stupid, definatly sticking to my 360Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 07:19 AM
next gen consoles better make the most of blu ray, ulike sony who charged more for ps3 because of blu ray and yet there games still fit onto dvd and are enjoyed by all console formates. youd have thought that with all the extra storage they could have added more to games like cod and fifa but they stayed with what could have been fit on dvd any way. waste of money and technology.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 07:24 AM
oh and as far as anti used games go, looks like ill have to watch more shit tv and actualy listen to the misses coz i wont be able to play a cheap gameThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 08:11 AM
If this was true i will not buy a game over $30.00 unless its something i really wanted. Other than that. No!Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 08:23 AM
Pre-owned games is good for business, most of the places selling pre-own games are the ones making money so they can afford to have decent games on sale brand new, not everyone can afford for every brand new game, the old games inspire us to sometimes buy the later ones. An example bought GOW 1 pre-owned then ended up buying GOW 1,2 on release, why? because I enjoyed it.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 08:28 AM
The anti-used games thing is a dealbreaker for me.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 08:39 AM
@ 324 AGREED why should we reward them for trying to limit our gaming expierences and make us spend more money for new games only, if that's true i'm not buyin itThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 08:45 AM
Used games is what makes consoles flourish beyond their years. The PS2 is still going strong because there's so many games out there on the pre-owned market, games that you couldn't even dream of getting new these days.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 08:49 AM
Dude. If they use that anti used games thing then I will lose all my faith in Microsoft and the Xbox brand. WTF kind of crap is that? They honestly expect everyone to buy new, and only new, games for the xbox console? THAT'S BS! I'm sorry, but that is unacceptable in my eyes.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 08:51 AM
One problem i can see in all of this...without the ability to rent, buy or borrow games to try them out (if you happen to be like me and are picky as a hell) then we as gamers will be stuck playing only those games that we know we like and play the shit out of. For some of us it's the Halo Series...others it's CoD...someone else it's Mass Effect. what i'm getting at is this, to include an anti-used game function/detector will not only alienate those you claim to be working for when you make the games we all love to pay, but you're going to push developers away because of the cost to include the coding required to run the damn thing. end result, lost revenue from the console+loss of all future revenues from future gamers=a really shitty decision. @everyone saying that they will not buy the new system if it includes this...come on y'all, doesn't anyone remember the whole RROD issues that took years to fix? When this thing comes out, just wait awhile...not only for the price drop that always comes, but that way all the bugs are dealt with and this stupid anti used system can be removed. Let's face it, there will be riots in walmarts the world over if it turns out to be trueThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 08:53 AM
I can see Microsoft's viewpoint on increasing new game revenue but I wonder if they would consider the long term effects on the gaming community if Anti-Used software was enabled. What I predict would isolate gamers to only "Mainstream Games" because thats all they would be able to afford. It would eliminate jobs in smaller game producing companies (something thats already happening) and the public would miss out on a lot of new inovative ideas that these companies bring to video games. The desire to take a chance on a game that isn't well known would be non-existent because you wouldn't be able to trade it in. After a while the only choices we'll have will be Call of Duty 14, Battlefield 20, and Halo 48 and kids will still be salivating at the idea of the next redundant sequel. As the article regarding Hideo Kojima states, gamers only want a specific kind of game and those games will monopolize the market.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 09:17 AM
wow. this has generated some opinion. 300+ comments. is that a record?Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 09:43 AM
300 please do not do it pleas?Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 09:48 AM
I haven't read the other comments (too many).... So basically you buy a new game for £40 or so, play it and finish it, then it's useless because you can't sell it on or trade it in. You might as well bin it! Really can't see this happening.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 09:55 AM
I will not get one then. I don't have a lot of money and I rarely buy a game. I mostly rent games, and if there is anti-used software, I would only be able to buy 1-2 games a year. That would not be worth the $1000 the starting price will probably be. Looks like I am done with gaming if this happens.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 10:03 AM
WTF a anti-used games detector? I have 3 Xbox's and 2 different accounts. If they use a anti-used games detector I won't be buying the new xbox. Because them I'm fucked up, I don't have that much money to buy every game twice and buy two new xbox's.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 10:35 AM
An anti-used detector would, pardon my french, FUCK places like Gamestop, Gamefly, and GAMES UK right out of business. I HIGHLY doubt they'd do such a thing as that. Not only would that spell trouble for those businesses but also trouble for Microsoft for pissing off most of its fans.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 10:45 AM
I really don't even see how that would be possible in the first place. Some sort of anti-pirate feature yes but something that actually knows if a legit copy of a game has been played before? I think everyone need to just calm down a bit.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 10:53 AM
if this has been said im sorry. this would mean no more splitscreen. would render the cloud pointless, why would i need my profile in a cloud if i cant play anything other than on my own console. and all games going on line, not every nextbox user will have internet. most of my friends had the sense 2 buy 360 in the first place but not all are online!!Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 11:12 AM
if anti used comes, i will go back to pc or a console without itThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 11:45 AM
so on xbox -can only play first hand games -£40/year of online play and playstation -runs all ps3 games -free online -blu ray -better media management Also IF your console breaks down or you have to sell it for whatever reason. How are you gonna play those cds on your new xbox? think microsoftThursday, January 26, 2012 @ 11:53 AM
I think the no used game policy is going to hurt the system a lot, especially if Sony and Nintendo don't do the same thing.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 12:39 PM
So that means Blockbuster, LoveFilm etc will be pretty much fucked, seems a bit of a drastic move by MS if you ask me. But hey they can do what the hell they like, right?Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 04:59 PM
Ok so if I break my xbox and I have 20+ games that mean I need to buy those again? Pathetic idea.Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 07:04 PM
Annnnnnd this means your standard edition game will now be $79.99 right? And LE will be $99.99? You heard it here first, folks...Friday, January 27, 2012 @ 01:28 AM
Pfft, who cares? I buy all my games. Better to open up the wrapper, sniff the institution booklet and disc and enjoy that whiff! Man, it's great! :) Hopefully it's true. GameStop will be killed! :D And...who lends games to friends? lol hell no! Get your own! You're not gonna scratch my $65 game!Friday, January 27, 2012 @ 02:00 AM
How is what gamefly and what Netflix do any different? Why aren't MGM Universal and all the movie studios whining like the video game studios are...And why are people so mad at gamestop? Is it cause they don't give you much trade in? sell it on ebay then for a few more dollars..Friday, January 27, 2012 @ 02:01 AM
Anti used games? That is what happens when Enormous Assholes (EA) get involved, anything those pricks touch turns into SHIT! Fuck you EA fuck you right in your cash grabbing face! P.S. if you did not know EA is Microsoft partner now and they are developing Xbox 720 together and I am 100% sure this detector is their doing cuz I read a press conference from EA a while back and they said the biggest problem is not piracy its used games and that is why EA introduced online pass!Friday, January 27, 2012 @ 11:13 AM
@298 you sir are a foolFriday, January 27, 2012 @ 02:45 PM
more then likely you will have to register the game. only one person can use that key at a time. Just like PC games. Try going onto something like WOW at the same time as someone using the same Reg. code. They will track you and ban you. Doubt really that they will BAN all used games. For rentals it will be something like a temp reg code. I really dont know why they havent done something like this already. It doesnt stop coping but it makes it easy to track when you go online to play!Friday, January 27, 2012 @ 08:50 PM
As idiotic as an "anti-used games" sensor would be, if that is indeed the case then they literally couldn't give me a free console. I would rather send it to that FPSRussia guy and have him try out an entire "incendiary" ammo episode on it.Sunday, January 29, 2012 @ 10:58 AM
A "anti used game device" would ruin the game industry and would force shops like gamestation, game etc to start closing stores down. I am 31 years old and cant afford to buy all new games after I pay my mortgage and household bills, so how do they expect school/collage students to afford them? Students buy more games/consoles than any other genre. It would be stupid to put them in the position to where they have to consider changing the console to somethink like a playstation. I hope this is just a stupid rumour, but if its not then I will have to rethink where my loyaltys lie..Sunday, January 29, 2012 @ 06:26 PM
but.. this is madnessMonday, January 30, 2012 @ 09:28 PM
That would place me firmly in the line for a PS4.Monday, January 30, 2012 @ 09:35 PM
i hope microsoft knows that their sales with severly decline along with very very few sales ever if you cant play used games and almost every single person would convert to sony. would be the biggest fail in gaming historyMonday, February 06, 2012 @ 09:09 AM
Knowing MS, an anti-used games feature isn't exactly ridiculous...Thursday, February 21, 2013 @ 06:01 PM
AND yet none of you ''Bright'' gamers thought about a digital rental store? Meaning no more ''Oh wait it might not be available today in store''. I wouldnt be against renting games straight from the console. More choice, and you dont have to wait or get out to get them. The only real problem with the Anti-used is that you wouldnt be able to swap games with friends, or even your own family.

Even more next-generation Xbox rumours are rife today, following earlier news regarding the GPU and CPU Microsoft's console might use. This latest bout of speculation comes from anonymous sources cited on Kotaku that claim the next Xbox (720, Loop, whatever) will use Blu-rays rather than DVDs and it'll also reportedly have an in-built anti-used games detector doohickey.
First off, the introduction of Blu-ray as a disc format seems like a no-brainer as it offers 25-50GB worth of data storage rather than the 9GB offered by a DVD, but the possible inclusion of anti-used game measures that could involve linking games to your Xbox Live account sounds like it could be a massively divisive and controversial feature. This comes from a "reliable source" too, so it could be real. It's not just used games that'd be affected here, but also lending a friend a game could be a thing of the past.
There's also reports from another source that the next Xbox could come bundled with a new version of the Kinect sensor, with an on-board processor. This was a feature intended for the original Kinect and would allow the device to detect player's motions much more effectively.
A Microsoft rep had this to say to Kotaku regarding today's rumours: "As an innovator we're always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of technology like we did with Kinect. We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers. Beyond that we don't comment on rumours or speculation."
Ah, yes. That old chestnut...
