Microsoft Defend Lack of Exclusives

Microsoft has attempted to talk down worries about the lack of core exclusives for the Xbox 360, saying that their approach is "quality and impact" instead of the "number of releases in a year."

Speaking to GameInformer (via IndustryGamers), Xbox's corporate vice president Phil Spencer said, "Creating core IP, as many first-and third-parties have seen over the years, isn't an easy thing. I went through the process of creating Gears with Epic and I know the sweat, time, and effort that went into it. I also worked on things like Alan Wake, Too Human, Crackdown, and stuff that didn't hit the same level of success, but had an equal amount of sweat equity and heart go into getting created."

"So it will continue to be something that we focus on with new partners like Crytek and new people that aren't announced yet. We do think that it's fundamental that core gamers look at 360 as the place they want to play games."

Microsoft roster of core exclusives, particularly strong in the early part of the 360's life-cycle, has dwindled somewhat in recent times. Due in part to the company's increased focus on Kinect and the transformation of their console into a set-top box, we've got less and less titles to crow about.

Let's hope that the new Halo and Alan Wake games, as well as those core Kinect efforts Fable: The Journey and Ryse hit the spot this year.

  • Fair play no point bringing 20 games out that are shite, 2 or 3 quality games much better
  • He worked on Gears? That means he knows about the lack of *EXCLUSIVE* Stuff to Legit Gears Fans! I agree that there aren't much exclusives for ther Xbox, but PS3 has far worse exclusive IMO.
  • I don't care about exclusives. If a game is only on the Xbox 360 why does that mean I should be happier?
  • @3 The smug satisfaction of being privileged?
  • I much prefer the range of exclusives on the 360, to the PS3.
  • @2 You're right. Off the top of my head the PS3 has resistance, killzone, uncharted and infamous. Good games in their own right but the xbox exclusives trumps them IMO. The only xbox exclusive i didn't enjoy was crackdown 1, didn't play the second one. Also, we have halo, so there.
  • @3 I agree, it isnt solely down to exclusives that I play the 360 instead of the PS3. I play because the quality of online service, the multimedia faclities and for the fact that I have come to love this machine. The few excellent exclusives we have are simply a considerable bonus.
  • @ Original you sir are to poor to afford a ps3 wat have better exsclusives . apart from alan wake bext 360 game
  • #8 can't tell if trolling or just stupid... I agree with #3, I don't want exclusives, I want games that I can play on every kind of platform.
  • Id honestly rather have the lbp series and modnation racers come to 360 than all their other exclusives. I'm happy w/ the shooters/action/michael bay explosion games we have now so adding more games that are really fun would intrest me more than another shooter would..
  • Let's face it, PS3 is a good console (good features/graphical components), but is nowhere near as innovational as Xbox 360. The xbox is likely to be the choice console for a gamer as supposed to a ps3. Despite the costly gold privelege for xbl, it's still worth it. And this is coming from someone who owns a pc, xbox, ps3, and a wii. Besides, how can you go wrong with a console that has exclusives like Gears of War and Halo? Sure LBP is good, but it's kind of a juvenile game. I LIKE MY BLOODY GORE.
  • All I have to say is... Moo.
  • "Microsoft has attempted to talk down worries about the lack of core exclusives for the Xbox 360" Who is worried exactly,i think that xbox exclusives are much better than other platforms.
  • @3 I didn't buy a 360 for the exclusives, same with PS3. So it doesn't matter if it makes you happy with only a game on 360 or PS3. Exclusives could include: games, addons (time release possibly), themes and other shit. @2 I don't even play those ps3 exclusives, unless they are good. @1 Who the hell has time to play 20 games anyway?
  • He makes a good point, then again I've never complained about Xbox360 exclusives. BUT BUT BUT, why did he mention Too Human in the same line as Alan Wake? Too Human was 10 years in the making and was a massive disappointment (IMHO).
  • @5 Heavy Rain God of War Series Little Big Planet Series Infamous Series Killzone Series Resistance Series Uncharted Series Ico/Shadows of the Colossus Prince of Persia HD Collection Splinter Cell HD Collection I'd say that exclusives on the Xbox 360 sadly aren't on the same level anymore as compared to the PS3. We have what left exactly? Halo Series Gears Series Fable Series "Kinect" Games Hell, we couldn't even hold on to Bioshock, Mass Effect and Saints Row for crying out loud! Not trying to get flamed/thumb down, but how can anyone say that exclusives don't help a company stand out/aren't important?
  • I actually hate exclusives, because it limits the audience. Publishing a game on all Platforms means more sells, which is more money, which means more budget for the next game, which equals a better game (actually thats not the case in some franchises). Its like hollywood shows the new Batman Movie exclusive in America - the fuck?
  • @ My thoughts exactly, LBP (1+2) is the only reason I bought a ps3 and pretty much the only reason I still play on it. Mod Nation is better than any 30 kart game aswell. The ps3 is streets ahead of the 360 for the inclusion of user created content, aside from that the 360 wins every other category that interests me. Exclusives mean nothing to me, I just want to see quality games on the 360, I dont give a fuck who makes them or whether gamers with rival consoles get to play them
  • oops @10, sorry
  • Halo, Gears, Kinect, Fable, Crackdown, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell Mass Effect (1), Forza, Left 4 Dead, Banjo- Kazooie, Lost Odyssey, Viva Pinata. Yes, not all new, and a couple may disagree with Viva and Banjo, but they're all great games. Who needs God of War when we can enjoy Bayonetta and Dante's Inferno? Who needs Resistance and Killzone when we have the superior Gears and Halo? Who needs Infamous when we can play Prototype? We'll get our MGS fix with the HD Collection and Revengeance....which leaves only Uncharted and LBP as the only games I'd like to see on xbox. Both consoles share many great games, possess many brilliant ones which are exclusive, but neither console is exactly lacking in quality of games, so there's no problem :)
  • @16 The PS3 might have nore exclusives but I bet you that not even half of them sold as well as those xbox exclusives. The only games that are on that list that I like are Uncharted and LBP.
  • What the hell is "sweat equity"?
  • Ico/Shadows of the Colossus...that alone justifies to buy a PS3.
  • I could care less about actual exclusive games. I have all three consoles anyways, what I want to see is some of the developers like naughty dog branch out and start doing multiplatform stuff. Insomniac already is. Maybe sucker punch next?
  • @17 I agree with you, sort of. Your right in the fact that if you limit yourself to one system you just limited yourself on sales. The quality aspect is not really true, I loved the first fable but after that I couldn't stand to play 2 and didn't even bother with 3. I own both 360 and PS3 but I only buy 2 exclusives for the ps3 and play 97% of the time on the Xbox. The PS3 is a good Bluray player and that is pretty much the greatest use I get out of it. Too bad HDDVDs didn't hit big for Microsoft. Although they could have kept the format for their games and reduced the amount of disks we get in some games.
  • I think it's a shame Xbox has so few exclusives. They even lost Mass Effect. If Microsoft keeps heading in the direction they are heading then the Xbox 360 will be my last Microsoft console.
  • @25 Well, Sir - you just described myself. I too own both systems - i just own a few exclusives for the PS3 and thats it. Most of the time i play on the Xbox.
  • How did I know this was going to turn into a console war?! Both respective consoles have great exclusives. Let's leave it at that. We can go back in forth in which console has the better one (exclusives), but let's be honest....we'll be spinning in circles here trying to argue. Besides who freakin' cares!! There's certain games I'll buy on 360 and certain ones I'll buy for the PS3. I have all 3 systems and I'm not bias to just one.
  • Lol.. I understand that "Quality over Quantity" approach.. but no one is asking you to put out 10 exclusives a year like Sony did in 2011 (all great games i might add.. Love Sony) Just put out like 4 or so.. And NO! WE DO NOT WANT, Halo, Halo, Halo, and Gears 4 and Five next year.. Outta all of Microsoft's exclusive titles.. the only 2 i really still care about are Alan Wake and Forza 4.. and Alan Wake is done by a third party studio lol.. Nearly all of Sony games are done by exclusive first party studios.. Im hoping for some good from Halo 4.. but im not expecting much anymore.. How about some new IPs MS!.. Mix in your old IPs with a few new titles this year!! Look at Naughty Dog and Sony, They got there best sales numbers with Uncharted 3 last year.. And look what Naughty Dog is doing now.. Making a New Exclusive IP "The Last of Us".. Not saying they are done with Uncharted or that they should be (AMAZING SERIES) but they are leaving a Established title that can make money on already, to work on a New IP.. (even though they did split the team into 2 groups to do so..) Come on MS just try.. and @24.. Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch are Owned by Sony.. they aren't going anywhere =] Insomniac is not owned by Sony, they just preferred working with the Sony Consoles until recently
  • Its also worth mentioning that 7 of the 20 games currently in the xbox chart are published by Microsoft. I have both consoles and if someone held a gun to me head and said 'Pick between the xbox or PS3 and gimme your sandwich' I would give him my PS3 and a mean PB & J. Its all personal preferences, each to their own n all that.
  • As much as i prefer the 360 to my PS3, to say the 360 has equal or the same quality as PS3 is just delusional. Besides my fave game series of all time: Halo, and one of the best gaming series ive played in years, Gears of War series, there isnt much else. Fable just doesnt deliver, im sorry but it doesnt for me, promises stacked on promises, and when its released it always falls short, Fable 1 was and still is the best. Alan Wake, yea i liked it, i really liked it, but it was 1 game, and the next is an XBLA title, not exactly a massive franchise there. Left 4 Dead series, ok its out on PC, but were talking console exclusives here, and i can only say i love these games. But tbh thats about it, there are other exclusive on 360 but majority of em are just crap, and Kinect is the biggest pile of crap ive ever played, it offeres nothing to gamers, and theres only so much you can do without a controller with buttons. But if you take a look at the PS3, i can name loads of exclusives that are just AAA and blow a lot of 360 stuff out the water. Uncharted: Easily 3 of the best looking, most entertaining and most enjoyable games ive ever played. Killzone: These are 2 awesome games but very hard to get used to so i can undertsnad why people are put off them, control system comes to mind. Infamous: nothing touches them on 360 in its genre, sorry but its true. Metal Gear: Nuff said! Then theres the other ones like, God Of War 3, Ico/Shadow of the Colossus, Socom, Heavy Rain. As a 360 owner, im very worried at the lack of exclusives, and it still annoys me that at every E3 event its the same thing. New Gears, New Halo, New Fable, New Forza......Then tons of Kinect Crap!
  • I personally don't care for Sony as a brand. At this point though, they have some damn good exclusives. While those titles still haven't enticed me enough to buy a PS3, Microsoft is fooling itself now with it's lack of core exclusives. I love Gears & Halo, but you can only play them for so long. The thing that continues to puzzle me is that MS owns freaking RARE, who once upon a time was a major powerhouse for Nintendo. Why don't they have them continuing with their strong franchises and making new core IPs instead of avatar & Kinect games?
  • Fable is pretty much dead , Halo isnt that great , only gears seem to stay strong and gears 3 was the last one . MS need a new batch of exclusives.Stop being blind, the community knows the lack of MS exclusives , why do you think MS feel the need to calm down people. If there's nothing new I'm gonna switch to ps next generation.
  • I agree with quality not quantity, but would like exclusives if not exclusive content
  • To be fair, I was thinking about this before when trying to defend 360 exclusives. If you don't like shooters, you're kind of not going to enjoy a lot of what 360 exclusives have to offer. That being said, I like the achievement system over the trophy system so far. Also, PS3 is a bit more attractive looking with free online over the sixty a year for xbox. I don't think PSN multiplayer is as good as xbox's or anything, but the consoles are a bit more even than you may think at first glance. The PS3 is actually a bit better for casual gamers looking to get a current gen console. It's a good point in the article that it's quality over quantity. I like that stance quite a bit, especially when it holds up when you look at the games. That said, more diversity wouldn't be a bad thing.
  • Call of Duty is pretty much exclusive,i mean you get content first, there's more people, and the connection to the millions of people is actually playable.
  • The people that care about exclusives are smug are too smug to realize that having a game on another console isn't going to impact the success of your own console. Is Microsoft lacking sales and success because it doesn't have Resistance? Hardly. I own the Uncharted games and they're not as perfect as people say. Try to rotate Drake while you're aiming down the sights and it takes 11 seconds to fully turn around. Ressistance and Killzone also have shoddy controls. Maybe they look good, sure, but the gameplay isn't "end all be all." Keep in mind you're playing these games on the little-Asian-girl controller and you'll quickly understand the frustrations with a Ps3. I think we're doing alright. Like someonee said early in the thread, I'm just asking for more games to play in general. I'm more concerned with new IPs in general, not the chance they may be exclusive.
  • That's the one argument I've never understood. "PS3 has more exclusives than the 360!!". Umm... I'd rather play the 360 ones, so who cares? Not saying the PS3 ones are bad, but the whole "quality over quantity" thing fits well here.
  • #32 gets it perfect. Also a lot of people say they don't care about exclusives but to the ones who have just the one console, why did you pick the 360 if not for the exclusives? Also do we really want to end up like nintendo, who release 5 or so games a year with mario? If people prefer the multi-platform stuff then shouldn't services like on-live be doing a hell of alot better.
  • @16 You know someones struggling to name exclusives when they start putting HD collections down. God of War although graphically epic, if you strip away all the fancy visuals its still 'press x 1000000000 times to win' Killzone is again lovely to look at but is very linear and has the worst set of enemy voices i ever heard. Who knew everyone on Helgan originated from east london? Metal Gear 5 was basically a movie, IMO you can pick a lot more holes in Ps3 exclusives than you can the 360's
  • @33 From what I heard, there is actually going to be a Gears 4, Epic gave the reigns to People Can Fly (the guys that did the Painkiller series and more recently Bulletstorm) for it. But yeah I totally agree with you. It's even worse to say "Hey guys, trust us, it's better quality!" when the exclusives that we had this year were just meh compared to PS3's stacked line up last year, besides Gears 3, and although I haven't personally tried it, Forza 4 is suppose to be fantastic (I'm too much of a GT fan to drop it after 3 mediocre Forzas though XD) @35 I hate to say it, but after recently getting the PS3, I feel the Xbox has gotten more casual...yes, people keep talking about the main exclusives that have come to the PS3, but there are A LOT of hidden gems on it that are exclusive to the console, and there is a huge advantage to the hardcore crowd when you can pick up imports easier. And I REALLY wish it was quality over quantity, but comparing games, there isn't much of a challenge, at least compared to PS3's line up in 2009 and 2011. Especially since our lineup last year was a joke...ANOTHER Forza? ANOTHER Halo (a 'remake' on top of that...)? At least Gears of War proved to be able to carry the console again, but seriously, the exclusives we have right now are slowly drying out. And a problem also stems from the fact Xbox is nothing but a shooter console...there's been little to no variety lately. Microsoft is really missing out on some good opportunities, especially since they have Rare on their side...who they then just throw into developing for the Kinect. I guess we'll see in 2014 assuming that's when the next console wars start...but for now, I'm standing with the PS4.
  • The PS3 exclusives aren't all that anyway. Uncharted's a crappy, overhyped, less fun Tomb Raider, Infamous is good but hardly a masterpiece, and Heavy Rain isn't even a game (non-stop QTEs? Really?). God of War and Ratchet and Clank are awesome though, even if Kratos is one of the least appealing lead characters I've encountered to date.
  • Halo and Kinect suck balls id rather have Uncharted
  • @16 I cant take you seriously when you miss exclusives like forza and alan wake from the xbox list and apart from ico/shadows (ps2 games) all the hd collections are individually available on the xbox. I will admit id love to have the uncharted games ,but killzone/resistance dont even come close to halo /gears. Also, how many of the games on the ps list you gave would you consider AAA, 1 ,maybe 2 at a push.
  • I'm sorry but they need to calm us down, instead of paying out a stupid amount of price for a month's exclusive before PS3 on the CoD/Skyrim DLC they should be using their money more wisely..
  • Why is it that this happens almost everytime a topic like this comes up? 360 is better, no ps3 is better, or in rare cases...wii is better! who cares?! come on y'all, we all have our preferences to the console we like and the games we play. what might be good to one gamer may not be as good to another. case in point, any CoD game. a shit ton of people i know say it's the best game they've ever played...i honestly don't care for the series. to me it's based off, for the most part, real historical battles so why would i play something to which i already know what the final outcome is? that and i have two young sons that usually watch what i am playing and i don't want them to think that shooting another human being is an ok thing to do. Halo on the other hand, i really don't care if they watch me play it...find me someone that looks like an elite, or brute, or hell a grunt even. But before i ramble off into the unknown, back on topic. Why don't we as gamers just appreciate that which we have and play what we like. If you're into halo, play it. God of War, play it. pick your game and console and be happy.
  • Right I am talking with you M$, now you realise it for longer time!!! Just force on IPs and Franchises with pad not Kinect. Here is what M$ need to bring new Exclusive IPs and bring back from Original Xbox's exclusive titles: Bring back Conker and Banjo-Kazooie into real platformer like N64 era and Conker on original Xbox. You must made RARE do this instead of Kinect titles. Already Halo this year, that fine but still need more exclusive titles joins. New exclusive IP titles. Blinx 3 Amped 3 Blood Wake 2 Brute Force 2 (Hell, M$ you promise to bring back Brute Force for 2nd series on Original Xbox but nothing happened??!! So you need this on Xbox 360 or even Xbox 720!!) Crimson Skies 2 Grabbed by the Ghoulies 2 (Please for sake first series is really good so please ask RARE to making 2nd series) Kakuto Chojin 2 (maybe I knew poor medicore title on Original Xbox but bring it back into improvement with new developer take over this series?) Kung Fu Chaos 2 (funny cartoon fighing on original xbox and recieved some well postive above then 60% from websites) MechAssault 3 Midtown Madness 4 NightCaster 2 (Being cancelled or just rumour about 2nd series on Original Xbox so this need made comeback on this generation or 720) Phantom Dust 2 Project Gotham Racing 5 Quantum Redshift 2 Rallisport Challenge 3 Sneakers (Being cancelled on Original Xbox for releases so should bring it back and re-release) Voodoo Vince 2 That is M$ need them instead of Kinect titles!!!
  • We have Halo and Gears? Why is anyone concerned? Oh and the original xbox had Fable....... Too bad that game just gets worse with every release
  • Feels good to play multi-platforms. I get to enjoy all the exclusives! Strongly recommend you all purchase a PS3 and possibly a Wii U though I can't say anything about that.
  • @46 One of the most intelligent and unbiased post here. Let's just enjoy our games on all platforms to whatever your preferences are. Seriously! Flame wars are redundant!
  • Quality? Tell me why most of the kinect games suck big time? I'm still waiting for better game to play with my kinect..
  • @39 Mainly to play with friends n family members who already had an xbox before me. And also when I did have the ps3 I ended up just using it for its bbc iplayer The only thing that would cause me to get a ps3 again would be a growth of RPG exclusive on that console and a lack of RPG's on the xbox (and not fable / borderlands style) I'm talking Final Fantasy, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Last Remnant.
  • While we may not have a ton of exclusives, it doesn't feel like the PS3 is doing much better. If anything, PC is the platform with the most desirable "exclusives."
  • @16 Both PoP and Splinter Cell have been available on 360 for longer thanks to backwards compatibility, while i'd consider Ico/Shadow to be more of a reason to buy a PS2, not a PS3. I love the games, but the quality of Sony's "HD Collections" are usually pretty poor. Most of the other exclusives are easily countered by games available on both platforms that offer a similar experience, such as Indigo Prophecy / Fahrenheit, Dante's Inferno and the upcoming Tomb Raider game. Likewise, Xbox may have lost exclusivity on Bioshock, Mass Effect and Saints Row... But Playstation lost exclusivity on titles like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and Devil May Cry. Neither console really succeeds in providing exclusive games that aren't just like a dozen other games in the genre.
  • I definitely prefer the quality of the PS3 exclusives way more. They aren't some of my favorite games, but a lot of the 360 exclusives are complete duds. While Halo is one of my favorite franchises, Gears of War and Forza just turn me off completely. The best exclusives the 360 has are the Arcade Shmups. Love those!
  • Give MS some credit, they do get all of the CoD map packs first (usually by a few months) although i am not a CoD player i can see how this would entice gamers. TBH i buy the hyped up PS3 exclusives when they are £20 or under, they just don't do it for me. The only games i play on PS3 are the exclusives and fighting games simply because of the D pad.
  • I'm not too concerned about a title being exclusive as long as it is a good play and the PS3 version isn't markedly better in some way. I still don't regret not owning a PS3.
  • Kinda agree with #16, I've been a little worried at 360's lack of exclusives, its almost like they've given up on making them. Losing Bungie to Activision and Bioware making their games multi platform was real blows. The Crytek partnership is something that could be phenominal their cryengine is without a question the best looking of any game engine to date. And at least we've got the mighty Halo back this year with 4.
  • It's not like a lack of coming exclusives will make my existing library disappear. Personally, the existing exclusives would be enough for me to still pick an Xbox over a Playstation, but I'm glad that people on both HD consoles are able to have a lot of good games available to them.
  • "Quality not quantity" is a poor excuse to be honest. The next time when Xbox is up and running again, the phrase will be "Our exclusivity library is great." The truth is, PS3 is doing better at the moment.
  • bring back Oddworld.
  • @29 I know they're owned by Sony and it's just a pipe dream but bungie was owned by Microsoft until recently. I mean what dev wouldn't want as many people as possible to play their games?
  • Reach sucks, Gears sucks. And COD sucks.
  • I wish cod took quality not How many shite games wee can bring out in 1 year. I also wish cod would be a ps3 exclusive cause it seems right, the shitist game with the shitist console makes sence.
  • Microsoft is too busy trying to steal the Wii audience and pumping out non-gaming features for the Xbox, its like they have decided to do everything they can to convince us Gold Membership is worth the price tag, rather then remind us the Xbox360 is actually a gaming console.
  • @64 Then Halo should be Wii exclusive and keep gears on xbox
  • @63 Please don't troll. All of them are fantastic games. 2 of them being the hottest Xbox exclusives!
  • the only PS3 game i would be interested in you be resistance and killzone...other then that i am happy that xbox ONLY has Gears and Halo...those two alone by far have dominated the gaming world in the past 10 years...just look at the numbers if you think i am lying
  • @16 I dont think you can list Resistance as a + because its shit. There is plenty of others ones you failed to mention on 360: Alan Wake (series hopefully) Crackdown series Left 4 Dead series Splinter Cell Conviction I got my 360 for Gears of War 1. I was gonna get a PS3 until they lost the exclusives of GTA4 and RE5 back in the day. I'm not too bothered about exclusives really, but couldn't be without Gears of War and Halo.
  • On the one hand, PS3 has a load of exclusives nobody cares about. (Generalising.) On the other, more exclusives would be nice. Well, retail exclusives. Got LOADS on XBLA but nobody (as in the wider gaming community) cares or even KNOWS about them.
  • Uhm, maybe it's a benefit for us actually buying the 360?
  • I won't buy into all the console war dick-waving, But I'd like to see some new IP's out of MS. Halo, Gears and Forza have all been quality series, but let's face it, they are getting on in age. Halo will have title 8 this year, and Forza and Gears have passed 4 and 3. Bah. So long as they don't fall into the yearly spew release cycle I'll be happy.
  • If Halo:Reach is considered quality, then that word means nothing anymore.
  • xbox may technically have fewer exclusives, but if you're a shooter fan, their exclusives are the only ones that matter. ps3 does a lot of things well but not shooters. resistance and killzone are not comparable to the far superior halo and gears of war.
  • I'm a fan of both consoles so I'm not gonna sit here and defend a certain one but the truth is Sony has done a better job with the exclusives, they are clearly leading in that department. That's all that's really to it.
  • With Activision picking up Bungie recently, that means curtains for Halo being a Microsoft exclusive. (as you know 343 IS a part of Bungie) This will truly mean the death of the Xbox if they don't pick up some other exclusives, or blow us all out of the water with the next gen Xbox (not giving it a name until it is unveiled with a name). Gears and Forza will NOT carry the Xbox brand without Halo. Microsoft went soft on us and went to the casual approach, and we see where it is getting them. Proof that they don't really care about the hardcore gamer, only about the money to be made from the rest of the world.
  • Uncharted is the only ps3 exclusive i want on the xbox, but we got a wii + ps3 in the living room so if i wanted i could play it whenever
  • @63 Says the guy with Captain Price as his gamertag...
  • I'm all for the quality over quantity idea every day of the week. HOWEVER, as big a fan as I am to the Halo series, I'd of rather seen new material than remakes and remasters of old material. Microsoft has the capability and the potential to create those games no matter how rare or common that will blow us all away and they aren't using this ability to it's full potential in my opinion. A new series ALONG with additional games to existing series would be nice. Anyways, those are just my thoughts...
  • @72: Just because their game X in the series/collection of games doesn't mean they're bad. Just take a look at any of the Mario, Kirby, Metroid, etc. games. Are they bad because they have different games out? I don't think so. Anyway, exclusives are becoming less and less important to companies today. Just look at Mass Effect, FF, Bioshock, Eternal Sonata that were once exclusives but are now multi-platform. Companies want money and if they think they can get it by going on a new platform they will. Of course Nintendo is the exception to this but you get my point. Oh, and by the way, there are plenty of exclusives on the Xbox you just need to look for them. Obviously not popular AAA titles but still fun.
  • Who the f*ck cares? I have both a 360 and a PS3.
  • @80.. Umm.. Yea because there is no reason for third party studios to be developing games for one console.. unless your being paid off to do.. Crytek and RYSE.. Epic and Gears.. Remedy and Alan Wake.. Those are all third party studios not owned by MS making games for Xbox and PC only.. They are paid off and MS more than likely owns the actual IP or bought it off them. any other developer/publisher who only wanted to develop for 1 console is a moron and gonna be missing half the profits they could potentially make First Party studios like Turn 10 are owned by MS.. therefore they cannot release games on multiple consoles.. Naughty Dog is owned by Sony so the same can be said for them..
  • @81 *golf clap* so you want a metal now? Not everyone is cool as you and has both. Anyway.. Microsoft used to brag about all their exclusives. Funny how they back track now and go with the whole quality over quantity theory.
  • I just wish they would stop releasing the same old garbage kinect games over and over again. Kinect is a cool feature but not every game should use.
  • Also I agree with the quality not quantity thing but still MS should be able to release more then 4 exclusives a year
  • Personally I really don't care about xbox 360 or ps3 exclusives. I my opinion there shouldn't be any exclusives, why should I have a console from sony or microsoft if I want to play a certain game? The only reason why the do it is to force people to bye there console (or both of them). So what do you get? Many people who have got both consoles, on one of them the play there games and the other one is just to play the exclusives the can't get for there first one. in the future i would ratherly see more release date exclusives. There are a few games I would have loved to play like: Killzone & Resistance, but i'm not going to bye a PS3 just to play them. So to could ahve sold more of those titles if it wasn't a PS3 exclusive game.
  • The good thing about exclusives is the developers have increased ability to push the limits of the console.
  • Aren't most of the PS3's exclusives driving games?
  • Just reading the title of this "news" article calls for flame bait and a flock of fanboys. You can't argue with a brick wall.
  • Give me Gears Of War and I'm happy! I have not liked any playstation exclusives yet.
  • Everyone is missing out twisted metal.
  • I love how people keep mentioning inFamous and ModNation Racers. Those two awful games are exactly the kind of thing this guy was talking about when he said quality over quantity. Not that 360 doesn't have less than awesome exclusives, but if you're trying to make a point about all the ones PS3 has, leave shitty ones that nobody wants to play out of it because they aren't helping your case much. I mean damn, why not mention Haze while you're at it too?
  • Kinect is shit, its fun sometimes but i bought my xbox for core games and core exclusives. They need to remember who gives a live to this platform, its core gamers who prefer a real games not kinect casual stuff!
  • @73 Hmmm, I guess not then since you personally decreed it so, oh fabled speaker for the masses (and speaker for the dictionary too it seems) ;)
  • i have always wondered why the Splinter Cell HD collection has never been released on the 360? Obviously it had exclusive rights to the PS3 but its old now. Its strange how a game series which started as an xbox exclusive ends up with a collection exclusively on another console. As for exlusives i dont really mind as we get DMC and FF on the box but id love to play Uncharted and the last God of War plus the Ico and SoTC HD collection :D
  • This is my first posting to a news article. I've always wondered why exclusives are so important in a consoles late years. Here is the way I see it. There are 2 kinds of people involved - ones who already have an Xbox 360 and ones that don't and are looking to get one. 1) Current owners. If you are a current owner, then the limited selection of exclusives on the horizon should not matter. There are way to many other games coming out or just came out to play with. So, in addition to Halo 4, there are all the multi-platform games that would fit whatever type of game you like. Really, how many games can people afford? or have time to play. My point is that if you are a current owner, multi-platform games should fill the void. 2) If you are a new owner, exclusives are definitely a factor but then again, to a new user - Gears of War 1 is new, Crackdown is new, Alan Wake is new, etc. Xbox has had plenty of exclusives since its beginning and those are available at a cheap price to someone who just got their system. Regarding the Kinect? While there is certainly a fair amount of garbage, there are some excellent games on it. I can mention Gunstringer as one exclusive that is "hardcore-ish" which is where people here seem to be on the side of. There are other good Kinect only games depending on your taste. Anyway, just my first opinion. Thanks.
  • Didnt realise the amount of ps3 exclusives there are...I think it does kinda give them one up on 360 personally i think halo and gears series alone beats all the ps3 exclusives anyway so i do agree quality not quantity, but they defo need something fresh soon, and im sorry but kinect just isnt goin to be good enough imo.
  • I actually do appreciate exclusive titles. I'm actually having trouble finding what exactly it is about exclusives that are so appealing to me--perhaps they are a continuous validation that I made the right choice in gaming system, since I can only afford, and have space, to keep up with one. And I'm not gonna lie, games like Uncharted, inFamous, Heavy Rain, God of War, Heavenly Sword, and the forthcoming Agent look pretty great... Halo, for me, has been played out. Alan Wake is one of my favorite video games but its limited success may hinder its future. Fable looks interesting, but I've never purchased any titles. Gears is the best series on the 360, but its core trilogy just ended. Ryse, I think, looks amazing, but I don't have a Kinect.
  • @76 - 343 are owned by MS, not Bungie. Also, Microsoft OWN the Halo IP.
  • Playstation has always had the better core exclusive list. Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted [HOLY FUCK YES], God of War, Heavy Rain, LOCO-[FREAKIN]-ROCO, Patapon, MAG [Ambitious, but didn't set the world alight, wish the 360 was more ambitious], Gran turismo, the Last Guardian, Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear Solid 1-4, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter. MS Respond with Halo [which was brilliant up until Halo 3], Gears of War, Crackdown, Fable, Alan Wake, PGR [now seemingly defunct] and Forza. Now they're going all out with arcade games and Kinect [which I don't give a shit about]. Screw you Microsoft, the last exclusive to genuinely blow my mind was Halo 3, which was over 4 years ago. Get it together. Sony got their exclusive shit on lockdown. the only reason I keep this console is for party chat and achievements, probably same story for most people.
  • ~including Halo 3, meaning Halo 3 was the last exceptional Halo game~
  • ~add twisted metal and Syphon Filter to Sony's list~
  • PS3 has Quality and Quantity so it can be done Microsoft. Can't use that as an excuse.
  • @102 Don't forget about Sony's new exclusive The Last of Us, plus Starhawk and the soon to release Twisted Metal. This guys a tool, of course he says something like that. If he would have said "we are aware of this and we are working on correcting it", I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, but not anymore. It's funny he mentions quality over quantity for core titles yet they are pumping out Kinect games left and right, and most of those have reviewed really bad and are of low quality. He needs to go and someone who actually cares about the core gamers needs to take his place. Sony doesn't have a problem putting out exclusives that are high quality games.
  • @102 and all those exclusives you just named are terrible I own most of those and cant' stand them God of War is terrible same thing over and over only solid one is uncharted and the new one was bad compared to 2 so they both are down hill. And Twisted metal remake looks bad. Killzone are all terrible, Resistance is good but 2 and 3 terrible.
  • All people talking bought PS at least are network stays running strong and solid and has party chats over other games and many other things. And if u want the good online with PS u pay so don't say it's free
  • Funny, I was just readin same interview on my lunch break. Well,Sony has no problems releasing 10 exclusives that score over 90 in one year, so at least I'm happy with quality combined with quantity. Why don't they call it what it is? Kinect makes us more money and sells better, because of easier accesibillity, so we will keep focusing on that? No need to sugar coait, we're all grown ups here ( I hope, LOL)
  • Im glad that people are starting to realize that we dont have that many exclusives on xbox that can appeal to many people and not just the damn shooter fans.(which will probably cause lots of people to head back to Sony like i did for the moment). someone said "dont worry we have halo and gears"... lol how many more of those games do they have to keep churning out ad nauseaum.. before you people get sick of them? ive been past sick of those 2 games including call of duty.(yes i know its not an exclusive. but we wont see anything better on xbox because the sheep keep buying those same 2 games(halo, gears) whenever they release leaving no opportunity for new IP's.(i honestly dont know why i feel this way, its just a feeling i can't shake.) if people tell Microsoft to get their shit together or they'll switch over, maybe that will get their asses in gear. Try something different Microsoft, im growing tired and bored of your exclusives. (including the kinect garbage) Microsoft has so much money... it just doesn't make any sense to me why we dont have anymore exclusives then that. The only exclusive i love is Alan Wake!!!!! lol who knows they might loose that one too, like everything else making the 360 more and more obsolete sigh :(. I still love my xbox, but i cant just sit here and pretend everything is all good in the exclusives department.
  • @#107 I don't even know why do you keep buying PS3 games if that is your opinion (weirdest as it is) on most of their games... Is it because you have nothing better to do with you money? I envy you then, I greatly enjoyed every game I buy for both systems (try a demo first if available or check vids online to see if I like it, not like I need to most of the time). Either you have your bar set so high no game can reach it or you just don't know how to enojy video games. I would look for another hobby...
  • I beg to differ with #105. Microsoft is right. Sony only has quantity.
  • Every time I hear about this so called lack of exclusives to the PS3 I just laugh because Multiplats make up 90% of the games we all play whether we see that or not. Then when you consider the fact that 90% of multiplats are superior on the 360 and run better over XBL (yes this is my personal experience from 2008 all the way up to the present day), this argument cancels itself out. I've owned both a PS3 and 360 since launch and I know all about the pros and cons of each console. I still rent multiplats on both systems to this very day just to compare and prove Lens Of Truth correct nearly 98% of the time. Lets just say, that while the problem has improved slightly, its still there. Multiplats generally look like shit, and perform like shit over the atrocious PSN when compared to their 360 versions and over XBL. I'm sorry but this is a fact that I will stand by, as evidenced through my own experience and every gamer I know. The only reason I even still keep my ps3 is for 4 franchises I can count on one hand and I assure you, any First Party Sony FPS is NULL AND VOID TO ME because I refuse to use that backward and archaic 16 year old controller for first person shooters. And to be honest, I'm backed up on nearly a dozen older retail games that need to be finished before the next gen arrives along with over 100 XBLA titles I bought and need to finish. This is whole Exclusive debate the delusional PS3 fanboys bring in IRRELEVANT to me and my world. Again, who gives a shit, when 90% of what we play are Multiplats and 90% of those multiplats, we the xbox 360 owners get are the SUPERIOR VERSIONS ANYHOW.
  • Quality over quantity my arse, there's no excuse not to have both.
  • @16 i agree & would like to add these PS3 arcarde titles. dragons lair 1 & 2, space ace, extra. MS is falling way behind. need better kinect games like rise of nightmares too. seems i'm buying more PS3 games than 360 & kinect combined.
  • To those who say no big deal to lack of exclusives: I think some of you may be missing the point. Exclusive titles aren't just for the people who already own a system, they're about bringing in new buyers for the platform ie I bought my Dreamcast for Shenmue, my Xbox (original) for Halo, my 360 for a continuation of PGR/Halo franchises and a Ps3 for a continuation of the Yakuza and (most likely) Persona franchises. Whilst it's true that most of what we play is multi-platform, thats not what sells a system to many. The companies need something they can point to and say "look what we have over here, the grass is greener on our side."
  • Halo and Gears make about as much of an impact on me as Call of Duty. Shooters have been milked pretty fucking dry, and now that we've lost Mass Effect, the only strong exclusive I see in the entire 360 library is Alan Wake. Microsoft hasn't done shit in the exclusive department for YEARS now, while Sony has bought out Heavy Rain, LPB, Demon's Souls, and sequels to Uncharted, Killzone, and Resistance, not to mention The Last of Us, Starhawk, and Twisted Metal on the horizon. Where's our AAA exclusive? All we're getting next year is an XBLA Alan Wake, the 4th Halo in as many years (remind you of another over-milked generic shooter?), and a fucking Kinect version of Fable. And If anyone would wonder why I care so much, it's because I chose a 360 over a PS3 and I feel like all I've gotten for it is a $60/year payment for a dashboard that has gotten so much worse over the years it boggles the mind.
  • @114 Agreed. Quality over quantity only matters if it's the same developer, and it means they're not putting enough time into making the game/making improvements. When you've got quite a wide range of developers out there, there's no reason they can't all be producing games of substantial quality. Problem is half of Microsoft's devs are currently completely focused on kinect games. Lionhead, for instance. Are they doing ANYTHING ELSE, apart from Fable: the journey? Because I've heard naff all about anything if there is.
  • Wow, they have changed their tune. Remember when we used to have Saints Row, Mass Effect, Dead Rising, Bioshock and more as exclusives that really helped the Xbox become the console to have this generation. Now they seem content to plow Kinect games down our throats, and get month exclusive DLC for Call of Duty every year. It might pull in some of the casual audience I'm sure, but they do risk alienating the core audience which made the 360 the success it has become.
  • I actually don't mind the small amount of exclusives that the 360 has; but I don't understand why Microsoft seems fine with it. I think that they should create new IPs instead of standing where they are now, thinking that it's alright because it's "quality over quantity." (That doesn't cut it, PS3 exclusives have quality and are numerous.)
  • Ryse actually looks like it could be pretty good for a Kinect title. Kinda keeping an eye on that game.
  • @16 The reason why BioShock 1 was not released on PS3 originally, was that 2K had stated they had no plans to release it for PS3, despite them releasing it for 360 & PC only at the time. Even now, they stated they will not be bringing the PS3 exclusive Challenge Rooms to 360 & PC.
  • I woudlent mind getting more exclusives..
  • Microsoft never should have sold Mass Effect to EA...that would have been the best Exclusive on any console...
  • @124 That's one game that I thought should have stayed on the 360, most certainly. Even while PS3 users may have the later titles, the first one is only on XBOX. You have to play the game to its entirety. That's the whole purpose of MASS EFFECT!
  • This guy is just making excuses...Quality and Impact???? PS3 puts out a quality exclusive's about twice a year and all M$ is doing is bleeding fucking Halo dry!! So that leaves the only 2 exclusive's i can think of Gears and Alan Wake, and Remedy is to scared to put out another retail Alan Wake because ppl stupid to see a great quality game over fucking MP. GOD I HATE WHAT GAMING HAS BECOME!!
  • Dead Rising ,DOA 4 ,Viva Pinata 1 and 2 and Metro 2033 . All quality games that it seems most people over look. Once upon a Monster and The Gunstringer are also exclusives, and there is also Shadow Complex. Once again all quality games. We should be able to enjoy a good game for any HD console, but sadly we can not.
  • As a hardcore gamer, I own all platforms. That being said. If a game is out on all platforms ill always get it on 360, but only because I'm an achievement whore. Exclusives make sense, the company obviously put money and effort into a gae and took a chance, if it fails it fails, but if it does good, then obviously its a win for them. Microsoft has its own developers and so does Sony . Sony probably had to pay a good amount to get some of xbox titles on its library and vice versa . Look at final fantasy. Imo I think Microsoft is to scared to start a new IP. Commercialy speaking they have prob had more titles not do so good as Sony. Now compared to the 7 ps3 games that I have compared to the 100 xbox games, all 7 of those are probably better. Heavy rain has no equal on xbox. Microsoft is to scared to do something like that. God of war series, yeah we can play dantes inferno and it is a great game, but nothing as memorable as Kratos. Infamous, F%*$ Prototype that game was terrible, infamous was way better, I got both on release date and as you can check on my gc I didn't even finish it Resistance and killzone are the answers to Halo and gears. Right here is where the go hand in hand the only difference is that microsofts cow is much more milked. Little big planet, again I feel that Microsoft would be to scared to try something like this. MGS5, yeah xbox got the hd remake and revengance. But if you don't have a ps3 you missed out on one of the most amazing movies, I mean game out there. Uncharted series, it has no equal on the xbox, well have to wait for the new tomb raider.
  • I like 360 because of its controller and because I don't like going through all the shitty 3rd party games that have come out on the PS since its original incarnation. I got the original xbox because it was the spiritual successor to the dreamcast, not because it had any games I knew about. Halo established my future interest and ensured my puchase of the 360 ( even though the 2 xbox titles have been better imo ).
  • some of you on here are loyal to the point of stupid? if you are going to pretend the PS3 does not beat 360 hands down exclusive wise your just a blind bunch of fanboys.
  • if consoles did not have exclusives we would not see great looking games like the last guardian, the new the last of us, Uncharted all look better than anything on my 360 just being honest the PS3 is a great machine. MS need to stop this kinect crap & get back to why we got the dam console to play games not adverts & crap & wave hands about like prats.
  • No games.
  • I really wish that there was a bigger variety, I mean, Not everyone loves halo and gears. I wish we had a good platforming exclusive or something.
  • queue many haters but, who in this day and age, actually gives a shit about exclusives from my knowledge of them, all they do is piss off everybody who doesn't have the console, and cause endless bickering between fanboys (oh, and make me spend £200 upwards for a game, console included - won't have to do that for a few years, i have PC, PS3 & X360 now - slightly annoyed with the PS3, only exclusive game i have is wipeout, others were shmups on PSN, which were released on steam 2 weeks after i bought the PS3 for them :/) i wouldn't care if there never was a single exclusive anymore, as long as it's on a format i own, i don't care fair enough sojme devs are better at working on certain formats, and i think they should stay on said format if that is the case, as while i exclusives cause more trouble than good, it's better than having shovelware everywhere anybody who says quality of games would slide, this isn't true, or shouldn't be, and if it is, then everybody who works in the industry should be fired. I.M.H.O. the quality of games went downhill since the 360 was released, since consoles have been able to recieve patches, the games have been forced out to more specific dates, which is not acceptable, Older PC dev's would always be on a "when it's done" timeframe - now, it has to be out for____ because we want a 2 week headstart on that other game...and that leads to either broken games, or just utter shit i myself have just moved back onto my PC, because i dislike modern shooters, and find the indie marketplace to be a bit pricey compared to steam (also, the last few indie games have been PC exclusives) and i prefer my FPS's with a mouse & keyboard and now i'm bored and forgot if i had a point or not, so i shall bugger off
  • GR4V1G0R3 then competition would die & 1 format can dictate how things cost quality would go down I hope we see games exclusive forever.
  • Again, I fail to understand the importantance of why so many of you think Exclusives sells systems. Popularity and brand recognition sells exclusives, having the same system as your friends sells systems. I didn't buy a Dreamcast back in 1999 because of any particular game. I bought it because It was simply a new console, and I always buy new consoles on day one. But rest asssured I'm very skeptical whether I even want to support the broken brand that the Playstation brand has become.. Little big planet- means nothing to me Any FPS shooter on PS3 - means nothing to me because of that archaic and horrible controller with analog sticks that offer little to no no resistance. Infamous - It's crackdown sorry.. Fat princess - its castle crashers.. sorry Heavy rain? - this isn't even a video game, I still cant figure out how anyone could say this is a good game Dark Souls - could care less about it. The only reason I keep my POS PS3 is due to Uncharted, Motorstorm, MGS, and God Of War. And if sony continutes to to give us shitty software and a horrible inconsistant network that is full of lag and problems, I will not be supporting the Playstation brand after this gen. The hour and a half long downloads and installations.. Thats right folks, after bringing home many games, I was forced to wait anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and half before I could even play the game! Download speeds that are nearly 8x slower than what my 360 can do over wifi over the atrocious PSN. Piss poor multiplats, poor user interface and intergration, Poor software design... definitely not a future proof system in the least bit. I swear I could write a 10 page essay of legitimate facts about the PS3 and things that Sony simply did wrong where MS got them right. Again, I fail to see the importance of exclusives... they just piss people off to no end. You people keep saying how great PS3 exclusives are, but beyond the 4 franchises I mentioned that interest me, I don't see it, especially having played them all for ample time. I can think of 4 times the number of superior multiplats I'd rather play on 360 than I can get a hard on for any of these so called better quality exclusives on the PS3. And one final note... Any game that isn't first party and that doesn't run on sony's dedicated servers is a huge gamble. Nearly every multiplat I ever played on both consoles performed and looked better over on 360 and over Live. Anyone that stays differently can debate with me to their little hearts content over the mic and to no avail. Do I recognize the lack of exclusives? Yes and no... because most of Playstation 3's exclusives I could give 2 cents about. 3rd party developers are what makes or breaks a system... this proves true all the way back to the NES.. which was the Playstation of it's day. 3rd party support is everything, exclusivity is nothing more than the 10 year old in the sandbox steping on your sand castles and saying, "na, na, na, na, na, na, Look at me and what I got!"
  • Infamous - It's crackdown sorry.. is that a joke? you do not care about them because your a MS fanboy look at your comment above if you had played it you would see how dumb that sounds so reading any more is pointless im out.
  • See I realy don't care if people on the Xbox get 10 or 100 "EXCLUSIVE" games because realy I only want to play the good ones
  • I own both & both have great things about them but I use my PS3 a lot more. the 360 has peaked imo what bugs me about peps on this site is they say there rubbish when if you were being honest you would at the least respect there good games, so it is hard to take any of you serous sound like fanboys big time! read what Delow317 said he is talking pure crap sad thing is a lot of you on here agree with him MS drones.
  • @everybody that says that they have all 3 consoles and says that they don't care about exclusives. You have to be some of the dumbest people on the planet. If you don't care about exclusives,
  • awesome. didn't get to finish.
  • See this is exactly why Microsoft is able to get away with what they're doing, drones accepting their poor support. Off the top of my head PS3 Twisted Metal Last of Us Starhawk Killzone Infamous Uncharted Heavy Rain Little Big Planet Sony All Stars The Last Guardian Demon Souls God of war Resistance MGS4 GT5 & These are all games varying in different genres. In the span of a year Sony has released both Twisted Metal & Starhawk and announced 4 new IP's Last of Us, Sony All stars and two more to be announced. Microsoft has not done this once. Sony has completely eclipsed and outnumbered 360's exclusives in the span of a few years. Its very telling when i can't name 5 360 exclusives without naming some old title like Kameo or naming Kinect & Arcade titles. Look at the 2012 line up its Almost ALL arcade titles and some unnannounced crap. Note: Alan Wake & Left 4 Dead are not exclusives. Learn the definition of exclusive it means you can find the games nowhere else and you can ON PC. PC is a platform. So stop using them in arguements. Secondly stop saying 360 games sell more. GT5 sold more than Gears of war 3, 2, & 1. Not every 360 game sells like Halo infact most of them failed to even reach a million. Kameo, Perfect dark Zero, Saints Row, Dead Rising, Alan Wake didn't even come close to Halo's sales. Most non shooters fail on the 360. Microsoft completely and utterly dropped the ball when it comes to exclusives. 360 is my preffered console, but to deny they have been crappy with exclusives is complete and total fanboyism.
