Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Vid Looks at the Art Design

EA has released another Inside Reckoning vid, detailing the art design and touching on the lore of the upcoming RPG.

Featuring art director Tim Coman and principle concept artist Sean Andrew Murray, the video offers a nice long look at the thinking behind the game's visuals. A key focus for the team came from R. A. Salvatore, who acts as the game's narrative consultant. Also a New York Times best-selling author, Salvatore said, "when you ask someone to save the world, you really want to give them a world worth saving." Which is a cool little soundbite, innit?

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is out early next month. Vid's below. You can read our latest preview of the game here. I said it was "like a beaten up pair of old, comfy slippers," but as release nears, the excitement levels are rising...

Ive been watching this for a while, downloaded the demo last night and was really looking forward to it, all the cutscenes and intro kept me excited, but upon actually getting to the ingame visuals, i have to say i was pretty disappointed by the start of it. Am in 2 minds about this now.

Having played the demo, I'm just not sure. There was nothing wrong with it exactly, I just expected *more* - especially from Todd McFarlane. I was hoping for something slightly more interesting in design, and what I got was a Visual WoW clone. No, it obviously doesn't play like WoW - but it looks a hell of a lot like it (classic example #1 - compare the Gnomes).

I don't normally judge a game on it's appearance at all - for me, story is king - but there is just a mental wall there I don't seem to be able to get passed.

I guess I kind of feel like maybe Todd phoned it in a little, and that is very disappointing.

I'll give the demo another run through and see if it changes my mind.

@#5 doubt he phoned it in as you said, there was and maybe still is a great interview with him on xbl speaking about his art design for the game, he basically didn't want to stray too far away from the classic themes of rpg/fantasy games. I agree the gnomes look directly out of wow, but why change the classic look of a gnome just to be different. Some of the other enemy's I encountered in the demo looked great loved the boggarts very reminicent of zelda enemies and I stumbled on a cool looking white saberbear. I think what you've got to remember is the demo is set very early in the game, before you level your toon up, so its bound to be pretty basic.

I loved the demo. I am playing Skyrim now and similiraties are way too obvious. What with skill trees, lockpicking, enchanting potion making and specialties=) I find that it is way more story driven then Skyrim, though obviously has specific style (cartoony?) to it, that might put some ppl off. But the fact that they want to experiment (fate cards) and give us option to switch perks and specialties at any given moment is pretty awesome (ever RPG should do that IMO...) All in all I am looking forward to it!

I loved the demo. If you go on the Reckoning forums on 360a, most people are complaining about it. Maybe I got lucky with my glitch-free demo experience? Either way, it left me with a good enough taste in my mouth to pay it off last night.

With @5 there too. I had trouble staying awake through most of the demo. The story, what there was of one, was not very interesting.

It a bit of a mix between Fable and Dragon age not too bad.

I wanted to like the demo and was enjoying it until the dialogue broke while I was exploring the town - none of the conversations were actually getting spoken any more, and if there were multiple "pages" of text to what characters were saying, it would fly right through them so I would only actually be able to read the last things that they would've said.

I'll have to play back through it and hopefully I won't run into that again

I quite enjoyed the demo, but it definitely felt very Dragon Age-y. However, that is not a bad thing at all, so here's hoping 38 nail it :)

Hmm. This is the second time a Mass Effect cross-promotion has gotten me to like another game. The first time I got into Dragon Age because I wanted the Blood Dragon Armor, now I played the demo for this game to get the armor set that comes with it and now I am planning on getting this game Day 1.

I played the demo twice (the first time I wasnt able to play it all the way through) and the first time I played it it had a problem with speaking to NPC characters (no voice and it'd speed through the text), but when I got back from work and played it again from the start no less everything was glitch free till the very end and I had a great time throughout. :D

Buying it on day 1, hopefully it will let me use the character I made in the demo! Im rather invested in her even though my time with her was brief.

@19 The same happened to me and the only reason I'm trying to finish it is because I want to get the extras for Mass Effect 3.

I don't know why they would release a demo with all these problems, in my case it removed the game from my must buy list. Also, I know this isn't a 100% action game, but the combat wasn't as fluid as I thought it would be.
