Report: Skyrim’s New Patch Nukes All Resistances & Brings Backwards Flying Dragons With It

Dan Webb

Bethesda’s latest patch for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim landed on consoles across the world today – and is in fact still being rolled out. However, initial reports across the internet state that unfortunately it brings with it backwards flying dragons for some users and nukes every resistance in the game.

Title update 1.2 was meant to fix many glitches and issues that had been discovered since the game’s November 11th release, and while it’s unclear whether it’s had the desired effect on those issues, the erratic dragons and lack of resistance for not just player characters, but for NPCs as well, are widely reported.

That means that any resistance to fire, frost, disease, etc. is currently borked as a result of the latest patch, meaning that Flame Atronachs are currently as susceptible to fire as they are frost. That means that any armour enchantment boasting a resistance to any element is currently ineffective too and that goes for any non-player characters and enemies as well.

This 1.2 update Skyrim snafu is one in a long line of Bethesda Game Studio issues with bugs and patches over recent years and will surely come as a disappointment to Skyrim fans as it seems a backwards step rather than a positive move. Of course, players can reject the patch and play offline until 1.3 comes, whenever that may be, but this is surely going to come as a disappointment to most Skyrim fans, effectively making the game worst post-patch than it was pre-patch.

Oh, and backwards flying dragons!

  • Np, Ill just climb up to that dragon with my horse. He goes anywhere, yanno.
  • The dragons are adapting!
  • I see a dragon, its getting...its getting...further?? GET BACK HERE LOL
  • The new glitchy dragons are funny as hell
  • Maybe the dragons just know well enough to back away now. I do that too if something looks like its going to kick my ass.
  • I have to update just to see the backwards flying dragons. Ad for resistances I don't use them so all the npc mages are going to fear me lol
  • I had no problems with Skyrim before this 1.2 Update. Guess i'll just wait for 1.3 Update. But this is NOT a disappointment. I still love this game.
  • Might wait a bit to play (update) this and see how many of my friends are effected by this.
  • The backwards dragon was funny and I don't have any resistances besides the occasional potion so it doesn't hurt me.
  • i pray i have no problems when i update my game tonight lol
  • Hmmmm... Can't tell if Dragons are trolling...
  • Surely its worth getting the patch just for dragons flying backwards lol. =)
  • What ever those dragons are smoking i want some!!!!
  • Great, gonna have to go home and unplug my ethernet cord before I crank up Skyrim. I love you Bethesda, but this kind of sucks. I was looking forward to having fewer bugs, not more. I have not encountered a lot of major bugs, but I have run across a few that were pretty annoying. Oh well, they'll get it all sorted eventually; they always do.
  • Fought two dragons post-patch and not noticed this glitch. I haven't noticed any problems with my resistances either.
  • I am going to say this. This is FUNNY as hell. This is also going to go down as a most memorable glitch of all time, similar to the mario 64 cartridge glitch and fallout 3 spinning heads
  • Bethesda's patches to their games bring more bugs with them? How surprising.
  • @13, me too! I'll be updating on saturday at same time as I get my last lot of f:nv dlc. Be a competition to see which game has more bugs. As for the flyin in reverse dragons? Bring it on! Could make a nice challenge. Gotta be a funny sight to see.
  • I have had no problems whatsoever since the new update. And I've been playing all day. :P
  • Resistance thing is kinda annoying. The backwards dragons look brilliant though :D
  • Eh I don't really care. Resistances have never been something I've worried about and my dragons seem normal to me. Compare the epicness of this game to pretty much anything else and minor bugs really don't matter.
  • @14 Yknow, this might sound crazy, but instead of unplugging your Ethernet cord... just DONT do the patch when it asks instead?
  • they are far from game breaking bugs, I think its actually impossible to be disapointed with skyrim!
  • Looks like the glitched achievement ("Master Criminal")in non-english versions has not been fixed. Can anyone confirm that? I tried once but maybe i missed one of the cities.
  • i only came on here cause i just threw a fire ball at my fire Atronach and it killed it.....looks like i found my answer :( never had a problem (except combining morokei mask and arch mages outfit gives me "NO HEAD") with the game til just now :( i'm sad now!!!
  • So I've been holding off on buying Skyrim because of budget, so I guess I made an ok move for now. I still consider buying it.
  • fail!
  • Bethesda and there frickin glitches... They haven't released a game yet that hasn't needed multiple patches and fixes..
  • What happens if you no install patch??
  • Bethesda today is just as incompetent as it was 10 years before. What a pathetic company, and we idiots are still buying their games. Well, Skyrim was the last one I bought from bethshit. Won't get the patch anyway, it doesn't fix the only problem I have with this game so fuck this shit unnecessary patch.
  • Bah! So I was all stoked that the patch was was coming out today, because this was about when I'm going to finish the new Assassin's Creed and dive back into Skyrim. Guess I'll just have to disconnect the Ethernet cord until the new update comes. Oh well. On a side note, that's one funny dragon.
  • @29, then you cant connect to xbox live i honestly think this game is stupid
  • @#29 - The game is as it was before, but you can't play it logged onto Live. Simple.
  • @22 and 32 That was my concern. I have not declined an update before, but they always say "you will be disconnected from xbox live" or some such. If I decline the update and then go to the dashboard later, will I be reconnected to xbox live so that I can play some other game online? Will I instead have to reboot? Like I said, it has just never been an issue for me before. I dearly love this game, and will be playing the crap out of it regardless, but I would like to be able to take a break and shoot some people online if I so choose.
  • I'm just disappointed that the patch doesn't fix any of the broken quests. I've currently have 3 quests I can't finish because they're glitched. Now on top of that the dragons fly backwards. This game was supposed to be my top game from the last 5 years and its just turned into an utter disappointment...
  • Oh, thanks Webb. Sorry, your post hadn't loaded when I started typing.
  • We're lucky. The PS3 guys are pissed beyond belief. It didn't even fix much of their lag issues and yet it brought all of this mess with it.
  • Wonder how long til they 'fix' this now -_-
  • He used to fly around like all the other dragons, until he took an arrow to the wing.
  • The dragon looks scared :(
  • @35 How can just having 3 buggy quests ruin the ENTIRE game for you? Purely out of curiosity. I mean hell if it were a main quest, (that you needed to complete for an achievement), I would understand the frustration. There is simply so much to do in this game, how can it be a disappointment?
  • OH NOOOO! NOTHING EVEN REMOTELY BAD HAS HAPPENED! OH NO! PANIC AND DESPAAAAAAAIIRR! Honestly guys? Getting worked up over two insignificant (albeit awesome) things?
  • some glitches should be left in the game as they make it more entertaining :D
  • If you bought Skyrim expecting a flawless game, then you deserve what you get :P It's Bethesda. I love them, but man these games are always glitchy as can be. Hasn't stopped me from putting in 80 hours though....and neither will this patch. Just need to decide if I want to download it or not. Usually have 2 flame atronarchs following me around, and the resistance thing could be a problem lol
  • They're just beggining at driving with automatic gears and dont know R means REAR-they thikn its RIDE. I think they need to put some speed cameras on the air too
  • Wow, even bethesda sucks at keeping up with this shit.
  • I. Fucking. Knew. It. Somehow I knew this patch would backfire. Looks like I'll be playing a lot more Reach until this, SR3, and BF3 get sorted. I hate glitches.
  • is borked a word? or did you try to go for broke?
  • Oh that explains why I was taking so much damage against the frost dragon, my anti frost amulet wasnt working!
  • Come on guys, it's a fantasy game who are we to say dragons couldn't do that.
  • @47; Glad somebody else mentioned that too....although i find reach annoying too because it's all frag fags >.< What is it these days...maybe it's time to quit games lol Patch's doing opposite...and problems in games not even being sorted -_-
  • glad i finished it last night
  • Not to mention, after applying this update you can only use a bookcase once before it become useless...
  • hope Oghma Infinium still works
  • #54, if not just uninstall patches and play the character you want to boost offline until you get to the point you want.
  • This is a serious question, but do developers test their patches before they release them, or do they just kind of hope for the best?
  • Bethesda: Kings of making huge, well-reviewed, open-world games riddled with bugs, imbalances, and glitches. But I'm sure most fans are to engrossed in the developers' nethers, anyhow, and will continue to play, painfully blind to the errors and claiming it to be the gaming event of the century.
  • I sent in a bug report about obtaining quest items before getting the actual quest and the problems involved. They said they are sorry but its not a technical issue but a gameplay issue and I should save often and revert back to a previous save. I'm starting to really get annoyed even though I love the game.
  • Wonder if this was a hint at the what the Dragon Armor DLC will do...
  • I haven't seen backwards flying, but what I have seen is dragons dropping out of nowhere into your path. Say as you leave a cave or a ruin, it will vibrate, and then the dragon is in front of you. No flight, no fire from the sky, just boom. I had it happen 3 times today post patch.
  • @57 Painfully blind? We play the game 'cause it's fantastic, with said glitches and bugs. I've yet to play a game that is completely free from glitches and bugs, and i dont expect to, period. And even if some of us are engrossed, it points to the games' quality. Ever wonder why CoD has many fans? Halo? Gears? Fifa? Its not because these games are glitch free, its because the fans see past them and enjoy them. If you are what seeing clearly is, i'm glad im blind.
  • Hehehe so funny glitch dragons. Let hope 1.3 version patches incoming to fixes it. I will play Skyrim more later this week and see if glitch dragon backward happen to me.
  • lmao thats funny, bit of a shame yes but funny! hopefuly 1.3 will patch everything, not likely tho, hope its sorted before any DLC is out! still love the game this wont stop me playing, and as for resistances - real men use a big axe! :)
  • Only had one glitch before the patch which stopped me getting the Oblivion Walker Achievement. But that just gave me an excuse to start another character. Post patch I don't use magic resistance so I've not noticed that and sadly not seen any backwards flying dragons.
  • Damn. Those dragons are learning fast.
  • These dragons are a little..... *puts on sunglasses* Backwards Queue laughter.
  • By the way kids and kiddies, that video posted? Is the PS3 version of the game. There are absolutely NO reports of this happening to the 360 version. So, we're safe guys.
  • That sucks. I might just wait and pick up GOTY at this point. I have more then enough games so now I have good reason to wait a bit longer to play Skyrim=)
  • I love this game. That's all there is to it.
  • In the spanish version the achievement master criminal does not work :(
  • It looks like the texture issues have been fixed. I play on a 52 inch plasma so those texture problems were noticable BIG TIME. But now the detail of the game looks alot better then before.
  • proper amazing game the glitches make it that much much more amazing and funnier
  • In the spanish ( europe) version the achievement master criminal does not work :(
  • Any of you have ever had a horse walk on water while you are on its back?
  • @69 Could of not said it better myself! I have put up with any Bethesda RPG 'bugs' in a lot of their games and I will continue to do so. With a game as big as Skyrim why not just move to the next quest or explore more if there is a glitched quest?
  • @67 Winning.
  • At least I can see the detail in my character's hands now.
  • It's not a glitch. The Dragons just know better than to mess with Dovahkiin.
  • Besides. I got through New Vegas with all it's original glitches. I've barely saw a glitch so far in Skyrim. Once I killed a FrostSpider and it fell through the floor and ended up about 10 feet in front of me, but that is it. As long as the game is still playable I'm OK.
  • Weird thing is, I was doing that exact quest today too and saw the same erratic dragon movements. Only on that one though, the rest of my dragons are fine
  • Don't care about the small glitches, if it were game-wrecking, I would care. If they could possibly fix the freezing that rarely occurs so there's no freezing at all, I would be stoked :)
  • and @67, I was on my 360.
  • See, this is what happens when you make an awesome game with a few bugs and glitches. It's still a baddass game and people will still play it! Take some notes dev companies! As for the resistances, if your character is a walking badass like my dark elf assassin is....resistances don't matter anyways.
  • @67 how can you say that when multiple people in this very thread have said that they have experienced issues?
  • This is preety funny, but not as funny as the unicorn glitch in Red Dead Redemption. If you want to know what Im talking about, look it up on youtube.
  • Backwards Flying Dragon Syndrome (BFDS) has become a serious epidemic today....
  • It seems to only be affecting dragons that are quest related (for me anyways). The random dragons are fine but I was sent on two "kill dragon at X location" bounties and both times they shifted into reverse and lagged my game. Also, one of the random dragons didn't land after circling and roaring at me so that wasn't actually fixed. I still love Bethesda though!
  • I found that I lost all my frost resistance while fighting Hagravens, Forsworn and a Frost Dragon. Needless to say, getting to Alduin's wall took for EVER!
  • Yeah, good on you, commenter 57. You're so enlightened and rebellious, not all like us sheeple just blindly following the will of Bethesda, the king of apparently overrated video games.
  • And friends have been asking me why I haven't bought this game already. I can now point to this.
  • its nearly impossible to make a game as big as skyrim without there being any bugs, it doesnt stop it being an amazing game. Call of Duty is full of glitches thats players expoilt yet millions still play it. undoubtably Bethesda will have seen this and have been dissapointed by it but i bet there working to fix it.
  • Shame the patch has bugs, but i feel a bit more testing and quality control would have avoided the need for a rush bug fix. Still enjoying my skyrim tho... wish would stop getting rushed out tho...
  • What ever happened to he art of testing somthing I can live with obscure niggles going unnoticed but somthing like that suggest they dont test anything.
  • Fixes more than it breaks. Don't see a reason not to download the patch unless you use resistance gear (Don't know anybody who does)
  • So does this resistance issue applies to your character you play as? I'm a Bosmer so I have a resistance to disease and poison does that mean it's gone now with the patch? Also playing online is not an option for me, if I play offline I get no time stamp with no stamp your achievements count for nothing on this site. Does this flying backwards affect all dragons or just some?
  • @54 and others wanting to do the Oghma Infinium glitch, you can use a normal dresser or drawer or even a chest. Order would go; Open draw / dresser / chest Read book store close menu open menu and take out book Rinse and repeat
  • simply epic, i haven't got my copy yet :( hope this is fixed before i get some money together in the new year, so want this game, but this is so disappointing Bethesda are gonna have to do something in way of apology for this, they've made a big boo-boo
  • Must say, while it makes Bethesda look pretty incompetent, it's not the end of the world.
  • why does this not surprise me, yet more fail from Bethesda
  • So bad times for bretons then >:D
  • have they fixed the waking nightmare quest?
  • All i want is for Bethesda to fix Quest item glitches stuck in inventory, or not giving credit for along with some glitched quests, namely "Blood on the Ice", i still haven't been able to begin this quest to eventually purchase the Windhelm home.
  • Bethesda really need to hire some play testers... as the ones they have now are god awful lol.
  • 102 - if you're talking about the Alto Wine, finish the quest and you will be able to sell them as normal. Blood on the Ice is really annoying, though. I would like a house there.
  • so can i get vampirism while i'm a werewolf?!
  • im not having any problems with the game. although i havent been on live for a little over a month and have no updates.
  • I don't understand, my armors working just fine?
  • I had absolutely no problems (I didn't even notice the supposed texture issue) until this patch. Now I have bouts of slowdown all the time.
  • lol, the already glitchy game gets a broken patch that was not attempting to fix the major issues anyway...awesome stuff. If this happened to a less popular game people would be more upset...but everyone and their mother is a Bethesda fanboy so of course most people say its no big deal.
  • I have watched the video twice and can't stop laughing at it seriously, thanks bethesda the funniest glitch of the year. Now i need to see if this glitch happens to me lol. But fallout nv was bloody glitchy for me quite after i did lonesome road dlc and it made me get quite pissed at the game but finshed it with 100% gamerscore on it any way.
  • @95 The time stamp only applies when its a multiplayer achievement so you're fine.
  • Just encountered a dragon flying backwards, it's pretty fun to see. @97 Bethesda doesn't have anything to apologize for imo. They made an incredible game that has more than made up for a few bugs, which every game has. I've seen a couple of bugs but nothing game breaking or anything that has ruined my experience and I've got 84 hours into Skyrim. If anything they've earned my patience, I don't mind giving them the time to get it fixed.
  • I came here for the laughs, and the comments good day
  • "Wouldn't be a Bethesda game if the code wasn't fucked up".
  • need a patch for those glitchy quests ( thieves guild taking care of business : that dude is forever AFK and dont meet me in the ratway) and the music instruments from bards college stay in my inventory even after i gave them & quest completed wtf
  • I guess this is what they mean for dragon combat being unscripted?
  • Kay for alot of people that dont know this... well just play games and not make them. Making games like bethesda are very large scale games. THeirs definitely going to be glitches. I'd really like to see some of you make a game like skyrim and get to read about ppl complaining about a small a^^ bug. You just can wait a week or two too play a game? kind of sad...dont update the game either if its that big of a problem.
  • @116 they did say in one of the gameplay trailers before launch they didn't even know what the dragons would do lol being a programmer and knowing what kind of a scale a game like this must be on behind the scenes it would be impossible to not have any bugs at all. there is so much that goes into a video game period, let alone one this size. i agree with those that say people don't mind glitches in games like call of duty, but when it comes to something like this they're hyper-critical of every detail. i do agree that a patch shouldn't break things, but again from a technical standpoint, making a dragon fly backwards without meaning to could be as simple as tossing in a minus sign on accident. and, with it seemingly being random, i could see how it got past game testers. sidenote: i'd really be interested to see how many lines of code a game of this scale actually has lol.
  • Has anyone come across the glitch where the Skyforge is levitating, and the pathway leading up to it is now a ledge, making you go under the map :P. Never encountered this prior to the patch, its now happened to me twice tonight :/
  • The only real glitch I've come across is if I save and quit inside Breezehome (it's fully upgraded) when I come back to play the game later, all the walls have disappeared, and most of the furniture is gone, but all my stuff is still there, so there are huge piles of stuff on the ground. Oh, and the doors are still there, even though the walls are not.
  • This patch nuked my saves everyone refused to load dumped me back to Main menu.. so much fun having to start again after 100+ hours :/ Saves backed up to USB in a hope theyll get fixed next patch. wondering ifanyoneelse has had this?
  • Hahahaha thats hilarious so this is post patch or PRE patch? I hope to god its post I want to experience this!!!
  • I'm still in awe of the games Bethesda make and I don't we can ask for more from a development team, At least they are working to fix problems. Off topic - I can't believe how many people are worried about playing offline and not downloading the patch. If you want to play another game online hit the dashboard button and select the line that says "Connect to xbox live", tap 'A'! All this talk of disconnecting ethernet cables, why? You can't complain about glitches that are caused by bad code if you can't work your xbox properly!!
  • Patch 1.3--tiny mammoths in place of all butterflies! All weapons are a chicken! :D
  • ok say this patch was not tested at all - surley they must of seen this
  • @112 oh yes, i've not actually played my own copy of this yet, but i've been around my friends house playing it there, and i was whole disappointed when my one and only dragon encounter was solely it flying backwards away from me, no epic fight. it was a big anti-climax for me, and so far, i've only got a negative experience of this game :( still, it's an amazing looking beast of one, and cannot wait until i can play it through myself, oblivion was amazing, and i'm sure this will be too, but i'm thinkning of all the people who are having this amazing came toned down for them because of this unfortunate patch, hopefully they'll ahve it ironed out ASAP, and we'll all just forget it ever happened
  • i had Alduin stay in the sky, not moving. was wierd
  • had the dragons go backward once on me,reset ,loaded the same save again ,and was working normally again, other thing i noticed was shader problems with ice Once, again reloaded and problem seem to go away, for now, besides that i am very VERY enjoying my time in skyrim, alot of games i rush to finish(i don't know why)but skyrim,i just want to take my time with, i am enjoying lot, love this game :) happy.. happy! :)
  • @120 same thing happened in my home. i could walk through the walls etc. Only problems i have seen so far is that the Thieves guild wont let me progress, the guy never goes to the sewer pub so i can start initiation. Dragon problems.... i only had 2 that i couldnt absorb... then the patch came out... i go to where they are and i have to fight Acient dragons... which is a tough fight.... and he never landed at all.... Texture mapping has been flawless on mine before and after patch and i play on a 46" bravia. I still get the mammoth that spawns out of nowhere on top of another mammoth. 90 hours in and still playing LVL48.
  • That dragon isn't glitched, he's just high on skooma.
  • prob jus a ps3 prob
  • updates are great and all but i am still stuck at this stupid door in this stupid dungeon! wtf! can we get some mechanical and quest fixes next? those are what are really messing up the game not the fact that the dragons are flying funny. this is batman arkham city all over again. i am so close to beating it then a stupid glitch makes me want to get rid of it. so let's go bethesda. still love this game though! GoTY 4 sure!
  • this explains so much because im a dark elf and fire was messing me up pretty badly out of no where and the dragon thing happened to me and although it never figured out how to fly and get pwnd it was pretty hilarious
  • @ #130 I can't believe someone thumbed down your comment. Best comment I've seen on this thread
  • Now, I'm having real problems figuring out how so many people screw their own game files up on Skyrim. I'm over 215 hours in with nearly 900 saves made (though most overwritten) and I find it astounding that people get caught out by the most minor of glitches only to bitch endlessly about them, so I'll state a few tips to help out. - Save often. Before big fights, before important Quest progression, and often (say every 30 minutes) out in the wilderness. - When everything disappears in your house when you load, it's because you've loaded direct from the title screen. Reload your save file and everything should be back to normal. - Similar to the last point, when the Claw Door puzzles or any kind of interactivity doesn't function properly, make a save and reload it. It'll usually reload it properly then. - Small aesthetic errors are not worth complaining about. By all means report them to Bethesda, but if it doesn't break the game, it's not a priority. - The only real 2 broken Quests I know about are Blood on the Ice for Hjerim in Windhelm and The Jagged Crown for the Empire. These are 2 huge priorities for patch v1.3. I've also heard about some problems with the endgame Quests, but I've not gone that far and I don't want to spoil it for myself. Put simply, save often, reload if it breaks and wait for the next patch. It's not a huge issue, I remember my FNV save file crashing every 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Now that was deserving of some rage posting, but these Skyrim issues are nowhere near that bad.
  • Skyrim naysayers shalt be burnt at the stake. Burn foul staggarts, BURN!
  • i used to fly backwards too...but then i got an arrow to the knee
  • Somebody needs to burn all the whiners. This game is huge making it (virtually)impossible for the play testers to find all he glitches. Some glitches can't be found until the millions of fans get there hands on it. I bet you people that are complaining are the same type of people that would cuss out the cashier at McDonald's saying that your double cheeseburger is just a McDouble because it only has 1 piece of cheese instead of 2 pieces of cheese on it even though it's not his fault. Go drown in some dihydrogen monoxide
  • Still loving this game but woah, why these dragons running away? :P
  • Yeah, I've not noticed any glitches before or after the patch. I am truly blessed. However, if this is happening for a lot of people, well, they will get them all eventually, and it is a huge game. A staff of less than 1000, (and most of those work on other things) can't find all the glitches first time. (Millions of gamers are still finding new glitches now, what hope does a 50ish strong testing team have?) If this is really spoiling your enjoyment of the game, play somthing that works first-time, every-time, like COD, you unimaginative people.
