Madden NFL 09 Cover Revealed: The Curse is Over!

Madden NFL 09 Cover Revealed: The Curse is Over!
Written Friday, April 25, 2008 by Alan Pettit

That's right, folks. The dreaded "Madden Curse" wherein whatever athlete they choose to grace their video game has an absolutely awful year or ends up getting hurt is now over. How can I be so sure, you ask? Well, they choose one of the greatest players of all-time this year, but he has already announced his retirement. Unless the curse spills over into his personal life, I think he's safe. Everybody, I introduce to you the Madden NFL 09 cover athlete... Brett Favre!

Madden NFL 09 strives to take authenticity and depth of gameplay to an new level with more than 85 new features and enhancements, including the all-new Total Control Animation system. This system will allow players to perform combination moves like never before and includes an innovative picture-in-picture playcall window. In Madden NFL 09, the game engine is continually assessing the player's performance and will adapt a custom experience to every type of gamer, from newcomer to the veteran Madden NFL player.

Madden NFL 09 will also feature a network-inspired broadcast presentation. Players will benefit from the authentic football knowledge of an in-booth play-by-play and color commentary team featuring Cris Collinsworth and Tom Hammond. In addition, numerous graphical enhancements have been made, including realistic weather and grass, sleeker player models and exterior stadium views.

Madden NFL 09 gives gamers the ability to create online leagues. Fans can now take their rivalries online and compete in leagues with up to 32 teams. Online league play will feature in-depth stat tracking and a flexible scheduling option.

Give me real football anyday! (and i mean soccer - just in case there's any confusion)

Eh...not overjoyed about this news.I don't like Farve....and i'm not particularly fond of Madden lately either.I think it got horrible after they (EA) bought out the NFL lisence. They don't have any compitition anymore...so what do they do?They take the same game as the previous year, maybe add some new people here and there and fix the rostor for the trades that have occured and what-not....then they update the graphics.Wha-lah.A process that probably only costs about a fourth of the price of Madden '05.....hell, I think Madden '98 probably cost more to make than EA's newer, shoddy sports games.

i'm actually mad that there won't be a madden curse. i guess favre will just have to come back.
and 'feel my rage' you obviously haven't played 2k's all-pro football if you think that 2k has a shot with competing with madden. they did back in the day, but those days are over. madden forever!

Wow I really wish an active player would have been on the cover. Just so I know who not to pick in fantasy football.

I like the cover choice. The new controls worry me. I did not like the QB vision feature.

Friday, April 25, 2008 @ 01:49:28 PM

First I'm curious why Favre? Though I like Favre, I just don't understand the choice to put a retired player on the cover. Second, I'm very excited about the online leagues and the fact that they're finally giving the presentation aspect of the game some love. Glad they're finally getting rid of the generic radio guy and going to professional play-by-play announcement. I get Madden every year but this one's got me pumped. Can't wait!

Hmm... nice yellow shorts/trousers etc. Where can I get some of those ?!

Friday, April 25, 2008 @ 02:19:12 PM

Great PR move by EA. When Tomlinson rejected to be the cover athlete a couple years ago, they should have known they were in trouble. Trying a rookie last year in Vince Young was a bad choice, since he could very well have been a fluke, but he's a winner, so his stats don't matter. Now EA has to bank on a big-name retirement every year from here on out, so the "Madden Curse" will be over. And hopefully, some of the new features will make this game as good as the last good installment: Madden '07 for the original Xbox.

Oh, and some achievements that will take me more than 1 day to get.

Friday, April 25, 2008 @ 02:37:24 PM

Packer fan here, so I'm happy with the choice... but confused as to the pick of a retired player. Still, Favre on the cover won't change how I buy football games: every two years, and a year after release dates so I get them for bargain bin prices. That's so I can see how little the genre adds over the years.

i think this is the perfect choice for the cover because it is the 20th anny of madden and why not have one of the greatest players ever be on the cover? it would have been foolish to put someone who might not make the HoF on the cover. only other 2 that could have been as good would have been brady or manning (eli or peyton)

insanekid13: "what a waist of a cover"

What a waste of your 3th grade teacher's time during a spelling lesson. Anyway, I thought Favre would get more positive responses than what he has been. I love this choice, and never expected him at all. He really does deserve it, despite the haters out there. He is so pure in football, unlike most QB's today.

Yeah good choice considering he will probably unretire (already in interview says that he is available if green bay were to need him) maybe the madden curse is going to get more comlex, maybe aaron rodgers will now get injured to allow for a brett favre comeback and then the curse will live on.
