Games Convention 08 - Top 5 Games
Games Convention 08 - Top 5 Games
Written Sunday, August 24, 2008 by Dan Webb

So the madness has stopped and we are just starting to settle down after a mental week. As I write this we're sat in the hotel bar churning out thousands of words an hour and as a result, we can bring you the first of our Games Convention Top 5's and we start with our highlights. You know, the games that we were really, really impressed with.

The following 5 games are games that we saw at the show that completely knocked our socks off. Of course there are a few missing, like Fallout 3 and Fable 2 but its called a top 5 for one reason, we can only have 5 and we've seen so much of those up till now that we just want the damn final version!

There are seriously too many good games coming out in the next 12 months but we're not complaining. Check out what 5 titles completely blew us away after the jump, in no particular order.

Alpha Protocol

The creators of Neverwinter Nights 2 and KOTOR II, Obsidian, are back and have teamed up with SEGA to bring you Alpha Protocol. The game lets you take control of Michael Thornton in an espionage RPG thriller of epic proportions. Inspired by the three JB’s of the fictional spy drama universe (James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer), the player is given the chance to shape the destiny of Thornton in a tale that doesn’t focus on black and white but shades of gray. What we saw of this behind closed doors at the Convention this year was enough to convince us that Obsidian have another classic on their hands. With great visuals and fantastic RPG elements, even the early build was enough to “wow” us.

Bayonetta

Bayonetta is the one of four games that SEGA decided to publish with Platinum Games at the helm. This title most notably has ex-Devil May Cry frontman, Hideki Kamiya steering the ship and from what we saw, he was steering it to hack and slash heaven. The main protagonist of the title is a witch called Bayonetta and she’ll be the diva you’re controlling as you beat down some evil angels with your dual wielded guns on both your arms and hands and crazy hair. The combat was fluent, outrageous and was set in beautiful diverse environments. Step aside Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry, it looks like we have a genre leader coming to town.

Far Cry 2

No shocks here. Ubisoft’s upcoming shooter is looking certain to be a smash hit. Equipped with a living breathing environment full of destructible environments, plenty of native animals and a multiplayer map editor that is the best I have ever seen. The games visuals and in-game atmosphere will be a huge part of its success but it will be the online multiplayer with integrated map editor that will keep us coming back for me. With no real restrictions and guidelines on how to play the game, Far Cry 2 is shaping up to be a sandbox FPS where anything or any tactic goes, so long as you take down the local feared arms dealer. Game of the year? Definitely a contender.

Left 4 Dead

Zombies, zombies and more zombies is the central theme of Valve’s upcoming team co-operative FPS title. Take 3 of your closest friends with you online to take down hordes and hordes of the undead. What we saw of Left 4 Dead at the Games Convention this year was enough to confirm our previous elation regarding the title. Up close, Left 4 Dead is an incredible piece of eye candy and the “director” code adds tonnes and tonnes of replayability to the title. Seriously, what more do you want than to duke it out with an army of zombies with a few mates. Pure gaming heaven.

Quantum of Solace

This one actually shocked us more than any this year. For years we’ve been after a Bond title to rival the much heralded Goldeneye of years gone by. Quantum of Solace is certainly shaping up to be the best Bond title in nearly 10 years. What we have here is a genuine Bond title a.) with its voice cast, b.) with its character models and beautiful environments and c.) with its sheer bad ass attitude. Will it be enough to rival Goldeneye and bring back the glory days to a much needed franchise, only time and a good multiplayer arena will tell.

Look out for the more previews, videos, a few more Top 5's and images from the event in the coming weeks.

Can you give us any more info on Left 4 Dead? Ive been waiting for a while to hear anything more than a blurb on the game. It sounds great from those blurbs so far.

Awesome, thanks Webb - Can't wait to read it. I was surprised seeing Quantum of Solace in the list, I'll keep an eye on that from here on out.

@ SC - Sure dude, there will be a fully detailed preview in the next week or so detailing every key thing we noted. In the meantime, just know that it is everything it was billed up to be... Amazing!!!

Who's behind the new Bond? Does EA still hold the reigns, or is it back in Rare's hands?

God I really REALLY hope the new Bond game is good. I loved (and still do!) Goldeneye and all the Bond games since sucked. The gameplay of Goldeneye was so fun, no other games have come close to it I'm afraid. Sure there are great game in their on respect, but there hasn't been another "Goldeneye".

Me and 2 other friends are just counting down the days until Left 4 Dead, the wait it killing us!

Fallout 3 and Fable II are my number 1's still for now. Long live the RPGs!

These all look terrific--I'll be pre-ordering a lot this year again, it looks like. Left 4 Dead looks like the nicest new IP this fall. I'm curious also about the Bond game, as noted above, I'll be watching that one, too. Nice brief coverage:)

I'm dubious about Far Cry 2 after the horrific last incarnation on 360, hopefully they've ported from the PC version.

Well, I've got $600 saved up for this year to spend on my own. I've also got Christmas. When that's still not enough, you know its going to be a great year. I've already got Mercenaries 2, Fallout 3 and Gears 2 pre-ordered. FarCry was one that I was keeping my eye on and I've heard enough good things to finally make a decision to buy. I'm interested in the new James Bond title. I was a big fan of goldeneye when I was a kid and I've been longing for a good bond title since. Great Job Guys, keep it up!!!

Quantum of Solace looks soo good. It looks like not only is it going to be the first Bond title well worth buying since Goldeneye, but it also looks good enough to make up for the dodgy name!!

Far Cay 2 looks very, very promising. Bayonette I'll reserve all thougts on this game until it's out. Action titles come and go and I would not be surpirsed if this game follows suit.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
