Game of the Year Awards 2012 - The Winners
Game of the Year Awards 2012 - The Winners

It’s time. After 12 months of playing the very best (and worst) that 2012 had to offer, we’re finally in a position to crown our best games of the year. As ever, we’ve got a range of categories, each ordered into runners-up and winners.

The real deal though? The real deal is our Game of the Year 2012, a title elevated above all others after extensive discussions, arguments and tantrums (mainly from Rich). So let’s cut the faffing and get to it. Let the awards begin.

Sometimes a game’s premise can be enough to convince us of its worth, enough to intrigue us or excite us without any further information. Here’s this year’s best.

We won’t lie. When Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed III would be set during the American revolution, we were disappointed. Feudal Japan would have been cool. Victorian London, maybe. But America? Boring. We were wrong. Moving the action to the emerging cities of the US at such a volatile time, and venturing away from urban environments into the wilderness was the most profound shift in the series yet. It’s not a perfect game, but Assassin’s Creed III has a great premise.

Ubisoft were at it again later this year with Far Cry 3. Lunatics, pirates and savage animals roaming a tropical island with deadly intent. A free-form, truly sandbox environment where you could dictate the action amongst a randomised world. A main campaign with a structured, scripted adventure marked by trippy hallucinations, flashbacks and the deteriorating mental state of its protagonist. Ubisoft' Montreal's Far Cry 3 mixes this all up together to create one of the best premises of the year.

It’s not often we get a game with as fresh a perspective as Dishonored. Set in a world that’s equal parts Dickens and Half-Life 2, with the sense of place matched only by the likes of Rapture, Arkane Studios’ creation took us to somewhere we’ve never been. Somewhere unique and fascinating. It did what games do best. Yet it’s what you can do in that world that makes Dishonored’s premise so engaging. Whether you prefer the slow, steady and stealthy approach, a balls out noisy offensive or this kind of acrobatic violence displayed here, the breadth of options is massively impressive. That Arkane conceived of this premise is great, that they pulled it off so successfully is jaw-dropping. That's why it's our best premise of 2012.

Make no mistake, 2012 was a triumphant year in terms of video game storytelling. The types of tale being told and the methods in which they were delivered  took a number of interesting turns in the past 12 months. Here’s the best.

As anyone who has ever played a Grand Theft Auto game is aware, Rockstar knows its cinema and in Max Payne 3 the developer pulled out all of the stops, drawing on Brian De Palma, Tony Scott and a raft of others to deliver troubled protagonist Max Payne’s latest squalid tale. With an intricate, complicated yet well-told narrative shot through with despair, loss, corruption and dark humour, Rockstar cemented their position as some of the best storytellers in the business.

Character arcs in video games are usually relegated to the progression of numbers. As their adventures play out, our heroes get stronger, better equipped, more nimble and more dangerous. Their actual characters, meanwhile, remain pretty stagnant. But not in Spec Ops: The Line. In Yager’s shooter the hero Captain Martin Walker enters as a soldier and emerges... something else entirely. In any other year Spec Ops: The Line would have won, but this was no ordinary year.

Seldom has a video game lit up social networks in the way The Walking Dead has. Marked by the hashtag #forclementine, these tweets and status updates weren’t about gameplay, but about the episodic title’s story. Rarely has a game inspired players to share their emotional responses so readily. Indeed, rarely has a game inspired such emotional responses. For years, critics of the medium have asked when a video game would make us cry. Some quietly referred to Aeris’ death in Final Fantasy VII. Now when they’re asked, they can choke back the tears and cite The Walking Dead. Best story of the year? Yes. It’s also possibly the best game story ever.

Everyone’s doing multiplayer these days, slapping it on games even when they don’t require it. Some though, some do it just right. Here’s 2012’s best examples.

Though we are now familiar with the basics, there’s no denying the pulling power of Call of Duty: Black Ops II’s multiplayer suite. It’s so fully featured, deep and compelling that only a fool would bet against it being the most-played online game in the world for the next 12 months. Whether it’s because of the thrilling moment to moment gameplay, the compelling progression system, or the revised and strengthened Zombies mode, Black Ops II will keep a lot of people happy for a long time.

There’s a simple joy to Borderlands 2’s co-operative multiplayer. Chucking players into a big open world world stuffed with guns and missions and alien nasties and guns and colourful environments and even more guns, Gearbox allows you to run around like lunatics in the pursuit of ever-increasing, ever-tasty XP. And guess what? Get three of your mates together and it’s massively entertaining, hugely compelling and joy-pukingly brilliant. Nothing can quite compare to Borderlands 2’s co-operative carnage.

Creating a worthy multiplayer suite is often easier said than done, especially for a studio who's not only working with one of the biggest video game franchises ever, but is a new studio altogether. 343 not only nailed multiplayer on their first outing with an IP they've never worked on before, but they did it and made it fresh at the same time. New weapons, well-designed maps and some new vehicles all contributed, but it's also balanced and supremely smooth to play. It's easily the best multiplayer experience on consoles and with Halo 4, 343 proved they have the experience and know how in their ranks to please fans and newcomers alike. Bravo, 343, you deserve all the praise you get.

As we approach the end of this generation developers are now squeezing every drop of power from consoles. The games below offer not just the most visually sumptuous games of the year, but the very best that the hardware is capable of offering.

One of the select few games this year to score full marks for graphics in our review category, Mass Effect 3’s cinematic look, deep blue tint, expressively modeled characters and intergalactic scope marks it out as an exceptional visual treat. The Mass Effect games have always looked great, even if the first game in the series suffered from horrible technical issues. Mass Effect 3 is the culmination of five years of stellar work from BioWare.

Forza games have always nailed that shiny, car showroom approach to creating mouth watering vehicle porn and Horizon is no exception. Yet in Playground Games’ open-world spin on the series comes the addition of some truly staggering draw distances and stunning vistas, marked by gorgeous time-context effects. It’s not often you’ll go flying into a barrier at 200 MPH because you were staring at a sunset. In Forza Horizon we did it all too often.

While the rest of the world began talking up the possibilities of the Xbox 720, 343 Industries was busy cooking up a little taste of the future with Halo 4. The most visually impressive title on any console in 2012, Halo 4 offers up the nearest we’ve had to next-gen graphics with retina-searing environments, insanely detailed cut-scenes and a spin on that world famous art style. A generational leap over its predecessors.

Much is made of visuals and gameplay, and rightly so. But a truly great game soundtrack can transport us to other worlds and offer drama unlike anything else. Here’s this year’s best original scores.

Clint Mansell’s soundtracks for Moon and (especially) Requiem for a Dream rank among the very best film score in recent years, so the composer’s presence on the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack is something of a coup. Mansell’s Leaving Earth and And End Once and for All (ironic, eh?) mark the highlights of a fantastically evocative score, but there’s some fantastic work from stalwart Sam Hulick too. Mass Effect 3’s soundtrack upholds the series’ impeccable reputation.

While Mass Effect 3 courted big name composers, Rockstar took a different approach with Max Payne 3, enlisting the talents of little known Los Angeles quartet HEALTH. It’s an at times discordant, pulsing, metallic score that lurches between intensity and introspection. Fitting, considering the game’s dark atmosphere. We’d like to hear what HEALTH can come up with when let off the leash even more.

With a CV featuring collaborations with the likes of Massive Attack, Damon Albarn, David Bowie and Snoop Dog, Neil Davidge’s triumphant Halo 4 soundtrack should hardly be surprising. Yet the way the veteran producer retained the series’ sweeping orchestral melodies while also upping the electronica to embrace the game’s new antagonists was a masterstroke. The best-selling game soundtrack of all time, Halo 4 is the best original score of 2012.

New franchises are the lifeblood of the industry. They’re the games that most forcefully introduce new ideas, new characters, new gameplay elements and more. They keep our imaginations alive with the possibilities of the games. Here’s the best of 2012.

Who knew adventure games still had the power to so completely capture the hearts and the credit cards of the mainstream. Telltale’s The Walking Dead not only revitalised the genre, it also delivered on the promise of episodic content (something which seems to have eluded much of the industry), told one of the best stories the medium has ever seen and had thousands crying over their controllers all at the same time. And that was just the first season! Bring on Season Two.

Meanwhile, the True Crime series may have been temporarily suspended, but Activision’s loss was Square Enix’s gain as the publisher built on those foundations to create Sleeping Dogs, a thoroughly enjoyable romp around an open-world Hong Kong. With great combat, fun driving and some brilliant missions, Sleeping Dogs is far better than the games that preceded it. From the death of an old franchise rises one of the greats of 2012. We’re hungry for more.

Break it down into its constituent parts and there isn’t much that’s truly new about Dishonored. With bits of Bioshock, Deus Ex, Half-Life 2, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and more besides, the game’s influences are worn proudly. Yet chuck all these elements in together and what emerges is completely fresh. This is an entirely new universe, a passport to a fantastic new world. As such the opportunities for Arkane to build upon this promise is great. That’s why Dishonored is our Best New Franchise of 2012.

Remember when XBLA was a place for ports of stinky old arcade games and the (very) occasional gem like Geometry Wars? Now it’s the delivery system for some of the greatest games on the platform, a place where creativity and innovation can flourish. Here’s the best examples of 2012.

We loved Trials HD so much it earned our Arcade Game of the Year award in 2009 and, despite the fact that the sequel has only secured a runners-up spot this year, Trials Evolution still offers substantial progress. Slightly more accessible, yet no less demanding of precision, it’s a game that demands you give that tricky track just one. More. Go. Chuck in a brilliant multiplayer mode and RedLynx has earned themselves another triumph.

In any other year in the history of the platform, Minecraft would have been the number one XBLA game. Indeed, in terms of sales it certainly is number one - racking up in excess of 5 million copies sold - a towering achievement. Yet Minecraft is relegated to a runners-up position only after long, angry discussions. A phenomenon, a endless creative tool, a classroom resource and just about as much fun as you can have with a controller, Minecraft’s ability to entertain is remarkable.

Such has been the success of The Walking Dead that Telltale had no choice but to schedule the entire first season of the game for release on disc. But its true home is on XBLA with short, powerful episodes released (roughly) once a month. This wonderfully told story of compromised decisions and desperate survival had us on the edge of our sofas. It flourished on XBLA, allowing us to mull over our choices. As such, The Walking Dead is a seminal work.

Without new ideas, creative industries wither and die, so it's of great importance that we celebrate innovation. And hey look! Here's a whole category devoted to it.

Since video games have existed, or rather since menus have existed in video games, fiddling about with the options has required a break in the action and a trawl through tabs and options. But not in Need for Speed: Most Wanted, thanks to Kinect. With this feature you can issue commands on the fly, as you drive. It may seem gimmicky and inconsequential but it by passes years of convention with just a few voice commands. For that reason it’s one of our most innovative gameplay features of 2012.

Coming from Kim Swift, the brains behind Portal, it should come as no surprise that Quantum Conundrum features a creative new feature. The game’s dimension mechanic sees players switch between realities - fluffy, heavy, slow and reverse gravity - each of which has its own unique characteristics. All you have to do is jump between then in order to reach the exit door of a room. Easy right? Well, no not really. Quantum Conundrum’s brain-twisting gameplay feature is a treat nevertheless.

When we reviewed Hitman: Absolution we fell head over heels in love with Contracts, the game’s customisable, asynchronous multiplayer mode. Allowing you to create your own hit scenario with which to challenge your friends, Contracts successfully promotes replayability without just slapping on an unnecessary Team Deathmatch mode, something other games have been all too eager to do. Contracts is huge, with a vast amount of options to choose from, meaning no scenarios too outlandish. Deep and inventive, Contracts mode is our most innovative gameplay feature of 2012.

This year has thrown up quite a few surprises, from the re-emergence of commercially unviable genres to unexpected new twists on established genres. Here’s the best examples from 2012.

A fantasy RPG from an arguably ailing Japanese publisher isn’t exactly the recipe for high expectations, especially coming so soon after Skyrim. Yet Dragon’s Dogma confounded expectations with its innovative Pawn system (in which you can share companions online and earn XP for their exploits), a fresh take on combat and... well, let’s be honest, watching an ally get grabbed by the shoulders and hoisted high into the air by a griffin is just plain awesome. Dragon’s Dogma is an unexpected delight.

True Crime was never the greatest of series. Under Activision’s guiding hand it established itself as a sometimes entertaining also-ran, a stop gap between better, more compelling releases. So when we heard that the publisher had abandoned True Crime: Hong Kong and that Square Enix had helped transform it into Sleeping Dogs, our expectations were low. But we were wrong. Our review called Sleeping Dogs “a stunning open-world action romp that draws on a variety of cinematic influences to startling effect.” A fitting tribute to a pleasant surprise.

Even the announcement of XCOM: Enemy Unknown was a surprise. We knew there was going to be an FPS version of the revered PC strategy series, but the turn-based reboot reveal came completely out of the blue. Yet the most surprising thing about XCOM is just how good it turned out to be and how completely it captured our imaginations. In a world where the immediate gratification of shooters dominate, XCOM demands patience and forethought. It’s a game where mistakes are punished by permanent death. It feels completely fresh. A triumph, XCOM is this year’s most joyful surprise.

Of course, the past year wasn’t all sweetness and light. Despite our high expectations,  there were games that just didn’t live up to hype. Here’s 2012’s biggest disappointments.

Earning a place on our disappointment of the year list isn’t about making a bad game. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is not a bad game. But by the lofty standards of Criterion - creators of Burnout: Paradise, the best open-world racing game in history - Most Wanted is indeed a disappointment. “Need for Speed: Most Wanted is let down by too few race types and a multiplayer mode with somewhat limited appeal," said our review. "Joyriding around Fairhaven can be fun, but there's simply too little real meat on Most Wanted's bones. Criterion can do and has done better."

With Medal of Honor our patience has now run out. Once an exciting and vital series, it has become an also-ran, a me-too shooter designed to hoover up any of the spare cash left behind by Call of Duty. Warfighter was a chance for a rejuvenation, bringing a supposedly realistic approach based on the input of real Tier 1 soldiers with combat experience. The results were underwhelming. A poor game, Medal of Honor: Warfighter is also a massive disappointment.

You can sense that Capcom wanted to get it right. Resident Evil 6 is one of the biggest, most ambitious, visually attractive games the Japanese outfit has ever produced. It has content designed to appeal to as broad an audience as possible. Yet in stretching so far,  Capcom fell well short, abandoning much of what makes the series great. Survival horror is now a distant, fuzzy memory. Resident Evil 6 could have been fantastic, but instead it’s our biggest disappointment of the year.

The talent behind the games we love, nobody is more important than the developers. This year has seen successes in a variety of different genres and styles, offering gamers a fantastic variety of experiences. Here’s who’s responsible for the very best.

Stepping into the shoes of Bungie and delivering the latest instalment of Microsoft’s flagship franchise must have been a daunting task, yet 343 Industries was up to the task. Not only did they produce a Halo game worthy of the name but they also provided compelling evidence that they have the skill to take it in exciting new directions. Halo 4’s peaen to Cortana was a fantastic achievement. The kings of Halo are dead. Long live the kings.

While other developers on this list released one remarkable title in 2012, Ubisoft Montreal shipped two. Assassin’s Creed III and Far Cry 3 are among the very best games of the year, displaying the kind of ambition and scope that very few have the talent, or the resources, to match. In their open worlds, their hunting and their vertical platforming, AC III and FC 3 are rather similar, but in execution they couldn’t be different. This is a behemoth of a developer performing at the top of its game.

Telltale has had quite a year. They revitalised the ailing fortunes of an entire genre. They created an adaptation that can stand tall with its source material. They delivered on the concept of episodic content where so many others have failed. They produced arguably the greatest video game narrative in the history of the medium. Oh and the did it all with just one game: The Walking Dead. Just one of these achievements would have been admirable. That the developer pulled it all off in one go is nothing short of miraculous. That’s why Telltale is our Developer of the Year 2012.

Publishers often get stick from the press. They’re the ones that cancel projects and play it safe and won’t give us what we want. But they’re also responsible for giving life to our favourite games. Here’s who we thought fared best this year.

For Ubisoft, the names should speak for themselves. Assassin’s Creed III, Far Cry 3, Rocksmith, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Trials Evolution, I Am Alive, The Expendables 2 and er... The Hop Hop Experience. The publisher turns out decent titles at a frightening rate. Some of them, like Far Cry 3. Trials Evolution and AC III are among the year’s very best. For that reason alone they should be celebrated. Congrats Ubi.

Square Enix is responsible for a couple of this year’s most high profile releases, in the form of Hitman: Absolution and Final Fantasy XIII-2. They also published one of the year’s most innovative experiences, Quantum Conundrum. But it’s Sleeping Dogs that has earned them a place as a runner-up in this year’s best publisher category. Sent to die by Activision, but reborn as an entirely new Square Enix franchise, Sleeping Dogs is testament to a publisher with a laudable quality: Belief.

Very few publishers are willing to make the kind of gambles that 2K is. Borderlands, on paper, is a risky proposition, quite unlike anything that has gone before, yet 2K has turned it into a successful franchise. Similarly, they gave Firaxis the time and resources needed to create XCOM, the best turn-based strategy title in recent years, a potentially foolhardy move considering the lack of the clout the genre has on consoles. Yet the gamble paid off. Even safer projects like NBA 2K13 shine, one of the best sports games of all time. Chuck in Spec Ops: The Line and The Darkness II and you’ve got a massively impressive slate of games. After a year of unparalleled excellence, 2K is our best publisher of the year.

This is what it’s all about. Here’s our pick for the very best game of the year, and a few words on the runners-up that pushed it so close.

With a clever plot, wonderfully implemented and varied gameplay and a uniquely characterful world, Dishonored’s revenge drama just oozes class. Let loose in a decadent steampunk world that’s crumbling into disrepair and skullduggery, your adventures as the supernatural assassin Corvo are wonderfully liberating. Encouraging freedom of expression in a game that displays the same? That’s why Dishonored is one of our best games of 2012.

Meanwhile, if you had of cornered us last year and said that a turn-based strategy title would almost win game of the year, we’d have laughed in your face. Yet here we are on the last day of 2012 announcing just that. It may be “the best strategy game this generation and possibly the best ever on consoles,” as our review said, but XCOM is also more than that. It’s one of the most challenging and rewarding titles we’ve played in recent years, a roaring success regardless of genre.

Some of this year’s games were more ambitious. Some were more innovative. Others had better graphics, soundtracks or storylines. But none entertained us so thoroughly as Far Cry 3. Every inch of Rook Islands is stuffed with adventures of your own making, unique tales of cunning, aggression and those weird ostrich things. And if you get bored of that (as if!), you can embark on the game’s main campaign, a loony romp encompassing huge imagined boss battles, Tomb Raider-esque puzzle solving and a hell of a lot of satisfying gameplay. Put simply, Far Cry 3 was fun. Really fun. That’s why it’s our Game of the Year 2012.

Quite a nice list, very glad to see Halo and The Walking dead up there with several awards ^-^.

Resi Evil 6 is a let down in allot of ways, but it can at least be said that it does a better job imo then Resi evil5, it at least tried to link it's self back, and had moments that where closer to the original's, though it's so very much agree'd, that the survival horror element is long gone.

At least with the series, there is now possibility for the survival horror element to easily come back. With 2 large scale outbreaks within the game occur, we could easily see the survival horror element return in side series, at the very least, I say bring back the 'Outbreak' sub series, with stronger story, keeping most of the game on melee weapons without stupid over the top moves.
Let's see if Capcom can see the potential to please the fans of the original titles, or misses it completely. Just get red of the dam miyan/native(what ever it was in 5), medieval level elements, and who the hell thought what resident evil was missing was a water level? >.>

Oh, and my last comment: Halo 4's OST may be the best selling game soundtrack of all time, but it will never, EVER beat the quality Halo 2 presented.

Miss ya, Marty.

can agree with almost all of these, halo 4 won 3 which is all good especially agree with best soundtrack since it fits perfectly in with the universe even though it's all new but the best multiplayer? my only problem with it is the kill cams, the kill cams seem to be extremely laggy all the time which just makes me think every time i die it's because of someone else lagging, if they removed them i would agree but until then to me there are so many better multiplayer games out there, i mean what was wrong with Reach where it focused on the man who just killed you but didn't show it from his point of view so it was always the best man won!

I dont understand why resident evil 6 gets so much hate. No it's not the best of the series but I believe it to be a strong game. black ops 2 was not all great but some of the other call of duty games weren't either.I understand why they are popular but I do not believe they should be recognized as these great games every year when in my opinion and many others ,so many other games trump it in the same year of release.

As much as I loved Halo 4, I'm sad to see it win 3 awards in a row, I personally think other games could have won at least 1 award out of the 3.
Also, hurray for Far Cry 3, Game of the Year! I played it through the New Years night.

No surprises: Walking Dead and Halo cleaned up. I would've preferred Trials for best arcade, but apart from that, I can't really argue.

Nice list, it's good to see The Walking Dead, Halo 4, and Dishonored sweep most of the awards.

I'm looking forward to some of 2013's games, mostly BioShock Infinite. I'm also curious for the release date of Watch Dogs, seeing as we haven't really received much news since its surprise show at E3 last year.

Really glad to see Halo 4 winning best score and graphics. While I enjoy the Multiplayer, many will argue otherwise unfortunately.

Resident Evil 6 was such a letdown, I'm completely down with that franchise. Good to see Ubisoft and 343 be runner ups for developers and lastly, I think Max Payne 3 should have won 'Best Story,' but that's just me.

Far Cry 3 is definitely worthy of GOTY, so I'm glad it won :)

I was wondering how long it would take for the generic and pointless digs at CoD to start in this article. Now I know...
OT: Happy TWD won as many awards as it did, and pleased with the GOTY. Not gonna lie, I've not got around buying Far Cry 3 yet, but from the gameplay I've seen in Let's plays... damn, I really should get around to it :)

Bollocks list, bollocks opinions, the bollocks contemporary face of the games industry.

Not surprising, but lamentable to see how thick the "average gamer" is.

I remember when gamers were outcasts and unpopular. A shame to see mass-marketed, neuro-linguistic opinions infect such a previously vibrant and truly creative industry. It's like the X Factor of gaming.

The Walking Dead was most certainly my GOTY, so I am extremely happy it won a few awards. It was one of those games that caused you to think about it days after you finished it. I usually sell the games that I complete the achievements for, but I can guarantee that The Walking Dead will stay on my shelf for a long, long time, and will never feel neglected.

Bah... this is the website awards i guess... not my personal choice. RE6 has biggest disapointement of 2012? Not so much. I mean you give the reason that survival horror is long gone... lol it was with RE5 easily... The game is a lot of fun, offers a lot of feature, a tremendous number of hours, when im done with it i would not be surprise to have put around 100 hours into it... wich is 10x what you would expect from a game like this, especially since its MP is NOT a key feature.

As for the rest, some i can agree, some i don't, but this make no logic that Farcry 3 win GOTY when it dosen't win in ANY other category... I can see why your generic COD of the year will not work GOTY, but Halo 4 with a SOLID campaign, Decent MP(enough to suits all kind of players) and great graphics.... should be worth GOTY. Got to admit i didn't picked Farcry, may one day, but i doubt it can be GOTY material... i mean its faircry THREE, and the first 2 more or less past as normal games thats it.

Probably not fair to say 343 hadn't worked with Halo before. They worked with Saber on CE: Anniversary as well as the Reach map packs. But I agree with the choice nonetheless!

Glad to see Halo 4 on there more than once. Also glad to not see Black Ops 2 on there for the most part. 343 did work on Combat Evolved Anniversary, and also took over Halo Reach matchmaking entirely in early March 2012, but this was probably the first real test they faced. They did well, but it wasn't completely new to them. They had a little experience and had many familiar faces when working on the game.

FC3 may have not won plenty of awards here, but that doesn't mean it's not GOTY material.

Halo 4's soundtrack is very distinguishable and great, with multiple artists backing it up. There's a reason it's the biggest game OST of 2012.

Far Cry 3's ominous chanting adds to the exhileration of the game, but it is clearly not as vibrant as Halo 4's pompous, sweeping soundtrack.

So what I'm saying is that while a game may outperform another in a single aspect, it doesn't mean that the underplayed game isn't consistant with its quality. Far Cry 3 doesn't stand out too much, save for Michael Mando's portrayal of Vaas. But it has a fantastic flow, all the gameplay, visuals, soundtrack, and story just work together to bring a game that just screams quality.

And the way I see it, folks out there loved and hated FC2, as much as people did with Bioshock 2. The original Far Cry drew players in with its graphics, and is sort of looked at as the father of FPS games on a tropical island setting. Far Cry 1 probably had some inspiration on the development of Dead Island.

@47 True that!

Not a good list at all. Very disappointed in this site's choices this year.

Halo 4 and walking dead are good games not great ones. Shouldn't have gotten as many awards as they did.

And Assassin's Creed 3 and Borderlands 2 should have gotten awards way better games.

@47: A game doesn't have to excel in just one thing. It can be a great all-rounder and win because of that. A football team can win more games or score more goals than another, yet finish beneath them.

Far Cry 3 was not a game I enjoyed much, but Dishonored had been my favorite game and beat 3 times during the course of 2-3 weeks. I thought Far Cry 3 was too easy for my taste, and I encountered glitches that stopped me from wanting to play. I will commend Dishonored, but lift my nose at FC3. Hitman I would like to try now that I heard about creating your own contracts? Sounds awesome! ^^

@52 yes, you are a right. A good all rounder might be better, but Far Cry only came runner up to Dishonored in Best Premise, Dishonored also picked up New Franchise (which, yes Far Cry was inelligible for), yet somehow is then runner-up to Far-Cry for Best Game.

Hal4 won Best Graphics, MP and score... while I might not think it is GoTY, that sounds to me like Halo should have it pretty much sewn up, yet not even nominated.

In short, I am not agreeing or disagreeing with the award per se, rather I don't really understand how they arrived at the decision as they did.

@54: Well, let's have a look at the competition that it overcame.

First there's XCOM, a GOTY runner-up and winner of Biggest Surprise. Blatantly because strategy games on consoles are rarely above average. And because it's obviously a good game. I haven't played it yet, but strategy games tend to have a lack of variety. Personally I love them (especially Age of Empires II), but they tend to be more of a habit/addiction in the end. Far Cry 3 on the other hand has stacks more variety and is more easily accessible (remember, we're in an era where stealth & strategy gamers are considered hardcore because of the patience needed to play them)

Dishonoured (I don't care, I'm English) was obviously a major contender and it was probably very close between this and Far Cry 3. Whilst it is blatantly a quality game though, Far Cry 3 seems to have that 'larger than life' fun factor that a lot of games tend to miss the mark with. A little too much can spoil it and too little can make it a tad too boring at times.

As for the rest, it could be argued that they are 'lesser' sequels or too much of the same. To me, it looks as if Far Cry 3 has taken the best from two good games to create an awesome game, with a surprising burst of sweet flavouring thrown in for good measure. Hell, even the vibrant colours make it much more attractive than many of today's rather dull-looking offerings (good graphics doesn't exactly equal beauty)

Then again, I've only played three games from 2012, so my argument is invalid.

After a couple episodes of walking dead, I thought it was ok, but nothing close to what anyone describes it as. I'm sad so many's gory is a game that wouldn't have been given a second look if not for the fact it shares a name with an incredibly popular Ty and comic series. Can't help but feel like that's the only reason it won.

I agree with most of the selections, I'm a little biased on a few, but the only list I feel passionate enough to make a statement/vote for out loud is:

* Disappointment of the Year - Ghost Recon: Future Soldier *

GRFS has gotta be the "winner" of this distinction, doesn't it? We waited THIS long for THAT?! And they continuously and repeatedly built our expectations higher and higher, in spite of delay after delay.

Yeah okay, multi-player was alright, but the Campaign absolutely BLEW... and not in a good way. Ubisoft's entire Tom Clancy Team has clearly lost their mojo.

Not to be the butthurt Yank here, but your description for AC3 in the "Best Premise" category came off as a bit....dickish. Are you kidding with the Feudal Japan thing? Japanese constructs in that time period weren't very........scalable. And Victorian London, while far better than the previous suggestion, is still a bit "meh". Yes, London was far larger than any of the colonies at that point in time, but the rich, virgin histories of colonial Boston, New York and Philadelphia, from a historically significant outlook, far outweigh those of Victorian London. I get this site is ran by Brits and what-not, but the majority of your userbase, as with gamers in-general, 'are' Americans. Maybe try not being so harsh with the wording next time?

I hate to be the opposition, but The Walking Dead is not GOTY material. If only a good story was needed for a good game, Metal Gear Solid 2 would be the greatest game of all time. The point and click game makes for an archaic experience, like I was playing the original Alone in the Dark. I'd have to argue its appropriateness for Arcade game of the year, shouldn't Minecraft, with its five MILLION copies sold, take the cake?

My runners-up would be Dishonored, Max Payne 3, Hitman: Absolution and Borderlands 2.

But for real, go pick up X-Com! Even if you don't like RTS games, I didn't and I think it's absolutely amazing.

Also, why is "Walking Dead" even on the lists? It isn't a game. It's interactive narrative. Everything is prescripted. There's no gameplay elements. No challenges to overcome. It is "select proper item to use with person/item/location and it'll usually work unless the programmers decide it doesn't." Much of the plot elements are complete contrivances as well. I only played the first chapter of it and to this day CAN NOT figure out how a WOMAN WITH A GUN doesn't SHOOT the zombie GRABBING ONLY HER ANKLE. And if you use the logic "gun is out of bullets" then why isn't she HITTING THE ZOMBIE with it? I can see how one guy is immobilized... I don't understand how she was. "Oh crap! A zombie grabbed my ankle! I need to stare really hard at the guy across the room from me and try to plead with him for help even though I could obviously solve this myself! Surely yelling across the room for help is a better solution than bashing the skull of this zombie in!"

If the rest of the "game" is like that, it shouldn't get any awards.

I don't hate on The Walking Dead as a TV series. In fact, I quite enjoy it. But honestly, it's no more a game than any of those games that just carry you from cutscene to cutscene with no thought involved. It's a game in the same way that the Mass Effect thing was a "game" in which all you did was choose your decisions if you hadn't played the previous games to the franchise. That's it. It's a game in the same was that little thing for Dead Space 2 was a game in which you could earn some nice little treasures from simply choosing one option or the other.

The Walking Dead isn't a game. It's simply a hand-holding exercise in which you compare choices. Honestly, much easier to do this from YouTube. It doesn't cost you money from there. Granted, you don't get achievements... But, the point stands. I don't like the idea of paying for achievements.

GOTY....down to FC3 and MP3 for me....halo doesn't deserve shit...grats to walking dead...i hate that game genre normally but that game was impressive for me.

i saw this coming with halo 4....but i'd switch it's place with RE6, at least RE6 is still in my collection...halo 4 is pretty crap after one playthrough...multiplayer was ok, but it's more of the same.

at least Max Payne's MP was something fresh. (had a much better soundtrack too, IMHO)

@75...i'd normally agree with ya, but since i don't play point and click games usually, it was a nice surprise to see i cared about the characters in TWD more than i do in most games that spend hours and hours trying to achieve the same effect.

to end my post i say get over Resident Evil not being survival horror anymore...it's the natural progression of the plot (a complete, weaponized virus that can be deployed on a large scale...nothing 'spooky' about that.

What is still scary about RE, however, is that i believe it is humanity's destiny to somehow eradicate themselves in a similar fashion.

the only way Capcom could really ruin RE, is buy Canonizing that garbage movie series.

Did you guys seriously just use "ambitious" to describe Far Cry 3 and AC3? They follow the post-GTA sandbox formula TO THE LETTER and present very little beyond that in terms of open world appeal. In fact, the both games brought pretty much identical changes to their respective franchises (like shitty hunting and hiding in waist-high grass. FC 3 even incorporated AC's overly scripted climbing and close combat) to the point that their main distinguishing differences are their setting and perspective. AC3 has a less appealing version of the series' well-known traversal that has been the sole justification for its shallow open world full of collectibles and petty side activites and FC3 carried over a few of the dynamic elements of its predecessor with some RPG additions that might be acceptable in a browser MMO and one of the most obnoxious story campaigns I have played in quite a while (complete with an awful plot). The "fun" factor of those games may vary from person to person, but nothing about their design is in ANY way ambitious. Far Cry 3 is one of the most blatantly derivative games of 2012.

Far Cry 3 definitely is GOTY Material. The Graphics were amazing and most sandbox appeal to me because of how open the gameplay is. Not having to continuously do missions back to back is what made me love it. But I do have to say that I wish the Co-op Campaign had a better story line and wasn't so repetitive.

@75 I totally agree with you. The Walking Dead wasn't fun for me at all. I like the game 'Heavy Rain' which had decisions and action events, but The Walking Dead was nothing like that at all. I guess I guess I was expecting better.

Apparently a TWD game is being made based off the show. That I might play.

When I see "The Walking Dead" as a game, I kind of expected something like the Mass Effect franchise. No, I don't mean running around a galaxy shooting machines. I expected dialogue trees and decisions to be on par with Mass Effect. I didn't expect every decision to be so obvious or to only HAVE two decisions at each juncture. You could've made characters interesting and/or likable (which I didn't find either of in just the first chapter... I'm supposed to completely fall in love with Clemantine because... Well, it's a little kid. I don't automatically assign "parental caring" to a child just because it's a child. The fact that she was caring for herself for several days before you ever arrived... And then suddenly CAN'T care for herself once you take her under your wing... That's pretty poor character writing right there). I didn't want to hate The Walking Dead as a game... The problem is... It's just not a game. I've played "Point and click" adventures before. Myst and Riven come to mind. Granted you don't need brain-destroying puzzles to make a game... But a good story is told in those games, there are things to accomplish, obstacles to overcome, freedom of exploration... The Walking Dead has none of that. It's about discovering what the Programmers wanted you to do next and then doing it to progress the plot.

Honestly, you could've made it a bit like "Mass Effect" with all the dialogue trees and perhaps even with movement and combat. I don't mean throw a million zombies at me and I try to shoot them all down and win... I mean it could've been more dynamic as a game. A dialogue tree would've let players not just ask a single question, but multiple questions. Perhaps I wanted to ask more than I did of a survivor, but once I asked my initial question, all questioning was cut off. Why?

Maybe I'm just spoiled by games who do everything The Walking Dead does... Only sixty billion times better... And by games that ARE games... Not interactive narratives.

I am aware this day and age there ae man 'gaming snobs' such as yourself Who are you to say TWD is not a game. I play mainly only AAA titles and i found TWD to be as much of a game as any other, which emotionally involves the player to make decisions based on emotion. Not shitty hack and slash games like AC3 where I didn't care about one of the characters at all, or COD where i wish the stupid yank would get a bullet to the head.

If you think Mass Effect had choice then i am amazed. BLUE RED GREEN. lol what a great choice and consequence that game provides. TWDmakes you think about your choices much more than any game i have played recently, including all the Mass Effect or Dragon Age games which pride themselves on choice and consequence. RED BLUE GREEN LOL!!

Most games follow the same format nowadays, and i was completely blown away by the quality of an outdated genre (point and click) and cell shaded graphics which are low quality, i was blow away at the quality of the entire game.

Also with a gamertag such as 'yougotowned12' who the FUCK gives a shit about your opinion kid? LOOOOOL play some COD ''dudebro'' PWNED PWNED PWEND. Grow up son.

I'm going to back up @78 on his Mass Effect Claim. Sure the ending of Mass Effect 3 wasn't that great but the ending of ME3 doesn't have anything to do with the first two games and the gameplay of the third. Also in Assassin's Creed you care about Desmond you don't need to care about anyone else in the game besides the main character.
E.G.- In the Walking Dead everyone dies, that is a sh*tty ending. That is why I was mad when everyone dies at the end of Far Cry 3, but it was a good game.

So does the ending make the game...NO.

What? Far Cry 3 doesn't win one award, but wins game of the year? No sense at all.

@81, what about people reading this who haven't finished those games and you just ruined the ending to two games???? A terminal illness fits well with you.

@83, well...everyone either everyone lives or everyone dies in Far Cry 3, but I don't care about the ending being ruined in any game.

Can't believe Dishonored won anything, that game was such a piece of shit and an ultimate let down from mighty Bethesda. Best premise definitely not Best new Franchise even more not.

Then you obviously do not play games for the story so your opinion is void.
If you enjoy games for the gameplay only then you miss out on so much more as videogames are the ultimate medium for storytelling as you are involved with the characters by interacting with them.
You are not a true gamer. Just one of these fly-by-night casuals us true gamers all hate. Now suck on stick of radium please.

You need to add the categories: Best sports game of the year, best racing game of the year, best RPG, best FPS, etc.

Whilst ive not played Farcry ( any version ) I have to say XCOM was a blast and a very nice 'break' from the norm.

Turn based combat along with basic resource management gets my vote, nice game from start to finish, not to easy and replay value .. woohoo

Listen, I played The Walking Dead, I loved the Walking Dead, it deserved the awards it was given.

But not best story, Spec Ops: The Line is the greatest story I have ever experienced in a game in my entire life. It overwhelmed me and left me numb for days. I still can't play shooters the same way, it's affected me on a deeper level than I ever thought possible.

"In any other year Spec Ops: The Line would have won"

Fuck that. It's not fair to other games that Tell Tale's point-and-click video game is compared to a true video game, the mediums are not even the same. If I can play a game with one hand it's nothing more than an extended cutscene (a very good one i'll admit) but it's not a true video game that has you constantly engaged and challenged.

Spec Ops was ROBBED.

I'm still mentally trapped in Dubai for crying out loud.

To me the biggest surprise of the year was Dark Siders2, and then best story was Max Payne3.

Gotta agree that Spec Ops beats Walking Dead for story. I loved both games, but one is a new idea, one a spin off. Also just picked up Far Cry 3, it's blown me away. Not played BLOPS since! Thank you for doing what I had hoped Resi 6 or MoH would do - give me something new to enjoy! My favs of the year are Far Cry, Spec Ops, Sleeping Dogs. Turkeys were Resi 6, Warfighter and BLOPs. No opinion on Halo 4 not played it, never finished Reach or Anniversary as got bored of them. Might have to give Dishonoured a try.

I don't know that I agree with Resident Evil 6 being the biggest disappointment I think Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City was the biggest letdown personally. I was not a gamer in the late 1990s as I was a little kid then, but some of my older friends where teenagers in the late 1990s when Resident Evil first came out and they loved it with good reason to without Resident Evil not only would the Survival Horror genre be what it is but also the modern third person shooter genre wouldn't be what it is now. They expected Operation Raccoon City to be a nostalgic trip down memory lane of the original RE games but it was anything but. Honestly it felt like Army of Two with two more players on the screen and the RE backstory, no offense to the Army of Two fanbase its easily one of the co-op games out there. But Raccoon City gahh what a waste of 60 dollars I am completing the Achievement list just so I get something out of paying for it. RE 6 at least was ambitious with the multiple campaigns+bonus content and it sort of started back on the path of Survival Horror. Nice to see 343s efforts recognized Halo 4 was awesome! I'll have to check out Far Cry and Walking dead looks pretty good...

@97 - No-one said that. We expected nothing from RE:ORC, it delivered that. We expected a lot from RE6, it didn't even come close to that.

Not to sound rude, but I really wish people would stop complaining how Resident Evil has changed so much. If you look at most game series, change is everywhere. Everything changes, except war...war never changes.

I agree #91 Spec Ops:the line was robbed,The Walking dead is cool but as an arcade game should have a seperate category.Halo 4 is awesome-i'm not a halo fanboy either, hated Reach-but 343 did an awesome job.
My game of the year is without a doubt Dishonored.Farcry 3 is struggling to hold my attention 3/4 of the way through,Borderlands 2 was a let-down TBH prefered the original. All things considered not a bad round-up.

Still waiting for The Walking Dead to be released over here. I really liked Spec Ops & Max Payne for their story lines - Sleeping Dogs was good but the whole time I was playing, I had that feeling that is was missing something though after finishing the game I'm still not sure what that 'something' is...

Dishonored is the most overrated game of 2012 by far. It's a fairly good game but I don't think it's even close to GOTY material.
