| Probably the best game in the Playstation 2 era, although Vice city was a close second. Defintely the most fun! I loved going to get 8 ball to rig up my car with something special, causing a traffic jam and then watching as the magic happened! :-) |

This is one of those games that I got deeply into as well. But I know that this wasn't THE game that got me into all of gaming. I can't seem to pinpoint that ONE game that got me extremely hooked (moreso than just taking an interest in playing every so often), but some honorable mentions are games like Super Mario RPG (when I was younger) and the first Metal Gear Solid. |

| I'd go a bit further and say that the games released in 2001 changed me as a gamer. The PS2 saw Twisted Metal: Black (my personal favorite of the series), Gran Turismo 3, Grand Theft Auto III, and Metal Gear Solid 2. My PS2 was primarily a DVD player at that point. I didn't give it a ton of attention since I played games mostly on my PC. Those four games, GT3 and GTA3 especially, switched that around. |

I to hadn't played a game for a while.(sonic 2 being the last game I really spent any time with) girls, beer, studying and general life just got in the way. - must of been early 2002, I had a bit of spare cash and I remember Game doing a 'criminal pack' which included a PS2 with GTA 3, Max Payne and State of emergency. I fondly remember that week for bringing me back to the world of games. What a week, What a game. Happy Aniversery GTA. |

| This game changed the gameing universe forever. I can't even begin to express how much this game means to me, for what it has not only done to the gameing universe, but for me personally. This is why people hate GTA4 so much, GTA3 had such an impact on the gameing universe, and its sequals continued to do so until GTA4. When something means so much to you, and then someone goes and begins to ruin it, you would take it very personal to. Thus why GTA4 will always be a failure in most peoples minds. |

This paved the way for the playstation era in my life, until gta 4 on the 360. Crazy how certain games sway you into buying a system isnt it. |

Now if only Rockstar would do something more than just re-release the game for the damned iPad to celebrate. PSN and Xbox Live are sitting right there in front of Rockstar being ignored in favor of some tablet with sloppy touch screen controls that will never be as responsive as a nice trusty controller. WTF. @3: No, no you won't be playing it properly on iOS. |

| Before Grand Theft Auto III there was only one game I could rely on for a sand-box type game. That game was Driver 2 for the original Playstation. Imagine going from Driver 2 to GTA III. Yeah it friggin blew my mind, and I spent about 200 hours on it. I enjoyed reading this article. I just bought the GTA series on Steam before it went on sale for $50. Still a good deal but now Steam is practically giving them away for the 10 year anniversary. I suggest you purchase them and have another round in Liberty, and Vice. |

| I remember playing this for the first time. Absolutely mind-blowing! I first played it over at a friend's house and after I had left I ran straight home and told my mother that all I wanted for Christmas was a PS2 and GTA III. I got my wish, though the PS2 didn't work and I had to wait until the next day to play GTA 3. I don't like the game as much anymore, as Vice City spoiled me, but I'll always remember falling in love with GTA - more, as I did love the first 3 games - from that moment on. One line that has stayed with me forever was spoken in this game, right at the end of the bridge at the beginning (in my case); "My mother's my sister!". |

| the game that really defined my gaming career was Age of empires 3. Before then id owned and sold the N64 and playstation 2 couldn't get into them. But i tried the trial of age of empires 3 and thought awesome, i actually turned out to be one of the best at the treaty mode which was released with the war chiefs add on. Ironically it became that difficult to get a game which led me to buy an xbox. The game which then turned me into the achievement hunter i am today was bioshock. Its now come full circle with my addiction to age of empires online now with achievements!!!! I do miss the treaty from age of empires 3 but, the micro managing in economy and the epic 3 hour battles ill never forget! I missed so much uni for that game! AOE 3 i also happened to meet one of my best mates, who i now play every co op game with even though i live in Perth and he lives in Melbourne. |

Ok, so i was about 6 or 7 when this came out and i remember my parents always supervising what i watched (protective at the time), so i would go to my uncles every weekend to play a game where a kid's imagination could go off the charts! this game was ground-breaking! Who else thinks they should incorporate : -Gas for cars (buying gas) - Pilot's License - the health of the character (refer to San Andreas) - multiple story changing decisions - potentially aging, being sick, different effects on the character. Reply with your thoughts :) |

| A lot of gamers seem to underestimate how GTA III transformed the gaming industry, at least in the US. It wasn't the first sandbox style game, but it was the first to be noticed, and it paved the way for other open-world games. Without it, American games, even ones with completely different themes and styles (thinking of Oblivion/Fallout3) wouldn't be the same. |

| GTA III had such a huge impact on the industry, and on us as gamers. Well, those of us who are old enough to have played it at the time. The open world, sandbox style gameplay it introduced has had ripples that extended far beyond its genre of game. I will think of it every time I hear "Mi Bambino Caro" for as long as I live. One of the greatest and most influential games of all time. |

I'm ashamed to admit that I have never played GTA III, even though I have family members who have it. Anyway, the games that really got me into gaming are: 1. Pokémon Red: I had an NES with Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt as a young boy, but this was the first game that really hooked me into its world. I remember yelling in joy when a Pokémon started evolving. 2. Super Smash Bros. Melee: What the first game started, this one perfected. This was the first game that I ever played competitively. It wasn't on an MLG or professional level, mind you. However, this and the next game on the list are the main reasons why I'm a competitive gamer. 3. Halo: Combat Evolved: Seriously, what can I say about this game that hasn't been said by others thousands of times over? This was my first real FPS experience, as the popular N64 shooters were ones I never owned or played. The game was mind-blowing at the time, and this was when I was approaching the age of ten and thus had no idea of what the game would become in the competitive community. My parents took the game away from me due to its M rating, so I didn't really get to play and appreciate Halo: CE and Halo 2 in with this again until I became a teenager shortly before Halo 2 came out. 4. Skies of Arcadia: Legends: This game got me hooked into my other favorite genre, RPGs. I don't even remember how I got it, but this became my favorite game for a long time. I used to write down every single piece of information that I could possibly need to know on a piece of paper, which I consulted throughout the game. That alone speaks volumes to how much sheer content is in this game. 5. Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword (No subtitle in English): This game holds a special place in my heart, as it fostered a love of all things strategy for me. The main reason is less to do with the game itself and more to do with the people I've met and become friends with as a result of discussing it. And thus, the final entry on the list is . . . 6. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind: As Skies of Arcadia: Legend made me a fan of Japanese RPGs, Morrowind made me a fan of Western RPGs. All of my interest in Mass Effect, Fallout, and so forth all began here. That I still mock the old man who asks for your astrological sign so many years later should show how much this game has stuck with me. If you've made it through my wall of a post, I commend you. Thanks for reading. |

Damn I was 12 when it came out. That and MGS2 were the games that I played first on a PS2. Now that was awesome. GTA 3 is by far my favourite GTA to date. Can still pretty much picture the whole first island in my head. Didn't have a memory card when I first got it, so played through up until you get to the 2nd island like every day. So awesome :D Should absolutely be re-released with Cheevo's. Don't know if I'd want them to remake it as they'd just go and transplant III into the IV engine and I'd rather shoot myself in the ballsack than that happen. |

Nice read Webb, very insightful and well written. Ive still got quite a few problems of my own and i to am a similar age to yourself. Although having never fell out of gaming i have been through many times where ive been bored of it or fell out of love for a bit and just not finding it fun. I agree with GTAIII, i never fully got into it when it first released but when it was released in the double pack for the old box i liked it much more. Its easily the most fun GTA ive played excluding to top down games. Anyway, thanks for sharing webb, always nice to read articles like this. |

| I remember hearing someone talking about a game where they had sex with a prostitute, then killed her and took their money back. I couldn't believe someone could think of something like that, but that was the beauty of GTA III. Some of the craziest ideas you could think of you could bring to reality in this game. One of my best memories was being frustrated with finding a nice car like the banshee, then getting it jacked from me by some random AI. The solution; go to 8 ball and rig that sucker to blow. The satisfaction of seeing the perp getting blown up while trying to take my car was the best. |

Webb, one thing I want to say this that this company, DMA who developed a game called Body Harvest for N64 started it all. Did you know that DMA Design Ltd. became to the game developer known as Rockstar North? Personally for me, Body Harvest is the one made me the gamer I am today. You can take a look at this link about Rockstar North's history, it even mentioned about Body Harvest's play mechancism influence over GTA series. The truth is if it wasnt for Body Harvest, we wouldn't have GTA III. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockstar_North |

ive been hooked on games since the very 1st computer game i played many many moons ago.. it was on the old amstrad home computer and it was only one of those budget £1.99 games "harrier jump jet" i think it was called, flying a plane in the skies, dodging other planes while trying to drop bombs on the ships.. i was in heaven. well.. that was it, that very next xmas i had badgered my mum and dad enough.. they got me my first computer a spectrum 128k +2.. and so it began and has never stopped. happy 10th GTA3.. cheers |

Fuck I can't believe its been 10 years already! I remember when I was 10 years old when this came out for the first time. And I remember watching gameplay on it, but my dad didn't let me get it :( So I had to go to my best friends house every day begging to play for hours, then eventually they let me buy it. I thought the 3rd one was easily the game to get me into everything to, besides Halo 2. |

I haven't played a lot of classic PS2 games. I was 15 when it came out and for some reason I hated FPS and Open World games back then. Who knows why. |

| not all its cracked upto really, games like tomb raider and grand theft auto just get a lucky break from extra advertisement and people attach onto it and then they end up becoming so called classic games.yes i have bought every tomb raider, played about a level and gave up.had every grand theft auto, even psp games yet never got past about 20% in a grand theft auto before moving onto another game.this is far from the best game on the ps2,that would have to be onimusha dawn of dreams. onimusha is the series that really needs a remake rather than the rubbish they keep remaking for ps3 or even xbox 360, sly trilogy, what even is sly, zone of enders ,never heard of it.metal gear solid trilogy doesnt even include the original which is the only one ever worth playing.i would like to see a hd remake of grand theft auto, any game would do.id buy it but as usual probably not play it for long.this game was a big change for the gaming market and brought about even better games like saints row now onto its third instant classic |

| grand theft auto 3 certainly made me who i am, it was the pioneer of my gaming start in 2001, this was one of the best games i played, i love playing the sega megadrive, and ps1, and when the ps2 came out then i went crazy, the games started getting graphicly better, as this is a fine example, i just hope rockstar keep up with the series and dont end it after the 6th or so, i hope V will make the NO.1 best selling game in the whole entire industry! |

I was 12 when this bad boy came out, I remember skipping school just to play this game time and time again. Really kept me hooked as a gamer through high school, I no longer have a PS2 so I can't play this classic anymore, and my PC can't handle anything from after the PS1 in terms of games. Reading this brought back fond memories. |

The first game I can remember playing for hours on end without making any story or character progression at all, just simply roaming the city in a Banshee seeing how many pedestrians I was allowed to kill until the police would notice. *sigh* All those hours of my life i'll never get back... Wouldn't change them for anyhting else! Here's to you, Grand Theft Auto 3 - and the hope that, one day, I can play you and see the words "Achievement Unlocked" at the same time. |

Working for the mafia was the greatest. The Mafia Sentinal was incredible. From the glitches (I loved driving around in the indestructible limo) to the cheats to just overall great game play, this game was truly an all star. |

I was 16 when this game out and what I recall more than anything is that I was more interested in driving around this large game world then I was the real world. Although I have to say the game that really got me into spending hours upon hours on games was Ocarina of Time. Sure it wasn't as "sandboxy?" as GTA III but I probably spent a handful of hours just riding from place to place on the horse and a good chunk just fishing for the hell of it |

| The game got me into gaming was Resident Evil 3. I played the shit out of that game! But I bought the ps2 specifically for GTA3. I think I've put hours into that series than any other games I've played combined. If anyone of importance from Rockstar is reading this I too would pay damn good money for you to get some HD collection going. Get the 'stories' games going too as they were solid also in my opinion. |

I stopped playing when my then 3 year old wiped out my 99+ hour unfinished save of FF 7 and didn't come back until I watched a friend play COD 4 on a 50 inch plazma, and have been playing ever since. I remember both those days well. Man how things have changed over the years. |
