Microsoft's Game Room: The Who, What, When, Where, Why

Earlier on this week we reported that Microsoft at CES 2010 in Las Vegas announced their latest addition to Xbox Live would be coming in the spring, something they like to call Game Room. After gathering information from fact sheets, numerous sources around the web and Microsoft themselves, let us weigh up how the service works, what you can expect to see on it and more importantly, how much it will cost you.

Created by Krome Studios (Scene It? Box Office Smash, Viva Pinata Party Animals), Game Room is quite simply a virtual arcade for your 360 avatar that will allow you to relive the glory days of the traditional amusement arcade without the horrific smells, low level lighting and creepy attendant looking at your junk and what not. The service will be available this coming spring and will also allow you to gain access to it from your Windows Live PC as well... so when you’re meant to be working at work, you could effectively be spending your pay cheque before you’ve even earnt it.

Microsoft bills their latest innovation “as a customized social space for your Avatar inspired by the nostalgic arcades of the 70s, 80s, and 90s.” Your Game Room is said to be a fully customisable environment allowing you to arrange your cabinets, introduce animated mascots, decorate each room with themes and animated icons from your favourite games whilst all the time adding to it and building your collection with new titles every week. You can even invite your Xbox Live friends over or you can visit your friend's personal amusement arcades, but only if they invite you of course. Whether you can play on their games if you don’t own them though seems doubtful as the fact sheet for the platform states, “You can even invite friends into your custom arcade to check out your collection or visit their “game room” to demo games and scope out additions to your collection.” Although that was expected, considering the same mantra applies to things like Sky - if you don't own it, you can't access it. If you have no Xbox Live friends, how about inviting your real friends around and let them get involved, taking advantage of the two player “Couch Mode” where you can show off your silky skills.

Wait... so it’s like PlayStation’s Home? Well, Microsoft responded to that point before anyone even had the chance to bring it up. According to Microsoft, “PlayStation Home separates you from your games and entertainment, while “Game Room” allows you to enjoy classic games while you’re being social. Think of “Game Room” as an interactive and social place where everyone from new gamers to pros can re-live the glory days of the classic arcade.”

The Game Room will boast universal leaderboards across the platform, the ability to challenge friends and even taunt them (even if they’re on the PC and you’re on the 360), ranked play and challenge play. Good news Silver members, the Game Room will be available to you also, and, yes, there will be achievements. How they’ll pan out though remains to be seen, but you’d have thought that they’d adopt the traditional 12 achievements, 200 points max Xbox Live Arcade policy.

At launch the Game Room will feature 30 original arcade and console classics in the virtual hub and the service will add new games to the platform every week. The service is said to be receiving so many games over the next three years that come the end of that three year time period, the Game Room will feature over 1000 arcade games. According to Kotaku, the 30 29 of those 30 launch titles are:

18. Armor Battle (Intellivision)
19. Space Hawk (Intellivision)
20. Sub Hunt (Intellivision)
21. Sea Battle (Intellivision)
22. Space Armada (Intellivision)
23. Star Raiders (Atari 2600)
24. Outlaw (Atari 2600)
25. Yar's Revenge (Atari 2600)
26. Millipede (Atari 2600)

How does this differ from the Xbox Live Arcade you ask? Well Microsoft stated that whilst the "Xbox Live Arcade features re-stylized versions of classic games, “Game Room” stays true to the old-school arcade, and features only original versions.” So don’t expect any flashy upgrades, the Game Room is strictly old skool! And by old skool, if you look at the launch titles, we mean real old skool.

As with a lot of things these days, the price is always going to play a huge part and that will also factor in here. The price plan is as follows:

It is free to access your personal arcade in Game Room.
If you want to play a game on both the Xbox 360 and a Windows PC, you can purchase a game for 400 Microsoft points ($5).
If you want to play a game on either the Xbox 360 or a Windows PC, you can purchase a game for 240 Microsoft points ($3).
You can also pay to play a single game (just like in an amusement arcade) which will cost you 40 Microsoft points ($0.50) a go.

With its impressive support and the backing Microsoft is giving the service (1,000 games in 3 years, which is about 6 or 7 new games a week), gamers will never be short of a game to play on the platform. Whether that’s enough though is an entirely different question. With Game Room, Microsoft are trying to recapture the glory days of the amusement arcades, but doing so from the comfort of your couch doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as huddling round an arcade cabinet with your closest friends did, all those years ago. Despite that, the service is actually quite intriguing and looks to add another selling point to not just the 360, but to the Gold Membership as well.

There is definitely still a market for retro gaming, that’s a cert, but it’s a niche market and to enjoy the service and all it will offer, it looks like you’ll have to be ready to spend a ton of cash on it. I’m sure amongst the 1,000 plus titles though, there will be something for everyone and maybe, just maybe, you can finally scratch that retro itch you’ve been trying to reach for all these years. For retro gaming addicts, get the cheque book ready, the boys from Redmond are on their way round.

	...to be honest...awesome. I actually like this idea. First one in a LOOOOONG ass time. Just hoping they throw some of the titles I grew up on in here, as I don't recognize 3/4's of what is on that list. Hopefully more kick ass 2600 games and old school cabinets. :D

	I'd be fine if it did. I don't buy much from the marketplace, but for those who do, they shouldn't complain about paying for stuff for this game room if they frequently buy arcade games already. Especially if your existing list of already purchased games can be added too. I already got kof98 and mvc2, and with the upcoming kof2002 and neo geo battle colosseum, it be cool to be able to set those up.

	I like it, but sounds a little pricey. Of course, that's the whole point though. We pay to get entertained, right? I'll buy some of these games for sure, not many though, because practically the only games I grew up playing were on a Nintendo system, and there's DEFINITELY not going to be Metroid, or The Legend of Zelda on here.

	sadly, we won't get any nintendo release... unless Rare surprise us with... Killer Instinct Arcade? that'll be a good reason to spend some MS Points :P but personally, I'll get some games for sure... to remember my childhood lol

	I still have fond memories of Sea Battle. Also almost every other source I've seen says this is free for Gold or Silver subscribers, so everyone can enjoy some old school glory. They also said they wouldn't be adverse to putting up games from more recent consoles, like the Dreamcast. I could be mistaken though. And did anyone notice Kotaku lists Astrosmash twice?? lol

	Webb, Game Room is not limited to Gold only, Silver can use it too. Game Room doesnt use online multiplayer, so no use locking people out.

	Fantastic idea ruined by god awful prices. How about a 5$ monthly subscription? Thats reasonable if you want to compete with classic game programs. But no, Micro$oft is nowhere near reasonable. Trust me, a 5$ a month thing would earn them way more than they ever hope to with this crap

	@28 doesn't mean you shouldn't check them out, you might enjoy them! If you think about this, compared to what people used to actually pay at arcades, the prices ain't so bad. If you're not fussed about playing it on your PC (personally I'm not but I'm sure some people are), then it's effectively 3 dollars to own one of these, right? That's 6 goes at 50 cents, and 50 cents to play one of these in the comfort of your own home is okay, I guess. But 3 dollars to own one? Sure, I'll pay that for a game I know I'll like!

	this is more accessable than MAME, for most people. Yes MAME is "free" and you can get the games you really want, but lets face it, they layman gamer isnt gonna know about MAME or how to get it running etc, so this is actually an excellent idea from MS.

	The early Atari stuff doesn't do it for me, but providing perfect ports of late-80s and 90s arcade(-exclusive!) games has potential. I'm thinking classic Sega stuff like Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder (1992) for example.

	Not up their buuuutttttttt, Pole Position & Joust = FTW I wounder if they'll implement use of an external steering wheel for games like Pole Position & Off Road? 	they just need to bring more better games out for xbla, old snes games like mario and zelda, i'd pay 800 points for them but these super old games shouldn't get a memory eating room to play them, these should be like 50-80 points same as indie games cause most indie games are better than the classic anyways #40 good call on dizzy games

	@47 that would be great we will just get in touch with licensing, yes hello Nintendo can we borrow mario and zelda? What your a major competitor to us and have a rival game console out? Great idea. Im sure Nintendo will be willing to give up their main character throughout all of history. If you want to play those games just get an emulator and rom for free.

	-knuckle bumps #43- Man I wish Sega would give Revenge of Death Adder a port. I would pay $50 for it to have on-line co-op and achievements. I also agree this needs more late 80s/early 90s games. I started playing in 89 with stuff like Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Final Fight, NARC, and eventually games like Sunset Riders, Pit Fighter, and Aliens (which won't get ported with X-Men, Alien vs. Predator, the Punisher, the Simpsons or any other licensed game sadly). I also want to see less console games. You guys can buy a SNES or Dreamcast and whatever game you want for like $35 total while some of these arcade games have never been ported and deserve a chance to be played again!

	If my current arcade game can be turned into cabinets then I'll be looking forward to this. If not then I'll pass. They have the resources and cash to rival Home but choose not to. We'll have to see, I guess.

	$5 a game is pretty good, my only beef with buying arcade games and game updates is that it should just have a dollar amount, not a point amount. I hate when some game update comes out and its 800 points, and i have like 740.....then you have to buy another 500 minimum. that part of it doesnt make sense to me. I just think dollar amounts for EVERYTHING would make much more sense.

	Haha, that's funny. Right as I was thinking it sounds like a slightly more useful version of Playstation Home (which is utterly useless, so I guess anything they came up with would have been slightly more useful really), the article points out that Microsoft already responded to that point before anyone could call them on it. Maybe it's just because I've been up for about 17 hours or so, but I lol'd.

	This looks really promising. I think it's a great idea, and the prices are just fine, but I wouldn't know which game to buy first. Most of the time, when I was at the arcade, it was at the 1989 TMNT machine. I've got that one AND Turtles in Time: Reshelled, so I probably won't dip into this. It's still an awesome idea and I might just explore the arcade anyway. :)

	@57: if you buy the game, you play it free, the pay for play is for the games you don't own So is it confirmed that there's no online multiplayer in this? Thats sort of the thing I was hoping for and that would get me to buy a fair ffew of these games so mates and I could play online.

	@20 Yeah, it's so easy to do that, it's not like there's a global recession happening or anything. 2 of the better games on the list (centipede/millipede) suck without a trackball. I don't know, 3 bucks for Atari 2600 games......you can buy used 360 games for 5 bucks with better depth and game play.

Red Baron (arcade) Both these games im getting they should do a contract with sega because they had some awesome games like die hard arcade,virtue cop,house of dead series,Golden axe trilogy,Streets of rage trilogy and many more. I know you can already get the console versions of certain mega-drive (Genisus)games but there is a lot of arcade hits sega had, most are in japan and we had never seen the light of day (us and euro).

	Maybe if they had done it as a fee based service like GameTap I would be interested, but as it stands its hard to get excited about paying 5 bucks (or 3) a title for games that have been coming in compilation packs for years at $20 a pop.

	I still think the Game Room looks like Home (more specifically a clone of the Mall in Home but a more cartoon look to it). The description also sound so much like Home too. But with that being said I think it looks nicer then Home and is a better concept in a way. But I think the price points are a bit to high for my tastes. Then again I don't know many of these games but if they were to bring TMNT IV: Turtles in Time then I would buy it in a heart beat.

	For all of you who are like, "it's really old, 5 bucks is ridiculous." Think about it this way, could you find these games at your game store? No. Could you find them online? Yes. HOWEVER, they are going to be extremely expensive, because they're classics. 5 bucks isn't a big deal, especially if you loved the game as a kid. It's not like MS is forcing you to buy every single game on here.

	People bitch because they want better things for the 360. There are so many great arcade games that Microsoft charges way too much for. Most of these games are in flash for the large price of free. Now if the games have achievements it's very probable people will buy them. If not then it will fail miserably.

	Also, why are so many people tripping on the price structure as if it was something new? 360 has been releasing old-school games (and I mean old) since the system's birth for 400 MS and higher, so....where's the beef? If you don't care about playing it on a PC filled with the pride of actually contributing to your beloved industry (emulator-free), then your paying almost half of what was normally expected of you. P.S. many game stores sell old school games for 2.50 and up (and it's getting harder to find those games at all), so it's not like MS is an innovator in the field or anything.

	I think the idea/concept is really cool, only I'm bummed that the kinds of arcade games that I played as a kid won't be available (at least not yet). The Simpsons Arcade, Sunset Riders, House of the Dead, Crazy Taxi, The Grid, NFL Blitz, Silent Scope, GI Joe etc. I could go on and on.

	sigh what won't microsoft do to get more money..... I like retro games just like the next guy, but seems iffy to me. Microsoft could totally toss all of those on a disc and sell it as a game, or at least a bunch of titles as an arcade game....like the introductory 30 in one. plus 40MSP for a single play? that's way too much in my opinion, seeing how a full version is 400, and for that you can get some sweet content (most arcade games are about 800MSP,or1200MSP) What's next? Charging us to download and play demos? Because in a sense that is what microsoft is doing. If the games had trial versions- (so you can give the game a go to try if you like it, just like arcade games -you get achievemetns only if you have the full version) perhaps I'd believe, but otherwise no sale for me.

	I can't believe anybody is complaining about $3 a game, seriously. I am 15, I earn $11 an hour... Essentially, if the games are good, I can buy 3 games and play 4 others for an hours pay and get more than an hour of enjoyment. If you bought an xbox, you can afford $3, really... AND if you don't value a game as worth $3 don't buy it, it's fairly simple. Just like buying games from gamestop... In my opinion, each game should have a 1 level (or timed, or 1 play) demo which has no achievements before I spend my $3 on it for the same reason as any other demo. The one thing that could ruin this arcade idea is the achievements, because if they have achievements that require multipul plays it's ruined. 	well i for one am probably not going to bother playing on this much since most of these are so old that its going to be hard to squeeze any quality playtime out of it as they've been re-released so many times before, the only game i might get is warlords, thats when if or when it comes out. i think they should add in the various xbla games in there as well to liven it up a bit because nostalgia will only last so long.

	I'm kinda on the fence with this thing. When they start delving into the late '80's through the mid '90's with this, I really hope we see the triple-A titles most of us arcade junkies know and love. Also, part of an arcade's original appeal was, as stated previously, huddling around the actual cabinets themselves, sitting in the seat for driving games, holding a plastic light gun for shooting games, etc. You're not gonna get that with a 360 controller or any combination of accesories, unless you've got a lot of floor space in your house and plenty of free time on your hands. 	Didn't realize I would get cut off... I do like the idea of being able to drop in 50 cents and play, but at that point and depending on the title, it might end up feeling like paying to play a demo. Where's the seperation at that point? Three bucks seems like a reasonable price, but I don't quite get the extra cost for duel platform accessibility. Seems like something that Gold Members would get for free. Anyone happen to know which licenses we'll see, outside of Atari and Intellivision?

	@160 They sold Advertising space, you lose try again. unless you have never noticed the ADVERTISING its right on Google's front page (this is under the search bar) Advertising Programs - Business Solutions - About Google. 	So they can cross platform pc to xbox, and vise versa. So why not ps3 to xbox 360 and vise versa. Then (off topic but still) all COD 360 players can own the nooby ps3 players. I reackon if they wanted to they could, but theres no money in it for them.

	Are people out there really DYING to play these? Sure, they are classic games, but most of them you can find on the net as flash games. And if your argument for that is that it's not the same experience... well, neither is this besides the fact that you are paying them for it. I was excited and expecting to see some quality arcade titles here, but all I got was a nostalgia bomb that i've seen 100 times before.

Remember when you could pick up a classic game compilation of 10-20 games for a budget $30 tops? Back then the companies didn't think we'd pay through the nose for their old works, considering a freakin 5 year old game could sell for no more than 6 dollars. And those compilations were never talked about. Nowadays, its the next big thing, and that means more money for the same product. Game stores gave these same games away for free or threw them out. There are plenty of ways online to buy the same original games for pennies. 	I can confirm that Game Room does have achievements. In the CES 2010 video for this on Inside Xbox, during a game of Tempest, an achievement popped up on the screen. This achievement was called My First Medal, and it was 5G. The video also shows a screen with some medals on it. These are are the medals they wr probably talking about. Something tells me one of the games will have a medal for multiple playthroughs of the game. In this case, don't expect to get all the achievements of a game on one try.

	Hey, the math is simple. If the games that don't exist yet have achievements, my arcade room is going to be REALLY full... lol. (because the cat above mentioned Tempest as proof, but that already exists in X-Box world. I'm looking at the "newer" ones that will come available with this, like Yar's Revenge & such. However, as my roommate would be just as prone to buy these as I would, do these have the same things as regular arcade games that are downloaded in that if he buys one, I get to play it and vice versa? If so, I have a feeling all 30 are getting bought day one. I don't mind cash grabs as long as I get some thing out of it, which completing 30 arcade games sounds pretty bad ass to me! :-p And as much as I'm hearing the whole "let's have arcade games from the late 90's"

	$3 a game isn't really a big deal especially since you get the arcade cab and supposedly perfect translation. (the sound in TRON is eeh... at best) I'll certainly only buy a few that I havn't already. Now I know what to do with the $300 I saved by NOT buying a P$3 in addition to my 360. :D
