Top 5 Boss Fights of 2008

Yesterday we looked at the Top 5 Characters of the year and up today is none other than, the Top 5 Boss Battles of the Year. We’re not focussing on cool bosses here, we’ll leave that for another day; we’re after the great set pieces of the year. You know ... that feeling when you’re stood toe to toe with your foe just about to exchange blows and you kind of get an “uh oh” moment.

Beware, the feature is absolutely riddled with spoilers from some of the year’s titles, so I warn you if you don’t want some of the year’s games spoilt, don’t make the jump.

In at number 5 are a couple of beasts from a game that is synonymous with these large, OTT battle scenes. Ninja Gaiden 2 was in fact a bossfest but a couple of eerie critters stood out of the crowd.

In the middle of the title you come across which can only be described as a monstrous armadillo but it isn’t till the 12th level where the shock really kicks in. Stood in front of hero Ryu Hayabusa is not one, but two of these monstrous armadillos and now ... they’re fiery than the gates of hell, and are prone to episodes of explosion too. Hectic and panic are two words to describe the emotion of this fiery showdown.

Where would a Top 5 boss battle list of the year be without an intense RPG slog fest? A battle of will and strategy where the cleverest and strongest will undoubtedly come out on top. To make the list this year is Lost Odyssey’s Immortal One and despite him looking like an inflated Jar Jar Binks head, this son of a bitch was one tough cookie to crack.

The Immortal One is a typical turn based RPG ultimate boss whose high HP and lack of weaknesses mean you’re in for a long, tough fight that is equally as epic. Just a shame that he doesn’t look that cool ... Someone needs a better stylist.

Devil May Cry 4 was another of the year’s spectacular bossfests but despite the ultra cool looking Berial, the interesting Bael & Dagon boss sequence and the ridiculously huge Saviour battle; there was another battle that stuck out and stood above all them.

For years in the Devil May Cry series we’ve taken control of Dante and issued the ass kickings, but this time around, we had to stand toe to toe with this usually unstoppable force. Midway through Devil May Cry 4, Nero and Dante have to duke it out for Dante’s brother’s sword and for the whole of the cutscene that preceeds the fight, you get the “Oh no, surely we’re not going to fight Dante” feeling. A truly epic fight and it was kind of nice to be on the wrong side of some of his trademark moves for once. Nice in an S&M kind of way I suppose.

In what can only come from one of the biggest franchises in the world ... no wait, the galactic universe, comes our number 2 boss battle. On the whole Star Wars was very much a fan game that failed to hit home with the rest of the gaming public, however, hidden in the Lucasarts story was a battle that was a pure Star Wars masterpiece.

Proxy is a protocol droid with a built in hologram generator who is able to take the form and fighting skills of anyone he researches. In the epic showdown with Proxy, Starkiller faces various forms of the sentient being, but its final form uncovers the legendary Darth Maul who steps up for its final showdown with the young Sith. I know I use the word epic a lot ... But seriously, this is!

The final mission of GTA IV is an indication of how far games have come in recent years. In a mission that would be at home in Hollywood, the final showdown in GTA IV comes in at our top spot this year.

Whether you decide to choose to deal with or exact revenge on Dimitri, the last mission plays out in a similar fashion. From storming the old abandoned seaside casino, to following the object of your aggression to the roof. What ensues then is either a high speed boat chase or an off road bike jaunt with Niko shouting obscenities, looking to make someone pay for his pain and suffering. From the coast to the air, the final showdown comes at the base of the Statue of Happiness. Pure, scripted, gaming genius.

	meh the list is ok, really dont agree with num 1 being gta... i wouldnt really consider that level a "boss" battle and even if it was, it wasen't that amazing.

	good list, although im not 100% sure of the #1 pick. ..then again, I can't really think of anything else that was worthwhile.

	Eh, I loved GTA4 and even I wouldn't put the last battle in the top spot. Opinions are opinions, I know, but it was more of a "kill a hundred men then kill the boss with a single clip" than a boss battle. Not to mention the painful difficulty of the mission. Oh well.

	This one is good except for the GTA IV boos fight at #1. It was completely lackluster and one of the easiest things I've done in a game. I thought it was quite a bad ending. A russian queer or a fat Italian dude swearing obscenities and telling you you're not going to catch him, please. Didn't play either Lost Odyssey, Ninja Gaiden, or Star Wars so I can't judge there. Dante was a good choice it was a good battle, but quite easy because all you have to do is grab and throw. Yet it still was a great game overall.

	Now for me I would've thrown in all the bosses in Mega Man 9. Those were some good fights. The Super Mutant Behemoth battles from Fallout 3 were cool because you got to splatter them with the Mini Nuke, but those were more like encounters. Pending on the dates you consider the boss fight with Saren in Mass Effect was dope. Probably among others as well, but those are cool.

	Wow and nothing from dead space? Hell even that helicopter battle in BF:BC was better than the top 4. Hell even putting the more cinematic - than - fighting bosses of GoW2, Fable 2 or Fallout 3 wouldve been a better choice... even the T Rex from Turok! wow just a bad list again... :(

	GTA IV was a good game and it ends there. It wasn't epic, it wasn't worth more than two campaign plays just for achievements, it wasn't interesting to drive around the city to see the same scenery over and over, blowing crap up got boring, the story line was so-so, Niko was slightly interesting for a little while, the multiplayer was the shittiest heap of garbage that needed to be lit on fire maybe then it would of put out some heat, and overall it just wasn't as cracked up as the paid off reviews made it sound. Unless everyone on this planet is a complete affirmation of Freud's ID aka a primitive group of beasts it shouldn't be praised like it is.

	GTA IV FTW! You gotta admit that the last mission was a big success, it was fun and I thought it could never be done but I just hate the Multiplayer but other than that its a good game and deserves number 1.

	Iam glad to see DMC4 and Gaiden in there, I cant wait to see which one of them is classed the harder of the two in the poles

	The Proxy/Darth Maul fight was cool... and a good surprise... the Gaiden and Lost Oddysey battles were fair... But Dante was easy... and the final showdown in GTA4 isnt exactly a boss... not was it particularly impressive...

	all i got to say is dante, dual armies and proxy were a piece of piss but yet still awesome to fight. i had to fight dante bout 6 times cos theres so many difficulty levels.

	The last mission was pretty good in GTA IV no matter what you did prior to it, but it really doesn't count as a boss fight in my eyes. Ah well, not my list.

	Out of all of them I'd say the dual armadillos are the hardest to fight especially on path of the master ninja but they were all pretty good choices and all them were fun to battle except maybe the immortal one. He was pretty simple to beat it just took forever.

	I know it's peoples own opinions, but in mine that list is missing some mighty bosses. As already mentioned, The Spire fight was excellent in comparison to some of trhe above. And what about the final boss on Prince of Persia?

	LOL MGS4 on 360? Where are Infinite Undiscovery bosses? etheral queen? also i think DLC boss for LO was much more intimidating! Also I'm so sick of GTA4, glitches get praised in this but in others its bad wtf!

	Good list though In my opinion GTA isnt really a boss battle, its a final level alright but boss battles are you vs something that refuses to die!

	@#15 u are too right my friend once the new smell faded away from GTA4 it got very boring. Okay why isn't the leviathan from GoW2 up here, u just wanted to put GTA 4 at number 1, it doesn't count as a boss battle if u had to chase him for nearly five minutes and kill him with one hit. U had battles leading up to ur encounter with the boss if u want to call him that. What about top 5 encounters, I would put Prince Of Persia's encounter with Arihman up there at number 1. It wasn't a battle but it was an encounter that had my jaw hanging for a good few minutes.

	Yeah, where is the Leviathan fight from GoW2? I also think that there were much better boss fights from DMC than the Dante fight... I like the Star Wars fight though, good choice.

	@Anyone who suggested dead space, go play the game again and tell me where any of the boss battles were not "shoot the big yellow thing". The only thing that made dead space bosses impressive was their size and coding, not really a toe to toe awesome fight sequence. Keep an eye out for the villains list though ;)

	how did GTA get the best boss fight. there are much better battles with that like fighting skorge in GoW 2. come on guys.

	how can everyone say such negative things about GTA? i completely agree with this list but i thought ninja gaiden should have been higher. you all know GTA was a masterpiece and everyone is just jumping on the banwaggon against it. GTA FTW!

	Gears Of War - The first berzerker fight or the fight with the corpser,were both "uh oh" moments for me,shame they weren't in this top 5 :(

	^ gears of war was 2006, though. and the skorge fight was kind of lame, as much as i love it, its way to easy to win.

	Agree with a few comments, Saviour from DMC 4 was just epic due to the size of it and was a lot better then dante and I would of liked to have seen a castle crashers boss but Webb wouldn't listen :( Some of the bosses were picked due to there difficulty ie ninja gaiden and lost odyessey and if you disagree with either of these being in the top 5, you just haven't played the games.

	I loved GoW2 a lot but I don't get why people think that any of those bosses should have been included. They were far worse than the bosses in 1 which is saying something since those were nothing to write home about (excluding the first time you fought a Berserker, that was cool). The Leviathan was setup to be cool and instead ended up being easy, obvious and anti-climatic. And speaking of anti-climatic boss battles, what was up with the final one? It wasn't even a fight. My friend and I didn't even know if we were doing it right then we won. Raam was lame but hard; Skorge was cool-looking but his fight was lame, easy and hardly a fight at all.

	I thought this list was about "Boss Fights", yet GTA IV takes #1? The final mission was fun and annoying, but the "boss fight" was extremely easy and lame. Also, I would've put Professor K in for Lost Odyssey instead of The Immortal One.

	I thought both the Leviathan and Hive Mind from Dead Space were amongst the best bosses I had played in a game for a while. I havent's played any of the games here so I can't really comment on the choices however.

	I agree with the 5,4,3, and 2 but GTA4 seriously that #1 spot should have atleast gone to a hard boss the #5 spot in ninja giaden was harder then the #1 spot

	#63...WTF? Scourge in Gears 2 was pretty sweet, if not short for how developed he was. I'm not entirely sure about Proxy though. Who didn't fell like god while fighting Vader. Multiple stages, close quarters, Vader without his helmet, what's more to ask.

	Personally I had more trouble with Master Ring User than The Immortal One. That (MRU) was long, The Immortal One was at least over reasonably quick.

	Truly awful list, sorry, but only due to the fact GTA IV is in there, spoils whole list to me. i agree a lost odyysey boss should be in there, but the immortal one was not hardest (DLC one was harder) but bosses shouldnt be in this list for hardness, so i believe the final boss of LO should be there 3 parter with a very original middle fight Amazing. and truly evil guy cant comment on Ninja Guiden 2 not played, theres better than Star wars bosses. dante was pretty good choice imo it should be. in no particular order LO final boss (but this one is first) Dante GOW 2 leviathan Dead Space final boss infinite undiscovery leinhart AND final NOTE. People truly need to stop treating GTA 4 as if its gods gift from heaven, it was TRULY average, not awful

	the proxy choice is dumb! The darth vader/emperor fight was a LOT better. I mean, all you have to do is pick up darth maul and throw him around. NOT very exciting, especially when you're fighting darth maul who is supposed to be awesome at fighting. And who said that you can give force powers to a droid who can pull different types of lightsabers out of his ass? There's only so much holograms and repulsers can do. Stupid game developers.

	Haha I have to agree with a decent size junk of the community on this one that you failed at the number 1 choice. I had actually forgot what all fully happened with that boss battle, I can remember games from 07 still but not that one. The boss battle was just chase, chase, chase, decide, over. Not very entertaining. The rest I would agree on a few buddies of mine had showed me those battle in particular except Proxy. No Comment on that one.

	I think Ahriman should've beaten fiery armadillos. Sure he wasn't too hard to beat but seeing him for the best time was definitely an "uh-oh" moment.

	I've only played GTA IV and I think #1 is deserved. As much as it was frustrating it was still a relief to be done with it. What I do have a problem with is with all these people hating up on GTA. Every nomination/award is apparently not deserved. How? Physics too hard? It's a great game if you can get used to it and yes the MP sucks but that's LIVE for you. And sure the achievements were hard, but you play a game becuase it's a game. You're depriving it of that if you just whore. Anyway, cool list. #1 spot MUCH DESERVED.

	Lost odyssey deserved its spot up there. but you got the wrong boss. Star Wars? yuck. GTA? NO WAY MAN. all others are good.

	OMG Fable 2 was the biggest let down I've ever played. One damn shot and he's done. I was almost convinced he would come flying back out of the hole 10x tougher and the awesome battle would ensue. But no, gayest ending ever. Haven't played any of these games, hehe, so this list is fine with me.

	Honestly, they picked the right boss for #1. I never expected that you would have 2 kill Pegorino if you killed Dimitri (Which is what I did when I beat it for the first time. Stupid slippery slimey little backstabbing prick fuck!) Dimitri was a LITTLE bitch!

	You forgot Samuel Jackson in Jumper. That was an epic battle. You got to fight him for 4 rounds. And in Egypt. Talk about amazing.

	GTA IV didnt have a boss fight it had a final mission. If it were to have a boss fight then you wouldnt have killed the boss with 1 shot in a cutscene after shooting him a bit... it was almost as bad as Fable 2

	Never played 3 of those 5, and the only two I have played, only 1 I've finished. I liked the star wars battle, and wish that was number 1, except the GTA crap. I know, I never finished GTA IV, but just thinking about how bad the game was, I don't think it deserved Number 1 spot.

	I only played number 1 and 2, but I think that number 2 is better (Proxy). Stabbing Darth Maul with his own lightsaber :) But kicking Vaders ass was also cool in that game

	Gta shouldn't have been up there as number 1. I think 1 of the NG2 bosses Should have been number 1. The fight with Zedonius=GREAT!!

	Devil May Cry 4's boss fight was in my opinion way more intense than the fight with Proxy. The coolest part of the Proxy fight was when he turned into Darth Maul. So, maybe you should just have that part of the fight in the list lol.

	GTA IV had a good storyline and the missions were fun, but I agree that it shouldnt have made the top 5. I mean at least Gow2 should have been on there, or Fallout 3
