Member of the Month - Feb, 2009: Method

Well, it's been a while, but it's good to be bringing you our latest MoM. When we choose Member of the Month, we like it to be for a contribution to the site or for outstanding work. This months fits both catagories. Not only is he a proud member of our guide team, but his idea has changed the way we do guides and hopefully made it even easier for you guys to get points by giving us the Road Map idea. Without further ado, I introduce you to....

Let’s start by finding out a bit more about the man behind the Gamer Tag. Please enlighten us!
My name is John Walker, no association to the liquor, I'm 27 and I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I'm currently engaged to my beautiful fiancee Christina and have now idea when we're getting married since we still don't have a date set.  I graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering and I currently work as a Captain in the U.S. Army in the Engineer branch (and yes I have deployed to Iraq if you're wondering). However I will be leaving the military soon and unfortunately have no idea what I'll be doing next.  When I'm not at work or playing on my 360 I'm usually out hiking the Rocky Mountains or spending time with friends.

What’s your proudest Xbox moment?
I would have to say finding all of the orbs in Crackdown.  I spent quite a lot of time trolling rooftops waiting to hear that glorious sound that was my missing orb.  Overall though I didn't mind those collectible achievements since they had some sort of benefit for my character.  It's when a game has collectibles that do absolutely nothing that I get a little upset.  I mean honestly, if these objects I'm finding have no bearing on the game play then why on God's green Earth would you put them into your game and force me to find them for an achievement?

Everyone has a 360 game they can't get enough of. What’s yours?

Of all the games I have played I would have to say Crackdown and Lost Odyssey are my two favorites.

Crackdown has to be the best surprise I've ever gotten when gaming.  When I bought the game I had no idea how much fun I was about to have.  The ability to free roam around a city as a genetically superior wrecking machine, killing gangsters and throwing innocent civilians from the highest peaks never gets old.  Plus there's a lot of fun games you can make up and play with a friend online such as car golf and body bowling.

As a huge RPG fan, I thought Lost Odyssey was truly marvelous.  The cinematic way that the game told its deep story along with the tremendous game play and fun achievements (except Treasure Trove) captivated me for weeks.  You would be hard pressed to find a more fulfilling game than this one.

And the game that makes you scream?
Honestly, I'm a very patient gamer.  It takes an incredible amount of frustration to get me to yell at a television.  Overall though if I had to pick a couple instances in which I was very agitated I would have to say NHL 2K6 and Wall*E.  For NHL 2K6, like most people I was playing it for the gamer score.  However after three hours of trying, the game never saw fit to grace me with even one penalty shot!  It didn't seem to matter what I did right, I'm apparently destined to never max out that game.  For Wall*E, for some reason I had the hardest time finishing the last level without dying.  I'm not sure if it was because it's a kid's game or the fact that the reason I kept dying was that morbidly obese people kept running into me, but I was definitely more satisfied than usual after finishing that game.

You get stranded on a desert island. Whilst exploring, you magically come across a HDTV, 360 and a magic box giving you any 3 games of your choice. What ones you go for?
If had to pick just three games I would go with Crackdown, Oblivion and Too Human. I love all three and I figure those games all have good replay value and would keep me entertained. Of course I would give up all of those items for a ride off of the island ....or a volleyball named Wilson.

What achievement are you going to be gunning for next?
I honestly couldn't tell you.  Since I rent games from local stores I'm pretty much at the mercy of whatever they have in stock.  There's still a lot of games I want to play but it seems like everyone else wants to play them too.  However, if I can I'd really like to get my hands on Left 4 Dead, Mirror's Edge or LOTR: Conquest.  Wish me luck next time I go in for a game!

When you're picking the next game to grace your console, do you go for game play or achievements first?
I definitely go for achievements first (...and if I told you otherwise you would just look at my card and call me a liar).  Overall though I'm not too upset that I go for achievements first as I've played and enjoyed a lot of games I would have never picked up if their achievements hadn't interested me.  On the other hand I'm a huge RPG fan and will play pretty much any RPG I can get my hands on.  There's something about being able to invest time into your character to make them "superhuman" or whatever other species they may be that really draws me in.  With this in mind, for some reason I really want to play Rise of the Argonauts.

What was the last thing you downloaded from the Arcade?
I am proud to say that I joined the millions of other gamers out there who took part in the great "Dash of Destruction" free 200G frenzy.

Is the 360 your only current console? What others have sharpened your gaming skills over the years?
Yes, I only buy one console per generation.  I fully plan on sticking with the Xbox though as it definitely has the best features and games in my opinion.  Other than the Xbox 360 I have also owned an Xbox, Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo, Nintendo and Atari.  My affinity for gaming started with Pong and Asteroids on the Atari and graduated to Blades of Steel, TMNT and Spelunker on the Nintendo.  From there I moved onto Mario RPG (one of the best games ever) and Starfox on the Super Nintendo and Goldeneye and Zelda on the Nintendo 64.  After a surprise Christmas present, I got an Xbox and happily made the transition over from Nintendo to Microsoft.  I stand here today amazed at how far gaming has come since I was young and I look forward to what is yet to come.

What is your gaming set up?
Nothing too impressive.  I have a 52" Toshiba LCD HDTV with an HDMI input for my 360; my sound system is a BOSE 3-2-1 Entertainment system.  As far as Xbox 360s go I have just one and I guard it and pamper it in the hope of not getting any red rings.  I hope I didn't just jinx myself...

We all know gaming goes on till the early morning. What do you eat and drink to keep the reflexes sharp all night?
As much as I try not to, I have a pretty horrible diet.  My dinners usually consist of something like hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza or Chinese food.  Even when I try to be good and eat a salad it's not healthy; I usually end up with with way too much meat and not enough vegetables.  As far as drinks go, I gave up soda and alcohol a couple of years ago, but my newly found juice habit seems to be more expensive that the other two combined.  Maybe I should switch back or just drink water.

What brought you to this site and what keeps you coming back for more?
I actually started looking at the main site and its forums in November of 2006.  Unfortunately I had never been part of a site's forum community and so I really didn't want to jump into unfamiliar waters.  However after about a year and a half of perusing the site without contributing anything I finally decided that this was the best place on the internet for everything Xbox 360 related and joined.  Between the Press Team's interesting articles, the Review Team's impartial and detailed reviews, the Guide Team's relentless pursuit of the fastest and easiest ways to complete achievements and all the other contests and miscellaneous competitions there's no better place than x360a.org!

And final comments….
I just like to say that I am extremely humbled to be selected for this award.  For those of you who are blissfully unaware, the staff here put in a tremendous amount of effort into making this site the best gaming site on the internet.  To be recognized above the countless others who work so hard to make this site so great is a tremendous honor for me.  I absolutely love being a member here and I'm proud to be counted among you.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
