|Get 100 or more rings.|
"Centurion" is a giveaway achievement and will probably be the first one you unlock. You only have to simply gain 100 rings in any level at any time (but your counter must read "100"). Every level in the game has more than 100 rings with the exception of Final Zone, so if you'd like to just passively get this achievement you will most likely get it in Star Light Zone, which is full of hoops and loops that contain lots of rings.
|Clear the Green Hill Zone.|
|Another easy steal. All you have to do is sink Dr. Robotnik's big wrecking ball ship in Green Hill Zone Act 3 to get this achievement. His movements are very predictable and the battle is more or less a "stick and move" contest.|
|Beat Green Hill Zone Act 1 in under 35 seconds.||(2)|
|For this achievement I'll introduce the concept of Quick Saving/Loading. Make it a habit to save your game often so you can simply reload it from that point and try again. The system works like an emulator's savestate function and is easily abusable. It helps to play through Green Hill Zone Act 1 a few times to get a general idea of how the level is laid out and where enemies are located. Try to keep on the high parts of the level and keep airborne as long as you can, toss in just a smidgen of luck and you have this one in the bag.|
|Beat Marble Zone Act 1 in under 80 seconds.||(4)|
|This speedrun-style achievement functions in the same way as "Fast Green". However, this one is a little different because the level is longer and there are a handful of parts that involve a little bit of impatient waiting. Again, it is recommended to get a mental map of the level and know to expect traps and hang-ups ahead of time.|
|Star Light Zone||5|
|Get to the Star Light Zone.|
|Upon completion of Labyrinth Zone you will get this achievement. Labyrinth Zone does not actually have a boss persay, it is more of a race. You need to keep up with Dr. Robotnik and the rising water while avoiding the fireball spitting statues and harpoons lining the walls. The physics of jumping underwater in the game do not seem to help at all, and once again there is a bit of pressure due to holding your breath underwater. The level seems to go on forever, but if you keep your cool and focus only on dodging the hazards you'll emerge from the water and get to the Egg Prison.|
|Spring Yard Zone||7|
|Get to the Spring Yard Zone.||(1)|
|Upon completion of Marble Zone you will get this achievement. To beat the Marble Zone boss only try to hit Dr. Robotnik when he is flying or getting ready to drop a fireball, else you might bounce off into the lava or come back down and land on a burning platform.|
|Get to the Labyrinth Zone.||(1)|
|Upon completion of Spring Yard Zone you will get this achievement. Dr. Robotnik in Spring Yard Zone is arguably the most annoying boss in the game. You can only seem to hit him when he is about to come down with his grappling spike to pick up a block. These blocks do not respawn so there is a sense of urgency to the battle that adds some unwanted pressure. Keep on him and after the regular amount of hits he'll explode and flee.|
|Get one Chaos Emerald.|
|All you have to do is beat one Special Stage to get this achievement. For more Special Stage tips and tricks see "Chaos Master" below.|
|Get all the Chaos Emeralds.||(5)|
|To enter a Special Stage you must meet these requirements:|
- Be in Act 1 or Act 2 of a Zone.
- Have 50 rings at the end of the level.
- Jump into the big ring at the end of the level.
Each Special Stage is a colorful rotating crystalline chamber full of rings, bumpers, and hazards that will try to impede your process. Do not be fooled by the blue and red "GOAL" buttons as these will only end the level and leave you with nothing. You'll see the Chaos Emerald if you persevere and get to the end. The emeralds are guarded by barriers of colored gems, and hitting these gems will cause them to change color and eventually disappear. Once you break through and grab the emerald the level will end.
Here are some helpful tips to beat the Special Stages:
- Use the Quick Save/Load function before every level starts.
- Generally following the path of rings will lead you to the Chaos Emerald. If you come to a fork in the road, follow the rings.
- If you are in the process of breaking the gems blocking the Chaos Emerald, use nearby Reverse switches to always keep you in an opportune position to break the gems.
|Beat the game.|
|There is nothing special required to get this achievement. All you have to do is beat the game. You do not need all of the Chaos Emeralds, you do not have a set time limit, and you can die as many times as you like. To beat the Star Light Zone boss you can attack Dr. Robotnik in two different ways; you may use the see-saws to launch his spiked mines back at his ship, or you can use the mines as counter weights to bounce Sonic into the ship. Beating the Scrap Brain Zone/Final Zone boss is a trifle difficult but not impossible. You have 0 rings during this so you cannot get hit; the most dangerous things in this level are the purple electrodes that shoot out from the red sensors at the top of the screen. You have to hit the piston that Dr. Robotnik is hiding inside to hurt him, and yes the pistons can smash you. Hitting Dr. Robotnik is almost a game of luck, so just keep on your toes and you'll eventually be presented with enough opportunities to sink him once and for all.|
|Beat the game in under 40 minutes.||(11)|
|40 minutes is 2,400 seconds; with 19 levels in the game this evens out to 126 seconds, or just over two minutes, per level. You can beat the Green Hill Zone and Marble Zone levels (and perhaps some of the Spring Yard Zone levels) in under this time so this gives you a little bit of leeway to work with in future levels such as Labyrinth Zone and Scrap Brain Zone. Save before (and after) every level, that way if you feel liek you could have done it faster you can simply reload and try again.|
|Beat the game without dying.||(2)|
|To "die" in this game Sonic has to get hit while he has zero rings. As long as you have at least one ring you can get hit as many times as you like, given that you always go back and pick up this ring. Much like the advice given for the "Fast Win" achievement, saving before and after every level is a good strategy, that way if you die you can reload the level and start over. If you are an exceptionally talented Sonic the Hedgehog player you can be daring and try to combine this achievement with literally every single achievement available for this game, it's possible to nail them all in one play through.|
