Introduction:
For those not in the know, Sam & Max have been around for a while, since 1987 in fact, and have been in games since 1989. "Beyond Time and Space" follows on from "Save The World," their first outing on XBA. Like the first game it is episodic, split into five seperate cases. Many of the NPCs from the first game make appearances, along with a load of new whacky characters. The games is your classic point and click adventure, which if a walkthrough is used and dialogue skipped can be finished off very quickly. However, you will miss much of the great humour and miss a lot of the game out.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
Each of the five eposides has an achievement for finishing it, and a missable achievement. There is one for finishing the game, and one for unlocking all upgrades for the Desoto. This is sort of cumulative, as you need to complete the driving mini games in episodes 1,2,3 and 5, collecting all of the decals. This is the only really tricky achievement in the game, but is more frustrating than difficult.

To complete the episodes and get all of the missable achievements, you need to explore every nook and cranny, talk to and exhaust all dialogue with characters and pay attention to what is said. Alternatively, you can use tastefulmrship's excellent walkthrough found here. Follow this word for word, line for line and you will be done in no time.

Conclusion:
Sam and Max Beyond Time and Space can be used as either a great point and click adventure with a good story and excellent wit and humor, or you can fly through and enjoy the easy gamerscore. Up to you, but I would recommend the first!

  • Celebrate the Bug's birthday before his family arrives.

In Episode 1: Ice Station Santa, after going to the North Pole and back to Straight Street, you will be able to enter Stinky's Diner. In the middle booth, talk to BUG. You can talk as much or as little as you want, then exit the conversation by choosing "So long." Talk to BUG again, and the achievement will unlock.

This must be done before entering the PORTAL TO PRESENT at the North Pole, because that is when the Bug's family arrives.
  • Offer the granite sandwich to everyone on the island.

In Episode 2: Moai Better Blues, you need to use the GRANITE SANDWICH on seven (7) characters on the surface of Easter Island. If you skip the dialogs with the button, the achievement will still unlock.

To obtain the GRANITE SANDWICH, enter STINKY'S DINER, and talk to STINKY. Then say, "What's the special?", "We're ready to order.", and "Give us the special."

On Easter Island, there are three areas: the area with the three MOAI HEADs, the ANCIENT HIDDEN UNDERGROUND CAVE to the left of the first area, and the TINY TIKI area to the left of the cave entrance.

When you try to enter the ANCIENT HIDDEN UNDERGROUND CAVE for the first time, BABY HOFFA will come out.

Here are the seven characters and their locations:

    In the MOAI HEAD area:

    1. The left MOAI HEAD.
    2. The middle MOAI HEAD.
    3. The right MOAI HEAD.
    4. LINCOLN.

Outside the entrance to the ANCIENT HIDDEN UNDERGROUND CAVE:

    5. BABY HOFFA

    In the TINY TIKI area:

    6. BABIES.
    7. BABY GLENN MILLER.
  • Try every possible body part in the monster.

In Episode 3: Night of the Raving Dead, after you go to Stuttgart, enter The Zombie Factory, and go through the FIREPLACE, you will find JURGEN'S MONSTER. There are twelve (12) body parts that you need to attach to the monster.

Some body parts can only be attached to the MONSTER ARM, but some can be attached to either the MONSTER HEAD or the MONSTER CHEST. You only need to use each body part once, it doesn't matter where you use it.

Eight (8) of the body parts are on the BODY PARTS table to the left of JURGEN's MONSTER, and four (4) of the body parts must be taken from your inventory to be used on the monster.

The CHOCOLATE HEART must be attached and removed from the monster before using the ALCHEMY MACHINE to turn the CHOCOLATE HEART into the HEART OF GOLD.

Here are the twelve body parts:

    On the BODY PARTS table:

    1. EGG BEATER.
    2. ARTICHOKE HEART.
    3. CAULIFLOWER.
    4. STONE.
    5. COMPUTER CHIP.
    6. CLOCK.
    7. FOAM FINGER.
    8. FEATHER DUSTER.

    In your inventory:

    9. ZOMBIE LINCOLN'S BRAIN.
    10. JESSE JAMES' HAND.
    11. CHOCOLATE HEART.
    12. HEART OF GOLD.
  • Choose every dialog choice with each AI personality.

In Episode 4: Chariots of the Dogs, when you get to the spaceship, you need to interact with the CENTRAL DEVICE. It's located to the right of BOSCOW, above the CAPTAIN'S CHAIR.

You need to select the first four dialog choices for each of the four setting choices. If you skip the dialogs with the button, the achievement will still unlock.

Step 1: Select "10 SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION", "20 OWNER IDENTIFICATION", "30 OBVIOUS QUERY", and "40 ELEVATOR USAGE".

Step 2: Select "50 SYSTEM SETTINGS", and select "SUGGESTIVE".

    Step 3: Repeat Step 1.

Step 4: Select "50 SYSTEM SETTINGS", and select "PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE".

    Step 5: Repeat Step 1.

Step 6: Select "50 SYSTEM SETTINGS", and select "ABUSIVE".

    Step 7: Repeat Step 1.

You do not need to select "60 PRINT TIME CARD" or "70 TERMINATE".

This must be done before fixing Bosco's past, because the dialog choices will be gone after you save Bosco.
  • Spy on Satan berating the staff each time the efficiency drops.

In Episode 5: What's New, Beelzebub?, after you take the Soul Train to Hell, go through the OFFICE DOOR on the right, then the BACK ROOM DOOR on the far right of the office (that's two doors on the right). Above the door you just came through is the HELL EFFICIENCY METER.

In this room are dioramas with the souls of BOSCO, SANTA, and GRANDPA STINKY trapped inside. When your story-related actions free their souls (one at a time), the camera will focus on the HELL EFFICIENCY METER to show it drop. When this happens, go back through the MAIN OFFICE DOOR on the left to see Satan berate each of his three staff members (one at a time).
  • Win every upgrade for your car, and claim the Uber Mystery Upgrade.

In Episodes 1, 2, 3, and 5 (not Episode 4), there are mini-games that involve driving the DESOTO. These are always started by talking to the C.O.P.S. in the GARAGE on Straight Street, to the right of STINKY'S DINER.

Each episode's mini-game has different rules, but there are three bonus rounds of progressive difficulty in the games of all four episodes. In Episodes 1, 2, and 3, there is one story-related round. After winning this round, the player is automatically transported back to Straight Street. To play the bonus rounds, either talk to the C.O.P.S. again, or interact with the DESOTO, and select the dialog choice that corresponds to the mini-game (different for each episode).

There are also 4 bonus decals to shoot or drive over in each mini-game. To get the Uber Mystery Upgrade, you need to finish all fifteen (15) rounds and collect all sixteen (16) bonus decals.

You can keep replaying the mini-games as many times as you need. When you collect all of the decals in a mini-game, you will be automatically transported back to Straight Street, and the C.O.P.S. will tell you that you have received all of the available upgrades.

    Here are the bonus decals:

    Episode 1:

    1. Drive into the 10 BOWLING PINS in the middle of the road.
    2. Shoot, or drive into, the red CHEESE WHEEL crosiing the street from left to right.
    3. Shoot the PIANO suspended from a right-hand window.
    4. Shoot the GOOD-TIRE BLIMP as it flies across the sky.

    Episode 2:

    1. Shoot the TTG HOT-AIR BALLOON flying in the sky from left to right.
    2. Shoot the SAFE suspended from a left-hand window.
    3. Shoot the KITCHEN SINK thrown from the right side.
    4. Shoot, or drive into, the MONSTER-TRUCK TYRE rolling along the street from the left.

    Episode 3:

    1. Drive over the BEACH BALL that bounces across the road from the left.
    2. Drive over the zombie-guarded BEER KEG on the pavement to the left.
    3. Drive over the BOX KITE in the middle of the road.
    4. Drive over the SATELITE DISH on the pavement to the right.

    Episode 5:

    1. Shoot RUBBERDUCKAZILLA that appears from the left side of the screen.
    2. Shoot the FLYING CAR that flies over the middle of the road.
    3. Shoot the FOOTBALL that comes from the top-right side of the screen and bounces over the road.
    4. Shoot the RING DOUGHNUT that rolls across the road from the right.

After you receive all four upgrades from all four episodes, you will get the Uber Mystery Upgrade in Episode 5.

If you return to a previous episode to collect any decals that you had missed, make sure to either manually save or hit an auto-save after you return to Straight Street.

If the upgrade in Episode 5 is not your final upgrade, you will need to return to Episode 5, play the mini-game again, quit the mini-game with the button, and return to Straight Street with the button. The C.O.P.S. will then give you the Uber Mystery Upgrade.
