Explorer Achievement in Mafia II

  • Explorer

    10

Drive a total of 1,000 miles in vehicles in "Jimmy's Vendetta."

  • How to unlock Explorer

You will likely have only driven around 150 miles by the time you finish the story. So this is likely to be a big grind. There are two options for grinding out all of these miles. The first option is the fastest, but is completely manual, meaning you'll need to be actively playing the entire time, which will be a solid 20 hours of doing nothing but driving. Head to the freeway (yellow road on map) and keep driving from one head to the other. You can get a good speed so will cover miles quicker. If you start running out of gas, just steal another car and carry on.

The second method involves using a glitch in the map. This method is slower, but allows you to idle the game so you can do something else (go to work, sleep, etc.) which you progress towards this achievement. There is a clothing store in the southwest corner of the map that has a window you can drive through. The car will break the display window and you will free fall through the bottom of the map. You can average about 30 miles every hour. The image below shows the location on the map of this shop. It says "Electronics" on a white sign above the window. After you drive through the window and start falling, know that you do still need to band your controller to hold down the gas pedal in order to accumulate miles driven. Also be aware that there are reports of the achievement not unlocking if 1000 miles are reached while in the glitch spot. Instead, get close (990 miles or more) and then save, and quit. Reload the game, and drive the remaining mileage legitimately, and the achievement should unlock. Lastly, in order to save your progress while in the glitch, pause the game, go to Options, and then Game Options, and turn subtitles on or off. This will force a save when you leave the menu, saving your statistics.

  • This is for sure the most ridiculous achievement I have ever seen. Ive completed the game twice now and only clocked a total of about 400 miles. I spent today grinding to get another 150 but it's tough going. Right now I'm getting out but have left a couple of elastic bands on the controller and locked the car into a 20 MPH "loop". I know it will have stalled when I return home as the damn thing will run out of gas but at least I don't have to be sat in front of the screen all of the time.
  • I've clocked up a whole 184 miles to earn all other achievements. Some body came up with the idea for this achievement and I feel it is only fair they sit and clock up the miles for every single person who bought this add on.
  • Embrassing achievement... I drove about 30 hours to get it lol.
  • I've gotten 650 miles so far. I found that driving for an hour only nets you 50-60 miles at a time.
  • I noticed when doing finishing up the 50 miles one that the bridge is pretty much a mile long, so it's going to take quite a few crossings to get it if you're doing it that way!
  • takes such a long time man but i got it after driving more than 20 hours
  • Can this be done over multiple playthroughs of the DLC? I figured if you can play the DLC multiple times and have all the driving you do count towards this, it wouldn't feel like such a chore.
  • story done and got 107 miles. wow! I'm looking forward to it.... not really.
  • there is a way to obtain this cheevo without all the driving. go to youtube look up the mafia 2 jimmys bug video theres a storefront you can drive through activating a glitch where you freefall endlessly. i got the millionaire cheevo doing it this way and im going for the explorer, one thing, it takes about 20+ hours for it and you cant shut off and you cant save progress, also you need a wired controller or wired charger for controller and if your using hdmi cables and change the channel for a long period of time you might lose your video signal the game is still going but you cant see your progress. i did this a few times (duh). use the a/v cables that came with your system if not, good luck hunting.
  • oh forgot to mention its located near the bottom of the map on sand island as soon as you come out of the tunnel make first right, make second right, immediately on left drive through parking lot fences, and straight on through the lucheonette to your decent, hope you got patience for this.
  • Awesome glitch, xhumeher! Just used this, and watching the miles rack up with no effort on my part! ;P
  • ok i dont know if the glitch did not work, got over 1000 miles and no cheevo,( by the way i cant take credit for the glitch) i just found that miles count upward, i figured its gotta work cause i got the millionaire cheevo, i noticed that you can reload checkpoint and keep the miles, i also noticed that my car ran out of gas halfway through and i ignored it, might have something to do with this, just like one careful owner cheevo for vitos game. so im doing it again this time watching gas needle when its low gonna reload checkpoint and glitch again fingers crossed cuz if this dont work this time im doing it the legit way.
  • reload checkpoint fuel up then glitch again, fingers crossed in that order, hey sabot fox if you get it this way lemme know id love to know that this actually worked.
  • yay i got the acheivement. took a while but a few miles everyday and i got it. no driving, do the glitch i mentioned above. the problem was the gas. make sure you dont run out of it. plus you can load last checkpoint and or quit and the miles stay on your game stats just dont run out of gas!
  • got it now! Yes! the grinding has ending
  • Using the glitch I have found the car will go from 0-70 then drop to 0 again and then repeats over and over. This is giving me an average of about 20 mph. I need 800 miles so I am looking at about 40 hours. the things we do for an achievement are amazing. Thanks EXUME HER as I would not have driven the miles buy don't mind just leaving the console running and can get the 100% I had given up on when I saw the achievement and finished the DLC with 104 miles.
  • I am using my iPhone while using this guide and have just touched the screen near the rate this achievement section and have now acidently given this achievement 5 stars. THIS IS WITHOUT DOUBT THE WORST EVER ACHIEVEMENT and I have just given it a 5 star rating. Arrrrrrrrrrrh f&£k it.
  • Just tried glitching this achievement and once I reached the 1000 mile mark... no achievement. In trying to figure out what was wrong, I found that my Xbox had disconnected itself from xbox live somewhere in the two days I left it on for this achievement. Now I think I gotta create a new file and do it again as I'm over the 1000 mile mark on my one file and nothing seems to be triggering it. Future glitchers beware.
  • Hey guys i just registerd to site.. i been following this thread and im doing th glitch that xhumeher72 said about.. i have a question though: Ive got 300 miles racked up now from doing it.. but when i was gettinng bonus score it didnt give me the achievement for millionaire, how come? and what the best way to get the millionaire achievement? Thanks
  • This has not worked for me either. I have 1030 miles and no achievement.
  • I have finally got this achievement and 100%. The glitch to clock up miles is fine but if you go over 1000 while still free falling you will not get the achievement. Just make sure to save the game (just change the subtitle settings in the game options and it will auto save) just short of the 1000 miles. I saved at 995. Now load the last check point and drive the last few miles on the road. If the achievement does not unlock you can return to the xbox dashboard or turn off the console (make sure not to save the game) and try again till you get it. If you drive the last few miles I think you will be awarded the achievement but having a saved game will help as people who drove the whole 1000 miles on the road did not always earn this horrible and glitched achievement.
  • I can confirm that the glitch does work but you have to drive when you are going to hit the 1000 mile mark. i drove about 150 miles. did the glitch until 1015 no achievement. luckily i saved at 925 and drove the last 75 and popped right on time.
  • Mad easy, but very time consuming, one I'm not looking forward to.
  • Bah I wish someone had told me about the glitch before i got the achievement... Many wasted hours...
  • There is a glitch in empire bay if you drvie your car through a pane of glass, it will give you unlimited points and your falling will count as driving
  • is it just me, or does anyone else think that it's total bullshit that they force you to buy dlc to get full completion in some games?
  • Yeah & this is way too time consuming to do legit. Why would they make such a ridiculous achievement? I love the game, but come on....
  • im curious can you start a new game from your passed file, will u still have the mile/kills progress?
  • The achievement popped up for me at the 1,000 mile mark while endlessly falling, I did not have to drive the last few miles to get the achievement, it must just be hit and miss.
  • @26 no we all think its totally bullshit they make you buy dlc to keep the game 100% complete its called clever marketing and so is achievements there are many people who choose the xbox over the ps3 just because of achievements where as for me when the ps4 comes out im never ever going back to anything to do with microsoft as for now im sticking with my xbox only so i dont have to pay 200+ quid for another ps3 and because my mates play xbox and i have 60+ games but next gen i wont be getting an xbox purelly because of achievements and there marketing
  • Definitely wasted way too much of my time on this achievement... Great game, Great graphics, but after the 300,000th lap around the city it definitely lost the appeal.
  • Nonsense. Had a great time with this game until this.
  • Man this achievement is frigging annoying, I would never get it if it weren't for the glitch.
  • My mile counter was set to km some how, so that's what 1609.344km for 1000m we'll see if it unlocks, it's my last achievement for mafia II.
  • the glitch is the only way I could do this
  • You can always use the glitch or do like i did. I used the "Grand Upper Bridge" tactics. You just drive back and forth the bridge. One "lap" is about 1.3 miles long. It takes about 1 min to drive this "lap". So in one hour you drive about ~80 miles. And it takes with this tactic ~12.5 hours to get the Explorer achievement. Just remember to drive middle of the road --> you hardly ever hit other cars. Plus drive a fast car and upgrade it to maxmimum. Good luck. :)
  • I thought 159 wanted posters was bad enough, but 1000 miles? I've just bought this dlc and kinda wish I didn't, but it's the only way to get all the 'cheevs for the game. Spot on @26 & @31, it's a complete joke that we are forced to cough up more money if we want to perfect a game, Rockstar did it with L.A. Noire as well, I'm really hoping this won't be a common trend in the future.
  • ok i will use the glitch.. but when i resume the game it wiill freeze after about 1-2 minutes, before i can save so i lose the miles. how can i fix this? thank you
  • or it will just stall on the loading screen
  • One Word , Why?
  • Crazy achievement! After doing the campaign i had about 60 miles which really sucked, i drove round for ages and got to about 160 miles and then i heard about the glitch, the glitch sucks, for one the car is going around 15-20 MPH so takes like 40 hours and if you dont save the game it will crash!!! Plus there is the fact that in the back of your mind when you leave it on whilst in work/school that the xbox will get the red rings. The easiest way to do this for me was to get a fast car ( i used the potomac elysium or whatever its called that came with the dlc) then go to a body shop and supercharge it and put the wheels on the far right of the shelf on, then with the upgraded car go to one of the car theft missions,Its the shubert beverly theft opposite the gas station to the right of th
  • the phonebox and drive up and down the grand upper bridge, its really easy
  • @42 - Solid idea! I forgot you could upgrade cars, I'll upgrade something like the Ascot Bailey, I think it is, and then just do the motorway loop over and over while listening to some music :D Don't really wanna risk RRoD =/
  • guess how i'm gonna get this achievement...wait for it......wait for it......I'M NOT. that's right i'm not even gonna think about going for this achievement...and to all you people that are obsessed with chieves, please get over it already. this is how i look at it...i played entirely too many bad games and spent entirely too much time and energy doing stupid shit for chieves - than i finally got to 100,000 gamerscore (i wanted to get to 100,000 before my 3rd year on xbox live and i did it with time to spare)and like magic the need for chieves just left my body...kinda like a demon leaving someone during a exorcism. never again will i obsess over chieves that in the greater scheme of things mean absolutely NOTHING. once microsoft starts paying me to rack up gamerscore then and only the
  • ***Continued*** then and only then will i even think about investing the time and energy in chasing achievements.
  • Cool story, bro!
  • This Should Be Like Worth 50 Points Not Fucken 10 WTF
  • This is a pain in my A***. This is probably one of my 5 favorite games. (1. Timesplitters: Future Perfect, 2. Hitman: Blood Money, 3. Mafia II, 4. Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, and 5. Dead Island). I was thinking... only have 127.34 miles... HOW THE F*** AM I SUPPOSED TO DO THIS ACHIEVEMENT!!! Then I saw the glitch and I was like YAY! 2 achievements in one(Millionare and Explorer). When I bought this a month ago at Target for 20 bucks that came with all the DLC's.(I don't have Xbox Live so I was happy for my fist time playing DLC's). I have 10 achievements left. After this I just can't wait to just do free roam in "The Betrayal of Jimmy", "Jimmy's Vendetta", or "Joe's Adventures".
  • this achievement was the biggest waste of time for a stupid 10 GS what a crock o shit
  • i beat jimmys vendetta and im only at 86 miles. looks like ill be falling in that glitch for a hell of a long time
  • remember to disable Auto-Off on the dashboard, i just wasted 6hrs of my consoles life doh
  • EVERYBODY READ THIS BEFORE YOU WASTE HOURS OF YOUR LIFE Use the same glitch that you use for the Millionaire Achievement (Found here http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=276690). When you're doing this glitch it actually counts towards your mileage. Your miles will slowly go up, set up the glitch, leave it running, take your lady friend out on a date, when you come back in the morning the achievement should be unlocked. It's a hell of a lot better than driving around for 8 hours trying to get it the other way.
  • wireless controller? auto-off? ... bla bla ... just take a hairband and tie the right stick to the bottom right corner ;) (dont forget to use the charging cable) ... good night peoples ;D
  • The stupid things people do for a 10G which literally means nothing. Don't waste your time, guys.
  • @47 wish I could like your comment. people like coming to this website for achievements. It's what it's here for. I'll never understand why people come on here, then have a go at people that want to get achievements. I like getting them, because that way I feel like I've got the most out of my game. You don't like getting them? Then don't. And yeah, they're worth 'nothing' in real life. But tell me something - when you bought your FAVOURITE game from your favourite game retailer, skipped home singing the theme music, popped it in your disc tray and jumped on your bed while you waited for it to load and then spend X hours completing it, then what? You completed the game bro, well done. Someone gonna pay you for it? What's that completion worth? Fuck all mate. So fuck off with your
  • @56 Amen brother. Ridicules achievement but will get it one way or another. I do however feel that the developers could have gone a bit easier on the millage need for the achievement.
  • people people if u havin promblems doo dis and u shud gt itt Ingame if you go to options you can change it from the metrtic system to the imperial system. When i changed it i saw i? had only drove about 630 miles. So yeah, try changing it to the imperial system and drive another 400 miles and you might get the achievement.!!!Booooooooooooom !!!!!!!!!!!n reamber just save it at 850 Just In Case hope it worked 4 u becuse dis one wos pissin me off lol !!!
  • Use a controller with a wire and drive in to the store for the glitch I went to sleep and left my Xbox on When I looked at my miles when I woke up, I had around 1107 miles and I got the achievement :)
  • @58 are you educated? you do understand the metric is kilometers and imperial is miles? beyond that I have no idea what you said.
  • I am big on getting the ach. points. but I am not gonna spend 20 hours not playing my other games to try and get this....they win this hand out.
  • All for 10G surely not! I don't think I'll put the effort in for this one unless it pops through game play.
  • Forget the glitch, Just grind it out. Take an hour or two out each day and you should be able to get quite a few miles done. May take you a week or two but at least you'll get it done.
  • It really sucks that we have to pay for DLC, its not much, but with the game + the dlc, its like hell for a 12 year old boy
  • @26, no one forced you to buy the DLC's, and you can still get the complete game cheevo...just don't buy the DLC's...
  • @58....what type of language are you speaking.....if that's a reflection of the youth of today, the world is in deep shit.
  • I don’t get why so many people complain about getting this, I had it by half way through my second playthrough. I guess you’re just running from mission to mission and not actually enjoying the game.
  • Easily one of the best achievements on Xbox, 5 Star.
  • @21 thanks a lot! With that subtitle save! If anyone is doing the glitch look at 21! Now I got another completed game!
  • worst achievement ever
  • got this achievement today. everyday before playing games what I'm currently digging I was driving 50 miles and also turning on some music while driving, so it could be not too boring. maybe it's a slowest way, but not annoying.
  • Finally got this achievement today. As of 20/8/14 the window glitch still works. Had to leave my xbox idle for 37hours all up. Although it is roughly 30miles an hour it can slow down, I once left it for 4 hours and it had only done 40miles. So just save and reload from last checkpoint. For those who are having trouble ramming through the shop glass, don't go too fast as you will just crash. Go about a slow to medium speed and it should work. Worst achievement ever.
  • this is just fucking cruel. the glitch DOES still work so if ur like me and this is the last achievement u need to get, just leave it running with the tv off and go about ur business. check it before u go to bed it usually only averages like 100 miles every 12 hours or so. but idk, it might have something to do with how much ur car flips or something
  • Didn't do the glitch due to not owning a wired controller (also felt weird about leaving my xbox on that long), and I just did the car theft mission near the bridge then a combination of a few suggestions posted on here, such as driving back and forth across the large bridge, as well as driving along the freeway system. Mission ends, reload it and repeat for about an hour or two a day until I got it. An overall terrible achievement, so tedious.
  • This achievement should be worth at least 100gp
  • Can I just ask WHY???
