What is 1999 mode?

An Arcade mode with score?
Or a new Game Plus like Batman Arkham City? with different enemy placement and stronger AI.

Anyone knows? Sorry I am not keeping up with information on this game :)

"Dubbed 1999 mode, it's essentially a tougher version of the title where players' choices have "permanent consequences" in the game and modern-day features such as frequent respawn points and an abundance of ammo have been stripped out to increase the challenge."

@8 What are you talking about? Dark Souls doesnt have an "Insane Difficulty" It has one base difficulty which is increased slightly on every new game + and its barely even enough to be considered a separate difficulty as it only changes enemies HP and damage output. It doesnt change the gameplay by adding an increase in enemies or more challenging enemies and it doesnt make their attack patterns or abilities change either. Most games do most or all of these things and more when adding different difficulty levels making the game a different experience all together. 1999 mode doesnt sound anything like Dark Souls in any way.

#1 is almost right, the quest is called "For Auld Lang Syne", which is named after the song!

@10 chill out bro, we're just discussing the game and making comparisons. Either way, Dark Souls is SOLID and 1999 mode sounds like that. But i don't understand why people on here get so stressed out and hett-up when someone posts something they don't like, or agree with.

Getting back to the game, I gotta be honest, I'm not one for the crazy difficulty levels. I tend to play for the story or gameplay. But i also like a challenge. Will have to check it out, but if it's stressful, i'll do it on normal and keep my mind on the story (my favourite thing about Bioshock in general). Think i'm gonna miss Rapture though.

I wonder how they are gonna implement "permanent choice consequences" as #7 said. You would think your decisions would be permanent across all difficulty levels. Anything else would seem unrealistic, to me anyways.

Like in Dark Souls for example, once you cross a certain guild/covenant you can never rejoin (unless you absolve your sins) or if you kill an npc they are gone forever. These types of consequences make me seriously think about something before i do it, which I think should be a feature that is not optional if its a feature at all.

Irony abounds. This achievement title is sinister in a cyclical sort way. 1999 mode to a translation of "times gone by" being remembered and again forgotten.

#19, most games do now. I'm sure this will.

The better question is whether 1999 will come unlocked, require a play through on ANY difficulty, or be required to play through hardcore first. Too lazy to look it up in any real detail, so someone else should find out. ^__^;;

So, unfortunately, it seems as if there is no New Game + option. I just finished the story and my choices are continue from the last checkpoint in the game, start a new game (which overwrites the most recent autosave) or load a chapter.

If you need help, look to the IGN walkthrough for the pattern of attacks your enemies use.
As for the last fight, fully upgrade the: Sniper Rifle(for the patriots and barge cannons), Shotgun(for All enemies), Undertow(use on all ground enemies), Shield and Health Infusion. Gear to use: Winter Shield, Rising Bloodlust, Sky-Line Reloader, Newton's Law. Plan of attack: Continuously jump on and off the sky-lins, striking and landing next to enemies to keep them stunned. Whenever possible use Undertow to push enemies off the ledge; when used on Patriots it will stun them(like Shock Jockey). Watch your health and salt level and keep moving around. When the Barge Cannons show up, destroy them with the sniper rifle, then resume your attack on the infantry. Using this method I beat the fight wi

1999 mode was not as hard as I expected. Although certain points did prove to be a little more of a challenge than others. Mainly the ghost of Lady Comstock(Highly suggest just sticking back behind some cover and go for head shots with the sniper) , as well as the final fight. For the most part if you take your time it shouldn't be to bad.

For final battle I did 1st time with a simple strategy I saw. Songbird the patriots, possess rocket guys as they take out a lot of enemies (and the rocket zeplin), and then themselves also while running around use return to sender's shield to cover yourself.

Oh and spam the winter shield gear if you have it, makes you invincible when jumping on or off sky rails :).

Sunday, April 07, 2013 @ 08:01:59 PM

Yes, just got it! The two parts that gave me the most trouble were the 2nd encounter with Lady Comstock and the very end of the game on the airship. I found the best way to deal with Comstock was to keep your distance and go for headshots with the sniper rifle, which I would recommend upgrading as soon as you can. As for the airship,Alex1906's strategy worked really well for me. Only instead of using the songbird on the patriots, I used return to sender to protect myself while constantly shooting them in the head with either the crank gun or sniper rifle.

For anyone having trouble with Lady Comstock, consider spamming Bucking Bronco
on the soldiers to keep them off your tail; then with an upgraded Hand Cannon
just unload into her. Sniper also works.

For the final battle I equipped.

(Shirt) Winter Shield
(Boots) Newton's Law
(Pants) Brittle -Skinned

I had 6200 Silver Eagles saved and never died once. Spammed the skyline mostly used skyline kills and possession. Worked quite well.

Once you are far enough along in the game, using the following setup in 1999 mode gives you a distinct advantage and makes you almost unstoppable if you play smart. This a great strategy while attempting the Auld Lang Syne and Scavenger Hunt achievements.

VIGORS:
1) CHARGE: This melee attack will be your new core ability and the basis of your offensive strategy, upgrade it twice AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to receive:
a)CHARGE AID: which adds brief invulnerability and recharges shield
b)CHARGE BOOST: Adds explosive damage to your attack

2) POSSESSION: Also purchase both upgrades so that you can possess humans who will suicide and so it will cost less to use.

GEAR:
1) HAT: Burning Halo - lights melee targets and close enemies on fire
2) VEST: Blood to Salt - 40% chance you regain salt upon enemy death
3) BOOTS: Vampire's Embrace - Melee kills give health
4) PANTS: Brittle Skinned - Melee targets take 2x damage for 5 seconds

WEAPONS:
1) RPG - upgrade this all four times and always hold onto it to fight stronger enemies like Handymen and Motorized Patriots
2) CARBINE, SHOTGUN, HAND CANNON - upgrade these at least three times each and swap them out as the situation arises and based on your ammo reserves, (especially if going for the scavenger hunt achievement) this will be your primary weapon to back up CHARGE which will be your primary attack.

INFUSIONS: Upgrade shields and salts first at a 3-1 ratio (one salt for every 3 shields) fol

STRATEGY: Using the CHARGE vigor with the above load-out will allow you to fly across the map striking targets wherever they are located. As you strike, you will do explosive melee damage and likely set the target and any nearby enemies on fire, your shield will recharge, you will regain health and likely regain salts all while being temporarily invincible. If the enemy does not die on the first hit or from the fire, he will now be glowing red and susceptible to double damage from another CHARGE or your firearm. This is great for Handymen and Patriots because if you CHARGE repeatedly and fire your RPG, they will die very quickly.

Most enemies will die in 1-2 hits and some will die instantly from the fire. Using this strategy, I did take some damage, but walked away from most large

encounters will full health, nearly full ammo and more than half of my salts remaining. However, it should go without saying, but do not try to take on too many at once, back up, stay in cover, and picking off enemies with possession to go fight for you can make your job much easier.

SIREN BOSS FIGHT 3X:
All 3 encounters against the siren lasted 15 seconds or less and she is very susceptible to fire. As the fight starts just spam CHARGE immediately to get close and continue to charge and shoot her and she will die very quickly and all the undead will just burn up as they will still be standing right next to her. I seriously felt like I was cheating becuase the fight was over so quickly.

this strategy made the game feel easy on 1999 mode. During the final battle, the enemies will charge and shoot the core instead of you, so come in from behind and CHARGE them and shoot with your RPG, there is plenty of RPG ammo on the deck and salts by the Bridge to recharge.

ADDITIONAL NOTES ON GEAR:
1)Swap out BLOOD FOR SALTS for WINTER SHIELD while around skylines
2)Equip HANDYMAN NEMESIS if having trouble with the Handymen
3)Swap out BURNING HALO for ELECTRIC TOUCH or ELECTRIC PUNCH if having trouble with Patriots

Good luck!
