Rumor: Xbox 360 dropping to $299

Joystiq has been in contact with the person who uploaded images to HighDefDigest.com showing a "new low price" of $299 for the Xbox 360 in the Kmart flyer beginning the week of July 6. He snapped the images quite quickly and they've slowly begun spreading across the internet.

We're currently attempting to confirm this information with some of our other retail contacts and our source is attempting to get a full page scan of the Kmart flyer. There is still no word on how this $50 price reduction on the Premium model will affect the Arcade or Elite Xbox 360 consoles, currently priced $280 and $450 respectively.

If the rumor turns out to be true, I hope the drop carries onto an Elite as well. There have already been over 10 millions 360's sold, but who knows, so who knows, maybe the time has come.

I work for Gamestop as a store manager. We got our marketing for the next month in today and there isn't anything in there about it. Might be Kmart exclusive?

If microsoft drops the price of the Elite I will have to go pick one up and use my other as a modifying xbox. I hope it is true.

Isn't it kind of late for a price drop? Didn't the Xbox 1 get marked down withing 1 - 2 years of its release?

This isnt the first price drop for the 360. The original XBOX wasnt selling so well prompting the 100 cut, if I recall correctly.

In the past couple months I've seen $50 giftcard deals with GTA 4 (buy a console and the game, get a $50 gift card) from Circuit City, Best Buy, Target, Gamestop, and a much crappier version at KMart, and a week or two ago I saw another $50 gift card offer from Gamestop if you bought a console and Nascar 09. With all these recent offers a universal price drop wouldn't surprise me.

I still bought mine for £150 second hand. Good price aswell because i'm sure the guy wanted to use the money for drugs lol.

Pricewise the drop should come when theres another big exclusive game coming, like they did for GTA

Mine's an Elite, and it sounds like that too. I think all the ones with the new Falcon chips, which should be all of them by now, are quieter. Both my mom and sister have Premiums with Falcon chips, and they don't sound like a vacuum in labor like my Elite does .

Yeah when I had my 360 replaced, they just replaced it with a refurbished version. And while I'm "babysitting" my co-workers 360 whole he's overseas, my self boosting sessions sound like dueling blow dryers.

None of my consoles are modded and all my 360 games are legit retail.

I was thinking about doing that to one of my 360's that is no longer under warranty, but I'm picky. I want a custom REAL Carbon Fiber case. I already own a real CF Faceplate, but I want the whole case to be made of CF. That would be sweeeet!
