Introduction

Kingdoms & Lords is a freemium city-building game set in Medieval times. You grow your kingdom from scratch, collecting resources, constructing buildings, and increasing your population. The game also includes a unique battle component where you fight hordes of enemies on a turn-based battlefield. This guide is based on the premise that you do not spend any money at all on the game. If you break down and pay the outrageous prices for diamonds, your path may be a little quicker and easier. Currently the game is FREE in the Windows Phone Store.

Step 0: Find others playing the game

This game has hordes of social features that involve interacting with your friends. You can send gifts to each other, which is essential for gathering magic scrolls to use in battle, as well as exchanging the items needed to upgrade your soldiers. There is also resources, gold, and XP to be gained by visiting and helping friends. There are even three achievements directly related to friends. Your first step should be locating and getting as many other active players of the game on your friends list as you can manage. See the Achievement Trading Thread.

Step 1: Decide whether to use the time glitch or not

Before starting the game, you should decide whether you want to complete the game in about 20 hours total of your time or spread that same time out over 1+ months or more. Pros of the time glitch include not having to worry about playing this game for an extended period of time and getting the game over with. Cons consist of the potential for some of the achievements to glitch and not unlock properly if you unlock one with a non-current date. Also, this can be considered cheap and illegitimate among the achievement hunting community. Make your choice now! If you decide for the former, please see the "Time Glitch Detailed" section below for more information.

Step 2: Work through the game to defeat all bosses and reach Level 40

The main focus of game is defeat all of the bosses. Along this path you be growing your kingdom, amassing an army, gathering resources, and farming for gold. Most of the game's achievements will unlock along this trek. Completing the tutorial mission will earn you the "Advancement" achievement. Winning and losing your first battles will unlock "Draw First Blood" and "Be First Blood," respectively. "One Step, One Footprint", "Roast Chicken Hobbyist" and "Defense Fortress" will come early on just by completing quests and growing your small kingdom. There is an achievement for defeating each of the eight bosses. You will need to reach Level 40 to unlock the last Kingdom building for the "Money, Money" achievement. "I See You" will require that you amass the several million gold coins to purchase all of the land expansions to conclude your playthrough.

While doing all this, you will need to participate in the online battle component of the game against your friends and random players. The three online achievements require you to win a total of 200 battles. This will be a big grind if you dont chip away at it slowly, especially since you can only fight each friend once per day (without using time glitch). Finally, the "Have Friends All Over the World" achievement requires you to have 10 total friends that have played the game.

Step 3: Mop-up

After reaching Level 40 and amassing the gold to purchase all land expansions, you should have all other achievements already completed as long as you pay attention to them from the start. Take this time to polish the last few achievements off if there are any.

Conclusion

Kingdoms & Lords is not unlike Ice Age Village, another freemium city-builder on Windows Phone. It will require a vast amount of time to complete if you do it without exploiting your device's time settings. It is not at all difficult, but will request a decent amount of dedication and patience. The best part is that the game is FREE and does not require real money to complete in any way.

TIME GLITCH DETAILED: The game allows you to exploit the time settings on your device to make the game easier and quicker to progress. Essentially you need to queue up some tasks in the game and then exit (close the game, dont just let it run in the background). Then go to Settings>Date+Time and then turn off the automatic clock setting. Now you can set the date and time yourself. For the purposes of this glitch, it is best to advance the clock however much time you need. If you want to collect the gold from growing you crops, be sure to only advance the clock the amount of time they need to complete growing. Otherwise, you can go to far and they will be withered and you will only get the planting cost out of them. If you are grinding products, like lumber or cloth, you can advance a day at a time with no issues. Do all you need to do and then repeat the process. This will allow you to gather gold and XP to level up and not have to wait through the real-world time!

The most important thing during this process is to not unlock any achievements when you are altering the time. If you do, it is almost a certainty they will not stick to your profile and a complete reinstall may be required to obtain them. Make note of all of the achievements and be certain not the unlock them. Another important aspect of the time glitch is to make sure that you do not ever collect gold from the housing or kingdom buildings while advancing time. This will create time sync issues in such a way that would will never be able to get any more gold out of that building when playing in normal time. The only way to fix it is to sell the building and rebuild it. The same goes for producing lumber, cloth, and metal. Make sure to collect the products and not start producing anymore before reverting to normal time. See the "General Tips" section below for the best ways to utilize the time glitch.

All online features will be disabled when you turn the clock ahead (backwards is OK). This includes leaderboards, battling friends and randoms, purchasing premium currency, as well as sending and receiving gifts.

COMPLETE WINDOWS 8 AND WINDOWS PHONE VERSIONS IN ONE PLAYTHROUGH: Because this game features cloud saving and is cross-platform, it is possible to complete both stackable versions in a single playthrough if you carefully plan your saves. See THIS post for more information (thanks to Young Dreezy IV for writing it up).

GENERAL TIPS:

  • Diamonds are the premium currency in the game. You can get them for free by leveling up, at a rate of 1 diamond per level. You also will receive them as rewards for rounds of the boss battles towards the middle and end of the game. They are not required directly for achievements, but you will want to save ALL of them to use in the 15 rounds of the final boss where you will be facing some uphill battles. Additionally, they are also required for learning the final skill in the higher level soldier's skill trees.
  • Make sure to harvest your crops when they are ready. If you wait too long, they will die and you will make no profit from them at all and will have wasted your time.
  • Using the time glitch, the best method to grind XP is to use the most expensive (24-hour) production buildings to create logs, stones, and fabric. Each resource collected takes 24 hours and will earn you 7 XP. This will drain your gold over time. You can combine this method with a few windmills (or other housing buildings) to earn enough gold to finance the resource production simultaneously. You just need to create a good balance to fully exhaust all of your energy each time you advance the clock.
  • Using the time glitch, the best method to grind gold is to use housing buildings. When you get high enough level, build enough windmills to fully exhaust your energy count each time advancement.
  • For multiple sessions of using the time glitch, write down the date you left on so next time you can pick up there again. This is vital for grinding gold, as if you go back in time the housing buildings will no longer put out.
  • Try not to waste time/resources/money upgrading your soldiers until you reach the highest ranking units in each class (which unlock between Levels 28 and 35). It is just not worth it because those upgraded units will be so weak compared to the higher level, un-upgraded units. The high power soldier's final skills require diamonds to learn.
  • If you just want to use the time glitch to get energy, you can close the game, set the time back one day, load and close the game, set the time back to automatic, then load the game. This will refill your energy and you can unlock achievements at will, without fear of them glitching.
  • Begin gathering upgrade resources from your friends using the Training Arena so when you unlock them you already have the items to unlock their skill trees. These are the the highest level units in each class that will be vital to your success later in the game are: Cavalry - Light Bringer, Death Dealer, and True Knight. Infantry - Paladin, Warrior, and Heavy Halberdier. Ranged - Marksman, Ballista, and Destroyer.
  • Constantly be exchanging spells as gifts with your friends. These will be key in the later stages of the boss battles when you will be facing tough enemies. Flame Strike I is a particularly useful spell. Just keep gifting them to your friends and sending them back and forth. Send gift by tapping on a friend in the Social screen.

Wipe out shadowy areas.

This achievement requires that you purchase all parcels of land to expand your kingdom to the maximum size. You start with one plot of land, but must purchase the 79 other plots. The price of land increases by 5,000 gold each time, until reaches its maximum price of 100,000, for which it remains constant. Purchasing all plots demands around 7 million gold. This will require some serious gold accumulation. See the "General Tips" section in the Roadmap for the best method to grind gold. You should wait until you unlock the windmill as it will be your cash cow. This will likely be your last achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2876/15.jpg World Conqueror - 15 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Defeat all bosses.

These achievements are awarded for defeating each boss in the game, one achievement for each boss. The final achievement, the "World Conqueror," will unlock after you defeat the game's final boss, the Dark King. Bosses are the driving force behind the game and act as the only hint of storyline you will get. Defeating them should motivate all your actions in the rest of the game. Essentially you just want to level up so you can get a more powerful army to take down the bosses.

Boss fights are fairly lame in this game. You never actually fight a boss, but just a series of normal soldiers which I guess could be considered minions. Each boss battle has three areas with three rounds each (except General McCallister which has 4 areas and the Dark King which has 5 areas). This totals nine battles to defeat most bosses. The enemies will get more challenging as you progress. At some points, you may not be able to defeat the enemies you are facing using normal tactics. Take this time to grind a few levels to get better units. If you cannot start the battle and it says you must unlock a specific quest, this generally means you need to talk to Shaara or Lisa (the fictional neighbors in the game). Do this by visiting their respective kingdoms or, in some cases, by just clicking on the quest in your task list.

FINAL BOSS: The final boss consists of 5 rounds of 3 battles against some relatively challenging opponents. These enemies will occasionally be those that you can not even recruit yourself. They can only be purchased with diamonds. The enemies will also almost always be fully-upgraded as well. You will probably need to upgrade the highest ranking units you can purchase. It is a good idea to generously use whatever spells you may have accumulated throughout your playthrough. Use the diamonds you have accumulated wisely to purchases additional spells if you need them. If you saved all diamonds that you could, you should have around 80 to work with. Some battles are quite one-sided and it might be hard to compete without using spells throughout the battle.

See the "General Tips" section in the Roadmap for more tips on succeeding in the game in general.

*GLITCHY WARNING* Each and every boss achievement in the game can be considered glitchy because sometimes the achievements will just not unlock after completing the requirements. To prevent having to worry about this, right before fighting the last battle against any boss (i.e. before the 9th battle), pause the game and click "Save" to save your game to the cloud. After defeating the boss, if the achievement doesnt unlock AND stick to your xbox.com profile, immediately exit the game and then load it back up. The game will prompt you to choose your local save or cloud save. Choose the cloud save and then battle the boss again in hopes that it will not glitch once more. If it does, repeat the process. This fix requires an active internet connection.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2876/16.jpg Money, Money - 15 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Own all of the Kingdom buildings.

This achievement requires that you purchase and construct all Kingdom buildings from the Shop. There are 12 Kingdom buildings in total and the last one, the Royal Fortress, does not unlock until you reach Level 40, which requires 28,700 XP. See the "General Tips" section in the Roadmap for tips on how to level quickly. This will likely be your last achievement. All other achievements should be mostly complete by the time you reach Level 40, save maybe the "I See You" achievement which will require a ton of gold coins.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2876/17.jpg Demon - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Successfully invade friends' kingdoms 100 times.

This achievement requires that you successfully invade friends' kingdoms 100 times. This is the easiest of the online battling achievements. However, you do need to have Xbox Live friends that have the game to be able to invade them. Head to the Social screen (under Tools) to see all your friends with the game. Here you can select each friend and choose to invade them. Once in their kingdom, click on any building to invade it. Win the battle to get credit towards this achievement. You can only battle each friend once every 24 hours. So ideally, the more friends you have, the quicker this will go. Your friends do not need to actively be playing the game. They just need to have started a world and created a cloud save at some point. You can check your progress towards this achievement under Tools>Achievements (there is a counter).

See "Demon's Nightmare" for a good method to boost that achievement and this achievement simultaneously.

TIME GLITCH METHOD: You can exploit your device's time settings to earn this achievement quicker. As mentioned, you usually have to wait 24 hours before attacking the same friend again. However, you can exit the game, set your date BACK one day, load and exit the game again, then set your date back to automatic, and finally load back the game. This will allow you to attack your friends again. Basically you can just attack all your friends and then use the time exploit to be able to attack them again immediately.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2876/18.jpg Demon's Nightmare - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Successfully resist invasion 100 times (includes helping friends).

This achievement requires that you drive an occupying enemy out of your kingdom. When another player successfully attacks a building in your kingdom, a symbol will appear that you can click on to battle that player to drive them from your kingdom. You need to do this 100 times. You can also help a friend resist an invasion by clicking on the same symbol when you are visiting their kingdom. Win the battle for them and it will also count towards this achievement. You can check your progress towards this achievement under Tools>Achievements (there is a counter).

There is a good method to boost this achievement, as well as the "Demon" achievements simultaneously. Basically you want to recruit as many friends to boost with as you can. Each player should keep five, low-level infantry units as their only line of defense (either spear men, axe men, or sword men). That way, when your friends attack you, they can deploy five low-level enemies that has a damage bonus against your defending soldiers. They should have no trouble successfully invading your kingdom. Now, when you click on the symbol to resist the invasion, you will only be fighting their low-level enemies. You can pick whatever powerful units to rid them from your kingdom. This assures that everyone will be able to get easy invasions and defends against the boosting partners to work towards both of those achievements at the same time. This method is especially effective because it eliminates the issues caused by players having different levels. Each player can only attack you once per 24 hour period (without the time glitch), so to get this done in a timely fashion you will want as many friends contributing as possible. See the Achievement Trading Thread for others looking to boost.

TIME GLITCH METHOD: Basically you want to visit a friend that has been attacked by another of your friends (must be friends with both). When you visit their kingdom, the symbol will be there to repel the attack. Then click the icon and win the battle as normal. This will count towards the achievement. Then exit the game. Go into device settings and change your date BACK one day. Load game and visit that kingdom again. You should be able to repel the same attack again. It will count towards the achievement as well. Then exit the game and return time settings to automatic. Load and that same repel should be available again. Repeat over and over. It is kind of tedious, but is better than waiting around for friends to attack you. If you can find multiple friends kingdoms with repels in them, then you can do more than one before you have to change the time settings and reload the game, which saves significant time.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2876/19.jpg Friends All Over the World - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Have more than 10 friends.

This achievement requires that you have 10 friends or more visible in the Social screen (Tools>Social). There are actually two ways to unlock this achievement:

  1. Have 10 friends or more on your Xbox Live list that have played Kingdoms & Lords at some point. All friends that have at least created a kingdom and saved it to the cloud will show up.
  2. If you have no friends at all that have played the game, ALL of your friends will show up in Social screen, which will get registered for 10 or more if you have that many total friends on Xbox Live.

So there are two approaches to earn this achievement. You can either find and friend request ten others that have played the game, which is the recommended route, or (temporarily?) remove all your friends that have played the game so ALL of your friends will appear and unlock the achievement that way. However, it is best to have as many friends as possible that play the game so the first method is recommended. Thanks to Avenged Remains for providing clarification on this. This achievement will not pop until after the tutorial.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2876/20.jpg Good Luck Follows You - 10 http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Win 50 one-on-one battles.

This achievement requires that you win a total of 50 battles with only a single soldier remaining. This can be boss battles, random battles, and battles against friends. It does not matter how many soldiers you or the opponent starts with, but you must WIN the battle with ONLY ONE soldier remaining. These types of outcomes are generally rare, but you can easily boost this in the first boss battle against the Barbarian General at any point. From the World Map (Tasks>Click on the globe), click on the Southland Basin and tap the picture of the General. Select Battle #1 and begin (requires two energy). Place only a single, strong soldier to battle the two axe men. Any mid-to-high level cavalry or spearman unit will do. Win the battle and repeat until you reach 50. It only uses two energy each time so this will not take too long. You can check your progress towards this achievement under Tools>Achievements (there is a counter).

This text needs to be removed from the OP:

With that said, be especially careful of the level 10,20,30,40 and 50 achievements. You can reach the level, but when the screen the pops up saying "Level 30" or whatever it may be, immediately head into your time settings from that screen and change the clock to the current date and return it to automatic. Then load back into the game and proceed to the next screen. This will unlock the achievement as normal.

Another important aspect of the time glitch is to make sure you have the Kung Fu Scrat mini-game deployed in your village and to collect the free silver coin each day you step forward. As mentioned below, these silver coins are key to completing the game, as you can use them to play the Kung Fu game to earn free acorns (by luck of the spin after the game).

Doe anyone know of a good way to deal with all these soldiers? They're just standing around taking up room. Can I put them in the chest? How does the chest work?

As far as I can tell, the chest just stores things your friends gift you for upgrades and also things you win in the lottery. Otherwise, I dont see a way to put things in it. The only way I can see to manage soldiers is to only make a small amount. By small amount I probabaly mean less that 50. You should not ever need more than that and finding a spot for 50 shouldnt be too hard. Their creation times are relatively short so you can always create soliders on the fly (take 5-20 minutes, not like 2+ days or something).

Also, if you must, use the time exploit for like 10 minutes and get enough coin to purchase an expansion. One expansion can hold 250+ soliders or more.

does anyone know yet if any of the kingdom buildings cost gems? or can I just spend my gems recklessly? lol

also..the achievement for 50 1v1 victories...my achievement "counter only shows 3, even though I should have a lot more....I lost a match around 4 ago though...so could it be that its 50 wins in a row?

The kingdoms buildings don't seem to cost gems.

I highly recommend saving gems for upgrading the highest quality units of each type. In other words, the best archer, best catapult, etc. I wasted some on upgrading lower level units, which eventually become outclassed by even non-upgraded higher level units.

Is a gold account needed for the online side of it?

No, WP and Windows 8 games don't require a Gold account for multiplayer features.

Is it just me that is finding the achievements to be very glitchy? I'm considering reinstalling after reaching level 9, as I've beaten the 3rd barbarian fight and have yet to unlock the achievement.

But then, I'm not sure if I've even beaten him, because I didn't see anyone special in the fight, and I haven't unlocked it yet either according to the in game map... So I'm not sure anymore :S

I'm wondering if there's perhaps a 4th fight where you actually defeat him for the achievement? This is what my map looks like:

Is it just me that is finding the achievements to be very glitchy? I'm considering reinstalling after reaching level 9, as I've beaten the 3rd barbarian fight and have yet to unlock the achievement.

But then, I'm not sure if I've even beaten him, because I didn't see anyone special in the fight, and I haven't unlocked it yet either according to the in game map... So I'm not sure anymore :S

I'm wondering if there's perhaps a 4th fight where you actually defeat him for the achievement? This is what my map looks like:

Hi. You never actually fight the bosses. You just battle normal soldiers. It takes a total of 9 battles to beat each boss. 3 groups of 3. From the map you posted, you are still on the Barbarian Fights. No worries it did not glitch on you. You cannot proceed into each group of battles until you reach a certain level (notice it tells you that you need to unlock the "Barbarian such and such quest" to proceed).

Does anyone know how the 10 friends achievement works?

I know it doesnt have to be 10 friends that have played the game (as I got it during the prelaunch when no one on my friends list had even played it). It popped as soon as I started the game.

I am wondering if the requirements are just to have 10 total gameloft friends, or 10 Xbox live friends? Can anyone post on their experience with that.

**Also, Anyone who beat the last boss can comment what level you need to be to unlock the final battle series?

**Any information on the versus battle achievements would be good. The "invade 100 friends" seems to be working for me. But the other two counters for "resist invasion" and "win 1v1 battles" are gltiched for me at 0/100 and 2/50 respectively. Is there are trick to getting these counters up?

Resist invasion only refers to friends invading your lands. After 2 friends successfully invaded my lands, I saw them occupying buildings and was able to select those buildings to fight them off. My counter than went up to 2.

Later, I had a notification under messages that a friend had *tried* to invade my lands but failed. That pushed my counter up to 3. But I've only gotten that notification that one time.

Either the game's tracking of friend invasions is really glitchy, or my units are too high level and keep fighting them off. I think allowing friends to capture buildings and then hitting back might be the best way to go.

Both Barbarian General and Lady of the Coast have glitched for me! Both show as unlocked in game but not on xbox.com - anyone know if a patch is incoming?
